Anderson Silva: 'Vitor Belfort was never my friend'

Belfort-silva_medium

Props: Tatame.com

Quoteworthy:

“First thing, he (Belfort) was never my friend. Second, a fight is fight. I’m here to fight and whoever is better prepared will win and one of us will lose. I’d be upset if I had to face Rodrigo, Rogerio, Feijao, Lyoto or even Wanderlei or Shogun, but Vitor? He’s just another opponent like everyone else."

Taken from an article that wasn’t published due to the cancellation of their UFC 112 fight in Abu Dhabi, Anderson Silva reveals that he and Victor Belfort  were never "friends" despite training together at Team Black House. Things became tense after the UFC put them face-to-face back in January to promote the April 10 event but now with "The Phenom" on the shelf due to injury they won't have an opportunity to settle their differences inside the Octagon ... yet.

I don't think Andy sounds Mad

I think he was just basically saying it’s all business but he would have had a more difficult time acception a fight with other countrymen he is has a better relationship.

I have no clue about the days they were both at Black House. Maybe Soares knows.

Anderson became a true brother of Nogueira’s, what is easily understandable for their support for Spider after the guy departures from Chute Boxe. Anderson used to say he would never fight Paulo Filho when the Bullet was among the top middleweights in the world, Machida the same, Silva says he wondn’t face him, so what’s the problem with Vitor Belfort?

Well, now we hear him saying it’s all business but if we go back some months ago, we’ll find Anderson saying that, that wasn’t fair from Vitor accept that fight. For one reason Anderson got fucked with that fight.

I think wandy or Shogun would face Anderson if they had the chance but only time will tell Anderson needs to fight for the LHW belt in the future besides Belfort and maybe Sonnen he has nothing else to prove at MW.

For REAL

Dana’s gonna have to put this guy in solitary confinement before he makes any more “friends”. Seems like all it takes is for a top contender to shake his hand and that’s one more matchup off the table for Zuffa. Dana needs to put his foot down and nip this shit in the bud.

by (shonuff) on Mar 9, 2010 12:39 AM EST up reply actions

This seems a little odd

Contradicting ideas of how good of friends they are, Vitor seems to think they are good friends, Silva not so much. Not really sure what to make of it really, but it wouldn’t be an issue if Vitor was saying the same things. I don’t know, maybe this goes back to a Brazilian rivalry we here in the states are not aware of? Can anyone on this site from Brazil tell us who the more popular fighter in their home country is? Or if there is a regional or camp rivalry that goes back…..Or if there is nothing to this at all and we are making to much of it. I would like to hear from our Brazilian friends on this one.

by domino effect on Mar 8, 2010 2:13 PM EST reply actions

Both are popular, domino effect. Spider has his own team, X-Gym, where he trains with Rafael Feijao (sparring) and Rogerao (conditioning coach) among other athletes. The Spider also supports Nogueiras brother when their schedule fits. I don’t think there’s another person besides Anderson to explain their rivalry.

"Once Flamengo, Flamengo until die"

by Eduardo Cruz on Mar 8, 2010 2:31 PM EST up reply actions

Vitor can be friends with guys he fights

He has no problem with that. But for Silva, the fact that Vitor would fight him is a betrayal. “Yeah, me and Vitor go waaay back….what?…what’d he say?…..the bitch wants my belt!?!…he said he’d fight me for it!?!…Oh HELL no!…We were never friends!…I didn’t even know that was his sister when I married her!”

by (shonuff) on Mar 9, 2010 12:49 AM EST up reply actions

It’s wierd. If Anderson Silva had his way, like Shogun, they both mentioned that they would prefer to NOT to face fellow Brazilians. Silva seems to be really emotional when it comes to fighting his countrymen. Shogun publicly stated that Wanderlei is the only fighter he refuses to face in a match. We already know Anderson Silva has a long laundry list of fighters he doesn’t care to face.

Note, this unpublished statement is pretty consistent with what he has said in the past about his relationship with Belfort. Not really a big deal. On another note, Vitor has said on two occasions that he likes Silva and considers him a friend. It’s just a fight.

who the hell did Silva fight before he left Brazil?

did they have to import opponents just for him? That’s just assinine. Can you imagine if the Americans refused to fight other Americans? Brazil is an MMA superpower, one of the Big 3. Its absurd for a fighter from any of those countries to think he can avoid fighting countrymen.

Japan

I’m talking of numbers of great fighters and homes of great organizations. Japan hasn’t had a lot of TOP-3 guys, but they’re a major world center for MMA and account for a huge percentage of Mid-level fighters.

I’d probably round out the Top 5 with Dutch and Canadians, but they don’t come close to producing the number of fighters or the big platforms that US, Brazil, and Japan do.

This post depresses me...

I really wanted to see them fight. It would have been a stand up classic. Vitor was reaching the peak of his career before the injury (even though its claimed he fought with the injury past 2 fights). I think it may happen if Anderson defeats Maia and Sonnen which he should

WORD!!!

Dana needs to put that in the hiring contract. The “You-will-fight-whomever-we-damn-well-tell-you-to-fight-or-you-can-take-your-pampered-ass-to-Strikeforce.” clause ought to be in every fighter’s contract.

Andy vs Belfort

I really wanted to go to this fight, i even took off work!!! War Vitor

by stunt on Mar 8, 2010 10:01 PM EST reply actions

I doubt this fight will ever happen...

History has shown that Vitor is weird. He’ll probably come back from injury and fight a non-title fight, end up losing, make excuses, and then fade away again for a while. I think the only reason they gave him a shot in the first place was because of a lack of contenders. All he’s done lately is KO a past his prime Franklin, and a one dimensional Lindland. The UFC knew Hendo was leaving due to contract disputes, and (as much as it pains me to say it) Maia got his ass handed to him by Nate. So they’ve got Nate all set to go and tear up Sonnen while Silva is on the shelf, but then he gets destroyed by a superior wrestler. As much as I’d hate to see it, I think Maia gets KO’d quickly by Ando. I’m rooting for Maia, but I think he’ll get KO’d while going for the TD. His TD game is suspect, aside from pulling guard, but I don’t think he wants to do that against Ando. I pray that fight isn’t another Silva vs. Leites. I hope to see Shogun beat Lyoto (he got robbed the first time), and then Anderson more up to fight Shogun in one of the greatest fights ever made.

Damn Andy can't win with you lot

Either he’s a fight ducker because he won’t fight those guys that he’s loyal to, including the twins that saved his career and his best friend in the sport, all of whom aren’t in his weight class anyway, yet now that he’s focused on fighting Vitor who was talking a bit of shit saying that Andy was scared only to pull out with an injury that he knew that he had before he took the fight he’s a dick. What do you want him to do?
