Another title run? Chuck Liddell shares his plans for the future

Chuck-liddell-tuf-11_medium

During today’s UFC media conference call, former light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell talked about his return to fighting and his experience coaching opposite Tito Ortiz on "The Ultimate Fighter (TUF)." The 11th Season 11 premieres Wednesday, March 31 on Spike TV at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Liddell won the UFC light heavyweight world title on his second of three fights against Randy Çouture and would go on to defend the title four consecutive times, including once against Ortiz. All of his title victories came by way of vicious (T)KO.

But having gone 1-4 since his reign of terror — albeit it to a "who’s who" of top 10 world-ranked light heavyweights — Liddell was urged into retirement by UFC president Dana White, who saw his close friend succumb to three brutal knockouts in those five fights.

Liddell admits he needed time off to rest from so many knockouts, saying, "I thought I was getting hurt by shots that shouldn’t hurt me."

Star-divide

While confirming White is taking his return on a fight-by-fight basis, Liddell is optimistic he is here to stay, referring to his upcoming fight against Ortiz as a "warm-up fight" throughout the call.

"I want to make another run at the title. If I can do it, I’m guessing it’s going to take another couple fights. I’m going to have to beat Tito, then beat a couple more guys, then hopefully a title shot after that. One more shot at going out on top. I can still beat anybody in the world. So I just want one more shot at it."

Liddell says he always knew he’d return to fight one day and that he first started to realize how much he missed training for competition during his time as a contestant on "Dancing with the Stars."

Thanks to training with the TUF competitors and to his renewed focus on his upcoming opponent, Liddell is already in fighting shape, weighing around 220 pounds — lighter than he walked around as champion. He sounded a bit like his old self when he reflected on what he missed the most about his fighting career and what’s driving him back to the cage.

"I love the game, I love fighting. I love trying to prove that I’m the best in the world. I love the sport, I love what I’m doing. I really do love being out in the ring fighting people."

Now back on TUF for his second stint as coach, Liddell noticed the contestants of today are more well-rounded as mixed martial artists than their predecessors. He confirmed that he was pursued about the coaching opportunity by White — which made sense to "The Iceman" because it was a means to build his return to the cage — but that he asked that they not use Ortiz as his coaching opponent.

Request denied.

The two former champions have a long, turbulent history, which has often become personal. Liddell complained of lies he attributes to Ortiz, saying, "I don’t like the guy. … If you listen to him, he took me off the street, taught me how to fight, and I betrayed him," referring to the 10 weeks they spent as training partners.

Ortiz recently called out former heavyweight champion Mark Coleman for allegedly insulting his girlfriend, former pornstar Jenna Jameson, which Liddell called preposterous because Ortiz has used personal attacks for years to get under his opponents’ skin.

"Tito complaining that people talking about personal life things is insane. I remember back when he was going to fight Vitor (Belfort), before he fought Vitor, he said in an interview, ‘I don’t date white trash bitches like Chuck (does),’ on a radio interview. Now the sad thing about that was he was talking about ‘Star Magazine’ that said I was dating Juliette Lewis, which obviously wasn’t true. She’s a nice person, but we weren’t dating. I met her a couple of times … But he was referring to her, he said, when I confronted him about it and warned him not to do that again or I’d beat him in his own living room. I told him not to talk about my family ever again or I’d beat him in his own living room, and he apologized in front of all of his friends."

Apology aside, that hasn’t stopped Ortiz from recently misinforming media that he is "proud of Chuck" for coming clean and battling alcoholism, which he had supposedly struggled with for years. All lies in order to get "The Iceman" heated during their first week of TUF taping, according to Chuck, who says Ortiz’s strategy has backfired by providing more fuel for the fire.

"Now he pissed me off enough so that now instead of training for a tune-up fight, I’m training to hurt him. I’m training to go out there and beat him. He did the worst thing he coulda done — he motivated me to train." Liddell also commented on rumors that Ortiz will not be his opponent when he returns to the cage and that he will instead be fighting former middleweight champion Rich Franklin.

"I’ve heard the rumors, of course, but from what I understand, (Tito) has signed to fight and is actually going to show up and get the beating that he’s supposed to get. I think I earned it, having to put up with him for seven weeks. … I’ve heard the rumors too, and I hope that’s not true, because I think I earned the right to punch him."

Fans will have to wait and see. TUF kicks things off Wednesday.

Good luck with that Chuck.

It would be a miracle. I will be watching and cheering every step of he way.

I've been saying this for a while...

Chuck could fight and have a chance at the best fighters if he just fought in a well rounded manner. He doesn’t kick but knows how to for fear of being taken down and he knows how to grapple but again seems to be petrified of fighting on the ground other than a quick takedown to score points. This day and age it is easy for guys to game plan for a guy that is only going to box.

by Edgecrusher71 on Mar 29, 2010 8:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed.

Chuck can do it but his counterpunching days have to be over. Or he will be over. He’s just not as quick as he used to be and can’t take a punch like he used to. Maybe that last one will have improved since his time off. But if I was him I wouldn’t stand there and try to find out. What have we learned in MMA? Wrestling wins championships. And Chuck is a great wrestler. Great in the clinch. Still has power. Has karate experience so should do well against Machida who he will have to face in a title run weather The Dragon defeats Shogun or not. Chuck has the tools and he looks like he’s in the best shape he’s been in in a long time. But he is too damn stubborn. He won’t change his camp (could you imagine chuck with Greg Jackson?!) and I hate to say it but I don’t think he’ll change his game plan.

Do not. I repeat, do not, go to mma-core.com. I made the mistake of watching a couple UFC 108 bouts on there and I am still trying to get all the viruses of my computer. Ridiculous! You've been warned.

both are done and don’t have a hope in hell of making a title run

I have a ton of respect for what Chuck has done

but for all the reasons you listed in your post he has no hope of being a force again.

ie. slow, no chin, won’t change gameplan/camp plus a year older (over 40 now) and a long layoff

The sport has evolved, Chuck hasn’t…….thanks for the memories, it’s time to hang em up

by UtterBalls on Mar 30, 2010 5:50 AM EDT up reply actions

Mostly because

he has no chin and is way slower.. I dont buy into the sport Evolving. HOW? did guys grow three arms? Last I check it was still MMA and striking is still a huge part. Dont really know what you guys are getting at with that arguement… Its not like in the old days with Tank Abott and them… The same guys that Chuck has beat still have careers and really havent changed that much.

CHalk this one up to Dimished skills period

Wayne Gretsky, Michael Jordan, Joe Montana, Muhammed Ali, FEDOR EMELIANKO

by The real ZACK on Mar 30, 2010 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Chuck Is done

Main reason he has never had good striking defense. Chuck has pretty much always been hit at will period. Add that to his dimiished speed and lack of chin… chuck is pretty much done with. Also he hasnt really KO anyone in a while so theres question marks on that also especially since Wanderlei took some of his best shots.

sorry you Chuck Lovers but just because he thinks he can make a title run doesnt mean you have to believe it. HAHAHA

Agree

They are both done, and the reason is that neither fighter is changing their game. Chuck, just continues to fight like Chuck, and that will not work any more. Tito was the king of ground and pound, but the sport has advanced too much for Tito to be relevant.

I like what both of these fighters have done for the sport, but I wish that the UFC would spend the time, and money on growing new superstars. If the sport is to keep growing new super stars is what it needs.

Currently there are popular fighters, but none that were as popular as Chuck when he was at the top (Brock is getting there, but I still think he has to prove himself). Chuck is recognizable by everyone.

Got to see Chuck this weekend...

He was kind of a dick. I always thought he was a nice guy but it really didn’t seem that way in person. Whatever, I would still be rooting for him but realistically he doesn’t have a chance.

I hate seeing anyone bash on the UFC's greats

that said, Chuck draws fire for mentioning title shots like anyone else would if they were 1/4 in their last 4 fights. I really wish he’d stop focusing on the title and really just talk only about what he has in front of him. These guys get hit in the head for a living though people, so cut the guy some slack.

by cosa7189 on Mar 29, 2010 8:32 PM EDT reply actions

To be fair

he was talking about a run at the title not a title shot. He mentioned at least three more fights first. I think that is realistic. Now weather or not he can win those fights is a whole nother argument…

Chuck has to fight at least two more times.

He won’t go out with a loss to Tito.
Tito would claim he’s the one that “…retired chuck Liddell” to the end of his days.
Chuck’s not done yet.

Chuck vs. Anderson silva I still want 2 see that fight!

Hopefully if chuck can get a couple wins it will happen. I know no1 thinks chuck has a chance in hell 2 beat AS but it’s just a fight I always wanted 2 see.

Nice to see Chuck motivated...

…though I’d prefer he save any talk of trying to become a contender again for after his fight w/ Ortiz. Despite his recent performances, I still think Chuck can beat Ortiz (again), but if he doesn’t, or can’t beat him as definitively as he has before, then that may be all the indication he needs that it’s time to hang up the gloves.

he doesnt need it.

He’ll TKO Tito, then smash Rampage in a rematch, then a quick KO over Shogun, and he’s right in there pushin the pace against Lyoto.

he still has it

Chuck beat Rashad in round one and was winning the fight till he got smoked and he beat Jardine in my opinion because he nearly KO’d him in round one. His loss to Rampage was bad but the Shogun loss is what did it. Chuck could beat Tito again, maybe Bader, Griffin, Franklin….no way he beats Machida though.

chuck & tito should enjoy every minute they have in the lime light while it lasts with this reality show and eventual 3rd fight

because they are both on thier last legg I dont care that tito is only 35 hes on borrowed time as well

the gut

I just rewatch all his fights and I’ve never been a big fan. He’s just way too one dimensional for any significant run at the title.

His best weapons are much too slow.

i think Chuck will beat Tito

but that’s probably all he do unless they give him some easy fights but the UFC don’t do easy fights so he’ll get KO’d again if he wants to go on a high maybe retire after the Tito fight

dont do easy fights in the UFC?

Anderson Silva has a habit of making things look easy

Forrest is a former LHW champ & at the time Irvin was no push over. there has been what appears to be easy fights but i don’t think it was the intention at the time

Man, chuck thinks these new breed of LHW are the same one dimentional ground fighters that he used to beat during his “reign of terror.” Chucks in for a surprise, oh wait I guess he must’ve forgotten after being KTFO 3 times.

If Chuck wants to comeback then he needs to do the following:

- Change training camps to a camp that knows how to game plan…Couture, Jackson…
- Also he needs to rely on his wrestling more than his striking now.
- Go on ebay and look for a titanium chin.
