Brandon Vera: Somebody's going to sleep on March 21

Vera-sleeps_medium

Quoteworthy:

"You take me to the ground this year, you're going to get submitted, I'll tell you that much right now. He's with a new camp, he's with (Greg) Jackson's and them. They're good game plan people so he might try to take me to the ground, but I tell you this much in 2010, my jiu-jitsu game I've been tightening back up. Jones, he's got the skills; he'll stand with me. Somebody's going to go to sleep."

UFC light heavyweight standout and Muay Thai striker Brandon Vera hopes to show Jon Jones "The Truth" about where he stands in the 205-pound division when they square off at UFC on Versus 1 from the 1STBANK Center in Broomfield, Colorado, on March 21. "Bones" has been obliterating the competition since his UFC debut in 2008 and could vault himself into title contention with a dominant performance over Vera. Someone may indeed "go to sleep" in this one -- but who?

Jones looked like he was out to make a statement last fight, and I expect him to try again this fight....

And he will succeed, Jones via destruction. Everyone loves to talk about Vera’s MT as if he’s just ridiculous on the feet, but the TRUTH is, he hasn’t looked impressive in a while. Jones is going to open some eyes.

I think you guys have it twisted

My boy Brandon is taking this one via which ever mistake Jones makes. One slip up and thats all she wrote. Nighty Nite Mr Jones. I do like Bones but its not his time yet. Vera’s gonna surge and contend for the title soon. Mark my words.

by Nokimono on Mar 8, 2010 6:12 PM EST up reply actions

Nighty night?

With the exception of a leg-kick fest against the incredible Mike Patt, this guy hasn’t finished anyone with strikes since Mir. That was in 2006.

Yeah.

2006.

True

But there is little doubt that Vera can hurt his opponents with his stand up. I think he landed two clean strikes in the Couture match (kicks to the mid-section) and both had Randy folding over. You yourself have also mentioned the power of his leg kicks. I think Vera definitely a striker that can end a fight although he hasn’t done so recently (with the stated exception) as you illustrated very effectively.

I give Vera the edge when it comes to striking on the feet and give him the edge on the ground submissions. However I give Jones the edge every where else mainly due to his creativity. Many people think that the better striker/BJJ artist will always win the fight but but between each strike and submission attempt lies 90% of the time spent in the octagon, this is where JJ’s strengths lies not to mention his striking seems to be very unorthodox and effective.

But I’m a fan of both so I’ll enjoy it either way.

by holdin_ropes on Mar 8, 2010 7:47 PM EST up reply actions

let me just say this...

Put Vera in a fight with Bonnar or Hamill and he’ll look pretty creative too. Also, he’s had some tough fights as of late, and got screwed by the judges/refs.

It smells like shit in here

by Nokimono on Mar 8, 2010 8:39 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed Puck, and agreed with your post below.

Vera has good stand-up, but Jones has looked better on the feet recently. Nothing Vera has done in a long time would lead me to believe Jones isn’t going to wreck him. Whether or not his two kicks hurt Randy, he only landed two. That’s not going to cut it, and Randy isn’t nearly as dangerous or dynamic on the feet as Bones is. Vera’s getting smoked.

BONES WOULD SMASH JARDINE AND KOUTURE IN THE SAME NIGHT!!!

LMAO!!! MR. DOUBLE DIGIT LOSS MAN KOUTURE??? LISTEN FELLAS, BONES IS ONE OF THE FEW ATHLETES TODAY NOT MAKING MILLIONS PLAYING ONE OF THE THREE OR FOUR (FOR THOSE WHO LIKE HOCKEY) MAJOR SPORTS… GAME PLANS ARE KOUTURES STRONGEST ASSETS AT THIS POINT IN HIS KAREER AND THAT MY FRIENDS WILL GET HIM NOWHERE FAST AGAINST MR. BONES..! BONES WILL BLOW HIM AWAY!!!

Jones quickness and power combination will be like nothing Vera has seen

Vera has had the reach advantage in almost all his fights and something he won’t have in this one with Vera standing 6’3" and a 78" reach he will be facing the 6’4" Jones with a 85" reach! With Jones being faster and more explosive than Vera I have a hard time visioning Vera will be able to handle Jones in any way. Vera has not beat a top fighter since Mir, Mir at the time was not at the top of his game and having many personal issues including alcoholism. Now Vera is a tough challenger but I put him in the same class as Jardine who by the way beat Vera by decision. This could set up a rematch for Vera vs. Jardine loser might get their walking papers and a exciting fight between two of the top LHW prospect fighters Jones vs. Bader.

Jeez,

Does Bones have 85 reach? Woah, that must be akin to skyscrapers reach. If he does prevail with the W, I’d like to see him get a step up in competition. Someone like Lil Nog or Shogun

by Apocacryptic on Mar 8, 2010 2:54 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, Timmay had an 86’ inch reach if I remember correctly. Jones has freaskishly long arms.

Lil Nog or Shogun are too big a jump. The kid is young, he doesn’t need his confidence shattered by an elite veteran.

If the UFC are looking to build him up more, give him Forrest. Otherwise Bader (battle of top young prospects) or Thiago Silva… if Rashad wasn’t a teammate that would be a great test for him.

couldn’t agree more with you Puck….add my name to the list of guys that say Vera HAS NO CHANCE in this fight.

I don't know about know chance

But if both fighters come out with their A game and Jones A game will be much improved you would think I can’t see Vera getting Jones in any real trouble but Vera is a step up in calibure and some fighters do not take well their first time to ral struggle and if Vera happens to give Jones any kind of trouble I think he has the determination to push himself through but we won’t know for sure until he is tested.

I think it's a good fight by Jones getting the UD

Brendan is a better wrestler than Bonnar IMO so I don’t think we will see crazy greco skills from Jones. Vera also just got experience in dealing with Randy’s same skills.

I think it will be chess game in the striking department with both guys struggling to find the right distance. Lots of clinching and seperating I think.

I got jones by UD but it will be exciting because between all the hugging and letting go I do expect lots of explosive creative strikes

I want Ricardo Arona to sign with the UFC and his first fight should be James Toney. This is a win win scenario for MMA

I think if either guy gets into mount or top position on the ground

Jones has better finishing tools. Vera will have to sharpen his subs.

Well....

No doubt Brandon can probably out wrestle Bonner, but is he a better wrestler than Hamill? I thnk Jones can hang with Vera in that dept, he was handling Hamill like a ragdoll.

I’m just SOOOO on the Jon Jones train! I think it started because I bet a lot of money on him in his UFC debut after reading about him and won a bet with 3-1 odds. From there he has just been too freakin’ impressive!

To top it off he has some personality, I met the guy and got a pic with him and my wife and to pose for the photo he pretended him was diving into her wheelchair. It’s a great pic!

I always liked Vera too, but I’m in the group that thinks the money changed him. He doesn’t go for the kill anymore……

I guess it's perspective....

But I see it as "he injured: Matt Hamill and I give him full credit for it, not that Matt Hamill “got injured” during the fight.

And yeah I saw him fight Randy, but all I saw was a couple of 1 kick wonders that almost got him a TKO. I didn’t see anything that made me say “wow, look at Vera’s ground game”

However, I also have Jones winning this one. The kid’s just phenominal. Vera will once again have a dissappointing loss on his record. He just can’t seem to hang with the top competition.

seeing this quote made me realize

Brandon Vera is main eventing. Really??? Vera a main event fighter? I didn’t think much about it, but this weak quote to hype a main event really made it sink in, he’s the MAIN Event? An exception against Randy, ok, but again he is in the main event, it’s just not right when it sinks in. This guy is in no way a main event fighter, the matchup is good but neither guy is a marquee name- Jones not yet anyways and Vera not ever.

Jones and JDS are two of the fastest rising stars in MMA and both are on this card

Vera and GG are in need of a win badly to stay relavant in both their divisions and should add a little more excitement and we will also get to see Kongo and Paul in a decent stand up war. Should be a great card!

by Puck Head on Mar 8, 2010 1:46 PM EST up reply actions

I can't wait, every match should be good

and I am looking forward to this card. But Brandon Vera is NOT a main event worthy fighter, he has done nothing worthy in years except frustrate viewers who watch him and let down fans who believe in him. The card is well booked, and free at that, but Vera does not deserve this.

by theCloser on Mar 8, 2010 2:14 PM EST up reply actions

I agree

Vera is the Main Event ???? It is a decent card over all and i will watch it but nothing you could do or say would convince me that Vera should be headlining any card free or not. He’s gotten by on his past for how long now. He dropped weight classes and then has had loss after loss and excuse after excuse.

Jon Jones better make sure he is still enrolled into community college, because he’s getting chumped in this one. Hype. That’s all Jon Jones is.

I used to like vera when he used to back up some of his talk, If he loses this fight I wouldnt be suprised to see the ufc let him go either that or they will give him a new contract as the official gater keeper at 205, thank God stephen Bonner has an anylyst job because veras about to take his gatekeeper role

IF YA WATCHED ANY OF VERA’S INTERVIEWS FOR THIS FIGHT HE LOOKS LIKE A GUY TRYING TO KONVINCE HIMSELF THAT HE HAS A KHANCE… HE’S SAYING HE WILL BE GOING OLD SCHOOL MT, NO HEAD MOVEMENT… YEA, GO HEAD AND SIT YA HEAD RIGHT THERE 4 FOR BONES AND HE GOING TO PUT AN ELBOW RIGHT THROUGH IT..! THEN VERA IS SAYING HE WILL SUB BONES IF THE FIGHT GOES TO THE GROUND… YEA, THE FIGHT WILL GO TO THE GROUND IF MR. BONES WANTS IT TO AND YOU (VERA) WILL EITHER BE BLEEDING FROM THE FACE OR UNCONSCIOUS SHORTLOY THERE AFTER… ASK DA DEF WRESTLER BOUT BONES TAKEDOWNS AND GNP… VERA KNOWS BONES IS THE MORE POWERFUL STRIKER AND IS IN ANOTHER LEAGUE WITH HIS WRESTLING… BONES BY DEVESTATING MORTAL KOMBAT FINISHING MOVE LATE IN THE 2ND RND!!! Vera just knows to talk tough

Since his hiadus from the UFC he has been a shell of his former self. He’s not as explosive or taking as many chances. Can you believe this guy was the most hype fighter in the HW division at a point everyone thought the sky was the limit for this guy. With that said JONES is what VERA was and MORE. If this KID stays aggressive and doesnt change his style We’ll see him REVOLUTIONIZE the sport. Greg JAckson is going to bring out the bEST in JOn JOnes… CANT WAIT TO SEE HIM FIGHT!

Brandon's got a ton of talent

But he talks too much. The only “truth” he’s told is that his wife would beat up Kim Couture.

I hope he comes to fight. He’s got his hands full with JBJ. I hope we see a ready Vera.
