WEC 48: "Aldo vs Faber" from the Arco Arena in Sacramento, California, has officially wrapped, which means that it’s time for those select fighters who went above and beyond in their respective fights to get a little extra grease for their efforts.
To the tune of $65,000 each -- a record high for the promotion.
The WEC dished out its standard post-fight monetary bonuses to four out of the 22 fighters on the promotion's first-ever pay-per-view card. And it may not surprise you which combatants are leaving "River City" with a little extra green.
In addition to their base salaries, the WEC awarded featherweight competitors Leonard Garcia and Chan Sung Jung "Fight of the Night" for their thrilling, back-and-forth war of attrition.
"The Korean Zombie" went toe-to-toe with the "Bad Boy" in a contest that will certainly rank as one of the best fights in recent memory. Garcia squeaked past Jung to earn the split decision nod, but the fans were clearly the real winners here.
Also representing the 145-pound weight class was former Ultimate Fighter finalist Manny Gamburyan. Aside from winning his third straight fight under the WEC banner, Gamburyan dropped a "Manvil" on former division champion Mike Brown (and the oddsmakers who made him a +450 underdog) to earn "Knockout of the Night."
Could he be next in line for Jose Aldo?
In what was supposed to be a repeat of their WEC 43 slugfest, Ben Henderson instead made quick work of Donald Cerrone, tapping the "Cowboy" with ease via first round guillotine choke. His "Submission of the Night" not only garnered him a fat slice of cheddar, but also recognition as one of the world's top lightweight fighters.
Here are the special fight bonuses for WEC 48:
Fight of the Night — Leonard Garcia vs. Chan Sung Jung
Knockout of the Night — Manny Gamburyan
Submission of the Night — Ben Henderson
Again, each fighter received $65,000 extra for their performances in addition to their respective base salaries, which we will pass along as soon as possible.
