UFC 115: Martin Kampmann vs Paulo Thiago under consideration for June 12

Kampmann-thiago_medium

There's an intriguing welterweight match-up brewing between 170-pound standouts Martin Kampmann and Paulo Thiago as the Las Vegas Sun reports the two have verbally agreed to a showdown at UFC 115 on June 12 from Vancouver.

Kampmann appears to be on the mend after withdrawing from his UFC 111 fight against Ben Saunders to heal a grisly eyelid gash he suffered in training.

"The Hitman" emptied his clip into Jacob Volkmann when "Christmas" rang in the New Year for the injured Rory Markham at the UFC 108: "Evans vs. Silva" event earlier this year.

It was a much needed win for the Dane, who saw his title aspirations evaporate at the hands of Paul "Semtex" Daley back at UFC 103: "Franklin vs. Belfort" in September 2009. No question he'll be looking to inch his way back into contention by arresting the rise of the Brazilian supercop.

Star-divide

Thiago has made a habit out of spoiling the progress of top welterweights from the American Kickboxing Academy, including his debut win over Josh Koscheck at UFC 95 back in 2009.

Aside from Jobn Fitch, who outworked him en route to a unanimous decision win at UFC 100, Thiago made "Quick" work of Mike Swick at February's UFC 109 event to cement himself as the real deal and not just a flash in the pan.

He'll need to be careful with Kampmann, who has skills both on his feet and on the ground -- but more importantly may be fighting to stay relevant in the 170-pound division after the loss to "Semtex."

UFC 115 is expected to feature the third (and hopefully final ) dance between former light heavyweight champions Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz, fresh off their coaching gigs at The Ultimate Fighter 11. Mirko Cro Cop and Pat Barry are also expected to hook 'em up.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for future updates on this still-developing fight card.

I really like this match up. A very good all round MMA fighter like the Dane against an evolving/up and coming Thiago.

Agreed, i really like this fight.

Kampmann has a big advantage standing but T’s power is an equalizer. On the mat, Paulo’s got this pretty tight. Wrestling is kinda weak on both sides but thiago is better at TDs in the clinch while i give martin slight edge from distance.

disagree ojr.........and as has been the trend lately..........

how about a bet??, if thiago wins, you have to join the brazilian special police force, and put yourself in the line of fire everyday, infultrate a drugs cartel etc etc…….lol…., and if kampann wins i’ll learn to speak danish, and promise not to use google translator to prove it.

by freedomthrtyfve on Mar 9, 2010 4:53 PM EST up reply actions

I'll take Kampmann

sure, Paulo has power, but his technique is ugly. I thought Volkmann won his fight vs PT, and won the ground part of it especially. I think Kampmann should score on the feet, but when he starts feeling comfortable and loosening up, thats when PT’s wild counterpunching will catch him. Kampmann needs to play this fight up and down and keep PT guessing.

Kampmann by a close, but clear, Unanimous Decision.

btw, I’ve started liking Paulo Thiago a bit. I ustacould not stand the guy, but he’s grown on me.

I agree but..

As we seen from the fight with Daley, Kampmann isn’t to bright with the strategies. This is matchmaking at it’s finest, great matchup. I don’t really care who wins I like them both, but I think Thiago would have a better chance against GSP in the long run(not that either or them would beat GSP, just sayin)

You may be right OJR but I will not underestimate PT any more.

Kampmanns Stand Up

It sucked against Daley. Almost overwhelmed at times. Thiago has improved a hell lot on the stand up knocking out Koscheck and getting the better of Swick.
I was actually hoping UFC would wait until Ricardo Almeida’s fight. I see that as a great fight of the future Thiago vs Almeida

by Apocacryptic on Mar 10, 2010 2:38 AM EST up reply actions

i hope this goes down!

this would be a solid fight, leaning with Thiago

Now I ask to myself: If Thiago Alves defeats Jon Fitch, will the Pitbull fight for the title or will take on the winner of PT vs Kampmman?

I would have picked Kampmann six months ago, but based on what we’ve seen from both of these guys since, I have to roll with Thiago.

FFS Dana, youy better be throwing a big, relevant fight on this fucking card. I’m not shelling out hundreds of dollars to watch Gimpfest ’10. Compared to Montreal, this card looks like a damn Cirque du Soleil show.

Thiago did look great in his last fight and I´ve gotta be honest, I was really happy to see him choke out Swick. Lately Swick´s kinda been getting on my nerves so to see Paulo drop him and then choke him put a smile on my face :)

I think Paulo is just gonna get better and better with every fight. Kampmann is good but Paulo is such a tough guy. Mentally he´s one of the strongest MMA fighters out there. I mean, he´s probably KILLED people through his BOPE job. How afraid is he gonna be of Kampmann?

Thiago takes this fight and I´m predicting, although I suck at fight picks, 2 round submission.

I don’t see kampman doing anybkind of damage at all 2 thiago. I like how Paulo took out swick that was bad ass! Swick looked like 1 of those long skinny ass dogs were U can see there rib cage.

by d*locc on Mar 9, 2010 4:33 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Kampmann is a Legit Striker.

And will pose problems for Thiago. Now in my opinion I think Kampmann is much more technical then Swick so Thiago will need to be much more careful not to get picked off.

I haven't ever seen kampman outstrike any1.

They always say how gud a striker he is but I’ve never seen him ko anybody or even outstrike them standing up. It always looks like he loses the fights he can’t get 2 the ground. Thiago looked gud in all the fights I’ve seen so far.
