Gilbert Melendez: It's jiu-jitsu vs. ground and pound on April 17

Aoki-melendez2_medium_medium

Props: Sherdog.com

Quoteworthy:

"I think it's nuts that the biggest star in Japan is coming over here to fight me. I'm prepared for every scenario and I'm going to prove I'm a true mixed martial artist. I think this is what’s going to separate me from the rest, the fact that I can go to the ground with Aoki and I can ground-and-pound him. Yeah, his jiu-jitsu poses threats, but I think my ground-and-pound does as well."

Undisputed Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez sets his sights on Japanese grappling phenom Shinya Aoki at this Saturday's "Nashville" event on CBS. Aoki is not the first DREAM competitor to try his luck stateside but is certainly hoping to make a better impression than the last two (Manhoef, Zaromskis). What happens when you pit the fury of "El Nino" against the submissions of "The Tobikan Judan?" We'll find out soon enough -- early predictions?

Aoki

by excruciating arm lock.

It's not a good sign when you find yourself that entertaining. :)

That being said, Gilbert is gonna stand with him, his boxing is mediocre but it’s still light-years ahead of any stand-up skills Aoki possesses.

i find him entertaining

So that’s a pretty good sign.. :P

If Aoki can get JZ to the ground, he can get Melendez down. This is going to be an interesting fight.

Yeah, looks like it.

That move looks dangerous the more I see it. He could have got Pellogrino’d lol. If JZ would’ve slammed him forward with his weight at the right time it would’ve been lights out for Aoki.

he had his wrists though and couldve pulled himself closer to jz's body...without double wrist control it coulda happened though

I see what you’re saying.

Curious about the line on this one. I think it’s gotta be close to even. I wanna see Aoki pull it off, but I think Melendez will grind him out.

Praying for Aoki to lose

I think he is over-rated and I hope Gilbert can stay out of a submission and expose him

Didn't you know he got beat up by a welterweight recently?

And that he lost to a guy once who he also destroyed twice?

I mean that’s the epitome of overrated.

Melendez's biggest win was....

kawajiri 4 yrs ago to get ranked. Since then the highest ranked fighter he’s beaten is Josh who is probly top 15. I would say Ishida is top 20.

Aoki has beaten 2 top 5 and 1 top 10 LW in the last year alone in Hansen, Alvarez and Hirota.

Melendez, TKO

Good enough wrestling/BJJ to not get taken down, pulled in to guard or submitted. Good enough standup to make Aoki pay everytime he gets close. Melendez can say what he wants in pre-fight hype but the fact is, he will do anything possible to NOT go to the ground.

Prediction: Rocks him on the feet and finishes a dazed & confused Aoki with GnP.

by Zlatan, My Hero on Apr 14, 2010 9:10 AM EDT reply actions

i dunno man

Aoki has pretty good wrestling and judo. I could see him tieing him up and submitting him on his feet also.

by Bill Maher on Apr 14, 2010 9:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Fair enough...

But i dont think he’s wrestling and judo is good enough to be able to hold Melendez down long enough to effiecienty go for subs. Of course, with an amazing BJJ/grappler like Aoki there’s always a chance of a sub in a scramble. But i dont see him getting on top of Melendez anytime during the fight and i dont see him catching Melendez from the bottom IF and only IF Melendez plays it safe , if/when he somehow lands in Aokis guard. (meaning, dont even go for the GnP, just working his way up/out).

Btw “tieing him up and submitting him on his feet also”. Now thats a BOLD statement lol Doesnt happen THAT often does it? Any other fighter and I would’ve called you crazy, buy you never know with that dude :)

by Zlatan, My Hero on Apr 14, 2010 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions

not really,

if they clinch, aoki has more than enough times just jumped on the guy. Either they fall to the ground or aoki just figure fours himself on top then tries for things. One of his cleanest arm breaks was a judo throw off of a kimura lock while in a body clinch, bust the arm at the elbow. I wonder if Sasahara told him to injure Gilbert?

by NNR (formerly NameNotRequired) on Apr 14, 2010 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I dont think you read the last part proper enough!

I wrote any OTHER fighter… Cause seriously, how often does standing subs accure generally in MMA? I think its funny that a guy predicts “standing sub” for a fight and is dead serious and you ACTUALLY have to consider it because its a STRONG possibility that it might happen. it was a sign of respect from my side regarding his exciting BJJ. I mean, how many OTHER fighters except Aoki do you go like… yeah guys, my prediction: He submits him on the feet! no “lol” or anything.

But i still go with Melendez TKO. Its a WHOLE different game when a guy with GOOD BJJ/Wrestling has as a gameplan to NOT grapple.

by Zlatan, My Hero on Apr 14, 2010 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm rooting for Aoki

Personally I always prefer watching an exciting BJJ practitioner than yet another boring wrestler perfectly implementing a lay-and-pray game plan…

Aoki by triangle.

Possibly flying.

Aoki by sub.

This quote proves to me that Aoki will win this by sub. Gilbert is an idiot if he’s willing to risk going to the ground w/ Aoki. GP vs. BJJ? Why would you even risk it, when Aoki’s BJJ is far superior to your GP. It would be smart for Gilbert to keep it standing!

by Brotherwolf on Apr 14, 2010 10:19 AM EDT reply actions

don’t take what fighters say literally. plan A is most likely to punish him on the feet while running from any clinch

For me...

i really hope Gilbert tears a new one in Aoki. For one, i cant stand Aoki, but the main reason i wnat Gil to win is becasue Aoki is seeing this as the best Japan has to offer vs the best the USA has to offer; and that, is way off for him to assume that. I know he has to say that cuz of the strikeforce/ dream deal, but if he wins, then will we be boasting that he beat the best USA lightweigt and that is not the case. I like Gilbert, but he is not the best, he is the number 4 lightweight for me behind Penn, Edgar and Florian as far as USA.

i really wouldnt put Gilbert in there as representing the USA as the “best lightweight” against Japans best. So please gilbert tear a new onto Aoki and send his bitch ass back to Japan…
