Bellator 13 results recap: Roger Huerta, Joe Warren advance in tournament action
Roger Huerta moved a step closer to a shot at the Bellator Fighting Championships lightweight tournament title Thursday night with a convincing victory over the previously undefeated Chad Hinton in front of an adoring crowd at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla.
The action-packed fight was the high point of Bellator 13, which marked Bellator’s Season 2 debut and its first live, nationwide broadcast on FOX Sports Net. The near-capacity crowd included Academy Award nominated actor Mickey Rourke and Super Bowl winner and NFL superstar Jeremy Shockey, who both came to cheer on Huerta in his first appearance under the Bellator banner.
In the night’s other tournament bouts, Joe Warren and Carey Vanier advanced into the semifinals of the featherweight and lightweight divisions and Georgi Karakhanyan advanced to the semifinals at featherweight with a highlight reel knockout of Bao Qauch.
But the night’s most talked-about fight will most certainly be the stirring match-up between the heavily-favored Huerta and Hinton, a 38-year-old Cincinnati native who refused to go down easy.
Hinton started strong and held his own during round one, but the momentum shifted early in round two when Huerta took Hinton to the ground and began rotating between ground-and-pound and a series of crushing hammer fists. Hinton was able to escape the round, but lasted only 56 seconds into round three when he was locked into a Huerta knee-bar.
"Chad Hinton was no joke," said Huerta, who improved his record to 21-3-1. "And that’s part of why I love Bellator. Just because a guy like Chad hasn’t been publicized and hasn’t been on TV before doesn’t mean he’s not a great fighter. It was an honor to be out there with him and an honor to fight for Bellator. I’m happy to be back."
Bellator founder and CEO Bjorn Rebney, who announced Huerta’s signing last month, called his return to the cage "great to watch."
"Roger Huerta is back and he’s going to pose a big threat to all the other fighters at 155," Rebney said. "He showed us a full arsenal of everything that he has to offer tonight and it was very impressive."
In the night’s other highly anticipated fight, Warren, the former world champion Greco-Roman wrestler and NCAA all-American improved his record to 3-1 with a unanimous decision over 17-3 Eric Marriott in the quarterfinals of Bellator’s eight-man featherweight tournament.
Warren took the fight to the ground just 20 seconds into the first round and kept it there for all three rounds, switching between half mount and full mount and wearing Marriott down with a series of blows to the head. The fight wasn’t without its scary moments for Warren, however.
Roughly four minutes into round one, he was able to narrowly escape a Marriott armbar. The crafty Marriott then immediately shifted into a triangle choke, but Warren was able to hold on until the end of the round.
"I give Eric Marriott a lot of credit – that was a tight, tight triangle," Warren said. "It was great technique and the bell definitely saved me. But I got out and I won and I’m excited to move on to the next round."
In the first televised tournament fight of the night—a quarterfinal matchup in Bellator’s eight-man featherweight tournament—Karakhanyan (13-1-1), a former pro soccer star, dominated MMA veteran Quach from start to finish, connecting with a variety of high leg kicks before finishing him via TKO with a brutal knee to the head 4:05 into round one.
"My corner was telling me to circle around and take my time and I capitalized and knocked him out," Karakhanyan said. "As soon as we clinched, I started throwing my knees and I connected and finished the fight. I’m excited to move on."
In the night’s fourth and final televised tournament bout, Vanier (8-2) made an impressive case that he is a fighter to watch in the lightweight tournament, finishing former Army Ranger and Purple Heart honoree Joe Duarte (5-2) via TKO at 4:14 in round three.
"It was a really good fight for me," said Vanier, a former all-American wrestler at Minnesota’s Augsburg College said. "It went exactly the way my camp and me thought it would go … We stuck to our game plan and it turned out well."
All four tournament fights will re-air this Saturday night during special late-night highlight shows on NBC and Telemundo. Thursday night’s event also included four Local Feature Fights between up-and-coming fighters from South Florida.
The results are as follows:
- Chris Manuel (7-3-2) def. Ralph Acosta (5-5) via guillotine choke (10:35)
- Mikey Gomez (10-8) def. Moyses Gabin (4-3) via unanimous decision
- Edson Diniz (10-3) def. John Kelly (4-1) via knee bar (4:36)
- Vagner Rocha (4-0) def. Francisco Soares (3-2-1) via TKO (7:07)

what are the purses like in bellator?
Fedor invented a language that incorporates Sambo and Kimuras.
So next time FEDOR is kicking your ass, don't be offended or hurt, he may be just trying to tell you he likes your hat.
If i remember right.....
10 show 10 win 1st rd
25 show 25 win 2nd rd
50 show 50 win 3rd rd
So someone will make about 175K total once he wins the tourney and probly gets big pay to fight the division champ. Very impressive structure and great incentive for big prospects and everyone to try to shine as much as possible in their time there. Obviously big names like alvarez, hector, Huerta have slightly different contractual agreements.

You’d be hard pressed to be a no name in any other league and make 100k to win your 3rd fight. Okay so there is NO other league like that. Lol.

i've thought about this once before
…and on second thought, I truly think a guy would be better off to attempt this tourney if given the chance, even over a UFC start. If you win it you’re about 175k wealthier, have some big league’ISH experience. Then you also have instant small crowd recognition and UFC bargaining tools. If you go 2-1 try out for TUF next season.

Bellator will be a huge success, because the guy Running it (Bjorn) is a really smart dude!
Bellator will continue to improve! Some of the best fights last year took place under the bellator banner!
Huerta is a pro man
The rest of these dudes may be good but they are not UFC caliber fighters. Its like throwing Jordan into a college basketball game…lets be real!
Chad hinton no joke???
LOL the guy is 6-1 and Roger is st8 up 21-3-1. How is that even a close matchup? Dumbest promotion/tournament ever.
Who cares?
Its the first round of a tournament ffs, so demian maia is 9-1 vs anderson silva’s extensive record, i guess youre not crying about that one though?

Look at maia's recrod
Look who he had to fight. Also he is fighting dudes int he UFC which makes him legit.
At some point
Silva’s record was also filled with non-UFC fighters.. So he couldn’t possible be great at some point either? Oh wait……
Alvaraz and Huerta should not be in this!!!!!!
Wish this thing let you edit posts instead of putting one after another.
dunno i just watched the Huerta fight,
and it was bloody enjoyable… who cares about what org people fight for, and as for saying they are fighting bums basically well ok they might not be house hold names, but either was jon jones 3 fight ago.
So having legit guys like Alverez n Huerta etc give up and comers a chance to make there name, and make it into the so called big league illustrious UFC
Every night i would pray to God for a new bike, then i realized God does not work that way, so i stole one and asked him to forgive me
i liked it.
My first time seeing a bellator fight it wuz kool an good camera shots not like sum of the other small promos wit low budget filming. An the Huerta fight wuz good for such a long lay off.
YOU CANT PLEASE EVERYBODY SO YOU MIGHT AS WELL PLEASE YOU!!!!!!!
good fights
the whole show was really good. The Huerta fight had some really exciting moments. Nothing amazing though but definitely impressive for the first night. Plus Huerta’s escape when Hinton had back control, that was nice. Good execution.
This show was a massive dissappointment for me. MASSIVE
I was actually looking forward to seeing Bellator. All I saw from the first season were some nice highlights that were posted online so I wanted to see this season.
First off my cable box guide said the show would start at 10. I started having a few beers at 9:30 and then tuned to FSN at 10……..to see a Dallas Stars post game press conference. WTF????
Then at 10:30 it was the “Outdoors report.” Some stupid fishing show. Finally at 11 FSN sais that “Due to the runing time of our previous show we now give you a show in progress” another WTF? I missed the first hour because of the running time of some crappy fishing show???
The show starts and it throws us into the 2nd round of a fight. Finishes the round, goes to commercial and when it comes back it says due to time constraints we are moving forward. THEY SKIPPED THE 3RD FUCKING ROUND AND JUST SHOW THE DECISION. I’ve never seen any MMA brodcast where they skip a round like that. Then they waste a bunch of time talking to a drunk Jeremy Shockey and Mickey Rourke. If time was an issue they could have skipped that and showed some fighting.
Then they fluff up Huerta with his little promo video and start his fight with an older opponent who was obvioulsy handpicked for him to get a win over. And guess what happened with this fight?? THEY SKIPPED THE 3RD FUCKING ROUND AGAIN DUE TO TIME CONSTRAINTS. WTF!?!?!?!?! I didn’t even know how Huerta won until I went online. They showed no replay of his win.
Then they show all 3 rounds of the Duarte fight which was a borefest to me with a weak TKO ending. I honestly Enjoyed watching IFLshows more than this.
They need to get their shit together if they want to gain viewers.
Confucius says:
"Baseball is wrong; man with four balls cannot walk."
Sounds like a programming disappointment, not a Bellator disappointment.
Can’t bunk a competition because a cable company can’t do their job. Then again, I had all four fights in full with minimal commercials inbetween. Even the fluff for the other fights as well. Might need to check with your cable provider, bud.
With the exception of the Duarte match (to a degree), I thought the fights all went extremely well…wayyy better than the other non-UFC & SF promotions (hell, even some of those too) on air right now like KOTC, MFC, XFC, et al.
