WEC 47 fighter salaries and paydays for 'Bowles vs Cruz'

Ufc81-bonus_medium

The official fighter purses for those who competed at WEC 47: "Bowles vs Cruz" this past Saturday night (March 6) from the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio were released earlier today by the Ohio Athletic Commission (OAC).

Team Alpha Male product Joseph Benavidez walked away from the event with the most impressive performance as well as the biggest payday. The probable WEC bantamweight number one contender pocketed a cool $29,000 for his submission victory over Miguel Torres, who took home $26,000 in defeat.

The main event participants, now former WEC 135-pound champ Brian Bowles and the new king of the bantamweights, Dominick Cruz, earned $12,000 and $18,000 respectively.

In what is likely to be his last payout as a mixed martial arts competitor, Jens Pulver received $14,000 in his loss to Javier Vasquez, who is now $12,000 richer for retiring "Lil Evil."

For example, the WEC often hands out extra cash for "Fight of the Night," "Knockout of the Night" and "Submission of the Night." To check out these figures for WEC 47 go here.

Does anyone know if WEC has bonus?

Because Jorgenson and Benevidez are in dead heat for Sub of the night.

I want Ricardo Arona to sign with the UFC and his first fight should be James Toney. This is a win win scenario for MMA

they do have the bonuses as the UFC

Just scaled down tremendously. I think its 10k for WEC.

You’ve gotta think Reed Harris was hoping for a Torres/Bowles 2 title fight. That fight will probably now happen as a non-title affair, but a Cruz/Benavidez title fight is possibly the worst-drawing title fight they could conceivably put together.

lol, it cracks me up when professional announcers say shit like that

That’s like saying “fist punch”

The fist punch is my signature move, followed closely by the leg kick to the groin.

12k to defend your title

9k to be #1 contender and fight and claim title. 9k extra for win but still. Lol paying 30k total for the main event? Not too shabby for Zuffa.

i just wish i saw it the same way as 95% the other posters

Apparently I’m an “idiot” and “uneducated”, for “somehow” believing that zuffa underpays. Then 2% of the remainding 100% tell me that they don’t give a shit what the fighters make. Good. I’m glad you guys don’t care what the guys you make sure to wayh and admire, and be a fan of, make. Nice of you. Big hearts. Yet its funny how the posters that “don’t care” always seem to only tell the guy who thinks their underpaid. Not a word of your “non caring” to the posters who think their “paid just fine”.

My favorite argument is: “Throw me in there, ill fight for 9k!”.

Sure ya will pal.

Lol someone’s getting defensive I agree with you they should be paid more but insulting a bunch of random people on the internet really doesnt advance your position

I never made any mention of any particularl poster. If they think I am speaking about them, then they probs said what I mentioned. Therefore no harm, no foul, as I didn’t call anyone a retard or a fuckin this and that, so I stand by what I said.

I get jumped on a lot for my belief in the pay department of Zuffa. And its not by 1 at a time. Its usually 5-10 on me. Hell I’ve had fanposts with my name in the title, just due to how “dumb I can be”, on this topic.

I never said anything of extreme offense to anyone. I make no apologies this time.

yea, throw that person in there and he'll come home aftera nice weekend on the hospital

For a sport that goes out on injuring your opponent it sure as hell should be everyone’s best interest to collect as much money as they can before ruining themselves.

UFC will be great on Versus btw, watching Caps/Stars now just saw the Vera/Jones ad.

Riding a 13 game home winning streak. Longest in franchise history, and close to clinching their whole division already in mid March.

Ps: OVI scores and ties it.

i would be laughing all the way to the bank

by randy murders on Mar 8, 2010 7:45 PM EST up reply actions

WOW.

Now I know why Dana White is adamant that the WEC will not merge with the UFC. Why would he pay these guys more? Does anyone know how much Bellator pays? I would think that they can offer pretty comparable money to the WEC.

by Ulf Murphy on Mar 8, 2010 9:07 PM EST reply actions

they definitely offer comparable.

Not only that, they have tournament set up as well, which allows the overall winner to walk away with 150k to 250k that night.

This is exactly why I’ve always said they won’t absorb WEC into the UFC as well. Makes no sense at all. Even Faber, their golden boy (unjustifiable IMO) makes just over 50k a fight and I believe he’s top paid.

If ufc took them in faber, torres, bowles, cruz, brown, etc would all instantly be making 100k to 250k a fight.

Zuffa won’t push that button.

by daniel worby on Mar 8, 2010 9:31 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I am a big believer in market forces determining fighter pay, as you an I have discussed in the past, and this should be an example of the changes that will start to erode Zuffa, specifically WEC, brand power. By paying the winner of their tournaments 6 figures, Bellator should start to corner the market on the lighterweight fighters, as long as they are able to produce a product like the last tournament. If they have one bad tournament, it could be all over for them.

by Ulf Murphy on Mar 8, 2010 9:46 PM EST up reply actions

pay-per-view

i really hope the pay-per-view guys get more than this. this is a pathetic payday. at least with the pay-per-view they hopefully will get a cut of the sales

by Jui-jitsu4life on Mar 8, 2010 10:40 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Urijah Faber is by far better paid than the rest of the crew.
