UFC Quick Quote: Lyoto Machida will be back and stronger than ever
“It was Dana White, owner of the event, who scheduled the fight. We (team) don’t choose opponent and don’t refuse fight. If the owner of the event told us to fight, we prepared at the most to leave there with the victory. Lyoto didn’t refuse to square off with other contenders who were knocking out everybody and this time wasn’t different. He gave his best in the training and also inside the Octagon. Obviously the family and fans were sad but that’s it. The life is made of gladness and sadness. When he gets the belt back, for sure, the gladness is going to be much bigger than the first time he made it."
Former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida (16-1) arrived in Brazil and was welcomed by fans at the airport in Para. Smiling and being a gentleman as usual, Machida handed out autographs and took pictures with fans. Chinzo Machida – brother and cornerman - spoke to Jornal do Para that Machida’s clan was ready to face off any adversary and didn’t jump on the bandwagon of people who consider the instant rematch unfair for the karateca. Fabiola Machida – The Dragon’s wife – revealed that her husband and is upset but calm because that result was fight business. The good news is Lyoto doesn’t need to undergo any surgery on his face and will be back to the camping in two months, stronger than ever.

I was hoping he wasn’t too hurt. Want to see me sum more machida fights- I was worried Shogun Bones’deded his face.
Machida vs. Cane for the next fight?

Machida will make all necessary adjustments and be back..
It just seems like winning the belt becomes a huge distraction for most fighters. They are instantly pulled in a thousand different directions, and most don’t seem to be prepared for it. I think Shogun will be lucky to hold onto the belt for more than 2 fights. Can’t wait to see who Machida gets next. Maybe winner of Franklin/Liddell or Jones/Vladmir? Of course, Forrest is also available to.

Forrest isnt really competition for Machida
but I’d like to see Machida v Liddell or Machida v Jones

I just hope the LHW revolving door comes to a halt with shogun
I would like to see him defend his belt at least a few times. Something about defending a belt, as gsp said its hard to get the belt and even harder to defend it. It must have something to do with the pressure.

Ok, OD. Personally, I feel that Machida needs to work his way back to title contention. No automatic rematch. Hopefully, Shogun will stay champion long enough for Machida - Shogun III.

Shogun vs Machida III will be epic. If Machida destroys the loser of Rampage vs Evans or defeats Lil Nog or Cane, or two of these contenders he will be ready to Shogun.

SHOGUN can lose to any tough fighter who makes it a battle about courage and heart(see forest)
he will win if he is put in there with skill fighters like rashad or machida. if you want to beat shogun, you have to take his shots and take his heart.

The keys are going to be a disciplined game plan and excellent technique. Though Page vs Shogun, heart vs heart I’d say is a 50/50 fight if it happens.

I would have to go with Shogun in the rematch.
But don’t get me wrong in no way would the rematch look anything like the first fight. Page has gottin alot better tho lakes good game plans(i blame his camp). I just dont see Rua breakin Pages ribs again i felt as that was a big factor in there first fight. He got hurt early and couldnt come back from it. And as we all know Page has one of the best chin in the sport today. That would give us a all out war for five rounds not to bad for the fan i tell u.

Hi Eduardo
New to the comments section, but long-time reader. I’ve read quite a few of your quick quotes and wanted to say thanks for all the great material.
How so?
Knockouts happen. anything can happen in the next fight. If Shogun kicked Machidas butt for 5 rounds and dominated him I would say yeah no point. It was a 1st round knockout so this “rivalry” certainly isn’t over.

Tito left looking for greener pastures; was asking the UFC for too much $$$; flirted with Affliction and StrikeForce then went right back to the UFC. If he was right out dismissed I don’t see why they’d resign him without any fights inbetween Machida and the Forrest rematch.

hahaha, that matchup was ridiculous, almost illegal. you can’t be running guys out by putting them up in mismatches b/c ur pissed off and you don’t want them to have anything to say under the contract negotiations..
proffesionalism at it’s best. matchmaking really comes to help when you want to be able to fix fights and “fix” your business.
someone else's success brings pain.
btw, getting knocked out won’t make any man stronger. Machida will come back the same as before and maybe even more “elusive”. I just hope Rampage gets to fight him so he can teach him some boxing and how to defend yourself, cause coming in and out with your chin up in the air isn’t the best D.
someone else's success brings pain.
He won 95% of his fights with the same style.
I don’t think his style is wrong.
This is what happens when you bet on a loser like Cote, I should have listened to David W-S
I don't remember it being
a shot to the chin that started the sequence that led to the KO. Also, see jays post below
no his style is working jay, but the "come back stronger" line is only for pr.
no it wasn’t a shot to the chin DH, but it was because he held his head “chin” up too high going in to the exchange.
someone else's success brings pain.
Sure, sure. Whatever you say...

Hey I'm not alone on that. Most do think that he is boring.
To each their own, he’s just not my type of fighter. I just can’t root for a guy that backs up the whole time. If Machida fought Machida there would be not one fn punch thrown! Not a one!

Over simplification
Machida didn’t just back up lol! He used it to set-up his strikes. He wasn’t backing up when he kicked Tito in the chest and Tito doubled over like a fat kid eating bad food at a buffet.
I think you forget he once was a points fighter so it they are more aware of getting hit and thus giving a point away.

Yes he’s a counter striker and iv said all along very similar to young chuck Liddell standing, both came from karate. However he doesn’t back up all the time, infact I think he’s became a little more aggressive with each fight!! He had shogun on the fence in the first fight, floored tito and ko’d rashad through going forward. Top fighters have to mix it up, I like machida and live his style…that’s what mma is all about peeps;)

Now that is talking sense
Shogun is not unbeatable, his punches are still kind of loopy and a boxer type will exploit that.
I guess people didn’t notice how easy it was for Machida to take Shogun down, he did it once when Shogun was attempting to take Machida down. It makes sense that the better puncher would win and that was Shogun, but I wouldn’t say that Shogun is the best puncher in that division.

Yeah, I take nothing from Shogun
he fought well and deserved it because he wasn’t afraid to take a shot while delivering a shot and I think that is what strikers should be thinking, unlike Daley and Hardy who were more worried about being taken down than imposing their will on their weak chin opponents. This will be Machida's true test
The first fight was close. Even if you think Shogun won it was still a close decision. This is Machida’s first real loss. How he handles this will be his first test. Shogun has been there and has proven his championship charachter by fighting back up the ladder after being schooled by Forrest Griffin (but, but the cardio). Good for Rua and hopefully Machida does come back better than ever. As up and down as this division is I don’t think Rua will be champ by the time Machida climbs his way back up but a rubber match is definitely in the cards if they both keep winning.
Do not. I repeat, do not, go to mma-core.com. I made the mistake of watching a couple UFC 108 bouts on there and I am still trying to get all the viruses of my computer. Ridiculous! You've been warned.

Fans are fans
Lyoto was very respected until the loss and now is the reason for jokes. Unfair jokes. The great question to be answered is weather Machida will come back at the same level of confidence. On his skill there’s nothing to discuss. He wasn’t the champion by chance. Still a huge fan of him.

Yeah,
Machida was doing just fine against Shogun but got caught on the temple – which can daze anyone, which just left Shogun to finish him off. It was looking like a great fight up to that point. To write off his skills and say he’s fought nobody’s is idiotic. He’s beaten plenty of top notch fighters.
totally agree
i keep saying this but Machida is still a massive threat to anyone in the LHW division!
" My style is Whoop that ass" - Rampage Jackson
Good point.
That punch on the temple killed Machida.
"No one wants to be defeated" Michael Jackson on MMA fights
ya but if it wasn’t that punch it would have been another…Shogun knew what he was doing like when he fought chuck, how many times did he just miss chucks head with that over hand right. I read that the Machida strategy was to kick and/or fake kicks and when Machida counters he comes in with those knees with his head straight up and exposed. This is where he was going to hit him, and guess what He did exactly that.
News Flash
Machida isn’t changing anything and he will never beat a prepared Shogun. Hopefully Shogun will reign as UFC Champ KO’ing opponents and not laying on them (GSP) or running away from them (Silva). The only other champ who brings it is BJ who will be back to old form in a few months.

Totally agree with OJ on that
Despite the mass consensus that Shogun kicked Machida’s ass in their first fight both myself and a mate (who both have martial arts and fighting experience) called rounds 1-3 for Machida and 4-5 for Shogun = Machida win. So I don’t think it’s anywhere near as conclusive as others like to think.
Lol at citing fighting/martial arts experience as a basis for legitimizing your opinion
Most professional fighters interviewed gave it to Shogun, Larry Pepe gave it to Shogun, Dana White gave it to Shogun, and in an online poll conducted by MMA junkie 80% of the people participating (their largest response to a poll to date) gave it to Shogun. I think the only people giving the decision to Machida, are the Machida fans..

I think what you're saying O damn -
is based on opinion of who won the overall fight – and yes, watching it purely as a fight you would give it to Shogun, he beat Machida up. However, this is a round based system and Machida won the first 3 out of 5 – that’s where experience in competitive fighting comes in judging the outcome – rather than drunken idiot at pub saying “look, that dude has blood on his face – he got his ass pwned”…
I think what I'm saying is
Fight expert analysts, fight fans, your “drunken idiots” and professional fighters included; an overwhelming majority of the MMA fan base in general (no not just drunks, I’m talkin writers, fighters, radio hosts and the UFC pres himself) felt that the decision was WRONGLY awarded to Machida and that you and OJ are in the smaller % of people OVERALL that argue Machida deserved to win that fight.

bob, you're out of line on this one.
You should let it go.
This is what happens when you bet on a loser like Cote, I should have listened to David W-S
I know I know you people put no stock in Fight Metric cause it must be just a bunch of drunk guys sitting in a pub on a lap top
But GASP Somehow they even managed to give it to Rua on a 10 point must system! WOW!

Yeah but if you went by stats alone -
You’d say Fedor got his ass kicked in his last 2 fights as well – in both he only really landed one good shot, just so happened to KO the other guy with it…
I watched the fight the day after with the sound turned down (as Rogan’s commentary only ever seemed to notice Shogun’s strikes, ignoring Machida’s counters every time) and even trying to be objective Machida still looked the most effective in the first 3 rounds.
Looks like we’ll just have to agree to disagree – at least this last fight was decisive (though I think Machida arguably looked the better of the two until he took the shot on the temple) ;)
Well a finish always makes any other efforts of by the opponent null and void.
But a decision like that one is always gonna leave questions. I just wouldn’t see a 3rd match between the two as a rubber match; I’d be looking at it like Page vs Wand 3 when Wand came in 2-0. Not that I wouldn’t buy the PPV if it went down a 3rd time =P

why is it that everytime someone is retarded I immediately know they are a BE lover?
I mean there are exceptions, but most of the time it’s a lock, kinda like when I drive and someone fucks up, it’s 90% a woman.

Lmfao...
The dude critsizes GSP and Anderson but gives props to penn. O_o
Well, that one in the center: he had a flap holster and he was in no itchin' hurry. And the one second from the left: he had scared eyes, he wasn't gonna do nothin'. But that one on the far left: he had crazy eyes. Figured him to make the first move.
He just likes good fights to watch i think is what he is trying to get at. Not taking anything away from other fighters.
Open up the Shit Gates and where the Hell was Marv?
I’m not saying these fighters are bad, they are the best at what they do, I just want to see good fights…
It's all a matter of opinion.........
I’m not hating on no one, I understand that some people don’t like to watch to GSP and that’s cool, but don’t bash his style, winning is winning………

ok i agree with that But it pisses me off When Goerge and do that and then When Fitch does he gets bashed
Open up the Shit Gates and where the Hell was Marv?
by the way just a friendly chat im not opening the shit gates
Open up the Shit Gates and where the Hell was Marv?
Agreed. Let's not open gates........
I think the reason that Georges doesn’t get as much hate is because unlike fitch he passes guard, does damage (Penn, Fitch, Alves) and he is constantly trying to finish fights. Everyone knows Hardy should have been subbed twice that night, mad props to him for no tapping though…..

I bash that and Shields and Ben Henderson do the same thing…BORING!
everyone’s going nuts for Henderson…all he does is tackle.
no..
he finishes, theres a big difference in wrestling and wrestling witha finish..

he has finished a few but that first supposedly “EPIC” fight with Cerrone was more them rolling around and tryin to see who could hold on to the other
I’m paying to see fights I want to see. I don’t care to see GSP man love on some dude. I guess I could stop paying for his PPV or go out of the room when his fight is on.
"man love on some dude"
Hard to have a convo when you go high shcool on me bro…….

What do you mean Dragon? Penn fights like every 4 months and finishes his opponents? Anderson fights once a year or so and runs. GSP tackles and holds…I ws just saying Penn’s the only champ who consistantly brings it. I want to see exciing fights
That's the problem though.........
Penn isn’t the champ.

Minus his sinus infection he will be. You can’t tell me you weren’t confused wondering what was wrong with him against edgar
Typical Penn...........
Got a big head, didnt’ train properly and gassed out……….

I love BJ Penn
He is my favorite fighter. He brings it. He will fight anyone. You gotta love that. BUT, I am so damn sick of him coming out flabby and so tired of having to come up with excuses as to why he didn’t perform. He didn’t bring it in his last fight. I was disappointed. End of story.
+1

He fought Shoguns fight
He was too aggressive, that is not Machida’s style, he fought Shoguns fight. I think he wanted to win so badly that he was over aggressive which is not his style. He is, and always will be, best at counter punching.
This is sort of like Mayweather in the 2nd round against Mosley when he got caught. He got caught fighting Mosley’s game, he regained his composure and went back to his roots of counter punching.
Thanks Southcali
but come on does anyone think Machida can change? Has he done anything different yet? Or do you think he hasn’t had to so this is why?
Thoughts?
no problem lol
Its his FIRST loss, he hasn’t had to change anything until now.

Why do you think he needs to change
Just because he’s lost 1 fight doesn’t mean he needs to re-invent himself. Sometimes you just lose.

Machida needed this loss. He’ll probably come back the way GSP did after his loss to Serra and start tearing through the LHWs again to become champion.
Yeah I agree he is still the second best LHW in the world
I see Rua & Machida going to be in another battle and a great rivalry in MMA maybe one of the greatest. Right now they are 1-1 agaisnt eachother regardless of opinion.
"Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth - Mike Tyson
they should have machida fight jon jones but that would mean a second loss.
the ufc will give him forrest griffin. you heard it here first.

Long time reader...
new to the comments. This was a disappointing fight for me. Being a Machida fan, it hurt to watch, and it seemed he was anxious to fight aggressively to prove all the haters wrong. It backfired. Congrat to Shogun.
