jumping over a 48 inch bar

doesn’t mean you have a 48 inch vert… you measure your height with your arm raised and jump to touch the bars. Like they do in the NFL combine. All this is is a 48 inch hurdle. Impressive, but not THAT impressive!

With such athleticism, GSP could be fighting for the next 15-20 years.

That should be fun to watch. I’m pretty sure he’ll be a hell of a lot more competitive at 45 than Coleman is today.

GSP doesn’t strike me as a guy who will be fighting well past his prime. He won’t need the money and he’ll already have accomplished so much.

Funny you bring that up..

But I keep thinking that with todays technology and what we know about health and whatnot, that it will be common for fighters to fight well into their forties.. Given another 10years, Randy’s competitiveness at his age won’t seem like such a accomplishment, just the norm. I mean people are living longer and longer, and can stay active and fitter much later into their lives now.

In sports where athleticism and speed are so paramount, guys that are over 40 are always going to be at a disadvantage when pitted against men in their physical primes.

Yes, modern nutrition and conditioning will prolong careers, but that same nutrition and conditioning will also make guys in their 20s and 30s even better.

Fighting is a young man’s game. There is always the odd exception that proves the rule, but it’s not going to change. Guys that take care of themselves and havn’t accrued too much wear and tear may indeed compete longer than previous decades, but they’ll still be a step behind guys who are in their haydays.

True.

But if you take a guy like GSP with so much athleticism, he can afford to lose some in his old age and still be leagues above the average fighters of that time. He can be showin fighters for another decade da riddum.

by RayRayJr on Mar 9, 2010 7:15 PM EST up reply actions

But in a sport where...

experience can trump athleticism and speed at times it may be possible. That is how Randy gets by a lot of the time. He makes his gameplan, sticks to it(since he doesn’t lose it when he gets hit or in trouble), and knows exactly what to do in every situation. There is a lot to be said when you have that kindof experience. Only an elite 20yr old is getting passed the skill and experience level of that experience level (a la Cain Velasquez and most young fighters are nowhere near his level).

Kind of sheds some light on the athleticism of Fitch’s plyometrics workout.

what a specific ratio that Fitch is not.

I'm an engineer, i'm all about the specific ratio's.

on a side note, what exactly does this work out for the fighters? I always wondered. Does he plan to jump over hardy if he goes for a takedown?

by RayRayJr on Mar 9, 2010 7:11 PM EST up reply actions

It’s a demonstration of strength and explosiveness. Imagine the power generated from fast twitch fibers to jump like that. Now imagine that jump is horizontal, and he’s double-legging your ass clean across the cage.

48 inch Vert

doesnt really translate into MMA very much however it is impressive. And I guess it demonstrates his fast twitch muscles in his legs. Thats pretty good. I used to have a pretty sweet Vert in high school not so much now.

by AintNoSunshine on Mar 9, 2010 7:11 PM EST reply actions

Jumping over something that’s 48 inches tall isn’t a 48 inch vertical. Impressive, however that’s not a 48 inch vertical.

by GKINMD on Mar 9, 2010 7:14 PM EST reply actions

True. But it’s awesome nontheless.

It’s just annoying because vertical leap is so often misunderstood and misrepresented, stuff like this just perpetuates it.

by GKINMD on Mar 9, 2010 7:22 PM EST up reply actions

its simple your actual vertical is supposed to be measured...

…from as high as you can reach standing, mark on a wall. then jump with no running and touch as high on the wall as you can. that way its measuring you actual vertical. i don’t wanna brag but i too can do what gsp did. i promise. i do it for drinks at the bar over lots of dumb things. but when i’m bending my legs to achieve what im jumping over it’s not my actual vertical. take away a foot or so give or take.

WOW....im impressed

That was a sickkkk vertical jump man. GSP is the sh I wasimpressed with BJ jumping out of the pool as well. That was a cool video. Better then watching hardy shop for ball protectors in america!!

Those are all good, but this is probably the most impressive one i’ve seen Keith Eloi jumping into the back of an F150, tailgate up, STANDING STILL no running jump, in flip flops.

All of these vids were awesome. Remarkable athletes.

But I must admit, the jumping out of the pool doesn’t seem so impressive anymore.

Impressive

But his buddies are too much. They try to make his jump sound like the most gangsta thing…EVER!

by Shadyone33 on Mar 10, 2010 7:46 AM EST up reply actions

bj penns jump out of the pool is more impressive than gsp hurdling. ive seen fat people hurdle.not impressed. to jump out of a pool 3 feet deep and land on your feet takes alot more athleticism. the pressure of the water holding you back in the pool and still jumping out is just plain impressive.

by hehehe hahaha on Mar 9, 2010 11:03 PM EST reply actions

Reading too much into the vertical guys, I just have to point that out.

Him and BJ are athletes nothing new or exciting, Jerry Rice was one of slowest recievers in the combine but one of the greatest football players ever.

in jerrys prime he wasnt exactly one of the slowest guys there, he wasnt the fastest either i get your point, but at his position speed doesnt mean that much

athleticisim in mma means nothing anyway look at big country the only athletic thing about him is how he fights mma and wins eating contests

by randy murders on Mar 10, 2010 1:44 AM EST up reply actions

For sure real impressive, to pass bj´s guard at will is far more impressive to me.

by Antifit on Mar 10, 2010 1:30 AM EST up reply actions

not a 48 jump

sucking your legs up like that is not how the jump is measured. You stand with a arm stretch out and from where your middle finger reaches is where the mearsurement starts and then you jump up an tag this pole as high as you can and the pole has marks on it. GSP has a good jump but he also did it stepping up onto a block first. What BJ did is far cooler because he did it at age 30 and the water makes it so much harder.

evryone expect gsp to double leg n gnp his way to victory. I see hardy trying to circle and unload. GSP should be the fav but not by the odds he is getting

hardy wins by ko. guarantee it

GSP is going to destroy Hardy. Im sorry to let you know this inside info i have.

But if he didn’t it would for sure rock the mma world.

ur just sayin that cuz ur precious bj got handed an ass beating by gsp…hardy has ko power n Matt serra proved that with alittle ko power you can drop gsp n make him tap due to strikes
