hughes is a legend in the twilight of his career with nothing left to prove. hes gonna fight fights that pad his bank account and present an interesting challenge for him. he didnt say “i wont take a fight that i dont feel will challenge me” he said “i wouldnt take a fight i didnt think i can win”. with is EVERY fighter’s mentality. no one accepts a fight and says “man, im gonna get my shit kicked”. yeah, he knows the AKA boys are prob too young and spry for him. but he also knows they are gonna end up getting far in the sport regardless if they fight him. its not like hughes is expecting another title shot, anyway.

he refuses to fight Koscheck on the grounds that it doesn’t offer him anything to prove… come on… it proves he is a legit contender and still relevent. going in there and fighting washed up has-beens is a straight paycheck with zero challenge and he knows it. “hi i am matt hughes… let me fight royce gracie to cement my legacy but then refuse to fight a younger guy to give him a chance to do the same… all the while knowing that if i win, it will put me in direct title contention.”
i think he looked at Liddell’s recent fights and said eff it. that ain’t gonna be me. at least he could come out and say it thought. to suggest that the AKA guys wouldn’t prove enough of a challenge is pure balderdashery of the highest caliber.
