UFC Quick Quote: Hell hath no fury like Dan Hardy on 'UFC Primetime'

Dan-hardy-scream_medium

"I know that I can give GSP hell when the times come. It’s so sweet stepping out into the Octagon on the other side saying, ‘I told you so.’ All these GSP fans that are betting the house on him, when they wake up Sunday morning ... they aren’t going to be too impressed with themselves."

-- Tough talk from welterweight number one contender Dan Hardy, who gets his chance at the Canadian uber-champ at UFC 111 on March 27 in Newark. "The Outlaw" gets to further burrow himself under the skin of St. Pierre fans when he debuts on "UFC Primetime" this Wednesday, March 10 at 10 p.m. ET on Spike TV. Is the Brit simply making the most of his time in the spotlight? Or is he genuinely confident in his ability to dethrone one of the greatest fighters in the game today?

War Team Rough House

Realistically Hardy has no chance but I’ll be rooting for him and the other boys. They’re all on a roll right now and each of the lads are getting better every fight, 2010 will be the year of the Rough House.

Def Rooting

FOr HArdy I like his team too. I doubt anyone is going to ever beat GSp at that weight but lets see. BTW GSP needs to go back to his old days and strike it out more… Ex the JAy Hieron fight. Thats the GSP i would love to see back in the OCtagon not the scared to strike GSP we see today.

This guy sure talks a lot

For someone who hasn’t beaten anyone in the top 10 of the ww division. And he struggled mightily with Marcus Davis. That decision could have gone either way. He’s going to be GSP’s easiest fight to date!

by Calu on Mar 9, 2010 7:21 PM EST reply actions

Struggled with Davis!?!?! Are you sure!

I don’t know what the problem is with Dan Hardy. He’s a great character, trains very hard and all he has done is beat the people the UFC throw at him. Is his shot at GSP coming too soon, probably. GSP is a monster. But who else is gonna fight him!?

He got knocked out by Serra (but we all saw what happened in the rematch at 83), but after that knockout he walked through Koscheck, finished Hughes, battered Serra, dominated Fitch (if a rather boring fight), beat the living crap out of BJ and controlled Alves for 5 rounds.

So who does that leave!? Johnson!? he got subbed by Kos, Kampmann (smashed by Daley – keep your eye on that boy!!), Killa B, not so sure yet.

They may as well give Hardy a shot (and he does have a shot), ok GSP may well get the win again, but I don’t think Hardy should be written off so easily. I think this could be interesting and the only other option except for Hardy, would be Paulo Thiago (getting better and better) or Daley – but Daley is fighting Kos and Thiago will likely face Kampmann, so for now, Hardy is the only option.

And no, Hardy did not struggle with Davis. First round went to Davis by cuddling and ZERO damage, round two he floored Davis with a nice knee and again Davis couldn’t do any damage at all. Round three Hardy made a mess of Davis with an elbow, and the referee checking the cut probably saved his sorry ass from the KO as he was wobbling all over the place.

Go for it Hardy, odds against you, but rooting for you.
But GSP is a monster!!!!!!

If running your mouth won belts, Hardy would already be champion.

Hardy should probably shut up now. I know he likes to play mind games and he wants to sell the fight, but pissing off Georges is never a good strategy. And as BJ will attest, it makes you look like an ass when you get clowned on.

He hasn’t even earned a shot at the strap by beating anybody of note, and he talks like he’s this unstoppable wrecking machine.

Dude, you couldn’t even finish the Auschwitz survivor or the American tard grenade.

Truth be told, I like Hardy. I think he’s funny and an exciting guy to watch. Good for the sport.

Just isn’t gonna beat a legend like GSP, that’s all — and It gets under my skin a bit when a class act like GSP, who respects every one of his opponents, gets smeared.

Smeared?

I haven’t heard Hardy say anything truly derogatory about GSP, other than the expected, “I’m gonna knock him out” bit, and what not. Hardy seems to be rather respectful of GSP, and GSP likewise is the classiest guy in the sport, unless he’s dealing with Matt Hughes, and then he’s “Not Impressed….”

by RU486 on Mar 10, 2010 2:08 AM EST up reply actions

I agree

No, he has nothing but respect for GSP. All fighters in the build up say they’re gonna win. Why wouldn’t they!

GSP is a class act and Dan Hardy is a character, but he has been 100% respectful to GSP, but all fighters have to go in there believing they can/will win, otherwise, they are already beaten.

by AintNoSunshine on Mar 9, 2010 7:26 PM EST reply actions

I expect GSP will surprise some people and hurt Hardy standing. His new muscle has no doubt increased his striking power, and his kickboxing is superior to Hardy’s. I’m sick of people saying that GSP’s striking is only effective because his opponents fear the takedown. He was wrecking good strikers early in his career before he became such a dominant wrestler.

True.

Which Good Strikers did he Wreck though? I mean I agree I think he is better striking then Hardy but I dont think GSP ever wants to chance his button being punched. His wrestling is too good to not use it. That would be a stupid gameplan in my opinion.

by AintNoSunshine on Mar 9, 2010 7:38 PM EST up reply actions

I think he’ll use his wrestling, I just think he’ll send a message by showing his hands and feet a bit more in this one. He is aware of the criticism he’s received for taking his fights to the ground so much. He said in an interview that he wants a knockout. I take that to mean more than just GnP. And Spratt, Heiron, and Miller were considered good strikers at the time he fought them.

Yeah I Guess.

I dont classify those guys usually as good strikers. Hieron was more of a wrestling powerhouse I thought back then. But if you remember during the Penn II fight Greg told him between rounds okay lets kick box this round. And if he does that vs Hardy it will be after the 1st round.

by AintNoSunshine on Mar 9, 2010 7:46 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah. If you look at the WW division back then, there really weren’t many guys with a high striking pedigree. Even now it’s a division dominated mostly by wrestlers. Alves, Daley, and now Hardy being the higher-tier exceptions.

I don't think so

Hardy has been training stand up since he was six

watch this

GSP will not “have his way” with Hardy on the feet. Not saying GSP won’t hold his own on the feet, but there isn’t really much room between them there. If anything I would say Dan is a little more comfortable fighting on the feet and may well have an edge there.

I really doubt GSP will stand though, atleast not until he has squished the life out of Dan for a couple of rounds. All GSP ever seems to talk about these days is how he has to stop his opponent from doing this or that… I have to be careful of subs or stand up or kicks etc… his whole thing seems to be about winning by making sure that the other guy doesn’t win. If you see what I’m getting at. Dan Hardy: I’m going to try and knock him out, GSP:I have to be careful of subs and he’s good on his feet etc. he seems to be on the defensive, more concerned with not losing than winning convincingly. That’s why I don’t think he’ll stand until late second/3rd at the earliest, that’s if he spends any significant time on his feet.

by Spinning Fat Kick on Mar 10, 2010 7:27 AM EST up reply actions

I'm not making a prediction as to when GSP will strike with Hardy, or for how long...

I just think he outclasses Hardy everywhere. Hardy is not the devastating striker people try to make him sound like. He always talks about KO’ing people, but his power isn’t that great. If they were fighting in a K-1 match, I would still pick GSP. He is quicker, faster, stronger, changes levels and mixes it up better, and has better kicks. I don’t understand the criticism about GSP’s gameplan. If I’m an NFL team, and I have an awesome offensive line, and Barry Sanders as the running back getting 150 yards a game, why would I change that? Would that team start throwing the ball just because fans want to see long touchdowns? Of course not. The object of the game is to win. Just as the object of the fight is to win. You do what gives you the best chance to win. Why would GSP just say, “Well, I’ve got great wrestling, and I know I can win by mixing it up, but fuck it, let’s just stand and bang for the hell of it.”? Just because the other parts of Hardy’s game aren’t as solid as GSP’s doesn’t mean he has better striking just because he has to use it more. GSP has been completely DOMINATING fights, and even when he doesn’t finish them, they are very convincing wins. You’re off base on that one.

No

You fight to win. Doesn’t matter what sport you’re playing, you play to win. Especially when you’re the champ. You want to be the champ, you have to beat the champ. I’m sick of people accusing me of being a one dimensional fan because I like to see fights finished, and told that I don’t appreciate skill blah blah etc. Martial arts is about hurting the other guy, any practical martial art I have ever trained in is about hurting the other guy, ideally to the point that he can’t continue. What alot of you guys fail to realise is that a skilled martial artist finishes fights!!!!!

I didn't accuse you of being a one dimensional fan or that you don't like skill so you can calm down

Many martial arts, like karate(which GSP is a practitioner of), teach you to defend yourself. The goal is not to injure, the goal is to preserve your life and the life of others. Whether that means walking away or gouging someones eyes out. Martial arts is about defending yourself and winning the fight. Some teach you to do this through violence, others by avoidance. That’s one thing I don’t get. Recently people have started to love Machida’s style because he inflicts damage without taking any(the real goal of fighting). When Machida does this he is hailed as a great fighter and strategist because he employs a smart strategy. GSP does the same thing. He plays to his strengths, inflicts damage without taking any, and people say he is scared. It makes no sense. The goal of fighting is winning. In real life if I’m in a fight my goal is to walk away without any damage. The goal isn’t to make sure the other guy has to wake up in the hospital. If that’s a by-product of making sure I walk away safe with the win, so be it. But the goal of fighting is NOT to finish people. It is to win, and that is what martial arts teach. You say I fail to realize that a skilled martial artist finishes fights. Some do, some don’t. Depends what style you use. Machida and GSP are two of the most skilled fighters on the planet, and sometimes they finish fights, but often they don’t. One thing they both do is win though.

I gotta agree Dice...

That was a great reference using Machida. I never understood that myself and have this argument time and time again with my friends. One fighter is ellusive and the other is a pussy! Not sure how that figures.

As far as GSP goes, people forget the first half of his life he spent in Kyokushin Karate, which is a super offensive, hard line off shoot of Goju Ryu. Many of their tournaments are full contact and use Knockdown Karate point system (which means you are allowed to KO your opponent, the majority of tournaments penalize you for the KO).It is completely practical in the street. It was one of Bas Ruttens infleuntial styles. That being said, for all the hype behind Hardy’s stand up who has he KO’d? Rory Markham! I think GSP’s TKO of Jay Heiron trumps any ko Hardy has on his record. Anyone with half a skill set has taken Hardy the distance, I think GSP beats Hardy anyway he feels like it. More than likely he will play it safe but I can see him doing to Hardy what he did to Thiago. Make him fear the takedown in round 1 and 2, and punish him anyway he feels like after that. Thiago imo is much stronger then Hardy and I don’t see Hardy being able to stand up as easily as Alves did. I am not a GSP fan, I don’t hate him either, but I just don’t see how Hardy can win this fight even if GSP keeps it standing. Hardy has a punchers chance. It worked for Serra, maybe it will Hardy.

I wouldn’t say that he struggled to get the decision either, though it was worrying seeing Marcus outwrestle him. Whilst his defensive wrestling has improved a lot since then, as proven in the Swick fight, it’s still nowhere near good enough to deal with GSP.

Besides Serra only fights once a year and is no longer a top contender while Fitch and Alves are set to face each other. Dan won’t beat GSP but when a champion is as dominant as GSP the only options are a one sided title fight or endless rematches.

its called hyping the fight.

Things Hardy says are supposed to get a reaction and it obviously works. So what if hes confident and cocky it’s all part of the mind games

It adds to the excitement for when the fight eventually comes around!

Haven’t seen such a confiable welterweight contender. Hope Hardy gives hard work to St Pierre.
