Cheick Kongo: Back injury may delay possible Roy Nelson fight

Mma_g_congo11_576_medium

Props: Riddum.com

Quoteworthy:

"I have to be able to start my preparation - the thing I haven't done yet. I am still injured. I don't think it would happen at UFC 116. Maybe later but not then. I didn't get any word from the UFC [on Nelson]. I have my manager Anthony who's working on that and as of today, I'm just actively recovering and nothing else."

UFC heavyweight striker Cheick Kongo talks about his slow recovery from a back injury suffered in his fight against Paul "The Headhunter" Buentello at UFC on Versus last March. The Parisian is waiting on word from his doctors on whether or not he needs surgery to correct the lingering problem -- which would pretty much put the kibosh on his rumored UFC 116 fight against Roy Nelson. Anyone else think this may be an opportunity to pair "Big Country" up with Frank Mir for a rematch from Grapplers Quest?

Nelson would beat the crap out of Mir!

I really hope they book that fight because Roy would be an underdog, and would beat Mir so it would be a profitable fight for me!

Oh, yes, Meg, yes-yes yes, everything was going swimmingly for you until this. Yes, yes, THIS is the thing that will ruin your reputation, not your years of grotesque appearance, or your awkward social graces, or that Felix Ungerish way you clear your sinuses, no no no, it's THIS. Do you hear yourself talk? I might kill you tonight.

Slowly being a Roy fan

He is pretty funny and has a slight Forrest-esqe quality to his humor. I was really expecting him to use more of his ground game against Struve and he shocked the hell out of me. Hopefully Kongo is good to go or if he’s out Mir is in his right mind, as much as Mir can be, to take on Nelson.

I say scratch that Pat Barry vs Cro Cop match up thats scheduled for 115

And do the cro cop vs rothwell fight for 115 it was supposed to happen at 110. and have Pat Barry vs Roy Nelson for 116

by Ponch-Hoe on Apr 30, 2010 1:41 AM EDT reply actions

I think Roy deserves someone better than Pat

There would be nothing awesome about it.

Mir would be knocked out in the first round. Nelson would not be a waliking punch bag like Nog or stand there with his hands down like Kongo did. Those victories made a lot of you think Mir is better than what he actually is. It would definately not be an awesome fight, but I wouldn’t mind seeing Mir get knocked out in the first round again. Mir will never get another chance at a title shot.

by Ade on Apr 30, 2010 7:10 AM EDT up reply actions

i dont even like mir

but itd be a better fight than kongo vs nelson…

all nelson needs to do against kongo is take him down and thats it. with mir at least mir has the BJJ skills so if he were to be taken down, at least there’d be some form of movement and possibility of subbing him.

Listen to Ade people,

the key to beating Mir = just land a half decent punch on his face, his wheels will just come flying off.

Mir is the best match-up and they've got history...

Nelson thrashed Mir 13-2 in a grappling competition so we know he has the better ground game – on the feet I’d say it’s about 50/50 between them. The problem for Dana is that if Mir loses where does he go from there? If Nelson wins he has to be taken seriously as a real contender in the UFC. It’s a risk that Dana doesn’t like so I can see Nelson getting mid-table guys for a while yet…

by Jimrod on Apr 30, 2010 4:36 AM EDT reply actions

Mir would kill nelson now

Thats why we need to see this fight, lots of ppl disagree on it.

by mma guru on Apr 30, 2010 4:54 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm not so sure that all the bulk has helped Mir...

He’s not shown any ground game at all in his last two losses and that used to be his strength – He KO’d Kongo and Nog so he has power but I think he’s a bit slow for a “smaller” heavyweight like Nelson, it’s a very even match-up in my eyes but I just think Nelson is the sharper fighter at present.

by Jimrod on Apr 30, 2010 6:06 AM EDT up reply actions

he subbed kongo btw

and i dont think the bulking up has helped him, i agree on that. but to be fair he hasnt had a chance to showcase much becasue both fights ended so quickly

HE'S FAKING IT CAUSE HE'S AFRAID OF GETTING KO'D

Kongo saw this footage and the fear gripped him to his very soul; he doesn’t fear the KO, just the consequences of being KO’d by a fat short white man.
