UFC Fight Night 21 bonuses and awards for 'Florian vs Gomi' on Spike TV

UFC Fight Night 21: "Florian vs. Gomi" from the Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, N.C., has officially wrapped, which means that it’s time for those select fighters who went above and beyond in their respective fights to get a little extra grease for their efforts.

To the tune of $30,000 each.

The promotion dished out its standard post-fight monetary bonuses to four fighters on the card. And it should not surprise you which combatants are leaving the "Tar Heel" with a little extra green.

In addition to their base salaries, the UFC awarded lightweight brawlers Ross Pearson and Dennis Siver with "Fight of the Night" for their action-packed, three-round war that set the tone for the televised main card.

Roy "Big Country" Nelson kept the momentum rolling with a huge finish, literally, of the 6'11" Stefan Struve to earn "Knockout of the Night." It wasn't a clean KO, but it was certainly an impressive stoppage -- he was nearly a foot shorter than "Sky Scraper."

And last but not least, Kenny Florian earned "Submission of the Night" for dousing the flames of the "Fireball Kid" Takanori Gomi in the main event of the evening.

Before sinking in the textbook rear naked choke in round three, Florian frustrated and outboxed the former Pride FC champion for the entire fight. When the lightweight fight eventually hit the floor, it was literally over in a matter of seconds.

Utter domination.

Here are the special fight bonuses for UFC Fight Night 21:

Star-divide

Fight of the Night — Ross Pearson vs. Dennis Siver
Submission of the Night — Kenny Florian
Knockout of the Night — Roy Nelson

Again, each fighter received $30,000 extra for their performances in addition to their respective base salaries, which we will pass along as soon as possible.

I don’t agree with the bonuses being half the size as on the last PPV (they were 60k i believe). Why should fighters fight on fight night cards if this is the case when they could just as easily be fighting on a PPV card? I guess they do it because the fight nights bring in less revenue but it’s a pretty clear incentive to hold off for a PPV card if you are on contention to win one of those bonuses.

I agree to an extent . . .

I would like to see the bonuses be more on par with those of a PPV event, but they often have the televised portion consisting of guys that might be on the undercard of other events. At least with the main and co. main events, there’s no way Florian vs. Gomi and Nelson vs. Struve would be headlining a PPV card. So in that respect I think it’s still a great opportunity for those fighters because it gives them a chance to showcase their skills and gain mainstream recognition adding to their marketability.

by TheGreg on Apr 1, 2010 3:26 AM EDT up reply actions

true but u can still win a bonus on the undercard.

Brazilian fighters > American fighters

Not just american fighters

i can name an equally dominant non-brazillian to every brazillian out there

There are fantastic Brazilians in mma and even more non-brazillians that are just as skilled.

yeah, but Brasil is where most of the best mma fighters come from, they are more about skill in Brasil then they are in all other countries, just like in soccer.

Gomi is past his best days the UFC knows that and i know that and therefore he was brought in to lose.

Quarry is one of the worst standup fighters in mma, zero skill/no defense with some power and a good chin, let him fight Jardine to determine the worst ever.

Go hard, today. Can't worry 'bout the past cause that was yesterday.

by RoBerto. on Apr 1, 2010 2:04 AM EDT up reply actions

brasil has bundles of great fighters

But the sport is far from “dominated by Brazilians.”

Gomi is not the fireball kid of yesteryear but is still a great addition to the ufc. Gomi vs fisher/guillard/tibua/stout

I knew quarry was in for it tonight, but I like him and think there are plenty good fights for him still. Quarry vs leben/grove/ or anthony johnson when he finally wisens up at moves to mw!

Pearson/siver was great. Siver really impressed me. He is a muscle-packed beast. Those high kicks were crazy, esp for his height and stance when throwing them.

Siver/sherk

I do believe brazilians dominate mma.

Just look at Machida, AS, Shogun, Nog bros, JDS (new but becoming great), Wanderlei, Alves, Belfort, thiago Silva, Paulo (young but very skilled), the Gracie family and many others. Some of these guys are beginning to pass their prime but in their time they were great. Also, others may not be champions but are always contenders and tough fights. If there ever was a tournament of country vs country, my money is on Brazil.

Siver’s kicks amaze me. The stance he has makes it difficult to believe he can throw those high kicks the way he does. If you’re his opponent you better study him and not fall asleep thinking he won’t throw kicks to the head.

i always thought so too

about the brazilians. it makes sense because they’ve been doing “mma” as a sport there much longer than the rest of the world, so it’ll take awhile for other countries to catch up.

Olympics

There is something that is country vs country it’s called the olympics. If mma was ever sanction by the olympics I would think USA would get the most medals.

Rashad, Jackson, Couture, Mir, Carwin, Velasquez

Liddell, Ortiz, Griffin, Jones, St.Pierre, Lesnar….yeah, it’s definitely all about Brazil.

I agree, I like him as well, but I think he’s close to done. He looks softer in appearance, not as defined as he used to, is 38, had hardly any fight in him at all, copped the same punch time after time. I think he’s done. But as I said, I like the guy and a fight with Leben would be good.

Royyyyyyyyyyy

I said it all along there is no way in hell Struve wins this. The 22 year old has no business being in the octagon with Nelson tonight and was basically a sacrificial lamb.

Great performance by Nelson, bring on Mir or Kongo, he will smash both!

Lesnar > [Carwin] ---> Lesnar > [Velasquez] ---> Lesnar > [JDS]
Overeem will NOT show up on May 15th! Mark my words. Sig stays til then.

by freenow82 on Apr 1, 2010 1:31 AM EDT reply actions

Roy was definitely a lock.

Struve’s stand up is vastly overrated and I saw Roy having the advantage wherever the fight took place. And I would love to see Nelson take on Mir or Kongo, just not in his next fight. I would prefer his next opponent be Ben Rothwell. I think that would be a great opportunity for Roy to avenge his loss to Rothwell (in a fight I thought he won). I would rather see Kongo vs. JDS and Mir vs. Gonzaga, with the winner of the latter fight facing the winner of Nelson and Rothwell.

by TheGreg on Apr 1, 2010 3:37 AM EDT up reply actions

Good match-ups, but Kong/Nelson, I would be ok with.

Several possible matchups that are good

For Roy, I personally like Mir the most, followed by Gonzaga. Mir mostly for the story line and lead in to the fight. Both are Vegas boys, Mir lost to Roy in a grappling match previously, Mir thinks he is some type of super hulk now and Roy has the worst physic in the UFC. Roy is funny, Mir thinks he is. It would be fun. Gonzaga 2nd choice. Rothwell…..I dont think he will get by Yvel, and I want to see an Yvel/Kongo rematch afterwards.

Let's see Roy Nelson vs. Junior Dos Santos

Nelson’s right up there nipping at the heels of the big 4. You know if he looked like Kimbo, Dana would say he’s the second coming and the next big thing.

I cant believe how wrong I was about tonights main event

Gomi has not evolved and the sort has passed him by if hes serious about trying to become the first japanese lw champ he better get to work and actually learn how to strike with at least some level of technicality

what a total disappointment I was sure he was ganna put kenny out. I was so looking forward to this fight and then what happened has happened, fuck it I hate this sport im finished with mma…………………. until april 10

by dia mette on Apr 1, 2010 3:48 AM EDT reply actions

lol.I can believe it buddy

Dont give up your tight grip on Gomis testicals yet…Kenny was just a little to much to soon for him.Where talking about a guy who finishes all opponents with the exception of huerta who he totally out classed and the champ. He got outclassed hands down…they should of gave him Guillard or a decent striker on his debut..totally unfair.

by The Legacy on Apr 1, 2010 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Well this card, as usual with the fight nights, turned out better than the PPV!

All the fights were interesting, (no Fitch/GSP – whatever you say that was a pretty dull fight – as much because Hardy offered no offence as anything), Pearson showing more and more that he could well sneak through the ranks but be a real threat – he’s not even been tested yet and he’s fighting ever-tougher opponents. Roy Nelson again proving people will underestimate him until he KO’s Lesnar and gets the belt ;) (joking a little there but he’s capable and should now be squeezing into the top 10 HW’s around, his grappling is top notch and he’s got KO power/technique… Not many other HW’s offer his all-round game)

by Jimrod on Apr 1, 2010 4:26 AM EDT reply actions

I hope they put Mir against Country Club for their next fight..

That’ll be a sick grudge match after what Roy did to Mir at Grapplers Quest years ago.

by The Legacy on Apr 1, 2010 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions

I wasn’t aware of that. It would add an element of intrigue anyway.

by Jackanapes on Apr 1, 2010 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, Nelson/Mir or Nelson/Gonzaga would mostly interest me.

by Jackanapes on Apr 1, 2010 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I like the Gonzaga match 2 that would be crazy..

But if you ever find the time you can check out the Nelson/Mir grapplers quest match on youtube…roy was like 30 ibs lighter than wat he is now,1 of the rare times in his life he could actually describe what his feet look like.

Haha.

Yeah, I might do that. Cheers.

But...

I’m pretty sure he’d “Clench up his buttcheeks and rip his dick off” in the words of Eddie Murphy ;)

That’s one fight I’m looking forward to, finally some decent competition for Brock rather than think-I’m-better-than-I-am Mir, washed up and undersized Randy or has-been/never-was Herring. Lesnar has gotta have had the easiest run to title in the history of the UFC.

by Jimrod on Apr 1, 2010 10:18 AM EDT up reply actions

I think I want Brock to win, though I don’t know why, but I’m picking Carwin. His stand-up is much better than Brock’s (from what we’ve seen of Brock’s anyway). It comes down to whether Brock can outmuscle him, and if he can’t, Brock might be going to sleep.

by Jackanapes on Apr 1, 2010 10:21 AM EDT up reply actions

I hope this win doesn't get florian another shot with BJ

It would be good if he went up against tyson, maynard, and/or nate before getting another shot ‘cause gomi hasn’t been that impressive as of late.

Maynard will allay your fears if he gets to fight Florian beforehand.

No he won't...

Kenny will beat a one dimensional fighter like Gray. The guy has been training with the best MMA wrestler there is…I don’t see Gray posing much of a problem. Gray has decent hands but nothing special. Kenny will pick him apart on the feet.

Finishes vs decisions, excitement vs boredom

That fight has to happen, Kenny has looked superb since the BJ defeat and deserves another top contender whilst Gray won’t get a title shot by decisioning guys not in the top 10, especially dodgy decisions like he got over Nate. I say give the winner the next title fight, or make the fight for the title if BJ gets bored of LW and decides to move up once he kills Frankie.

KenFlo will beat BJ

Before all the haters start to bash on me, think logically about this one. Kflo went into the BJ fight on like a year layoff. His timing was off and I think he got to anxious in the cage with him. His patience last night was really impressive to not get into a brawl with Gomi. Next time they fight.as long as it is the typical 3-4 months, he will beat the master. He’s got the potential, but BJ’s too good. He had nothing on BJ. He can’t beat him standing, he can’t beat him on the ground.

BJ 4 Life.

(Just kidding about the “BJ 4 Life” comment. I wanted to add some typical lame “tag” a typical lame BJ fan would do. But the first paragraph I still stand by.)

by Jackanapes on Apr 1, 2010 11:15 AM EDT up reply actions

Hahah

if he fights/beats gray in boston in august, then fights bj for the title end of the year show. I think kenny’s biggest problem was his lay off. Another year training with GSP and if his brother will shut up whie he is in the cage so his moves aren’t telegraphed, i think he has a great chance to win.

by Ron Burgandy on Apr 1, 2010 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions
