Rampage Jackson or Rashad Evans? It doesn't make a difference to Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua

"We don't work so hard all year around, we have phases of training, it's like a cycle. My team always takes care of everything but definitely, it's going to be a new challenge for me to defend that belt, because it was a dream come true, I conquered it, and now I'm going to work on my mind to keep my motivation. It can be bad for me but I'm going to work hard so it doesn't affect my performances. I think Rampage [will win], but it's close to 50/50 to me. I'd say 55% for Rampage, 45% Rashad. To me Rampage or Rashad, it doesn't make a difference, they are both top fighters. But a fight against Rampage would be good ... for the pay-per-view. I'm a professional fighter, I never pick my opponents, I'd fight anyone. Anderson (Silva) can be a big challenge to my career, but I'm used to them."
Newly-crowned UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Mauricio Rua looks forward to finding out who will be his first title defense when the two men vying for the spot face off at UFC 114 on May 29. "Rampage" Jackson has already been taken out by "Shogun" when they first met under the PRIDE banner back in 2005. Will history repeat itself? Or will "Sugar" Rashad make sure they never get the chance to find out?

Shogun vs. Anderson would be epic.........
Well, that one in the center: he had a flap holster and he was in no itchin' hurry. And the one second from the left: he had scared eyes, he wasn't gonna do nothin'. But that one on the far left: he had crazy eyes. Figured him to make the first move.
for sure..has it been officially announced that Page/Shad get the next shot?

Yeah yesterday Dana said that.............
But you know how it goes, the way I figure if one of them finishes the other they would def get a title shot. But if for some reason they have a 3 round snoozer and rashad happens to pull it off, something else would probably be set up…………..

Exactly,
it will depend on how the fight goes; though with those two I don’t see it being a snoozer, unless Shad smothers Page for 3 rds in route to a decision.

But who now for Machida? I’d love to see Anderson/Shogun but I just don’t see it happening. I think we’ll see Machida/Shogun 3 in 2011

Nah I don't like that fight
After Lil Nog trucks Brilz they should give him Machida; which will be Lyoto’s 2nd carreer loss and probably by TKO stoppage again. I think Shogun just gave everyone the keys to victory there; Machida has an elusive, awkward style but it’s been countered and figured out. Now that guys got tape to study they can see what to look for. Not that he won’t work on his weaknesses but I’ve never seen Machida as some P4P great. I always said he was overrated; a good fighter but not great. Hard worker, dedicated, disciplined, but lacking the natural freak athletic talent that a lot of the greats possess.

Great post Odamn!
I also thought he was a bit overrated, but I also never liked him. I think the first fight was more of a blueprint on how to get to Machida though. Machida was out of his norm with his agression and it paid in the last fight. But yea leg kicks def get Machida out of his cmfort zone. And someone mentioned this the other day and I agree,“Machida doesn’t like to be hit!” His next fight will tell a lot!
If Machida didn't like to get hit he would found a way out of his 1st fight with Shogun. Or he would not have tried to be aggressive with Shogun in the rematch. Sounds like a weak, Machida hating theory to me.

How many fighters can be as agressive as Shogun at LHW and still be effective?
Spider and lil Nog (maybe)?
So a guy who won his first 17 fights has been figured out? Good luck on that gameplan, boys.

You can't think of fighters that never looked the same after they got KO'd?
Cro Cop never looked the same after Gonzaga; Wand never looked the same after CC; Arlovski was timid/gun shy for a long time after the Sylvia loss; it happens and you don’t know how a guy is going to react until he gets back in there and fights again.

Its no secret that Shogun is a true fighter who will fight anyone.
All he wanted was his title, now that he has it Im sure all he cares about is getting the Biggest fights which equal the biggest pay days. He wont ever turn down a fight, and thats all you can ask for out of a champion, and theres really no point in ducking fighters at 205, since the entire division is filled with animals. If you are a fight ducker, your only option is to cut down to middleweight, cause you can avoid animals in the UFC LHW division. The man went toe to toe with the “Invincible” Machida, for a total of 28 minutes, beating him twice….Who the hell is he gonna duck? He grew up sparring with Anderson when Shogun was only like 18 years old, so he wont fear him either. He already beat Rogerio, in an epic fight. He destroyed Rampage. Why would he duck anyone? Does anyone think he is really afraid of Rashad, Forrest or Thiago Silva (who Im sure he has sparred with before at chutebox)?
But they seem to be the turning point in both carreers

MMA GURU was saying that the CC KO for Wand and the Gonzaga KO for CC
Weren’t the first times they got KO’d in their carreers; my point was that they were both turning points in their carreers and that you don’t know how a KO loss will effect a fighter until you see them fight again. Basically insinuating that this could have a negative effect on Machida.

Hate to jump in the lovefest but...
CroCop was KTFO by Kevin Randalman way before GG caught him with that head kick. Vitor Belfort DESTROYED Wandy way back in the day in less than a minute. And after the rubber mach with ole Timmy, AA won 5 straight. 4 by KO or TKO from punches. But… you are very right. You never know how someone will come back from something like that.

LOL Found his way out??? Like what? Quit?
And just maybe he was aggressive in the 2nd fight so he could end it….without getting hit. You may not agree, but doesn’t make it any less plausable.
Bow, if he didn't like to get hit, then why did he become a professional fighter? Your theory holds little credibility. Your dislike for his style has skewed your view point.

Even with a devastating KO
It still doesn’t guarantee Shad or Page the shot. Look at Hendo/Nate. Promises are made due to dominant KO’s then taken away when a newer “more improved” KO causes Dana to open his mouth and say “Well, I think its safe to say we have a new #1 contender”, forgetting other prior statements.
Perhaps Dana should learn to count to 5 in his head before he speaks, lol not trying to be a jerk, but I think he maybe gets a little excited and blurts out things faster then his brain can keep up to say “No man! Don’t say that!”.

I love it when people say a figher is not great
If Machida isn’t a great fighter, who is? People were saying the same thing about Shogun after Forrest and Coleman. It’s like to some fans you’re only as good as your last fight.
And what are the keys to victory against Machida? Be a better fighter? In the second fight, Shogun got taken down but had enough skills to get back up — does everyone have that? Before the flurry that knocked down Machida, Shogun ate a vicious knee to the midsection. Can everyone take that?
Shogun is a great fighter, that’s how he beat Machida. There’s no blueprint out there.
They are saying the only fighter without a opponent at the moment is Forrest......
So I’m guessing Machida vs. Forrest……….Poor Forrest. lol

Griffin loses to Shogun and he is forever a gatekeeper that happened to win TUF 1. He wins and will be remembered for a very long time as a champion.

I don't think so, OD. Putting aside your contempt for Machida's style, you should consider his accomplishments. Machida is too talented to go on a losing streak just because he got KO'ed.

I agree that Page’s history suggests he hates training HOWEVER he has only lost once since becoming an UFC fighter. His pure talent is still better than most “well trained” athletes ability.

Well, we'll see
The guy had a certain mystique to him before he met up with Shogun. And in a lot of people’s eyes he’s lost to Shogun twice. That’s two recent fights future opponents can look to for answers; the more tape on a guy, the more ammo they can come in with. I think he’s figured out; time will tell, but I don’t expect to see him in the title picture again.

When Rogan said Machida had hurt his hand before the fight I knew he was going to lose.
I wish Dana would stop announcing title shots to the winner type matches. I think it does affect the way they fight. What if both fighters get banged up? He should just have the best contender at the time that the champ is ready to fight. I think Evans takes out Rampage and also Shogun because he is a true Mixed Martial Artist. His wrestling is the trump card on both those matches.

Cane is fighting on May 29
Luiz Cane is fighting Cyrille Diabate at UFC 114 on the undercard. That´s a fight that deserves to be on the main card. I want Machida to build his confidence back up and the way for him to do that is to fight Forrest.
Machida
Machida is still better than everyone else in that LHW division apart from Shogun at this time, I can still see him destroying pretty much everyone when he returns.
" My style is Whoop that ass" - Rampage Jackson
I think if Rampage wins he should get a shot...
But if Rashad wins by decision, he doesn’t deserve it. He got KTFO by Machida and then won razorthin almost getting finished by Thiago Silva, who Machida also owned. Only if Rashad finishes Rampage, he deserves a shot in my opinion.
Lesnar > [Carwin] ---> Lesnar > [Velasquez] ---> Lesnar > [JDS]
Overeem will NOT show up on May 15th! Mark my words. Sig stays til then.
It's going to be Rashad.
Rampage got mad boxing skills but Rashad has both punches and kicks. He’ll win the fight and pose a bigger threat to Shogun than Rampage.
I wouldn't make that bet
Rampage also has mad wrestling skills to go with his boxing….and exactly how can a person with no chin (Rashad) beat a guy like Shogun who will test his chin like he did Machida.
I believe Rampage poses the biggest threat to shogun because of #1 his punch defense which is the best in the business and and #2 his chin which is made of granite.
It is much easier to knock out guys who aren’t used to getting hit in the face ie Machida, Rashad, Matt Hughes, and even GSP once.

Funny how Rashad loses one fight
and now he has no chin. He has been clipped in almost all of his fights and ended up winning them all except for the Lyoto fight. Do you think Thigo Silva has a good chin (boy got KTFO) or are we just haten for the sake of haten lol? I still dont see why most hate Shad, I do understand that when you are the best people want to see you fail, maybe thats it!
I agree,
Page has wrestling but so does Rashad. Page is just a brawler (a good brawler), he cant out skill any of the top guys. Shad is tough and it took the best in the game at that point to hand him his first loss!!
I know you u know better than that
I don’t see how you would call Rampage a brawler. A brawler is someone like Pete Sell or Phil Baroni, Rampage is more technically sound than anyone in his division at boxing.
Besides that, where did I say anywhere that I hate Shad? I believe Page is better and he has been doing it longer and has fought much tougher guys.

If Page ever threw a jab(half of boxings offense) I would say his boxing is good.
Throwing hook after hook is not boxing, it is brawling.

I think you are talking about Wandy not Page
So you are telling me that Page never throws a Jab??? I got plenty of video of him throwing jabs….There is nothing wrong with throwing hooks if they are effective ( also part of boxing offense) Ask Chuck and Wandy if they are effective. Hooks are still boxing strikes and brawlers mostly wing punches and dont throw hooks see Forrest Griffin Vs Bonnar 1 or 2. That is brawlin!

I get what you are saying
but I wouldn’t call him a brawler. It’s kind of in between but he does tend to just hook.
by GoldenSt8OfMind on May 13, 2010 12:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Yup, the word brawler means
something different to Jay. I believe that if the hook is the most effective strike in your arsenal then you would be a fool not to use it. Page throws straights and crosses as well since a hook only works well when you are inside.

My question:
Is anyone gonna hold this belt for longer than one title defense? It’s been a while.
Hadoken!!
absolutely no chance.
theres a reason its been a revolving door at 205 for quite some time now, its the most competitive division in MMA.
btw, does anyone else thing shad is going to just take rampage down and GNP him for 3 rounds to a decision? cuz thats how i see this playing out.

truth.
i mean he was taken down twice pretty effortlessly by machida, who is not well known for his extreme wrestling. styles make fights and while id love to see page vs shogun II, i just have to believe that shad is gonna win both these fights in the same fashion. takedowns and gnp.

Not too sure about that
Shogun’s striking can be overwelming to people who don’t have punch defense but Shogun’s reaching punch style will get him KO’ed with a more technical striker.

Wasn't Lyoto as technical as they come
Agree, he does get careless at times, but then again that’s everyone. He has implemented high guard on to his game and avoided some of lyoto’s punches. However, it seems like just about everyone get ktfo/tko’ed out at least once…

And neither had
Machida until Saturday. Styles make fights and Shogun is a bad matchup for Lyoto. Page would be tough for Machida too because Page is aggressive like Shogun.

I should clarify
technical boxing skills is what Lyoto doesn’t have which is why he got countered…AGAIN I am talking about punch defense combined with countering. Lyoto is technical but not a technical boxer which is why he got clocked, a boxer would have covered up and then thrown the counter hook/jab/uppercut after Lyoto initial strike.
Props to Shogun for standing in the pocket, however Shogun will get countered if he fights a proficient boxer.

by WarriorSaint on May 13, 2010 9:04 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, karate doesn't really teach good defense at least when it come to their face, I guess it must
be the reason why lyoto’s stance is about a 110degrees leans backwards when he stands and strikes.
Also, thinking of it more, yeah, gotta agree on the difference between a proficient boxer and someone without that bg. There really isn’t anyone in the LHW division that come close to being a proficient boxer or with a decent enough standup game to do that to shogun. The closest people whose game came close to such was perhaps chuck and lyoto, but both got KTFO.
Oh almost forgot about lil nog, saw the first fight again about a week ago and you’re right, lil nog countered and rocked shogn a few time and vice versa. Great fight, should be interesting if they should fight again, also the spider fight should be interesting or with vitor.

Be careful what you wish for
Shogun better be careful what he wishes for!!! Anderson is a way better fighter than Machida, and Anderson I think would knock Shogun…. It would be hard for Shogun to attack and counter against Anderson because of Anderson’s movement!!!! It would take Shogun out of his game!!! Forget Vitor vs Anderson!!! After Sonnen vs Anderson, set Anderson up with the winner of the Shogun vs Rampage/Evans fight!!!! Also could throw in winner of Lesnar/Carwin vs Cain? That would be two great fights!!!
Since the last comment was Shogun not being able to handle a Anderson....
Both Shogun and Anderson are very aggressive, very talented fighters both have great jits, knock out power and go for the kill…. This I hope would be a Primetime show… WTF… How did Rashad and Quinton get a Primetime for there battle??? That is bull s…. Machida and Shogun should have had one with there second battle…. Oh well Dana white doesn’t favor the Brazilian fighter…. Hopefully, with the winner of Rashad and Quinton they will have one for Shogun and the winner….
