UFC Quick Quote: Takanori Gomi reflects on his 'utter defeat' at Fight Night 21
Damn it is frustrating. I was moving pretty well, constantly applying pressure. I want to acclimate myself to the Octagon a little bit more and get myself into the groove. I will continue my challenge (in UFC) as long as I am physically capable. I won't make any excuses but everything will eventually fall into its place. I struck out on my first at-bat, so I will strive to get a hit next time around. The major league (UFC) is no joke, and Wanderlei Silva and Mirko Cro Cop also faced hardship. It was an utter defeat. There are a lot of things I need to improve.
Former PRIDE Lightweight Champion and Japanese import Takanori Gomi comments to the Japanese media about his place on the growing list of fighters who have found it difficult to make their overseas success translate into a winning performance inside the Octagon. In addition to Wandy and Cro Cop, "Shogun" Rua also went belly up in his UFC debut but is now back on track after turning things around. Can "The Fireball Kid" re-ignite his career under the Zuffa banner despite his crushing loss to Kenny Florian at last month's UFC Fight Night 21? Time will tell...

Give him Sherk next
keeps himself relevent to make the climb and Sean likes to box…
either way in should be fun to watch.

NO way! The perfect opponent for Gomi, is Frank Edgar after he loses to BJ!
Stylistically, Edgar/Gomi is an awesome match up!
that would put 2 guys with massive potential down 2 fights in a row.
Give Gomi a guy who is trying to make a name for himself. Jim Miller? Sam Stout? Bring back Rich Clementi. or Clay Guida. Joe Stevenson. These guys are respected names, and I’d say on the same level as Gomi is now. For Gomi, he gets a solid win over a solid competitor, and a win for anyone else keeps them on the brink of the UFC top 10.
As for Sherk, I dont think we’ll see him back again. He’s been injured for his last 3 fights and had to withdraw, and the guy is like, 34 or 35 years old. I think Sherk is going to retire soon.

Some good names there
So much talent throughout this division. I think Miller is on the brink of the upper echelon in the division – a match-up with Joe Daddy would be nice. I’d really like to see Stout take on Gomi.
MMA is Life
How about Spencer Fisher
Haven’t seen him for a while and he likes to stand and bang. Plus I consider him a legit gatekeeper…if Gomi couldn’t get past him I would seriously doubt his UFC future whereas if he was able to win put him against someone a little higher up the chain i.e. Guida or Joe Daddy. Is Spencer scheduled for any upcoming fights after he withdrew from injury?

+1
I think Fisher would be an ideal challenge for him…if he can’t get by a stand up brawler then he has no chance against the upper echelon of the division.

Florian was an absolutely horrible match-up for anyone making his octagon debut. Trying to figure out the differences between the cage and a ring and adjust to elbows, which Florian throws as well as anyone in the UFC is too much to handle right off the bat.
The weather is here, I wish you were beautiful
Crocop didnt go belly up dogg
He won his first fight, we all know why Shogun lost so its whateva Gomi is just kinda done i mean seriously Sengoku is the 3rd best division and he couldnt even cut it there so its no surprise that he lost in the UFC vs the 2nd best guy the UFC has to offer Kenny mo’fuka Florian.
SF/Dream>UFC>Sengoku

Shogun
Lost to Forest because he wasn’t in shape and got tapped?
Is that what we know?
Shogun lost a close decision! Everyone get crazy!
I think only the willingly blind would take Forrest over Shogun as the more well rounded better overall skilled fighter..
Yea there were extenuating circumstances there, whether the Forrest fans want to admit it or not.

well
I’m not really a Forest Fan, I mean I like Forest and I like Shogun, I don’t let my ‘likes’ blind me to the real world.
Shogun lost that fight because he gassed himself trying to finish Forest and underestimated his durability, and he couldn’t, would he have won if he was in better shape? Maybe/probably.
Would BJ have beat GSP the first time if was in shape? probably.
Would Gonzaga have beaten Fabricio Werdum had been in better shape? Probably.
Would Mark Coleman have beaten Shogun had he been in better shape. Probably (though not if Shogun was also in better shape)
Coulda/woulda/shoulda
Dismissing your favourite fighters losses and calling other people ‘blind’ might not be the best idea.
Shogun lost a close decision! Everyone get crazy!
So what you're telling me is
You’d like to ignore the fact that Shogun was unable to train properly, came in with cardio problems and jump straight to the conclusion that Forrest Griffin is a more talented, more technically skilled fighter than Shogun Rua; is that what you’re trying to say? Cause that sounds like garbage to me :)

Nope
But at the same time you can’t dismiss losses like that, because you like a fighter or someone beat the odds.
Pulver beat Penn the first time, was he the better more technical fighter? No.
Does that mean you dismiss his win versus BJ?
Serra beat GSP, is Serra the better fighter? Not even close, but he still beat him, you cant pretend like he didn’t, even with GSP’s problems coming into that fight.
Paulo Thaigo got a lucky shot against Koshcheck after he was losing a lopsided fight. Does that mean you just pretend it didn’t happen?
Shogun also looked the same in the Coleman fight and nearly lost that, if he had such issues he shouldn’t have been fighting. He fought two miserable fights back to back where he looked atrocious.
Regardless of the fighter, I hate fans making excuses for all their loses.
Shogun lost a close decision! Everyone get crazy!
Being out of shape because your ACL is torn and the surgery date is set before the fight
is different than being out of shape because you don’t train. Forrest got lucky as hell and will never taste success again.
Gimme 1 round!
by ItBurnzWhenIP on Apr 5, 2010 6:46 PM EDT up reply actions
Oh
Okay, so Torn ACL for Forest.
Got screwed by the judges on Lyoto
Renato Sobral was probably on Steroids right?
What was his excuse for how he looked against Coleman?
I have a spreadsheet to keep track of these, but it’s at work.
Do we have a pre-made excuse in case he loses to Lyoto again? I’d like to update my spreadsheet my head of time; get my ducks in a row.
Shogun lost a close decision! Everyone get crazy!
I hate when they write off Forrest
If Shogun wasnt ready he shouldnt have fought. And he did fight competetively for a while then Gassed. Then got submitted, actually flattened out then submitted. Then he looked a wreck vs Coleman. Wasnt he supposed to get better after shaking off the ring rust? He looked just as bad vs Coleman.
by AintNoSunshine on Apr 5, 2010 9:03 PM EDT up reply actions
And then looked awesome against Machida
Who’d never even lost a round until that fight; no one’s saying Forrest didn’t win the fight, but am I all the sudden gonna jump on the wagon and say Forrest is a more talented, better fighter than Shogun just cause he caught him at a good time? HELL NO.

lmao "I was moving pretty well, constantly applying pressure"
you looked shit in fight Gommi you got picked to pieces then chocked out
agreed
Though I noticed that K-Flo didn’t take him down til right after Gomi landed a big left hook to his dome.
But It took him 3 rounds to land that one big shot.
I was really hoping for Gomi win, but I didn’t expect one.
Shogun lost a close decision! Everyone get crazy!
Khoas of however u spell it that bottom part is alittle off ufc is top dog. Than strikeforce/dream than sengoku…I really like the fact that strikeforce n dream teamed up to. So don’t call me a UFC nut hugger…just the better fighters are in the UFC
And to the post I like that he didn’t make an excuse. I wish more fighters would be like this… Bisbing comes to mind

I doubt the UFC
would risk a back to back loss for either guy.

Gomi Didnt Look "Horrible"
Yes he was completely beaten by kenny. Kenny is also the best LW behind BJ Penn and realistically Gomi shouldnt have even fought Kenny. I know he wanted the toughest fight blah blah blah but now its time for Gomi to rebuild. I would love to see Gomi vs Clay Guida.
ANS - I disagree. He looked awful. He did not change strategies or adjust his movement to avoid those jabs. What did you see?

I Saw a B Level Fighter
Go into his Octagon Debut with the consensus number 2 LW in the UFC. Gomi did look outclassed and outmatched and his cardio didnt look great. So that all sounds like I am aggreeing with you but I think Kenny would make anyone look that way in that circumstance. As much as I hate it because I am not a huge Kenny fan he is a perfect number two to keep any one from challenging BJ that shouldnt be. Dont know how Edgar slipped that crack.

So, ANS - in your opinion, Gomi was an overrated guy from the get-go? My knowledge of Asian fighters is poor.

Kenny number 2?
Yeah all kenny seems to do is finish fights, but i dont consider him number 2. He has beat some good guys but no one really exceptional. J-Lo, Heurta, Clay, Big Daddy, they r good legitimate ufc fighters but nowhere near the top 5 level. Sherk handled him BJ handled him. Diego would have taken him out if he stayed at 55. I think edgar, tyson griffin would even take him out. Kenny is a top 5-10 ranked fighter.
Kenny
is easily the UFC Number 2 LW. You cant really argue it since he beats everyone but the champ (Number 1). And OJR, yes i do believe that Gomi was mostly hype coming into the UFC and the same way people believed Diego had anything for BJ the reality was Gomi used to be a world beater and top 10 LW. But those days are over. I actually was one of many who got caught in Gomi’s hype.

Kenny vs Maynard
Should be this summer.
by AintNoSunshine on Apr 5, 2010 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions
Beat everyone?
Last I checked he lost to Sherk, I also dont remember him beating edgar, griffin, maynard, sanchez(I know he moved back up but have to add him). he beat Big daddy, how has his carrer turned out oh yeah he is a b-level fighter. Lauzon he beat, he is a b-level fighter, he beat heurta who turns out is a b level fighter despite all the early hype. Gomi as u helo my case by saying he is overated.
I am knocking Kenny
But u know what i think kenny is a bad matchup for maynard though. I think kenny will actually dominate Gray.
I actually Think
Maynard can implement the Sherk game plan. And could win in a 3 round fight.

Lost to Sherk The "Champ" as I Mentioned Above
He did beat Huerta (Highly Touted Prospect) Lauzon (was a Highly touted prospect) Stevenson (former champion contender)… He cant fight everyone before a title shot. I do agree he should have fought one of Maynard, Griffin and Edgar but Diego was fast tracked so thats not Kennys fault. To say Kenny isnt the number 2 LW in the UFC is just crazy.
by AintNoSunshine on Apr 5, 2010 5:08 PM EDT up reply actions
We will agree to disagree
I just look at who has huerta, lauzon and steveson beat in their career? They were all hyped by the UFC. J-lo and big daddy because they were on tuf. Heurta cause he had an undefeated record even though he didnt really beat anyone of importance. On paper Kenflo is 2, but to me he is not the 2nd best fighter at 55. Only time will tell when he does end up fighting the guys we just mentioned maynard, griffin, edgar etc.
Thats a Fair Statement
You Ended With. And your right about something else also. The hyping part, alot of fighters are made to appear better because of hype but Joe Daddy is a very decorated and accomplished MMAer. As is Huerta. And Lauzon is VERY young and I am sure will achieve bigger and better things.

j-lo
I think lauzon has a lot of potential. He will never reach that potential until he drops the j-lo nickname. I am partially joking but not entirely. Love the S.king quote OJR.
Thanks, man. I think Lauzon is the future once he sharpens his stand up.

Tyson Griffin
WHy is it that he gets no love? He is only 25, only has 2 losses. One to Sherk which many people believe he won. Another to Edgar which was one my favorite fights of all time and it was a close fight. He took out the WEC great Faber. Beat just as many top fighters as anyone else at 55. Is it only because he doesnt finish fights? Finish or not, every fight is exciting.
Lauzon VS Griffin
That would be one helluva fight. Just imagine all the scrambles that would happen in that fight.
Disagree as well
Gomi did no adjusting whatsoever. He just threw sloppy punches all night, got killed with a straight jab. Had no ground game at all. I am a mma fan who never really got to watch gomi fight in pride and I was not impressed at all.
Guida would take him down n hold him there n possibly pull out a sub…guida is a bad matchup

Dana
This fight was supposed to be lopsided, that’s how Dana wanted it.
If Gomi was to move to the states, work with Jackson or ATT for 1 year, he’d cut through Kenflo like butter.
