Alistair Overeem: There is nobody else out there with speed and technical ability to beat Fedor but me

Overeem-knee_medium

Props: Sherdog.com

Quoteworthy:

"I surround myself with people who have the same attitude, intelligent people which you can learn from and develop yourself. In the gym my sparring partners don't really like me. There's nobody else out there with the speed, technical ability and the sharpness [to beat Fedor]. I know how to turn myself into a very dangerous weapon."

Defending Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem comes off a quick technical knockout over Brett Rogers at "Heavy Artillery" last Saturday night (May 15) and now sets his sights on the elusive but still top ranked heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko. "The Reem" returned to the states after a two year performance to impressive results -- but was it enough to convince the fans that he's the right guy to topple "The Last Emperor?"

Could happen

Someone will beat Fedor in the future, thats a given. Overeem can definetly do it if he connects. I still take fedor in this one.

But more because I’d rather see him an fedor as opposed to fedor vs anyone else right now…we all brock would immediately go for the takedown, because that’s what he is good at. I’d rather watch someone who can do it all

I don’t think fedor will take any damage more severe than the patented Werdum Slap, like the one he hit Arlovski with. AA never recovered from that slap. That’s why he keeps getting knocked out.

I was not a big Overeem fan until this fight....

I dont know… I had never listened to any of his interviews or anything. I had only seen Pride fights and obviously heard the steroids rumors…..I thought he was good but I wouldnt have called myself a fan of his.

but after listening to a bunch of his interviews I def like the guy. He seems to be pretty smart and relaxed. And I tend to like that in fighters.

There is no doubt that he has juiced in the past though…. but yet I still like the dude…..

Im conflicted. lol

I’m not talking about his first 10 MMA opponents, I’m talking about his last 10. His record’s still inconsistent at best; look at it, can = win; second he runs into a decent fighter you can just put the loss up there. It’s academic the diff between the two is Fedor beat all the cans AND all the good fighters that were put in front of him.

he hadn't gained the striking advantage yet

…because Fedor doesn’t outstrike guys, he out waits their confidence. He only requires one shot. So when getting out jabbed all he does is back peddle for a moment or two to wait til you drop a hand or move it to throw a jab while he gets his timing right to unleash a hell bomb.

Look at his KO of Rogers, he threw that shot (One of hardest I have EVER seen) from about a foot in front of his waist! He didn’t even wind up! Incredible.

oh i dont doubt

…Overeem has the striking to do so. If he locks a clinch on Fedor it could be one knee too many. But I don’t count Fedor out like you guys seem to. “No way he can”, well yes actually he can. Its not as if he will stand there and simply absorb Overeems with no retaliation. He is able to do so against a guy like AA because he wasn’t being rocked. Now if he’s getting rocked he may be forced to attempt more punches or a clinch of his own. He’s not where he is from having no gameplans.

now im starting to question how many of his bouts you've seen

In the time it took him to armbar Choi you can clearly see him attempt two takedown sweeps that fail due to Choi’s size but he clearly knew he was gameplanning to do that, then he attempts and arm bar from his back, fails, makes it back up, Choi gets the mount again, and Fedor uses his same gameplan to sink the armbar.

^^Gameplan^^

He used a game plan 8 years ago to beat the worlds biggest can. Good for you worby.

What was his game plan against AA and Rogers? Get punched in the face a bunch of times then land one punch? Good planning. Taking Rogers and AA down to negate their one strength would be game planning. GSP wouldn’t stand with Hardy because that is what game planning is.

I was impressed when he out struck CC; impressed when he GnP’d Nog from inside his guard and wasn’t even close to getting subbed twice; pretty impressed with the comeback sub on Randleman after being dropped on his head.

I was pretty impressed with Shogun when he tko’d Overeem twice. Pretty impressed when Chuck knocked his ass out cold. Pretty impresed when lil Nog TKO’d his ass. Definatley impressed when Sergei KO’d him.

Like I said, they’ve BOTH fought cans the difference being Fedor beat the cans + the good fighters they put in front of him.

Exactly. This was 5 years ago when the REEM was a kid.

He’d kill CC, Nog, Fedor, Randleman all of the HW’s from PRIDE.

You do realize 5 years ago he was 25 and Fedor was 28???

And that he was already 16-4 when Chuck knocked him out clean? Oh well.. I look forward to watching him fail some more.

Now he's 30 and Fedor's 33

Overeem’s 30 years old, 33-11, between K-1 and MMA he’s been KO’d/TKO’d a crap load. Fedor’s 33 maybe approaching the downside of his carreer; 31-1 (and we all know the 1 loss is garbage tko on a cut). Never been KO’d and never been subbed. Now all the sudden Overeem’s gonna steam roll him? Riiiiiiggghhhtt…. sometimes you guys are too funny .

Nobody is revising history. I know Fedor is number one and he deserves that spot.

But he can and will lose. He hasn’t looked good in most of his wins and if he ends up getting hit by someone like Overeem there will be no late comeback.

Got to call you on the first 15 fighters thing...

Fedor beat -

Ricardo Arona
Renato Sobral
Semmy Schilt
Heath Herring
Antonio Nogueira

amongst his first 15 – despite what you might think, none of these are “cans”.

Who’s the No.1 Heavyweight to you Jay? Brock? (Who couldn’t even finish Herring with a broken orbital – who was stopped by Fedor a long time back…).

I’ll admit Fedor hasn’t looked amazing recently but he rarely has looked that great when you look back over his fights, he’s patient and tactical, skilled and powerful – that’s what wins him fights, not blasting people from the bell. He’s only ever even been rocked once and he destroyed said guy within about 30 seconds of that…

by Jimrod on May 18, 2010 10:51 AM EDT up reply actions

You'll have to show me where I said Fedor isn't number one.

Here’s a hint, you won’t find it.

by jay. on May 18, 2010 10:52 AM EDT up reply actions

He is beatable, in theory...

But no-one’s done it yet. I just hope he gets to fight a few more top names before he’s past it. The thing is if he loses one fight all will say he’s finished and it was all hype – whereas every PFP champion out there has losses.

Fedors skills<Overeem skills.

What does Fedor do better? Sambo never comes into play. Overeem is bigger, stronger and better standing(by a mile) do you think Fedor could take him down and sub him?

by jay. on May 18, 2010 10:26 AM EDT up reply actions

"What does Fedor do better?"

EVERYTHING except striking. And yes I think that’s exactly what will happen; clinch, throw/inside trip, GnP to armbar, OR Overeem gets top position tries to tee off and gets subbed by armbar. And I’ve seen Fedor throw up the armbar easily from top or bottom position. It doesn’t matter, the second it hits the ground, it’s a wrap.

fedor has been at a techincal striking disadvantage plenty of times in the past

(CC, AA) and proven that it doesnt matter, by outstriking and KO ing these guys. and sambo always comes inro play, its part of his flow, his hip tosses and submissions all come from sambo. and yes fedor can take him down and sub him very realistic jay

Good point.

And many would consider CC a better striker at that time than Overeem today. It’s a close fight if it ever happens I’ll take Fedor but won’t be surprised if Overeem takes it.

plus K1 rules are very different

I watched that one live. He definitely flash ko’d him but if it were MMA and not for the fact of the 3 knockdown rule/one knee down equals a knockdown, he very well may have recovered in time while in a barrage of punches/kicks. But not taking anything away from Badr Hari, he is incredible and super entertaining.

Fedor v Overeem if it happens...

I think will happen around December, I think Strikeforce may try and stick this fight to the UFC by going up against GSP v KOS…..I know which one I’d rather watch…!!

by Clive Barnes on May 18, 2010 10:01 AM EDT reply actions

Sorry man

I’m one of the biggest SF nut huggers around here, and I want nothing more then for them to make it big! But they would never intentionally rival any UFC card. Their ratings are already mediocre at best. I feel they are good ratings for how unknown the league is to most, but the fact is a Fedor fight still doesn’t rival a title defense from the UFC.

by daniel worby on May 18, 2010 10:14 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

On reflection your right...

Though there is even talk of this being SF’s first PPV if it happens………I didn’t mean that SF would go head to head with UFC on the same night though, everybody loses there…!

I just find a Fedor Reem fight way more interesting that Kos GSP….It’s not like GSP KOS 1 was close or anything….I think we can all safely predict the outcome of that one…not so much the other

by Clive Barnes on May 18, 2010 11:09 AM EDT up reply actions

i can agree on that. kos isn't going to beat gsp

…but GSP and Fedor are my fave two fighters so I would hate that on same night (and like we agree that won’t happen), but I need to see both live, even though the outcome of Fedor/Overeem definitely has the larger potential for surprise.

thats the thing though

Fedor “colemans” guys. He almost plays possum, by absorbing punishment and sitting there in this trance, almost as if in his head he’s saying “Wait, wait, wait, THERE!”, then the guys out.

I know it makes no difference now but people are talking about how easy Overeem took Rogers? Look back to the first round of Fedor/Rogers. There’s a 2 punch combo that whistles passed Rogers by about an inch. There is so much force behind it that Rogers must of thought to MLB pitches whizzed by his head. It could’ve ended that much faster, and connection from Fedor is disastrous.

With all due respect Eduardo...

Fedor needs it too….Just look at all the negative comments about how he’s avoiding the big fights…the whole world wants and thinks he needs to step up…beating Overeem would silence a lot of that talk…..but Fedor hasn’t fought anyone of true worth in 3 years…..IMO Fedor avoids this fight too…..Fedor isn’t the monster he was judging by his last few fights and I think he and M! know it…right now they are cashing in on his record, his past and his mystique……….I’m a huge Fedor fan and would love nothing more than see him KO 5 or 6 top heavy weights over the next 2 years but it ain’t gonna happen because they’ll avoid the likes of Overeem because at this stage if Fedor looses to Overeem the whole world of doubters will be proven right….
BTW Lesner is done for Carwin will win this fight :)

Totally.

I still like how Arlovski and Sylvia are “overrated cans” as they were both recent UFC champions when Fedor fought them – can say what you like about them being in decline but they were still legit and Fedor destroyed Timmay like no-one had done before.

Jay’s MMA Maths is flawed too – saying Overeem is better because he beat Rogers faster is idiotic – Rogers beat Arlovski faster than Fedor did too and look how that worked out…

arlovski isn’t a can, but his chin makes him beatable to anyone, and sylvia was’nt a can but he sucks now, wen fedor fought him..

Hey guys!

I also want this bout but Fedor is Fedor and is the favorite for this fight despite Overeem victories in a row. I don’t agree Fedor is afraid of the Dutch. Is he tall, heavier and stronger, OK, but I remind you all that the Last Emperor beat Cro Cop on his prime and Mirko was by far better than Overeem comparing both top moments in their respective career. This is the fight that makes sense, I agree, but Fedor still is the man to be beat and Alistiar recognizes it.

Many of us might of had Rogers overrated, time will tell but Rogers against Big Foot sounds like a possible future fight? Regardless Overeem looks to be the best contender for Fedor outside the UFC anyway.
