Strikeforce Quick Quote: Scott Coker's in no hurry to sign Paul Daley and Kimbo Slice

Coker-speaks_medium

"I'm sure we'll get a call, but let's what happens. Who knows? [Daley] could be on suspension for four to six months. He's not going to be able to fight. I don't think that type of reaction or behavior from a fighter will be accepted. It's just unacceptable. You're like the sixth person who's contacted me saying, ‘Hey, you have to put together Herschel Walker vs. Kimbo Slice.' The thing is with Kimbo is he was successful with the ratings, but when we purchased (the contracts) from Pro Elite, the deal at that time (for Kimbo), we felt was too rich for long-term viability...We haven't revisited it internally yet, so as of right now I think we're going to stick with our course, which is putting on the best fighters in the world in the best matchups. The fighters that are important to develop our reach and growth, and are important to Showtime and CBS, we're going to keep those fighters. We've proven that we can stay in the game at the highest level with these athletes because believe me, Fedor (Emelianenko) is not a cheap fighter."

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker tells Sherdog.com that he's not exactly running to sign recently ousted UFC fighters Paul Daley and Kimbo Slice -- both of whom were passed over when the San Jose-based fight promotion first acquired the remaining contracts from Pro Elite, the parent company of Elite XC back in 2009. "Semtex" was given the heave-ho for taking a swipe at Josh Koscheck (after the bell) following their welterweight scrap at UFC 113 last Saturday night. Slice may also be on the unemployment line after being bounced from The Ultimate Fighter 10 and then turning in a losing effort to Matt Mitrione, also at UFC 113. The question is, if Strikeforce doesn't want them, where will they end up? And how much are they worth on the open market? Predictions please.

Kimbo could be S.O.L

unless he wants to fight for a lot less. Daley will get signed, it’s a done deal imo.

Is that a slam...

towards D White? lol Either way, Coker runs the 2nd rate company and Dana runs the top, he can use as many F bombs as he wants.

Fedor played Russian Roulette with a fully loaded gun and won... but still avoids the UFC!

Coker does not have near the control over SF that Dana has over the UFC

and that leads to trouble… SF is 2nd rate, its obvious!

I disagree with what you say, but I will fight to the death for your right to say it

by PHISH NATION on May 10, 2010 6:51 PM EDT up reply actions

They should be

They should be second rate. They are only 3 years old. Strikeforce is only a year and a half on telivision. They will probably never be better than the second best promotion which I am not sure if they are that yet. If you are old enough to remember the UFC 6 years ago, they were a 3rd rate promotion. If it was not for the ultimate fighter reality show they would have gone bankrupt. The majority of thier fighters back then were not even the top level guys. So I think strikeforce is doing just fine for how young they are. They are putting on as good as shows at thier age as the Zuffa UFC was at the same age.

Yes I know. But kickboxing event and mma event are two different sports. Two different sets of fighters. Two completely different market viewers.

Them being in business with kickboxing that long just goes to show that they know how to run a successful business. You are just stupid if you try and compare Strikeforce of today vs UFC of today. Compare the two when they were at the same age.

He’s a moron. And UFC was est in 1993 so forget the kickboxing crap. And UFC didn’t turn into what it is now the day the Lorennza’s and Dana took over. Get a clue. It took years to build to what it is. But SF somehow is supposed to pass UFC already. You guys are so blind man.

by delldog on May 10, 2010 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Daley vs Diaz would be a perfect match-up...

And better than any the UFC could offer.

I know many people, especially in the US love their wrestlers but I (any many others) find most of their “fights” very dull. Active wrestling which leads to a sub or at least some ferocious GnP (a’la Fedor’s sambo) is great – but it seems to me more and more UFC events have at least 1 or 2 lay n’ pray fights (don’t kid yourself that moving from guard to half-guard and back is actively fighting) which should be stood up much faster than they are. Wrestling control without effective damage shouldn’t be scored as highly as it is. People hate clinchers in boxing and lay n’ pray wrestling is exactly the same – you could lay on me for 3 hours but it doesn’t mean you kicked my ass.

There’s a reason the crowd boo when this happens and it isn’t just because they’re uneducated – I’ve practised martial arts most of my life and have 2 black belts as well as kickboxing experience. I find it stupid when the booing starts during an exciting ground battle (which happens often), but many times it IS justified. People who go on about Kos/Fitch/Sonnen etc being “well rounded” are deluding themselves – they’re wrestlers with minor striking, just so happens that wrestling is effective in MMA, especially against similarly “well rounded” strikers who have some ground game but can never hope to compete against a division 1 wrestler (a’la Daley, Hardy, Bisping due to no wrestling training in UK schools).

Just bored of grinding wins that yes, the winner did control, but were not “fights”, they were wrestling matches at best.

As for Kimbo, his knees won’t hold up for any form of pro-wrestling. True, he’d easily be defeated in MMA, but c’mon, Japan has some fights like that. Might be his best bet for the moment… if not with DREAM, there’s always Sengoku (Ishii vs. Kimbo?).

As daft as it sounds that fight would be a draw, Reid is a household name in this country because of his skanky wife Jordan (they’re our Tito and Jenna) and Semtex is a top 10 WW and now one of the most notorious guys in the sport.

As for Kimbo he can face Barnett and Tank in those crappy Japanese wrestling promotions or do a shit reality show on Spike. TNA might try to get him as well, if they signed Frank Trigg, Tito, Marcus Davis and made Pacman Jones their tag champion then they’ll sign anyone.

Paul Daley is alot better than most of the welterweights in SF right now. Coker should get him signed up, I dont see Daley going to fight in Japan again. Im pretty sure Dana is going to regret making such a snappy decision especially as Daley was becoming one of the UK’s poster boys meaning alot of cash from UK audiences. But thats just what i think. by JamPark on May 11, 2010 8:49 AM EDT reply actions

UFC doesn't need anyone to make them money!

Dana is more concerned about how his company looks than one guy who may be a draw. Daley isn’t a draw at all (compared to Kimbo) and he made the right choice. He could build up anyone if he wanted to, it’s just the power he has!

by kevjack115 on May 11, 2010 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Dailey sux

Dailey is one dimensional and there is no point of keeping someone like that in the UFC, especially when they take cheap shots. Kos, Fitch, Hardy, St Pierre, Alves will all smoke him. He was exposed in this fight with KOS and dana doesnt need him.

by Mir on May 11, 2010 9:18 AM EDT reply actions

So...

Daley is one dimensional and Fitch is not? Made this point a few times now – only strikers get called one dimensional, whereas everyone seems to hang off the nuts of wrestlers. I don’t get it. People say “watch boxing” or “K1” – well you watch WWE if that’s what you want to see. I’d rather see a fight that involves some actual fighting, one man laying on top of another or “mounting” him without any actual attack or attempt to finish involved is another kind of entertainment altogether…

You can say that Fitch etc can strike as a counter argument but I bet all the strikers in MMA could submit the average guy on the street in seconds too, they just don’t wrestle as well as the wrestlers who have done it since school, wrestling takedowns and control just happen to be valued more highly in MMA than strikes are.

by Jimrod on May 11, 2010 10:48 AM EDT up reply actions

Completely not true

Kerr, Coleman, Palhares, Maia, Sherk, Werdum, Matt Hughes etc.. all excellent grapplers and all have been called one dimensional at one time or another. Some of the best fighters in MMA are known for their striking; if a guy takes another guy down and controls him the better part of the fight then yea he’s going to get the decision. If the striker can stuff the TD’s and out point a grappler standing then they’ll get the decision. This bias your talking about doesn’t exist; if anything it’s the opposite as the fans support and enjoy the strikers fights more than anything else. Fitch’s striking is good enough to survive standing long enough to get the fight where he needs to get it to win. Not pretty, not exciting, but it gets the job done. My only knock on Fitch is that he doesn’t finish guys.

Daley has showed improvement and survived on the ground vs a top level wrestler for 3 rds. Is he completely ignorant of the ground game? No; but is he gonna win a fight down there with top control/sub/GnP? Probably not.

Strikeforce does want Daley, but Coker claims patience

Los Angeles, CA—May11, 2010—Strikeforce bigwig, Scott Coker wouldn’t know how to handle Paul Daley, but he does know the Athletic Commission might be ready to impose sanctions and fines that include suspensions. Daley pulled his bonehead move, by sucker punching Josh Koscheck after he lost the 3 round UFC battle of Welterweights. The problem with Coker is he doesn’t have what it takes to lay down the law. Case in point: the Nashville Brawl as opposed to the Daley Punch, in which UFC President Dana White was quick to delve out a handy decree: Ban Daley from the UFC. Coker blamed Jason Miller for the incident in Nashville, claiming Miller knew what to expect from the Strikeforce (Gracie) clan. Instead of dishing out punishments, the most Coker did was point the finger. What a man to work for! It is possible Coker does not have too many followers, since he has a problem in decision making. He also seems to have an issue with who has the most potential to hurt him. Miller is no threat to Coker, but the Cesar Gracie Clan? The Diaz Brothers are in that cult, for goodness sake! No wonder he was quick to point the blame on Miller and not the true culprits, including el niño and fat boy. Imagine if that happened at a UFC event? Heads would roll. Not on Strikeforce, and that is probably why CBS stopped all negotiations with Strikeforce. He can’t contain his boys and can’t promise that will never happen again.

Making a difference.
