An interesting lightweight battle between Takanori Gomi and Joe Stevenson is in the works for a 155-pound scrap at UFC on Versus 2. The card is set to go down on August 1 from Energy Solutions Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah.
MMAmania.com recently confirmed the match up with a source close to the situation.
Both fighters are coming off unimpressive showings resulting in defeat. Gomi's much-celebrated debut with the UFC at UFC Fight Night 21: "Florian vs. Gomi" left a lot to be desired as the former Pride FC champion was thoroughly outworked and outskilled before succumbing to a rear-naked choke in the third round.
"The Fireball Kid" had gone just 2-2 over the last two years prior to the Florian fight while mainly competing for Sengoku, effectively dimming the shine of what has been a stellar career. A loss against "Joe Daddy" could very well indeed spell the end for Gomi as a competitive top-tier lightweight fighter.
Stevenson is coming off a loss to fast-rising prospect George Sotiropoulos at UFC 110: "Nogueira vs. Velasquez." Known for his high-quality grappling skills, Joe was dominated by the Australian in every capacity, including on the ground en route to dropping a one-sided unanimous decision.
Before that bout "Joe Daddy" looked to have righted the ship reeling off two consecutive wins over Nate Diaz at The Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale and Spencer Fisher at UFC 104: "Machida vs. Shogun" after dropping back-to-back contests to Kenny Florian at UFC 91: "Couture vs. Lesnar" and Diego Sanchez in the main event of UFC 95.
The loser of this fight will undoubtedly have a steep hill to climb in order to get back into contention in the UFC's deep lightweight roster.
