UFC Quick Quote: Anderson Silva wanted to show Demian Maia he's not champion by mere coincidence

Anderson_silva_maia_112_medium

"I tried to make him felt himself frustrated. There was a moment I wound up facing the fight as a brawl and spoke things like ‘Didn’t you tell that a spider has eight legs and you would pull one?' Come on, get up playboy’. Yes, I called him playboy. Mike Tyson also made provocations and always was criticized. If there was all of that repercussion and I had lost the fight, it would be worse but I came back home with the belt without a scratch, pinch, nothing. The Spider did what he does as usual: I went out there and won. I don’t say I lost the control. From my heart, I wouldn’t do that again. I tried to show the people and chiefly Demian that I’m not there by chance. I didn’t get to the top by mere coincidence. I’m four times world champion”.

Anderson Silva spoke to Brazilian newspaper O Globo and also took a part yesterday at the entertaining program Domingão do Faustão, also from Brazil, that his attitude was part of a game plan to make the contender Demian Maia lose his cool during the UFC 112 main event in Abu Dhabi. The middleweight champion has faced off criticism from the mixed martial arts specialized media and disappointed fans who expect to watch the abilities of the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world instead of scenes and verbal attacks. But bear with him, Anderson recognizes he exaggerated along the bout and explained that was the way he figured out to get away from pressure. After all the threads and discussions over the UFC 112, has your opinion on Anderson Silva changed anyway? Do you still think the Spider is one of the best fighters on earth or his behavior and bad attitudes aren’t acceptable for a champion and you don’t consider him as incredible as before? Video of his appearance after the jump.

He acted like a clown yes but he fought by the rules

He took enough heat already for his actions and for one am willing to put this fight behind me as one of his handfull of not so great fights as well as his first real bad sportsmanship. For all the great fights Silva has been in and class he has shown he deserves the benifit of the doubt. Remember Roy Jones is one of his idles and when you try to act like someone your not thats when you will look like a jerk and i think thats how he has been trying to act in his latest fights, this last one going way overboard.

I don't know

but I like the guy doing the interview. Seems to just not pussy foot around and says what he thinks is good and kind of calls Anderson out on flip flopping. Calls him smart for apologizing right away then says but you changed your word. So, did he call Anderson not smart for changing his word?

this getting annoying

he has made his 30th announcement about his performance, Machida and roughly 85% think shogun won but, Machida didnt say anything other then he thought he won and let it go

Tyson later in his career was a little boring, and biting ears is much worse than dancing LOL

Ali didn’t always KO his oppoentns in his prime, a KO is only part of the fight as the best fighter Fedor has faced today NOG and CC he couldn’t KO either but NOG has been KO by two fighters as of late does that make them better than Fedor because they finished someone Fedor couldn’t?

Look, I know it’s not an obligation to knock out the opponents to show your superiority but it’s what the fans expect from guys like Tyson and Anderson, right?
Yep, Tyson upset many people in his last fights.

Idk

I’d much rather see a good fight And a guy full of aggression get frustrated and bite someones ear off than a guy who could KO another guy just dance around with him. I hate the fact that Anderson says he was disrespected and wanted to beat Mia up to me if someone disrespects you KO them in the opening secs of the first round it’s shows they had no reason to talk shit and it’s wasn’t they’re place to b in the ring with u.. Now when u let the fight go to a 5 rd decision well u lose respect and let the other guy earn some that’s just my thought

Agreed. Perspective.
Not to mention that Tyson’s opponents were not necessarily all top guys or really credible opponents. Tyson’s larger than life hype feeds more into his legacy than his actual fights.

fedor goes in and finishes guys. you want to have a legacy? you gotta live up to the work that other guys are accomplishing when it counts: in big fights with a lot of people watching. that’s where champions shine.
arlovski and rogers? in trouble or not, Fedor still guts it out and wins by brutal/unequivocal stoppage. Period.

Silva has flopped the 3x he defended his strap. he doesn’t merit having it around his waist. i could care less if i ever see him fight again.

Silva flopped 3x defending the title, HOW so?
  • You mean to tell me that he flopped against Patrick Cote, an opponent who suffered a major injury in the beginning of their 3rd round championship fight? What, Silva didn’t KO Cote 1-2-3, a fighter who has never been knocked out in his entire career?
  • Silva flopped against Leites? A fighter who ran, avoided the stand up and butt scooted through several rounds?

by VeeisAnimated on Apr 19, 2010 10:48 AM EDT up reply actions

Up to the point Cote injured himself

Silva refused to engage. He seems to do this when he feels that the challenger didn’t legitimately earn his chance or something.

by Pantherhare on Apr 19, 2010 10:57 AM EDT up reply actions

  • During the FIRST round, Silva circles his opponent and tries to find his range, that’s his regular modus operandi. That’s not refusing to engage. His game his very similar to Machida’s game. Test the distance, gauge your opponent before you strike.
  • It’s not like Cote cared to CHALLENGE the champion in the 1st like Frankie Edgar CHALLENGED BJ Penn. Cote, like Edgar, has ONLY five 5-minute rounds stop or convince the judges that he should be champion. What did he do?
  • What happened in the 2nd round? Was their action? Did Silva make contact? Did Cote attempt a take down? Did Silva change levels on him and take him down?
  • Do you recall Silva going straight to the center in the 3rd round?

What is all this refuse to engage stuff? Just because fans did not get there neatly packaged-(T)KO highlight reel finish doesn’t mean that Silva was refusing to engage.
Yes, Silva did refuse to engage against Maia but I don’t recall Cote running after Silva, setting the pace or mounting any significant offense.

I know the Cote and Leites fights were horrible championship fight but why does blame fall squarely on Silva’s shoulders?

"There's nothing cool about taking punishment" - Floyd Mayweather Jr.

by VeeisAnimated on Apr 19, 2010 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Can't really blame anyone for the Cote fight

It was a freak accident, tho if I was to put blame on someone it’d be Cote for taking the fight knowing he’s injured. Leites had no heart, fought a very cowardly fight but I felt Silva could’ve finished him if he’d poured it on a bit. Same with Maia, if Silva had gone after him he could’ve finished or at least showed the crowd that he was TRYING to finish it. I think that’s what the main complaint is; there was no effort in rds 4 – 5 on Silva’s part to finish at all. If he’d just thrown a couple combinations; maybe some leg kicks, anything to show the crowd he was at least trying to fight he wouldn’t be getting this. It was like he won 3 rds on points then just gave up fighting and was waiting on the clock to expire.

Exactly.

Yes, but yet Dana White and a number of bloggers and fans continue to claim that this is Silva’s 3rd time doing this. That doesn’t make sense or reflect what occurred.

Silva did what he does for 3 rounds and refused to engage in the 4th and 5th rounds against Maia. As you simply put, Cote’s fight was a freak accident and Leites had no heart.

The Maia fight was ugly but its not like we didn’t know what would happen when Silva faced an elite BJJ practitioner. We all remembered what happened when they matched up Silva against a bigger fighter that will stand up and fight in UFC 101. The backlash is a little bit overblown just like the criticism of GSP against Fitch, Alves and Hardy.

by VeeisAnimated on Apr 19, 2010 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Well this is the 3rd time he's been 1/2 of a boring main event

Is it all his fault?? Not at all, but he’s not blameless either. GSP might have been in a few fights that aren’t all that entertaining (Though I disagree on the Fitch fight, I thought that was entertaining, GSP threw everything but the kitchen sink at Fitch trying to put him away.) but Georges has always tried to finish. No question when you see his fights he’s going for the finish; lookin for subs, lookin to GnP; he’s got an active ground game. All I know is a ref has never stopped Georges, stood him up and told him he was going to deduct a point for inactivity.

by O damn he got caught on Apr 19, 2010 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m just saying the claims that Anderson Silva refuses to fight or finish his opponents doesn’t reflect what occurred in the Octagon WITH the exception of Silva vs. Maia.

Out of 11 consecutive UFC record-breaking victories, he failed to stop 3 opponents. Note, the Cote fight is considered a stoppage. Four of those stoppages was against former champions, Henderson, Franklin, Marquardt and Griffin.

Whether GSP fights are entertaining is subjective. Yeah, he wasn’t nearly deducted a point or booed in a championship fight. GSP vs. Fitch was Fight of the Year candidate in my opinion.

But is this really about a GSP vs. Silva comparison? No, not at all.

by VeeisAnimated on Apr 19, 2010 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Wasn't trying to get into a GSP vs A. Silva debate

Was just comparing two champions, both have recently been in some not so exciting fights; but the difference is Georges is forgiven because you can tell during the fight that he’s at least TRYING to finish it. Silva with Leites and especially with Maia seemed disinterested and content to ride out the decision.

I’ve been thinking that for a while but then I get sidetracked by the fact that he went to 205 and demolished that division between lack luster performances at 185. Its confusing. I think its a bit of the hype getting to his head and boredom.

What?

Drop the fucking ebonics bullshit.

Fedor is the best fighter ever and GSP is behind him at #2, Silva is third at best.

Best Pound for Pound

To me you have to clarify style:

Silva appears to be the best at alluding punches and applying ko strikes. He and Fedor seem to have the ability to find an opponents timing and anticipate strikes.

GSP is the best method fighter. He has a combination of size, great endurance and quickness that allow him to wear opponents down to eventually apply his will.

Fedor is best at finding different ways at beating his opponents. His ability to take punishment allows him to be in conversations

Who is Sonnen?

Let me remind you, he completely owned Nate Marquardt, a fighter who many were screaming to get a second title shot and who also thought would be good competition for Silva. I tend to judge a fighter by there last performance, and Sonnen proved himself against someone many thought he had no chance of beating. There is no way Silva is going to piss around against him, he cannot afford to. Nate is a powerful guy , I doubt Silva is any stronger and he looked useles against Sonnen. He may not have the stand up, but all he needs to is be able to eat a few to get the takedown. and getting a submission while getting elbowed and punched in the face, is a lot easier said than done.

Ade, let me remind you that Anderson has already overwhelmed Nate Marquardt and will do again when Nathan gets his chance again.
Sonnen fought his best versus Marquardt but please don’t compare him and Silva.
