Juanito Ibarra: James Toney should fight Kimbo Slice -- then the winner of Chuck Liddell vs Tito Ortiz
Props: Bleacher Report
Quoteworthy:
"We get along real well. He’s a great student. He considers me a teacher. Hopefully this chemistry that we have can carry us to a title in MMA. James Toney will fight anybody. It’s up to us to help him figure things out. What I would like to see and what his manager would like to see … Kimbo Slice. It makes sense. The weight factor makes sense. Maybe a 220 [lbs.] fight somewhere in there. Two guys who have great names. I would love to see that fight …I think that’s a great opponent … hopefully the UFC would consider something like that. He’s said it all over the Internet. He calls him Simba. He says he wanted Simba Slice. I’d like to get him down to 205 and fight the winner of a Chuck and Tito. Fights with Kimbo Slice and he goes on to fight the winner of a Chuck and Tito fight …I think it would sell and I think it would be a hell of a fight."
Newly employed MMA advisor Juanito Ibarra maps out the future of his latest acquisition, famed heavyweight boxer James Toney. UFC President Dana White shocked the MMA community on March 3 when he confirmed the signing of "Lights Out," and as of yet does not have specific plans for his debut. It should be noted however, that the UFC website has taken down the scheduled match-up between Slice and fellow TUF 10 fighter Matt Mitrione booked for UFC 113 in Montreal. Coincidence? Or is Zuffa planning a major money fight between the two superstar sluggers?

I dont think Dana would let that happen yet
He isnt done milking Kimbo & he hasn’t even started milking Toney.
Zuffa should change the promotions name to DanaXC

I don't know...
This seems like a Brock situation to me. Toss him in the deep end and see if he floats.
I say make him cut to 205
He has fought well below that in the past. Put him against Jardine at 205, see how he likes getting leg kicked!
i think juanitos plan is a warm up fight so he gets used to cutting weight (remember hes old now) so a fight with kimbo at 220 actually i think is a tougher fight for him than a lot of other guys, kimbo arguably has the best boxing at that weightclass and is a moneymaking fight for dana
i would personally rather see a brendan schaub or paul buentello than kimbo and let them bring kimbo up slowly with TUF caliber fighters and toney slowly creep down to 205 and possibly 185 if he wants idk how flabby he is or his weight and body fat %

LOL holy shit “Kimbo has arguably the best boxing at that weight class” Are you serious?

Randy Murders
Boy Randy u stepped in it on that Kimbo boxing comment… 1st… which weight class ru refering to kimbo best boxer in hvwt? or 205lbs? Kimbo’s boxing is the best thing about him, but he’s certainly not the best in either 205lbs or hvwt. Ru saying Kimbo’s boxing is better than Jacksons or A. Silva or better than Dos Santos or Kongo’s… U just didn’t think that out before u wrote it…lol…U’d better retract that n’ chalk it up to an ’’’OOOOPS MY BAD"
"Best boxing?" You, sir, are a fucking retard
best boxing… rofl…
not many of them are technically great boxers all kickboxers, kimbo from a technical standpoint isnt a terrible boxer he moves pretty good, and doesnt go for just big bombs though he has some nasty power, i didnt say he was technically the best p4p fighter but look at the standup in HW
sure jds has looked good so far but takes quite a few shots, as does nog, brock i mean come on seriously he has shit standup, nog? hes a punching bag, cain takes a lot of punches, mir knows one combo, and kongo is inconsistent and not as good with his hands hes more of a leg kick fighter, i didnt say heavyweight had great boxers in it but technical standpoint kimbo is up there he just has such a bad hatred on him and such a terrible ground game that people wanna take him down
roy nelson wanted nothing to do with kimbo standing yet stood with everyone else? he even stood with arlovski for longer think im an idiot all you want kimbo will prove me right your opinions are yours, mine are mine

Reply with +1 if you agree! With Toney-Kimbo both guys in the fight are suspect and it’s closer to the freak show again. If Toney wants to be a legitimate MMA figher he has to fight some legitimate opponent!

I dont think Dana will feed him to the sharks in his first fight
He would probably give him a first fight against someone who wants to stand and bang… cue Kimbo if he defeats or even loses to Meathead. Maybe Pat Barry, Gilbert Yvel, Cro Cop and then eventually the elite wrestlers
lol
now you’re just being contrarian!
Toney is already signed!

Yeah, I was wondering too..
in all the years that I’ve watched boxing(though I completely made a 180-degree turn when I started on MMA), I have never watched a single Toney fight…

Same concept as Canseco, Toney wants $$$. Toney is a HOF'er in boxing, why would he want to do MMA at such a late stage? A good guess would be $$$.

Whats the diference if its about money or not?
As long as Toney comes into the fight in shape are ready to go at it, why is his motivation an issue? Are these guys not professional fighters? They reason they fight is to make money.
by ShowMeYourJits on Mar 4, 2010 2:46 PM EST up reply actions
Why is motivation an issue? A past his prime boxer who openly mocks MMA before he signs a deal. An MLB pariah who owes $$$ to the IRS. Business practices notwithstanding, I would say that the integrity of MMA has alot to do with it.

I’m going to enjoy the fights, this poitical BS on MMA is going nowhere. Oh Toney said this and that now he’s signed boo hoo. are you a MMA fan or a WWF fan? Judge a fighter by the way they fight not by the way they act.

Actually, Puck Head, I was watching boxing back in the late 70's and early 80's because I grew up with it. I know Toney's persona and his comments are to sell fights. I think you are belaboring the obvious. I get it but I don't agree with it.

IF...
Toney takes it seriously, then he deserves the respect that any other fighter should get, perhaps more because he has shown a significant skill level in his respective art. IMO he should get the benefit of the doubt before we all judge him.
by ShowMeYourJits on Mar 4, 2010 3:15 PM EST up reply actions
I would agree with your point more in this specific situation if Toney did not pop off at the mouth in regards to MMA. Not a good start to getting a benefit of the doubt. That's a big IF.

I don't really see the problem here...
James Toney is coming in as one of the best boxers in the world; albiet past his prime but still has accolades to his name that would humble a lot of pro athletes. Given his noteriety/personality maybe people are looking at the negative side of the media aspect. However, no one can say the guys not a fighter; if he’s a one dimensional boxer than eventually he’ll lose; but it’s not like he hasn’t earned at least a chance. The guys won boxing titles in 6 different weight classes, if anything he’s coming in more deserving than a lot of guys.

Why wouldn't he throw him to the sharks???
#1. Toney has done nothing but insult him and the UFC, made a mockery out of the whole thing.
#2. He called him a ho, did he not??
#3. If Dana is really taking Toney seriously and thinks he is for real, and he has won world titles in boxing, wouldn’t you want to make sure you have a mixed martial artist ready to tear Toney apart in 30 secs?? Dana and his BS about ‘Ten Year Plans’ and taking over the world with MMA, what is the point if you have an overweight, middle aged boxer come in, make a mockery of your sport, KO one of your guys and for them to turn around and say I told you MMA ain’t shit!

I wouldn't fault Dana for giving Toney a fight or two.
Why is it such an issue if he comes in and doesn’t fight a top level guy immediately? Granted he doesn’t have the timeline for build up the way an Anthony Johnson does or Todd Duffee, but its his first mma fight. Giving him a monster right off the bat would be just as rediculous imo.

No contests 2.
I say let JDS kick his ass and make him STFU and learn some respect for MMA’st

Becuase thats a boxing record.
Not an mma record. I know Brock went straight to the head of the line, but I think thats the exception, not the rule. Ishii isn’t fighting top of the line guys yet and he’s a judo gold medalist. Not even the top jiu jitsu guys go straight to the head of the line.
I dont know why this needs to be about the “respect of MMA”. Let Toney show he deserves to be in the sport and he is taking it seriously. If he is not, even a low lvl fighter will destroy him.

this could be a good fight for Kimbo
Kimbo’s knee will never be the same again he can’t take many leg kicks & Tooney won’t be able to throw a leg kick for shit. Granted he may end up KOing Kimbo but he would recover from that & people would pay to see him fight again. Tooney however if he loses will disappear & no one will give a shit about him & if he wins Dana can feed him to one of the animals at 205 any of the top 10 fighters in that division would snap him in two
Kimbo, Maynard, toney and Walker
Are all great for MMA rgardless what Dana says about them. MMA is for fighters at all levels and if they help gain exposure for the sport because of their background great!! Are you really going to take advice from Dana on anything the competition does?

Kyle Maynard-the guy who fought once and had to have special rules made up for him is good for MMA?

No shit. Maynard vs. able-bodied fighter is a mismatch that won’t be sanctioned anywhere outside of Mexico. Maynard vs. another handitarded fighter is just cheap comedy. Of course, it would probably make Sarah Palin’s head explode, so there could be some good to come of that.
