Some perspective from a moderate MMA fan -
First of all, I for one like that CBS is showing these fights on regular TV. MMA is definitely a better product that boxing & by having events like this on regular TV or UFC on Spike, it gives them a chance to reach out to disenchanted boxing fans or curious onlookers. Heck, even Dana is trying to push for MMA as an Olympic event! The only downside to MMA in terms of watching is that more often than boxing, it is either over in the first round or it goes the distance, which sometimes can make watching by the casual fan more painful that the fight itself. Either way, more fights on TV is great!
Next, lest we push the panic button, every sport has had one of these freak occurances in the the recent past. Detroit Pistons, High School sports, every other Miami Hurricane football season...Hell, did anyone see the NCAA squash fiasco on ESPN highlights last month? SQUASH??
Third, UFC people who hate Strikeforce probably still hate Strikeforce regardless of the post-fight. People who like Strikeforce for some variety probably still like it. The newcomers are the ones probably most affected by what happened. While more veteran viewers probably sensed a set-up, someone curious to know about MMA now probably equates it to cage thugery. What happened last night was unexcusable. While I agree with some posters that the smell of conspiracy is definitely in the air for Strikeforce to hype a potential fight or add fire to a potential future UFC fighter, it should have been saved for a PPV or a Showtime fight not on public TV. At least there, some would argue they got more bang for their buck. Whoever got in the fight should be suspended and whatever Strikeforce official who let Mayhem in the cage should be suspended too!
Finally, I really hope Strikeforce is able to pull through all of this chaos from this weekend. Competition whether on-par or sub-par to the main attraction is good for any kind of business. Being able to see guys leave one company, go to another & improve, and then stay or leave to go back to the first is beneficial for everybody. Just ask Jake Shields in a few weeks if Strikeforce helped him make more money....

Good post
Just yesterday we saw the coward Garnett throw an elbow and run for the hills like a bitch. It was not good for MMA (hell the Diaz bros are horrible for mma) but everybody has their moments and there jackasses trying to ruin shit for the rest. Strikeforce gives fighters a lot of freedoms and it’s cool but, sometimes they need to put their foot down and realize the fighters will always have different organizations to go but their brand could be really damaged after an incident like last night.

"run for the hills like a bitch"
your joking right? the ref made him get out of there because it was right where the heats bench is
Detroit Red Wings = next Stanley Cup Champs. Howard for Vezna
LOL
That’s all you disagree with Gold? The basketball part? Is this NBAMania? Who cares about what a basketball player did, they are all pussies. Basketball hasn’t been exciting since the 80’s.
GSP(ESP) is the most predictable fighter in MMA.
Basketball players are total pussies.
They don’t try unless it’s in the playoffs and every time they get hurt they cry on the floor and leave in a wheel chair only to come back at the half.

King Mo vs Jon Jones anyone?
i agreed with what he said other then the garnett thing
Its just a opinion anid wasnt the one who brought up nba bud. Also I know NBA players are complete pussies that cant fight, ive seen enough basketball players throwing punches to know that they have no idea wtf they are doing . I dont even like basketball I just saw the highlight he was talking about and dissagree that he ran like a bitch.

Garnett has been known for being a bully so yes I'm serious.

I would link you a video of all the shit he's done but I can't from my phone.

If this was a set-up, it is going to go down as the worst set-up in history when it gets three of their champions (two, if the Shields-UFC rumors come to fruition) suspended.
I don’t buy the comparisons to other sports having their tiffs, because other sports aren’t still fighting to get regulated in several states in the US. The NBA had a fight last night too (luckily for MMA, as it has, apparently, pushed the fiasco last night all but under the carpet) but David Stern isn’t out trying to get basketball legalized in Maine or anything. While the media shitstorm may have been avoided, this will be used as ammunition in states like NY, and I would be quite surprised if it wasn’t the last straw, following three underwhelming fights for casuals, for CBS to decide to say “fuck it” on this whole MMA thing.

I've been saying they (SF) allow too many "cronies" into the ring anyways (Gina's dad, 15 man posse etc).
at least the UFC has a 3 corner man rule. Of course SF set this up (mayhem in ring) any publicity is good publicity
Exactly
There is no need for that amount of people in the cage after a fight, things are bound to get out of control. I was very dissapointed with the reaction especially nick and Nate but mayhem shouldn’t have been aloud to cut in and interupt the interview either. Am fine with another fighter coming into the cage after the interview to hype up the fight an a controlled manner ie gsp Hughes , rashad rampage, Brock carwin. I think strikeforce have to really learn from this and control things a little more.

I didn’t realize it was melendez who started it, I ha thought nick through the first punch. In any case all these guys should know better. I think mayhem is too much of a fool to realise exactly what he was doing not that that’s any excuse for him. None of them are blameless in this in my opinion. Gotta say tho sheilds was awesome tonight, just like I thought he would be, pity I also thought mousassi and aoki would be lol.
