BJ’s trainer:

we had long talks about what he was going to do and he wanted to stay 155 to make his legacy in that weight division. We are now just waiting for Dana to give us the call for Frankie Edgar again… I was talking to BJ and we are looking for a straight automatic rematch. We don’t know when but we’d like it in Hawaii. There is no moving up right now. That is not in our plans BJ wanted to have another fight in 155 after Edgar before trying welterweight again. I just spoke to him and he has no plans to move up again. We want to fight Frankie again as soon as possible.

F Grey Maynard....

Maynard = most boring fighter in LW division.

BJ is still the best LW in the world hands down. One bad outing does not change that. I say give him the rematch. Or, give Florian a chance against Edgar, then let the winner face BJ.

hey dana promised to pay back the fans.....and putting gray in a title fight is the perfect hype and action we all want for the payback

dana says he owes the fans because of andy’s actions…well gray is our saviour…who doesnt want to see that wonderful guy in a main event title fight for 5 rounds?

maynard vs edgar headlining a ppv? i dont even think spike would put that on a free telecast cause i think manswers and 1000 ways to die would get better ratings..

i just hope that fight takes place in canada…please dont waste an american card with that garbage

Correct Cole

I found it funny how he was texting Joe Silva right after the fight saying he was ready to fight for the title. BJ deserves an immediate rematch. To me it is just like Machida/Rua. I like Edgar but I hope BJ punishes him bad next time. And I don’t fault Rudy V. for what he said in an earlier thread regarding BJ’s condition at the time of the fight. He was only stating the facts. Is he supposed to lie when somebody asks him about BJ’s condition prior to the bout and say he was feeling great and 100%?

Bet the farm on BJ.

Much better line for the rematch. Will BJ be the underdog since Edgie is #1 in the world now? Ha ha ha.

Kenny’s already had 2 title shots. I’d like to see Kenny vs. Maynard for the title shot. The only issue is that Kenny’s out with a staph.

in their fight, Forrest deserved the W. Frankie looked pretty good, but nothing that took away the belt that night. I can only hope for a quick rematch, w Florian going after Maynard maybe.

Most ppl had him winning?

Got any proof of that? It was a very close fight but I didn’t have him winning. That wasn’t the dominant BJ that fought Florian and Sanchez. That was the BJ that showed up for GSP. Lethargic (maybe due to sickness or injury). BJ will get another shot and deservedly so but I think Frankie should defend against someone else first. This WASN’T the Machida-Shogun decision.

by sudnvictory on Apr 13, 2010 1:41 PM EDT up reply actions

that's cuz ur an idiot

how can you even say that? Forrest only won the 2nd rd. And even if you give him a 10-8 in that rd, the rest of the fight is still all Rampage. He landed the much harder shots. Knocked Griffin down in the 1st, took him to the ground in the 4th and slammed him, and landed some brutal shots in the 5th. That was the worst decision I’ve seen in my life. Vera/Couture and Machida/Rua are close seconds.

i think one decisive factor with the shogun and edgar fights

is that they made the “invincible” champions look human. but edgar didn’t win, and i stand by that.
HOWEVER the Shogun/Machida and Page/Forrest fights are similar, because while i thought both forrest and shogun won, it was close enough were there was an argument for the other side. however, i thought the result was pretty clear.

Edgar vs Penn was too close.
and in that situation, the fight should go to the champ (penn). i thought he won anyways, and he fought a terrible fight.

Frankie lost to Gray Maynard, it’s not like he’s unbeatable. BJ has a better style and is more well rounded, not to mention his size compared to small guys like Edgar.

When did pudgy, slow and out of shape become a style?

so you are going to argue that Edgar is a better boxer or bjj practicioner?

once Edgar fought Maynard he lost, and according to me he lost to Penn. So i don’t know what you’re getting at.

Style is opinion, wins and losses are FACT.

I am going to argue that Edgar WON THE FIGHT. It is fact, and your backseat driving and conspiracy theories are not going to change that.

I agree that BJ’s “style” in the octagon is prettier, but once again he didn’t work hard, lost a fight and now has his sycophants making excuses for WHY he lost. I give two fucks about why he or anyone else lost.

THEY LOST. WORK FUCKING HARDER AND DON’T LOSE AGAIN. MAKE YOURSELF THE BEST YOU CAN BE. IF THE BEST YOU CAN BE IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH THEN HOLD YOUR HEAD HIGH AND TALK ABOUT LOSING TO A SUPERIOR OPPONENT. THERE IS NO SHAME IN LOSING, ONLY SHAME IN NOT TRYING HARD ENOUGH. and BJ never tries hard enough. He is the epitome of what I hate about America. (and I am American) When the going gets tough, have your mommy’s money bail you out, cry foul, or make excuses as to why you did not get what you wanted. Sorry if I have no sympathy for this POS, or you for defending him.

I wouldn't call BJ a POS

What is wrong with his trainer giving an honest assessment of BJ’s physical condition before the fight? Is he supposed to lie? I don’t recall Big Nog taking a bunch of heat from anybody when it was later determined that he was less than 100%. Nobody attacked him and said he was just making excuses.
The facts are that BJ looked poor and lost a very close decision. In my opinion they should fight again immediately.
And why does everybody always bring up his families money. Are you guys their accountants or something. I have a feeling that his families wealth gets blown way out of proportion.

by Adam T. on Apr 13, 2010 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions

agreed

congrats to Frankie, but there’s a reason he was a HUGE underdog. Against a healthy Penn, he’ll get smashed. He’s not making excuses, he’s giving legit circumstances. Have any of you tried to fight or spar sick? I have, and it is a HUGE factor. Lay off BJ, he has a good point.

by LeeroyJenkin$ on Apr 13, 2010 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions

When his mother got involved in greasegate, BJ became a POS. Nothing he will EVER do will change that.

I respect BJ as a fighter, not so much as a person. Everytime I get my hopes up that this type of shit won’t happen, it does. He always has an excuse after not working hard. Do you really think sinusitis made him pudgy? Cry me a fucking river.

Don't know but what I do know is that

1. BJ demolished his previous 5 opponents at 155 in pretty spectacular fashion.
2. He definitely didn’t look himself that night. For what specific reasons none of us will ever know.
3. He lost an extremely close decision, one in which many individuals scored for B.J.
To me that would mean an immediate rematch regardless of who his mommy is or how much money she does or doesn’t have.

Adam T. I agree with everything you said, but DW has very rarely called for immediate rematch...

I think he should have to win at least one other fight beforre another shot. I think it should be Kenny/Edgar and BJ/Maynard.

I still have BJ at #6 P4P. I think he is a great fighter. I am just sick of hearing excuses for his losses, justified or not. You walked in on the back end of a common argument on multiple posts with RoB at the wrong time and only see me being a jerk-off. Hope we can have a conversation away from this post because you seem to know your shit.

Good post

I think BJ did a good job congratulating Edgar on his win. As for an automatic rematch? I remember hearing that as long as you’ve defended your title once you get and auto-rematch. In this case I’d agree because the fight was VERY close and could have went either way.

If you are talking about how Shogun “beat” Machida or BJ “beat” Edgar, you are right, stop talking about it, history shows that both lost. Until they have a chance for a rematch, and I believe that both getting rematches are absurd, stop talking about it. I also believe they will each lose again.

THE LAST I CHECKED

it only takes 1 fight to win a title. A fighter shouldnt have to prove himself twice to convince everyone he is legit. Although I understand every situation is different, I honestly dont think Frankie should have to give Penn a quick rematch as i think he won the match more decisively than most think. He controlled the pace, got take downs, and landed better shots than BJ. just my opinion….

No Penn rematch!

I’m sick of Penn’s fights, either he submits his opponents or beats them into a bloody mess. And when he lost to Edgar it was an embaressment, he moved forward the entire fight looking to get into a brawl. It would have been more entertaining if BJ moved left, right and backwards. No rematch, I want to see more of that fancy footwork of Frankie against some fresh meat.

We all kno grey is most worthy of a title shot..but nobody wants to see it..so is it really a sport if the most worthy is denied a shot due to lack of excitement? Isn’t that a little..unsportsmanlike….I guess it is and will always remain a hybrid..I love it either way

I’m not a fan of inst rematches unless there is a hugely poor decision like Shogun/Machida…that was blatant robbery…even if I did give Machida 2 rounds. I had BJ winning 3-2 but it was close enough that it wasn’t a huge upset moment. I would let frankie defend but not against maynard who would win by suffocation!!

Don’t make excuses as they look silly. When I told you BJ would gas, I was told with the Marinovich’s this was his best camp ever. BJ told us he didn’t overlook Edgar and folks who saw BJ after the fight were laughing at the idea of a sinus infection. Guys were saying he only thing BJ suffered from was a severe case of ass-whoop-itis.
BJ will never, ever beat Edgar. Frankie will gas him everytime. BJ Penn will never match Frankie’s cardio and conditioning.

Why does BJ Penn deserve an automatic rematch?

BJ deserves an automatic rematch because he IS the lightweight decision. Would anyone give two shits about seeing an Edgar/Florian main event? Maybe one shit, but not two shits. Definitely not two shits.

Penn is a legend, an enigma, people love that shit and want to see characters like that not only win, but dominate. People NEED someone to raise up to legendary or heroic status, it’s what we do. This is no different, and it is genuinely believed that he is a legend.

Verdict: Automatic Rematch

A true Penn fan.
What no one is talking about is how the “greatest lightweight in the history of civilization” not only couldn’t finish Edgar but was bloodied by Edgar and the only takedown of the night belonged to Edgar.
Can we begin the excuse list for when Edgar beats Penn and his soft midsection once again?
BJ Penn came into the Octagon out of shape and I’ll prepared to defend his title. How does that behavior earn him an automatic rematch aside from appeasing whiny Penn fans who can’t believe he lost.

by NJMMAFan on Apr 14, 2010 8:02 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Truth is...

BJ was somehow Sick or injured in this fight and didn’t pull out and because of that lost…I think Dana owes him an immediate title shot for his loyalty…That and he is in the top two to three ppv earners the last three years..

by derreckla on Apr 14, 2010 3:23 AM EDT reply actions

No Rematch, Not right now

It was a close fight that could have gone either way even though I had Edgar winning 3 Rounds to Bj’s 2. But the lightweight division is now interesting again. U can have all kind of new matchups and still let BJ get his rematch in 1 or 2 fights. If he is truly the best he will win those fights to earn his rematch. Heres some things u could do now with the division. Florian vs Maynard and winner gets Edgar. BJ can fight tyson griffin. (does he got a fight coming up, i dont know?) Lets say edgar loses to kenflo or gray, then after tyson griffin match give edgar to BJ and winner gets shot back at title. If edgar beats kenflo or gray then if bj beats griffin give him a title shot. If tyson wins give him the title shot. The point is if BJ is the best (I thnk he is) hell earn his way back just like GSP when he had to fight KOS.
