WEC 47 medical suspensions and injuries for 'Bowles vs Cruz'
The Ohio Athletic Commission (OAC) today issued its list of medical suspensions for the combatants who participated in the WEC 47: "Bowles vs. Cruz" event which took place last Saturday (March 6) from The Nationwide Arena in Columbus.
MMAmania.com confirmed the suspensions with OAC Executive Director Bernie Profato earlier today. And with several of the bouts ending via TKO stoppage, there were quite a few fighters who were flagged follow up visits with their doctors.
Chief among them are Brian Bowles (hand injury) — who failed to answer the bell in the third round against Dominick Cruz — and Miguel Torres (forehead laceration) -- who suffered what Profato called "One of the worst cuts we've ever seen" after being split open by Joseph Benavidez.
But that's not all.
Here is the complete list of WEC 47 injuries and their medical instructions:
Brian Bowles: Suspended indefinitely (hand injury) unless cleared by an orthopedic doctor.
Miguel Torres: Suspended indefinitely (forehead laceration) unless cleared by a surgeon.
Chad Mendes: Suspended sixty days (cut).
Danny Castillo: Suspended sixty days for precautionary reasons.
Courtney Buck: Suspended sixty days for precautionary reasons.
Bendy Casimir: Suspended sixty days for precautionary reasons.
Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases.

Interesting to see Cruz missing from the list
MMAmania posted video of Cruz saying that he fought with a broken hand, too — and even said he’d have to have his hand looked at by a doctor before he could speak on any future fights. Well, I guess his hand wasn’t injured after all.
It’s funny: my wife and I had originally thought that Bowles pulling out because of a hand injury seems like a non-loss, but when Cruz said he injured his hand too, we reversed our position. With this revelation, now we’re back to “a non-loss” championship exchange.
He was clearly down 2 rounds to 0. A loss no matter how you look at it.
But now, he lost and looks like a pussy to some people because the majority of fighters (everyone outside of Varner) fight thru broken hands.
Torres: Suspended until you can no longer see his skull thru his forehead.

No Point.
What’s the point to continue the fight when your hand is broken? Who cares if some people will think you’re a pussy. These fighters aren’t getting paid much for these fights so it’s not worth it to continue knowing you’re gonna get your ass kicked for 3 more rounds. Better to call it quits than getting more unnecessary ass whopping and looking confused in the ring. Besides, even though Bowles was the former champ but he isn’t popular like Faber to continue to duke it out to the end when your hand is broken to save his image of being called a “pussy”.
You missed the point.

A “non-loss”? It was clear that Bowles was the loser of that fight and Cruz was the winner. I’ve never seen a doctor come in and stop a fight between rounds due to a broken hand. The fight is stopped because the fighter with the broken hand gives up. It was WAAAAY more obvious that Urijah broke his hand against Brown than it was that Bowles broke his. The announcers didn’t even know it. How come the doctor never stopped that fight between rounds?? I clearly think the stoppage was due to what Bowles said to the doctor.

Last night I thougth, "Hmmm... maybe elbows to a down opponent isn't so good."
After that nasty forehead gash, I started thinking that maybe Strikeforce rules aren’t so bad after all. Strikeforce doesn’t allow elbows to a down opponent.
question
I havent gotten a chance to see it in slow motion, but was benavidez’ elbow coming on a straight down trajectory? Thats a bad fuking cut man…
not if you're asking if it was a 12 to 6 elbow
he did the standard chicken wing elbow motion, though he was postured up which gave it kind of a vertical trajectory
Goldie: "Michael Jordan-esque in his grappling skills is Travis Lutter."
Rogan: "No, no he's not. No."
