Dana White: We have a three-year plan for the WEC that I believe in

Dana-white_medium

Props: Las Vegas Sun

Quoteworthy:

"The hardest part of all this is just figuring it out and believe it or not, I have a plan for this whole thing. What I'm doing today is based on my idea that all television is going to the Internet. That's what I believe and I've believed it for a long time. One thing I can say is, whether you agree or disagree with the decisions I've made, every year we've taken this thing to another level. What we're going to do over the next three years is pretty (expletive) cool."

UFC president, and at least for the time being WEC promoter, Dana White shares his thoughts on the whole UFC/WEC merger discussion. While everyone in the MMA community has noticed and questioned the lack of WEC branding for this event, effectively titled "Aldo vs. Faber," White has stood behind his reasoning for the numerous perceived strategic moves in the lead up to the first of its kind pay-per-view event. Anybody out there care to channel their inner Miss Cleo and predict what Dana has in store for the always entertaining WEC promotion? Let's hear it, Maniacs.

lol what poll?

I created one yesterday, 75% of people aren’t buying this wec event, but ur an HNNET douchebag so ur opinion means zero!

by kevjack115 on Apr 23, 2010 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I never took a poll on it, but

I don’t see this ppv doing well at all. Yeah, I would like to see the fights, but I am already paying every month to watch the UFC. I can’t afford to hand over Zuffa anymore of my money.

by naturalshadow on Apr 24, 2010 8:04 AM EDT up reply actions

Im not interested in the WEC really. Don’t watch there previews and rarely there events. So nothing he can do will get me intrested. murge it with the UFC and make 1 more weight division. Why do the UFC need another brand i don’t get it.

I was a fool to think Bisping had any chance against the Axe Murderer, and even more foolish to bet agaisnt the great Puck Head.

i like wec just wish both promotions had every weight class

then wec could be a farm system for ufc, kinda like SF challengers and minor league baseball..

What's this "internet" I've been hearing so much about

Fedor invented a language that incorporates Sambo and Kimuras.

So next time FEDOR is kicking your ass, don't be offended or hurt, he may be just trying to tell you he likes your hat.

I don't know either.

But Mr. White tells us that my picture box is going to it.

you only have a picture box? I have recently purchased a moving picture box

More and more people are watching TV via the internet. Now it’s just a matter of time before some sort of pay schedule is figured. Hulu just announced a trial pay scale for some of their content. The devices we have to deliver HD quality broadcasts streamed over the internet to our tv’s are growing in number and quality. Here’s my guess: The UFC will create a channel where you can either have a yearly subscription and get all the UFC content you desire or pay ala carte for individual cards. This channel will be offered on cable/satellite, and the internet via your Tivo, Roku, Xbox, iTunes, etc. This will be a profound shift into a different kind of ppv model. The UFC will in effect become their own distributor and get to keep much more of the ppv price.

There’s my guess……any thoughts?

good thought

but Dana White can’t be the 1st guy to think of this!

by kevjack115 on Apr 23, 2010 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

You're probably right...

…I’m sure he’s heard this from industry execs. He may just be the first one with enough balls to do it.

actually kinda cool to read this quote

Dana was talking to me about his thoughts on TV going to the internet when i had lunch with him back in march.

Maybe not

But, the UFC may be the first sports brand/model that has the ability to take advantage of the concept. This would not work so well with the other major sports, but with the UFC’s lionshare of the MMA world, It just might work. I’d pay for it. For cryin out loud, God knows I’m paying a fortune in these PPV’s. Streamline this junk for me already.

sounds like an idea to me man, thats actually a pretty good hypothesis lol

even if thats not their plan, that’s not a bad idea in my opinion. Especially the option to purchase them al la carte or all at once. Pretty good damn post, if you ask me lol

by Blunt n' Beer on Apr 23, 2010 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Didn’t AOL and Time Warner try this already???

by deuce 4 on Apr 23, 2010 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm no techy

But isn’t ufc.com on demand essentially TV online but not in real time? It’s a paid for service to watch videos. The key is to get it to stream through in real time with no buffering or degradation in quality.

by Dugout on Apr 23, 2010 2:42 PM EDT reply actions

Yep.

The plan is probably 3 years down the road because it will probably take that long before a majority of houses have that HD ready portal. I would expect they would try this out on smaller events before a PPV.

by Reciprocity on Apr 23, 2010 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I believe what Dana is talking about once enough peaple would buy the PPV on the internet via computer over cable PPV

They would be able to sell the PPV for less and make more money, but right now there isn’t enough peaple that use the computer with the TV to justify usiing the ccomputer . I’m not 100 positive but I think the UFC has to go through another company to have PPV on TV were they don’t if they have it on the internet?

ill tell you why the UFC needs another brand

because thats where they test and build up the fighters they think can make it in the UFC but are not 100% sure. You cannot tell me that a Brian stann is anything near the top level competition in the UFC. Look what happened to him. Look at carlos condit. Look at Steve Cantwell. All these guys are good enough to be in the UFC but are not anywhere near top tier fighters. So the WEC is a perfect place to keep them. Faber at lightweight would get smoked by a lot of duded in the UFC.

by Mir on Apr 23, 2010 3:58 PM EDT reply actions

yeah but

there’s only one division that overlaps at this point and they’re talking about merging that division (lightweight) with the ufc once they add lower weight classes. so to say that the wec is the ufc’s minor league at this point isnt really accurate. and faber is not a lightweight which is why he would get smoked.
