I don't understand all the hate foe Soares..

The man’s just doing his job.. To market and showcase his fighters.. Can’t blame the man for a bit of damage control.

I don't hate Soares at all

But this interview was BS! The ONLY thing Anderson found in the final 3 rounds was distance, and lots of it.

Give a man to fish and feed him for a day. Kick his stupid ass and maybe he will leave you alone.

I love Soares

let the poor man eat his lunch, damn… you could tell he wanted this guy to leave him alone and he kept asking questions. I’m glad they talked everything out with Dana, I’d hate to see a situation with my fav fighter and Dana

I disagree with what you say, but I will fight to the death for your right to say it

i dont like him cos...

its always an excuse cant he just say that silva was shit, cos he clearly was. whats all the bs about him having ring rust? dudes P4P fighter in the world. GSP fights just as much as he does and yet he always puts in a 100% (am a big gsp fan) and at least he engages as well

by ruanfiy on Apr 12, 2010 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions

engages but...

still doesn’t finish. Anderson may have looked like a jackass but we’ve seen what he can do when motivated.

Fedor played Russian Roulette with a fully loaded gun and won... but still avoids the UFC!

I dont believe that distance thing though, he could have ended it whenever

by Ponch-Hoe on Apr 12, 2010 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions

WOW

it really shouldnt have even gone to the third round, considering it was all striking. nate showed that finding your range on maia isnt that tough, and quite frankly i dont buy the fact that silva “couldn’t” finish the fight. He chose not to, for whatever reason.

Once Dana relaxes and gets over his initial madness...

he will realize what happened and hopefully get the message.

Anderson needs to fight the best people in the world at any weight. Otherwise his talent is wasted and he isn’t gonna play the game.

AS is bigger than the UFC, I’ll say it again and again.

I don’t agree that AS is bigger than the UFC. He is not Tiger Woods. However, I do agree that Dana needs to get the picture. Put Anderson in with a higher level of competition. If Dana doest challenge Anderson, he will clown around. I for one didn’t like the Patrick cote matchup, was pissed about the Thales keites matchup, and didn’t even care to see the Maia matchup. Anderson Silva is the maybe the P4P king right now. Why is he UFC , the premier MMA organization struggling to find him challenging competition? I think the answer is find a way to move him up to LHW without stripping him of his title.

No way

Anderson has no excuse. Find his distance?? every strike he threw landed and hurt Maia. How can Anderson have any problems finding his range against Maia?? He looked pretty comfortable out there with his hands down.

Silva has never had a problem against any 85er and now Maia who has average striking makes him hesitant and cannot seem to find his rhythm? For a guy who has 76.6 reach I don’t think it would have been that hard for Silva to KO the Jits specialist.

I didn't take it personally

But still found it to be way over the top. I have actually enjoyed Silva’s “showmanship” in the past, but he just took it too far, IMO. It would’ve been one thing if he fought to finish the fight, but it was clear he didn’t care. Not sure what the point of all of it was, but I’m sure there was one.

by Diceman on Apr 12, 2010 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree that the BJ loss is the biggest story out of this event...

But given Dana’s clear disapproval it will be interesting to see how he handles Silva going forward. I’ve stood up for Shad several times for showboating during fights, stating that it’s a part of pro sports, which it is. But usually when people talk smack or showboat it’s after they do something good, or it’s brief and they’re pumping themselves and their teammates up. I understand if Silva wants to do some taunting and put on a show, but he taunted and Maia and then started refusing to put on a show. That’s why I understand people being so upset. It’s as though Silva was upset about something, and decided to take it out on everyone else, whether they were part of the reason he was upset or not. Like I said, I just don’t get the motive behind it. For me, it raises more questions than it makes a statement, which is what Silva was trying to do, IMO.

by Diceman on Apr 12, 2010 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions

That seems to me the best possible solution

I do agree with those that have asked, “What did Dana expect?” It’s not like this is the first time we’ve seen this(it just wasn’t as extreme before now). I don’t care how good Maia is on the ground, we all knew he was getting it there. We just expected this to end badly before all the yelling, cursing, and avoidance started. Move him to LHW where he faces some real challenges. Giving him guys that offer literally NO threat on the feet is going to be a boring fight everytime with Silva.

Anderson Silva vs Dana White!!!

He’s sending Dana a message!!! Look at all the guys AS has fought. Only two of them have been ground guys(BJJ)!!! And those two fights went the same way!!! Thales Leites and now Demian Maia… It’s clear AS wants to fight!!! Look at the Forrest fight and the Franklin fights, and the rest of them!!! He wants fighters who will stand and throw with him!!! Why do you think he wants Brock? Brock will give him a fight!!! GSP will try to give him a fight but he’s not big enough, and strong enough to hang with AS!!!! Give him Brock or hell he wanted to fight Mir, give him Mir!!!! He wants a challenge. Untill Dana realizes this expect more of his fights to go like it did the other day!!!

I know he won both fights...

I just don’t get what his issue is with actually fighting them once they are in the ring. The runners stretch and punch to the thighs were impressive, don’t get me wrong-but 10 minutes of laps, 5 minutes of screaming, 3 minutes of kicking a hand, 2 minutes of the runners stretch, and approx. 3 minutes of actual fighting does not make for an intriguing or even slightly entertaining fight. I am not sure what happened with the other 7 minutes or so =) it wasn’t fighting, but I am pretty sure they were spent on some sort of jogging or other wasted movement completely wasting my $50 expense. Maybe it would have been funnier if I had gone to wing house or some bar that had it or watched it online for free. $50 could have been a night at the bar, a good bag of the devils lettuce, or an oriental massage with a happier ending then that fight!

I Am note sure how people are defending his actions. Khalib ran for 2 rounds and he ended up running himself right out of the UFC, but Silva running for 2 rounds and clowing for another 2 and people seem ok with it.

Complete BS!

Before the fight started they were all nice to each other bowing and hand shaking and stuff, then anderson keeps on aggregative Maia to strike with him and mocks him for not doing so. Then at the later rounds, Maia throws wild looping punches and anderson doesnt counter at all. At least for me Maia tried to make something happen at the end. After the fight, they bow at each other again and shake hands. This just shows what kind of person anderson is, now without a doubt he is an amazing fighter but, he is a different person when it comes to the media. He has a really bad personality.

AS is playing us all....

Can’t believe a word he says. His performance was disgraceful. If Maia had truly disrespected him, beat him up and end the fight. But Maia probably didn’t say anything out of the norm leading up to a fight and AS tried to deflect attention from his lame performance by saying he had a grudge against Maia. It’s all BS and Soares is obviously the biggest AS nuthugger who continues with the BS. UFC should kick em both to the curb.

And to think that the UFC recently extended this guy’s contract. Bold move given the guys history. If they don’t have it already, I’m sure the UFC will have it’s lawyers change the contract wording to take legal/financial action against fighters who pull this crap.

Stop crying about this. ARe you really that suprised? Everyone knew this was Thales fight all over. So what he disrespected maia. This is a sport where they PUNCH EACH OTHER IN THE FACE!!! I don’t get some of you guys. It’s a fight not a walk in the park. Watch Thales Pre fight against Anderson….Thales gave Anderson the up most respect and said once the fight hits the ground I dont think it will be over and the fight will have just begun. He said he can win this fight.

Maia says I will submit and take one of his legs home. In Brazil respect is a big thing. Anderson felt he was disrespected so he disrespected Maia back by cursing at him and making him suffer.

Dana's upset, but it's their own damn fault!

Putting ‘the best fighter in the world’ against Leites, Griffin, and Maia? These past 3 fights have been ridiculous because the UFC chooses to baby their superstar. They just want to showcase his skills against lesser opponents. Anderson’s mindset is questionable, but these match-ups are absurd. Put the best against the best and good fights will happen,

I think

Maia was saying.. “Come fight me in the ground, you’re a black belt right?”
Silva was also making an 8 sign using his fingers representing the “Spider’s legs” challenging Maia to take one home.. unfortunately Maia never came close to getting Silva on his back.. or atleast get a hold of him even for 5 seconds..

I think Ed is right

Sure AS should’ve put him away in the 2nd when he felt good. But I think he was more concerned with humbling Maia, really “punishing” him as he put it. But then when it got into the championship rounds of the fight he clearly wasn’t comfortable with his distance against Maia. It was his first fight at middleweight in a year and first fight period since August. To me, that’s what’s to blame.

Look, I watched this fight again last night and I completely agree with Soares. Watching it live you are more shocked because of your expectations coming in but re-watching it you really see more of the factors that led to what happened. And what you find is Maia did not engage at all until the 5th.

I think Maia threw all of 25 strikes the entire fight? If your opponent is more concerned with reaching the 4th and 5th rounds than winning the fight, I don’t really see what you can do. Sure he could’ve hopped into Maia’s guard while he was laying on the mat but what obligation does Silva have to anybody to do that? His only obligation is defend his title successfully and that’s what he did.

I put this all on Maia and Silva’s lay-off.

by Dion03 on Apr 12, 2010 4:52 PM EDT reply actions

It's a Brazillian thing yo!!

I’m starting to think Anderson doesn’t like bashing up fellow Brazillians? Leites and now Maia!! He just didn’t want to punish them. The only other thing I can think off is Anderson has lost his mind due to drug abuse because that was some wierd arse dancing and his facial expressions between rounds looked of a guy on the come down.thoughts?

anderson has always been a disrespectful prick to the guys he faces. go back and watch his fights.

anderson shouldn’t be anyone’s hero, he can fight, so what!? he is a lousy person.

for all the nutthuggers, he dodges guys that can challenge him. he dodged hendo, bitched about fighting vitor and sonnen, but was happy with leites and maia????
funny how that works.

It wouldn't have been good for MMA

but I wouldn’t have minded seeing Maia knee Silva in the face after the fight when Silva bowed down and then have Dana award him KO OTN…..
