Vitor Belfort says he'll be back 'very soon' -- but will it be as number one contender?

Vitor-belfort_medium

Word on the Tweet is that UFC middleweight Vitor Belfort is progressing quite nicely with his physical therapy and is expecting to return to mixed martial arts action "very soon."

The Brazilian updated his health status using the popular social networking platform yesterday afternoon.

After a lingering shoulder injury became too much to bear, "The Phenom" was forced to withdraw from his UFC 112 middleweight title fight against reigning division champion Anderson Silva at the Concert Arena from Ferrari World, Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, scheduled for April 10.

It was the second time his bout with "The Spider" was postponed. They were initially penciled in to collide at UFC 108 earlier this year; however, minor elbow surgery for Silva postponed the all-Brazilian brawl until April.

Perhaps it wasn't meant to be -- Belfort even seemed uncomfortable with the quick title shot after a first round destruction of former 185-pound division champion Rich Franklin in a 195-pound catchweight fight back at UFC 103 on Sept. 19, 2009.

Star-divide

In fact, he admitted that Nate Marquardt more than likely deserved the nod over him. Nonetheless, he accepted the bout, twice, and both times the plans had to be scrapped.

He's expected to return at full strength later this year -- but where is his place in line?

Waiting patiently in the wings is Chael Sonnen, who utterly dominated Marquardt at UFC 109: "Relentless" just last month; however, he sustained a humongous gash on his forehead during the three-round unanimous decision win and was slapped with a lengthy medical suspension.

Sonnen, according to the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC), is not allowed to spar until March 24, giving him little time to truly prepare to battle a world class and dangerous opponent such as Silva. As a result, Demian Maia was called up to try and do what ten other UFC combatants couldn't -- defeat Anderson Silva.

Whether he does (or whether he doesn't) may not have much impact on the return of Belfort -- but it's hard to imagine the former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion returning after both surgery and a long layoff and wanting to go right into a title bout.

Then again, if he gets a tune-up match and loses, that could be even worse.

By the time he heals up and gets back into the gym it might just be about the same time that Chael Sonnen is firing on all cylinders. But would Sonnen agree to forgo a title opportunity to face Belfort if asked? Do these two need to battle for the right to get the next crack at the throne?

There's a lot of lingering questions that may hinge on the exact date of Vitor Belfort's return. Any Maniacs out there want to see him pick up right where he left off? Or is there a more deserving candidate?

Let's hear it.

Vitor vs Chael anyone?

I am the greatest, I said that even before I knew I was.

Yea that would be interesting.

It would only change if Vitor is unavailable until late in the end of the year and the UFC wants the Silva/Maia winner too fight again before that.

I do NOT want to see vitor fight sonnen

i think he will need a tune up fight before anderson but sonnen is a bad match up for him

by sac165 on Mar 3, 2010 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

totally agree

I am a HUGE Belfort fan. I actually don’t mind Sonnen lately to be honest. But I think this match up would be horrible for Belfort. If Sonnen dominated Marquardt, who has good wrestling and Jits, then it is very possible Belfort/Sonnen would look similar to Sonnen/Marquardt.

If anyone needs a refresher, go watch Dan Henderson vs. Vitor Belfort in Pride from a couple years ago…

Anderson needs to defend against SOMEONE. Right now there are four guys who all have a legitimate claim to a title shot. I don’t care who gets it, as long as Open Soares allows Silva to put the belt up.

whoa whoa whoa

So you guys are all ‘hardcore vitor fans’ and were saying he’ll beat Andy, but Chael is a bad match up for him cause he risks losing?

Doesn’t that by default make Chael the best in the division? Or are you guys blinded by Andy hatred so much you believed Vitor can beat him?

I think you guys should revamp your thoughts.

huh?

I said I am a fan of Vitor Belfort. Where does it say that I think he would beat Anderson Silva and/or not Chael Sonnen?

I said I was a Vitor fan and that Chael would be a bad match-up for him. Vitor hasn’t had success against wrestlers such as Randy Couture and Dan Henderson. Chael Sonnen is a great wrestler which presents a bad match-up for Vitor. I never said him and Sonnen should NOT fight, I said its a bad match-up for Vitor. Implying “bad” doesn’t mean it shouldn’t happen, it means that if you were to put a discipline against Vitor that would have a better than average success rate, it would be a great wrestler, such as Chael.

Next time read the post fully and more thoroughly before putting words in peoples’ mouths, so to speak.

Are you kidding?

I’d sell my step mom to see that fight! Opening bids at five dollars. Do I hear 7.50?

FUCK THE TUNE UP

he should have the choice of fighting esp. since Anderson only has a few matches left on his contract and is talking always about retiring so let Vitor right back at him straight away unless he think he needs a tune up but yea i think Chael would be a terrible match yup for him!

No matter Belfort’s healing up, guys. He’s out of combat for months and will probabley ask for a tune-up fight before fighting. It’ll take almost a year.

VITOR VS NATE

What an amazing fight that would be. Does Vitor get his shot back or does Nate fight himself back into the the title hunt.

vitor vs nate

i would much rather see this match-up

Bas Rutten: He has a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Stephen Quadros: Yes, well many of the fighters have a black belt.
Bas Rutten: Yes, but in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu you cant buy your belt like in say, Tae Kwon Do.
Stephen Quadros: Do you have any belts?
Bas Rutten: I have a brown belt in Tae Kwon Do.

chael needs time to work his striking?

all he needs is some time to work his cardio, get a little wrasslin in and he is good to go, he doesn’t any sparring

I Just want 2 see vitor in action already !

Depends on what happens in Silva/Maia...

…but I’d say he’s probably lost his spot to Chael. Would’ve preferred Vitor/Anderson all things considered, but I think Chael will be cleared to fight and train sooner, and after his win over Nate and all the accompanying trash talk directed toward Silva, I can’t see the UFC not wanting to pull the trigger on that. Even I want to see it. And Vitor never seemed all that keen on fighting Silva anyway.

vitor vs wand and/or vitor vs bisping

vitor should tune up with bisping then rematch wand then get after Silva

If Vitor Vs Sonnen happens ...

I see Vitor winning that. Linland and Franklin are also good wrestlers, yet he tore them a new one. Vitor’s strength is waiting for his opponent to make the move a counter attack like a cobra. That is not what Nate did. He just went right into the takedown

by Apocacryptic on Mar 3, 2010 5:28 PM EST reply actions

Vetor

vetor should still be number 1 contender hes ganna come out great and him vs. anderson silva is ganna be the best fight they can put on at middle wieght

by dude1 on Mar 3, 2010 5:28 PM EST reply actions

Vitor's most likely will fight another name before Anderson

He himself said he’d like to have a few fights under his belt before he got a title shot. Plus, after a long time off due to an injury, it’d be unwise to just get thrown into the cage with someone of Silva’s caliber. That being said, I’d love to see Vitor land a flush flurry on Silva’s chin and smash the spider.

However, if Dana has anything to say about it……Vitor may once again get the title oppertunity before he wants it

by mutedvoicebox on Mar 3, 2010 5:56 PM EST reply actions

Yeah

Virot cant get away with a title shot after all this, either Sonnen or Marquardt will get him

by theworldismine on Mar 3, 2010 6:03 PM EST reply actions

Please NO!

Vitor has a hell of a time with wrestlers!!! Once some one gets a clinch on him and just outgrinds him… he loses his aggression and confidence. :| BELFORT vs BELCHER WOULD BE A GOOD TUNE UP!!!

by el gwapito on Mar 3, 2010 10:10 PM EST reply actions

chael will fight anderson 1st

Chael said he has been promised the anderson vs mia winner. So when Vitor comes back he will probably get a title shot at whoever has it.
My hope is Wanderlei Silva can win against Akiyama and then KO Chael after Chael loses to Anderson.

More of ufc’s disappointment, why do I watch this anymore?
If your too retarded to not train so hard that you get injured, you should be chucked to the curb like a promiscuous women. I’m so SICK of this crap. What measures has UFC management taken to prevent this? Anything? How many great cards have turned to “Yeah, I guess Illl order it” cards from this sort of crap? Seriously, Thats the best they can come up with? How about this, they give us three or four free cards all in a row for all these injuries and half-assed cards. Do SOMETHING to make it up to the fans!!

What you think if they sign Gegard Mousasi and have him fight Anderson at 195!!! ??
