Rampage Jackson: Rashad Evans was a TUF 10 coach because Lyoto Machida couldn't speak English

Dm_091026_mma_ultimatefighter_promo_medium

Props: Fighter's Only

Quoteworthy:

"I would have preferred to have done The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) against Machida to fix the problem back in the day, from square one, just 'X' Rashad out because he don't got the damn belt, but Machida's English is not so good so I get stuck having to fight Rashad and he's all cocky thinking he did something good because he's on The Ultimate Fighter but like dude, you just got knocked the hell out! You're on The Ultimate Fighter by default because the dude that knocked you out don't speak English bro. Don't be coming here acting like that. This is the type of thing I'm dealing with. It's just annoying actually."

Former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Quinton Jackson has his sights set on a "Shogun" Rua rematch from their PRIDE days with the assumption that he flattens former opposing TUF 10 coach Rashad Evans in the main event of UFC 114 on May 29 in Las Vegas. "Rampage" skipped town on a UFC 107 fight against "Sugar" to film his role as B.A. Baracus in the upcoming A-Team movie. Was Jackson cheated out of his chance to face Machida because of the language barrier? Or was facing Evans the right move for him at that point in his career?

LOL

? WTF Now that I DON’T remember. I was referring to the fact that Shad steps in the ring and gets in his face after the Jardine fight; which is why that season of TUF even happened in the first place; then he makes this comment about why he had to coach opposite Rashad… Didn’t have anything to do with Machida speaking english; it was the hype train at work; putting heat on an Evans vs Page fight.

As far as Page ducking Machida?

That and Machida is about this scarey...

Page has never been known to duck anyone; he could’ve ducked Wand, Shogun, refused a fight with Sakuraba on short notice; I have a hard time believing coming off two wins, at the top of his game, most experienced point in his carreer that he’d start ducking anyone now.

I'm not gonna rehash this debate

Cause I’ve gone through it before; just cause he took the TUF deal in lieu of fighting Machida doesn’t mean he’s ducking the guy. He’s fought more experienced, longer reigning Champions; he’s not protecting an undefeated record, he didn’t have the title at the time obviously; ducking makes absolutley no sense whatsoever. If Machida is the #1 guy in the division then what would he have to lose?? Seriously, you guys are grasping at straws. Going from business and $$ decisions straight to him being emotionally scared of Machida; and that’s ridiculous.

The fact is

Rampage turned down a title shot against Machida. Everyone can interpret it how they want. My interpretation is that he didn’t want anything to do with him. Machida was still a mystery back then, and nobody had touched him.

Rampage wanted to fight Forrest again

When asked about getting a title shot Rampage said he wanted to fight Forrest again…. never saying he wanted to fight Machida… Rampage also mentioned wanting to fight Rashad… again never saying he wanted to fight Machida… don’t know if that qualifies as ducking Machida

by THORAZINE on May 14, 2010 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions

You're using circular reasoning

Stating that Rampage doesn’t duck fighters is using a premise to support a premise.

The argument about it being more financially rewarding to fight Rashad instead is a more legit argument. But there are holes in that one too.

There are also those who believe the title means more than anything and that turning down a chance to get it is prima facie evidence of ducking a fighter.

by Pantherhare on May 14, 2010 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Which would imply that he is "afraid" of Machida; or afraid of losing his standing

Which doesn’t make sense since Machida was in the #1 spot; the only way for Page to go was up; there was all gain and really no loss. As far as him being personally afraid of Machida I find that very hard to believe.

"Wanderlei Silva; hallowed be thy name." - Genesis 50:27

by O damn he got caught on May 14, 2010 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions

No one wants to lose

Even if it is to the #1 guy. A loss to Machida certainly wouldn’t help Rampage and could diminish his marketability.

I think it was probably a combination of factors. He had a money-making opportunity with Rashad and Machida was a bad match-up for him, so he probably concluded that it was better turning down the fight.

Whether that’s “ducking” depends on your definition of the word in this context. If “ducking” includes some component of fear for his personal safety, then I don’t know, Jackson doesn’t seem to be scared of people, if you take into evidence his confrontations with monsters like a prime Wanderlei.

But if “ducking” means avoiding a fight because you think there’s a good chance that you’ll lose, then I think, yes, Jackson did do a little bit of ducking.

Him not fighting Machida was a business decision

Just like going and making a movie was. You may not agree with the decision, but you also aren’t paying his bills. As much as we would like Fighters to only be about fighting, they make a living off of this sport and they have mouths to feed. They sometimes have to choose to go where the $ is. Its unfortunate, yes, but its a reality and I for one, as much as I don’t like it, have to respect it. Specially when they come back and, hopefully, make up for it by stepping into the cage and leaving it all there.

It's To Bad

Rampage and Rashad didn’t fight right after the Jardine fight as originally planned. That in cage trash talking between the two had the fight as built up as it could be. Feels like ten years later and they are finally going to fight. I don’t feel that same build up and some of the hype is gone. Should still be an entertaining fight, just wish it would have happend back then.

I think he took Forrest lightly to begin with and I believe he didn’t know how to handle his success yet. It was his second title defense against a guy who most believed he could beat.

Just cause you make weight doesn’t mean you will fight to your full potential.

James Irvin would be a bad example

Page is not cutting down to an un-natural weight for him so the Irvin analogy doesn’t quite work.

My point was that he never misses weight which is evidence that he is in some kind of better condition than he was before the cut.

Does it gaurantee a win, of course not but that wasn’t the point being made.

And PW better English than the “Brits”? What are you talking about? Firstly English is our language originally so of course we can speak it better than a Brazilian learning the language. Secondly some of our guys have accents that are difficult to understand e.g. Ross Pearson with his Mackem accent just as it’s hard for people to understand strong American regional accents e.g. Pete Sell and his New York accent. I actually find it insulting when people bitch about not being able to understand our guys when they speak, you should actually make an attempt to understand what they are saying like I do when any foreigner is speaking English instead of bashing the way that everyone from a country speaks. Damnit! Exposed again!

I was just playing Ulf. I don’t know TL, but if I did, I’d remind him of how he ALMOST had A Silva… until he gassed. Just to break balls.

any proof that page is smarter than he lets on?

although, saying hes smarter than he lets on is still setting his bar pretty low. 3 is more than 2, but when it comes to total inches in your dick they both are bad news.

Aw man I thought you were going to ask me something hard

Some might label a person smart when said person demonstrates consistently that he knows how to rise above his situation and seemingly make the right moves through out his career to get to a destination that others just dream of and he did most of that on his own with what he had to give. When he makes mistakes he corrects them. He is certainly no dummy to make it as far as he has and I doubt it was all blind luck as well.

It may be subtle but there is some intelligence in all of that when you look at his life as a whole and not just one moment in his life.

We all do dumb things but that doesn’t necessarily make us dumb just ignorant.

What about Bisping?

There's nothing wrong with Bispings English

He may erm and ah a lot because he doesn’t think of what he’s going to say before doing his blogs but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with the way that he speaks. He doesn’t even have a strong accent so I have no idea how people find him particularly hard to understand.

Proud member of the Brock Pain Train.

Congratulations Jake, Gil and Mo. From the only Maniac to pick all 3 of them.

Fedor invented a language that incorporates Sambo and Kimuras.

So next time FEDOR is kicking your ass, don't be offended or hurt, he may be just trying to tell you he likes your hat.

I want Rampage to win, but i think Rashads cardio and speed will be to much for Rampage

by FatAttack on May 14, 2010 10:46 AM EDT reply actions

I don't want Rampage to win, but I agree w/ the fact that Rashads cardio and speed will be too much

Plus, Rampage is a freaking headcase. Rashad will probably get in his head and have a better gameplan.

by LJ. on May 14, 2010 10:48 AM EDT up reply actions

Rashad will def come with a gameplan

But I have to give Rampage his due, he was very patient and disciplined against Jardine. Sure, it was a close fight, but he didnt get frustrated or impatient like he might have before.

by judomania on May 14, 2010 10:55 AM EDT up reply actions

but

will he be as patient when he’s all pissed off at Rashad. he’ll be fighting with rage which is fine with me but like LJ said he’s a headcase

by FatAttack on May 14, 2010 10:59 AM EDT reply actions

Exactly

He didn’t hate Jardine. He saw that as a fight that he had to win. But he also did really well in composing himself against Wandy, so I think he can be patient. But as you say, will he?

Rampage is a funny dude

When UFC came to Minneapolis we met Rampage. Dude was hilarious. After the weigh-ins they shuttled all the fighters through the bar connected to the Target Center. They all came through, said hello, and signed autographs. Rampage (who wasn’t on the card) came through with Bruce Buffer. He walked right up to the bar and ordered a beer. He also bossed Buffer around like his bitch. Pretty funny stuff.

That’s what Rampage does in the name of "humor.’ He bullies people who can’t do anything about it while his posse of toadies laughes in the hope that they won’t be the next one to be the object of Rampage’s alleged hilarity.

WTF?? ^^^

P-Dub is just pointing out the obvious. Rampage is a jackass, and he’s not even funny. He does bully people, and he is surrounded by a bunch of yes men, that laugh at his stupid ass jokes.
