the thing that he was talking about that he couldn't mention yet

I guarantee you is a rule that he will implement that if you’re asked to fight your training camp mate you will. Plain and freakin’ simple. Seriously, how bad do you want that title?

by Dion03 on Mar 28, 2010 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions

They should......

THey should put it in their contracts saying if you want a title shot then you have to face title contenders whether teammates or not!!!! THen we would see Silva vs Machida, and who doesn’t want to see that fight? But then again would they not go all out?

by taporsna on Mar 28, 2010 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions

They'll go all out if they like winning.

They should force training partners to fight if it has direct belt implications. I don’t really need to see Bones Jones vs. Rashad yet, but if they are both one step away from a title, they have to fight.

I have a feeling GSP's next opponent is going to be Shields is what he couldn't mention

And this is why Fitch isn’t going to get the next shot and will have to battle for the Next shot against the winner of the KOS fight.

Have sheilds fight the winner of Kos/Semtex for a shot at GSP

I think GSP isn`t going to wait for these guys to fight twice, Shields fights in less than a month

I bet we hear a announcement he is signed right after as well his first fight will be announced against GSP.

Win or lose his serious competition would be in the UFC...

I mean the only other sensible fight at SF would be Jacare, which I would love to see. Nick Diaz leaves that division alone because of Jake. Moussais also fights at 185 right? I guess that would also be a great fight. Although I think Moussasi’s stand up would be to much for Jake. Jake belongs at 170#’s though.

As far as Kos and Fitch go, business is business and all friendship aside if you want the title you fight whomever is in front of you. I think Dana said it best when Fitch said “that will never happen.” and Dana rebuttled with, “Then you don’t want Title shot that bad!”

Wow Fitch's fight was a snoozer

There were several times he could have ended the fight if he had just thrown a flurry of punches at Saunders. He’s obviously a skilled fighter but I guess he doesnt care about finishing fights.

So if Fitch gets a title shot and grinds out a win somehow, and if Koschek were to be number 1 contender would they not fight each other? Or Vice versa. Say Kos somehow becomes champ and Fitch is #1 contender would they not fight?

I want to see him beat a top 5 guy period, decisions over Gono, Saunders and Pierce hardly justifies a title shot. His only notable win was a boring and close decision over Thiago. Fitch has done nothing since getting destroyed by GSP to earn a rematch.

GSP has finished 3 of his last 7...

and 2 of the fighters that he didn’t finished got complelty abused for 5 rounds (Alves and Fitch). Kos and Hardy I think are the 2 that faired the best against him and Kos was only a 3 rounder (no telling what may have happened with another 2 rounds). I think Kos is more explosive as a wrestler then Fitch and I like that he is willing to put it all on the line, take a chance going for the win, even though it has caused him to lose in the past. Like you said below as well GSP is fighting top 5 comp. most of the time. There is a reason they are top 5 and at 170# the division has been the same for a long time. The guys are elite, tough, and are going to hold their rankings for years to come. GSP is just so far ahead of other fighters. I am one that personally feels he needs to step up and hit up the MW division. He has cleared it out and I am not all that interested in rematches and guys who are barely top 10 fighters. That is just my opinion though.

I agree, I’m tired of hearing it. People go to camps and now everyone at their camp is instantly their blood brother no way they’d fight. It’s BS. Granted Fitch and Kos have been together a long time but what are you in MMA for? to build friendships, or win titles?

by getrawbc on Mar 28, 2010 11:46 AM EDT reply actions

How do you benfit from beating a fighter you see everyday?

You would get nothing from a win to help you for your title shot. You lose your main training partner, because your in there to kill him practically.

It's a tough call, but I see Fitch's point of view

These guys have built eachother by spending countless hours in the gym. It’s tough to go in their and fight your friend with the intention of destroying him. Even GSP said he would never fight a friend.

Tito interviewing Babalu: "I want to tell me what you see, let's go ahead and see by the fight, what you saw, in the ring."

It doesn't make sense and wouldn't be a fight

How hard is that to understand, especially when they’re supposed to be 5-10 guys to keep you busy in your division. But Dana wants to fuk with you instead, by giving undeserving shots to people that he personally likes, because they’ll help out the market more, not because they earned it.

by Crackkbaby on Mar 28, 2010 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I also see Fitch's POV...

…as well as Black House, and other guys who train together being hesitant to fight each other. It’s not an easy situation at all. Sure, it’s a job and it’s just business, but trying to make it completely not prsonal goes out the window when you get hit in the face.

But in this specific situation, they had to have realized that w/ three guys from the same camp in the same weight division, that a scenario where they would have to fight might crop up. Fitch loses the ability to credibly complain about not getting the next title shot if he refuses to fight another top contender in Kos(if he beats Daley), and vice versa.

by Hardcase on Mar 28, 2010 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions

The problem is though you have...

3 guys from the same camp in the top 10. Two of those guys have been holding 2 of the top 5 spots for the last couple of years with Fitch and Kos. So at some point, to truly hash out this weight class they have to fight. What if by some chance GSP loses to Fitch or GSP moves up and relinquishes the title. If Kos or Fitch get the Belt is the other just going to sit back and not compete? Why keep fighting at that point? The ultimate goal is the belt. If Fitch gets it what is Kos going to fight for, to be number 2. Yay, I am number 2, I can never be number 1 though because my teamate is number 1! One of these guys should make a move up to MW then if they refuse to fight each other. That is what Shields and Diaz have done.

Fitch is notorious for grinding out boring decision wins so a fight against fellow wrestler Kos when neither even want to fight each other doesn’t appeal to me at all. It’ll be a moot point anyway when Semtex kos the fraggle.

Hardy proved how tough he was last night.

Both the armbar and Kimura still make me wince, but other than that, GSP did the exact same thing Fitch did last night. Took down his opponent at will, did very little on the ground, and easily won.

Why not a rematch? Fitch did not expect to get outwrestled in the first match by GSP. Coming in with a different gameplan may help him. Not saying it will, but creating “#1 contenders” like Hardy lost its luster for me after watching how easily GSP won that fight. Fitch and Kos are the only guys in the division right now who even have a cahnce against that type of grappling.

It's 10-8 when you basically tear a guys arm off and dominate him for 5 minutes.

It would be the same as him almost finishing him with strikes. Most/all of those rounds could have been 10-8.

GSP didn’t take Hardy down and do nothing with it. He almost broke both arms. Fitch laid on Ben and did NOTHING. No big punches, no passing, no sub attempts, no punches thrown on the feet. Nothing. Those two fights were nothing alike.

jay, I am done arguing with you over this. I will watch GSP/Fitch II, as will you.

I believe it will be more entertaining than last night’s fight because Fitch at least has a chance of a reversal or an escape or actually coming close to stopping even one takedown.

You don’t. So be it.

And one DEEP submission attempt does not make a round 10-8, even when compounded with the little bit of groundstrikes that actually landed, Did you see Hardy’s face? It was cleaner than Alves’ and Fitch’s. I didn’t see one 10-8 round last night, let alone two.

10-8s

Hey Ulf M,

Maybe the judge that scored the 10-8 rounds felt Hardy did nothing offensive in those rounds. Most of the fight was GSP dominating Hardy. I remember one round where Hardy was trying to get up from all fours, and GSP just dragged him back down.

GSP is a smart fighter. He is doing what he has to so he can stay the champion and be injury free. He is playing the odds, and in Hardy’s case, GSP’s odds on the ground were much better then standing.

He would get punched out again. No need to see any of that again. You don’t get rematches unless someone thinks something has changed since last time, or last time was a fluke. This fight wouldn’t fit under either criteria.

enough with the exaggeration. While I agree with you on the people who boo and whine about a guy like Fitch wrestling his opponent to death, because it in my opinion is the worst thing that fans do. I guess they all have like 30 second attention spans and can’t pay attention to any action that takes more time than that.

Look Saunders is a tall, lanky 170. Outwrestling a wrestling product like Fitch isn’t going to be Saunders’ forte. But he did have a very good guard and if Fitch were to get over aggressive with his positioning Saunders would’ve exploded up to his feet.

I was surprised in the lack of urgency by Saunders by the latter half of the second to get off with his striking arsenal but when you fight a guy like Fitch, I guess it’s easier said then done.

Saunders is just 26, took this fight on two days notice and I expect him to learn immensely from this fight and be better in the future because of it.

…has indicated that he’s an improved fighter, like he claims. While purely ranking-wise he’s probably the #1 contender in the UFC, I have no problem w/ seeing him get passed over for a title shot.

By who?

If Semtex doesn’t KTFO Kos, there is no other credible challenger that has not already been dismantled by GSP. Unless Shields actually beats Dan, but pigs don’t fly, so that is not happening.

Shields is a better opponent than Fitch, even if he loses to Dan

Especially if he stops a couple Dan take downs. Fitch has absolutely nothing to offer GSP, it has been proven. Move on.

There is no way to spin Shields getting a title shot if he loses to Hendo. Then he would have to get through either Fitch or Kos to get a shot at GSP, and I don’t see that happening either.

He’s still kick ass at LW even though he was beaten by the best at WW. Well Shields is a WW, losing at MW to Dan Henderson doesn’t prove he would lose at WW to GSP.

I think Dana will go with the Kos/Daley winner...

…even if it’s Kos, maybe even to spite Fitch or sow dissension in the ranks, though he’d probably prefer a Daley win so he can feed GSP a fresh challenger. Problem is, there are really aren’t that many credible challengers for him left at WW right now. I don’t believe Fitch has any greater chance now than he did then against GSP. He probably has less, IMO. Only other credible opponent he hasn’t beaten yet is Shields, and if Jake loses to Hendo, they’ll have to take an extra fight or two to spin him as a contender.

by Hardcase on Mar 28, 2010 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

why not?

honestly. Fitch is the clear No. 2 welterweight in the world if Alves is out. He’s just so god-damned solid. The guy doesn’t make any mistakes. He beats everyone he’s supposed to. You just can’t argue with that.

Right now nobody else is truly ready to fight GSP. I mean I’d like to see them push Anthony Johnson harder then giving him guys like Burns and now Howard (potentially) or Ben Saunders but he proved he wasn’t ready yet.

Who you want to give him? Daley? I know the fight starts standing and all but if he doesn’t have some semblance of TD, his ass will be on the mat pretty damn quickly. Kos? GSP already thoroughly dominated that fool. Kampmann? If he can get healthy that might be interesting.

But until then there’s four months here at least where if you want to keep GSP busy — which I certainly do and would hope every fan would want to see instead of just 2 fights a year — give him Fitch at 115 in Vancouver. Makes sense to me. Neither of these guys are hurt.

lol, dude, Anderson is the 185 lb champion and until that changes there’s no need to force him to fight Machida. Besides, Machida’s belt is in so much jeopardy without Anderson in the mix. Shogun already beat him once, but the judges want him to prove it so we get another matchup. Then there’s Rampage who when he’s on his game mentally, he’s the best 205’er there is. Period. And a 22 yo Jon Jones who’s already scary as fuck. There’s no need to make your 185lb champion and probably best fighter on your roster upset.

I saw Fitch get desroyed for 25 minutes. I was impressed with his heart though, he wouldnt quit. I follwed his story in hopes he would comebaack as a better fighter. I knew he went to Thialand. Honestly, I would enjoy watching Fitch get his ass handed to him on a platter for 25 minutes. Unfortunately, GSP will reverse-Fitch him. Take him down, play it safe, move from guard to half-guard to side control to mount and back to guard just to prove he can.

The Pierce fight proved how bad Fitchs striking is

He’s nowhere near as good in the feet and only has one win over a contender, 3 boring and irrelevant wins and no stoppages since getting a 25 minute beatdown from GSP. Unless he convincingly beats Alves or Semtex next then he shouldn’t get a rematch, decision wins over guys outside the top 10 doesn’t make you the top contender.

I watched ALL of Jon Fitch's fights post GSP...

And I was miserably bored during all of them. I don’t care how many weeks he’s spent in Thailand working on his striking. I understand and accept that he doesn’t possess any semblance of knockout power. However, when you aren’t making even the slightest attempt to finish your opponent by way of submission or taking a chance and expending a lot of energy to finish an opponent via GnP, then who give a flying f***k how much bs “improvement” he garnered in Thailand.

Fitch can whine about “fake fans” wanting to see blood and guts all he wants. He can say “a win is a win is a win”. But in professional sports, winning isn’t the only thing. People don’t pay $50 hard earned dollars to watch a lay and pray clinic or humpfest. That’s why you don’t see amateur NCAA wrestlers in college competing in PPV wrestling leagues. Because NO ONE wants to watch that.

If Fitch simply wants to grind out his sure-fire win and not take any chances, fine. But don’t expect the UFC to put a lot of marketing behind you and don’t expect to be given a title shot every four fights when you were demolished in the last matchup and have only lain on other men in all of your subsequent fights and decisioned ALL OF THEM.

Then you have the audacity to challenge the promoter who pays your f*****g bills and refuse to fight the other true top contender in the welterweight division while simultaneously bitching about how you aren’t getting your due? Give me a break.

I used to respect Jon “Human Blanket” Fitch before and right after the GSP fight. Now I think of him as a petulant child who always wants his own way and can’t accept that what he’s doing isn’t appealing to fans who buy fights to watch fights. Grow up, young man. Grow up.

Fitch isn’t the most exciting fighter to most people, I’ma fan of the guy so i’m not bored during the fights, I like wrestling and ground games. But he does show the same dominance in the ring as GSP, takin guys out of there game and controlling the pace of the fight. 12-1 is an amazing record, especially at that level of competition, I understand people want to see some fresh faces but look at the Hardy-GSP fight, all people are gonna do is complain when GSP takes em down and dominates them anyways.

Oh and the reasoning was for a dumb video game but that would have ment that Fitch would have had to pay to use his own name from then on. Dana is an idiot and ever since has hated Fitch cause he doesn’t take shit and isn’t a pussy. The crowd was being so ridiculous by even boo’ing Fitch when he was in the clinch throwing great knees. If you want stand up with no ground and clinch go watch a boxing bout everyone and take off the tapout shirts……there a lot more to mma then blood and pain.

As if Dana would force Machida or Silva to fight each other but I think the winner of Daley-Koscheck is gonna face the winner of Alves – Fitch and determine the #1 contender. Fitch wont fight koscheck he has too much respect for his teammates just like GSP.

I think what Dana couldn't mention was GSP's next opponent Shields

And Fitch and the winner of the KOS fight will need to fight for the next opportunity.

Machida is the champ at 205, Silva is the champ at 185. Why would he force them to fight? If they were the top contenders for the same title, then yes, but as of now they’re in different weight classes.

Dana's plan is clear to me

If Koscheck beats Daley he will set up Fitch v GSP. He wills end the contracts and make it public then it wil be all on fitch and Koscheck. Koscheck will do it he doesnt give shit. Koscheck could beat GSP and so could Daley but id give Kos the best shot

I was a fool to think Bisping had any chance against the Axe Murderer, and even more foolish to bet agaisnt the great Puck Head.

Daley isn’t well rounded enough for Gsp… Shields Owned him and Gsp would do the same.

Shields to ufc

Shields is coming to the ufc win or lose against hendo. Shields is pissed that all the ads and commercials promote only hendo and not him. He is also looking to get paid, and the ufc is willing to pay him. I heard form a very good source that indeed GSP will fight Shields. Winner of Kos and daley will fight fitch for next shot at gsp. So if it is kos, dana will make him fight fitch, if he wont paulo thiago will get the next shot9deserving or not. This is from a very reputable source.

Wasn't this a major point of the Ultimate fighter house?

Fighters are separated into two teams, but often times it’s two members of the same team that have to fight in the finals. And the teams don’t serve much of a purpose other then to create drama between coaches. This is what I love about MMA, no teams. It’s what for me makes MMA the PINNACLE of sport competition. The utilization of more skills then any other sport, and it’s one on one. But I do see it as a sport. And that means you act as sportsman. To say you won’t fight someone because he’s your friend is unsportsman like to me. Maybe the expression mixed martial arts isn’t as appropriate as say combat SPORTS, as it refers to it as a martial art and not a sports competition.
