Dana White: 'Jake Shields is definitely going to leave Strikeforce -- and he's definitely coming to the UFC'

Shields-gsp-white_medium

Props: AHN.com

Quoteworthy:

"Jake Shields is definitely going to leave Strikeforce, and he's definitely coming to the UFC. First of all, they put all of their eggs in the Dan Henderson basket. They went out and acquired him and thought he was worth a lot more money than we were willing to pay him. They went out and paid him more money than they can afford to. They never respected Jake Shields, who is their champion. They didn't even have him in their commercials for the fight. Then the fight happens and Jake Shields wins. They were like, 'Oh my God. He won. What do we do?' I think they sent (Miller) in there to challenge him, so that if Jake leaves, it looks like he doesn't want to fight Miller. That‘s not the way you do it. You let the winner speak, then you ask him at the end about whether he‘s willing to fight Miller. But that's them. They're a Podunk, unknown, small-time organization. There shouldn‘t have been that many guys in the cage in the first place!"

UFC President Dana White is definitely using the word "definitely" again, this time in predicting the definite future home of Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Jake Shields. The grappling wizard gave UFC import Dan Henderson a rude awakening at last Saturday's "Nashville" event to retain his title and dramatically increase his market value. The San Jose-based fight promotion is running out of time to exercise their remaining fight option and could be looking at a hefty price tag to re-sign him and keep him out of the UFC. Definitely.

He never stated what weight class but I'm assuming WW

I didn’t see to many cemmercials period besides the ones they aired on here and Dana is right they never really had Shields involved. Infact the last comment I heard Coker state was talking about what a great addition Dan was and that Dan wanted to first fight for the MW belt then the the LHW and then the HW belt. That has all changed now and I wonder how Hendo feels about this or is he happy with his wage?

Shields at MW gets killed in the UFC.

GSP vs Shields on TUF 12. Book it.

God it will be the most boring and dull TUF ever.

GSP despite his talents and dominance has no personality and shields is also somethign special in terms of excitment.

hey if thats what it takes to get them to fight... Let's do it

I don’t watch TUF, just the fights in the last 10-20 minutes if I’m around or next day online. So I don’t care about the show being boring, to me it’s just reality garbage just like any other show, except for the fights

This week's episode

was a shitty fight, and a great fight. Yager scared the piss outta that kid and he quit. The other fight was awesome while it lasted. I hated the way it ended up, but there was crazy action in that round. I can’t remember seeing a dude get dumped on his head like that, i thought he was paralyzed. Not only did he survive, but he withstood the beating and started to turn it around. really a shame the way it ended, that had potential to be an incredible fight. This season seems to be much better all around……

It's amazing that Fedor didn't get injured after that one

Even more amazing that he won a minute later with an armbar. Big Nog is a freak as well, Bob Sapp slammed him on his head and somehow Nog recovered and got the submission win.

Hendo can't make weight anymore at 185 and it showed.

Imagine Shields against a good freestyle wrestler like Sonnen, let alone Andy.

Shields at WW is legitimate top 5. He would be barely top 10 at MW with those pattycake strikes. Maybe not killed, but not a contender for long.

i say give shields jake rosholt, see how he does against a real in shape wrestler, he’s GOOD but he is vastly overrated, anyone that can sprawl is going to knock his ass out i dont see him beating hendricks at WW

there is a lot of guys he would beat too though, just not the guys with great sprawls, i see him beating alves though and hardy, he already beat semtex, possibly beating kampman but the hitman could sprawl on him maybe, and he already has a win over condit

I don’t think giving Shields the hardest possible matchup to make him look bad is “the right track.” I think he’s earned his shot at GSP, or if not he should at least fight someone at the top of the division rather than someone who stylistically is very hard for him.

He'd beat Rosholt anyway, Jake's namesake has horrible submission defence

Shields has earnt his spot at the top of the WW and MW divisions, he deserves to fight for the title or at least a top contender. If Gomi can lose a bunch of fights in Sengoku then walk into a top contender’s fight with Ken-Flo then Jake deserves a fight with the Fitch-Alves winner at least.

Good news

Shields was marginalized badly by SF promos and commentators. As a self-respect issue, leaving the $ aside, it’s not a stretch that he would jump ship.
I would like to see how Shields fares in the WW picture in the UFC. I am not sure if GSP would be his first fight in, but do you think they would even have him fight Fitch? That fight could be billed as Ambien in the Cage. Does anyone have a good match for Shields first fight?

I’m leaning towards tune up fight now. Maybe Carlos Condit or Martin Kampmann would make for an exciting fight. They both have solid ground game and much better striking. I think either would be a good test for Shields to build to a contender match against Alves, Thiago or Fitch.

He's already beaten Condit

And I doubt that he’d join the UFC if his next fight was going to be a tune-up one, Jake wants to fight the best and he is set to make huge money at whatever promotion he chooses to join. He already is a champion, no way will he drop back to 170 to beat guys outside of the top 10 especially if he’s already beaten them. I say throw Jake right to the wolves, he thrives under pressure and doesn’t exactly need time to transition fighting in a cage or on a major card.
