UFC 111 bonuses and awards for 'St. Pierre vs Hardy' PPV fights

UFC 111: "St. Pierre vs. Hardy" from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, has officially wrapped, which means that it’s time for those select fighters who went above and beyond in their respective fights to get a little extra grease for their efforts.

To the tune of $65,000 each.

The promotion dished out its standard post-fight monetary bonuses to four out of the 20 fighters on the card. And it may not surprise you which combatants are leaving the "Garden State" with a little extra green.

In addition to their base salaries, the UFC awarded light heavyweight competitors Jared Hamman and Rodney Wallace "Fight of the Night" for their thrilling three rounds of undercard action.

While "Shonuff the Master" has dropped his second straight fight via unanimous decision, his crowd pleasing brawl with Hamman got him some face time at the end of the evening's pay-per-view.

And a nice fat check for 65k.

Representing the 155-pound weight class was the resurgent Kurt Pellegrino. "Batman" survived a submission scare of his own to come back and tap out Fabricio Camoes with his slick "Submission of the Night" that came via rear naked choke in the second round.

Also bringing home the proverbial bacon was current UFC heavyweight number one contender Shane Carwin. "The Engineer" made his return to the Octagon a memorable one, turning Frank Mir inside-out to grab "Knockout of the Night" after putting Mir on his butt in the first round.

Here are the special fight bonuses for UFC 111:

Star-divide

Fight of the Night — Jared Hamman vs. Rodney Wallace
Submission of the Night — Kurt Pellegrino
Knockout of the Night — Shane Carwin

Again, each fighter received $65,000 extra for their performances in addition to their respective base salaries, which we will pass along as soon as possible.

Hahaha! What Brock said was true though. It's a fake belt!

At Least Carwin is humble enough to realize it though...

All in all I was rather impressed by Brock actually being relativley respectful of Carwin and his win. He shook hands before and after they traded words. Nor did he really take any shots at him personally. I wonder if Brock’s dance with death toned him down a notch or maybe it was just Mir.

I'm not too sure about that comment.

Carwin and Brock have a similar style….which is anything goes. Both are wrestlers and both have power so it should be interesting.

Mir needs to STFU, retire, and become a commentator for the WEC.

Both of them are wrestlers with powerful hands. Brock has an edge in wrestling and Carwin has an edge in punching power. I think it could go either way.

a few quick thoughts

1) mirgloata should be executed

2) palhares should be suspended

3) I was wrong about mir, the HW belt will be owned by three fighters over the vext few years, carwin, lesnar, valasquez

4) gsp has become the most boring ufc champion

3) Include JDS. 4) I disagree. It was entertaining seeing him try to sub Hardy. Hardy is tough.

Good points

I definitely agree JDS should be in that picture. As for 4, I haven’t seen the fight yet, but GSP-Alves was a bit of a snoozer.

by Nyfeh on Mar 28, 2010 2:30 AM EDT up reply actions

JDS is WAY too small.

JDS is my favorite HW, but Brock has almost 60 lbs on him. Once he gets hold of him, he’ll swallow JDS.

He let go a second after the ref stepped in. Unfortunate that the other guy got hurt. That’s like saying Hendo should be suspended for dropping that 2nd bomb on Bisping.

Pelligrino/Comoes should have been FOTN

It was WAY more exciting than Hamman-Wallace
Wallace should’ve gotten “dumbass of the night” for repeatedly taking Hamman to the ground every time he wobbled the shit out of him on the feet. He was dominating the standup game and getting the worse end of the ground game, but he kept giving up his edge by taking it to the ground. STUPID!

Palhares totally screwed that guy’s leg up! Sheesh, give the guy a chance to tap before you rip all his tendons out!

I didn’t give Carwin much of a chance against Brock until tonight. Now that fight is looking to me like KIng Kong vs Godzilla and I have no clear favorite.

That ref let Frank Queer take way too many shots. When a guy is laying face down with his arms stretched out above his head, what the hell are you staring at? Mir wasn’t just not defending himself, he wasn’t even moving. He took 5 hard shots AFTER he was stretched out comotose. I hate Mir, but I don’t wanna watch the dude die! I hope he doesn’t have any brain damage! This is Karma coming back on him for what he said about wanting Brock to die in the octogon.

Hardy looked HUGE compared to GSP. I thought they looked about the same size at the weigh in, but tonight GSP looked like an average WW fighting a large MW. And what the hell is Hardy made of? Silly Putty? GSP had Hardy’s arm bent so far back he could scratch his ass with his own elbow. They should’ve warned Georges he’d be fighting freakin Reid Richards! WTH!

by OJR on Mar 28, 2010 2:40 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah, they really need to bring back the DRAW

Fighters should not get losses on their record for performances like that. It’s just not right. They should give “Finishing Bonuses” to anyone who finishes the fight, instead of only rewarding the so-called best KO and sub. If fighters knew for sure they were gonna make an extra 20-50 grand for finishing, they’d take more risks and not try to ride it to a stalemate. But a fight where both guys are active and going for it and back and forth pretty even, neither guy deserves a Loss based on a coin toss by the judges.

by (shonuff) on Mar 28, 2010 2:46 AM EDT up reply actions

20-50 grand isn't enough for GSP to take a big risk to win.

But a quarter of his pay is. They should only get paid a percentage for not finishing fights. They need to put an emphasis on stoppages.

by jay. on Mar 28, 2010 2:48 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah, it's different for headliners

For the poor bastards who are pulling 5-10 grand a fight, an extra 20 is HUGE, esp since they don’t know how soon they’ll get to fight again. But for the guys pulling a quarter mil, they’d have to up the stakes. But they should at least get a guaranteed bonus for finishes. Look at last week’s card…6 finishes in 11 fights, but normally only one of them would get a bonus. (props to UFC for giving 3 KOTNs). When a fighter sees a chance to finish, he shouldn’t have to wonder whether or not he’ll be rewarded for taking that risk depending on whether some other guy in another fight does something more impressive. If a guy goes above and beyond and makes it more exciting for the fans at the risk screwing up his resume/legacy, PAY HIM!

by (shonuff) on Mar 28, 2010 3:02 AM EDT up reply actions

No props to the UFC for giving three KOTN's, they still gave away the same amount of prize money

Instead of paying for SOTN, KOTN and 2 fighters FOTN They just paid for SOTN, KOTN, KOTN, KOTN. Same 4 winners.

They definitely need to start enticing people to finish fights.

they get that anyway if they win

The fighters can’t really control whether their finish will be a spectacular Higlight Reel that will leapfrog their career. They need a guarantee that if they risk positional advantage or getting in closer for a finish that it will be rewarded guaranteed, not only if it happens to be the best one of the night.

Mir vs Get the Fuck ouf of the UFC; Fitch vs Gorilla during mating season

Look at Mir’s record. Other than fighting those in the 3rd tier of the HW division, he is a non-factor.

Fitch – I’d rather watch two sloths mate as that would be more exciting than any of his recent fights. A gorilla would give him some humping competition.

C'mon Jay, you must admit that the GSP last night was disappointing

I’m a huge huge fan of GSP asd have been well before he was in the UFC but last night was a fight which was worse in my opinion than the first GSP/Serra fight where he lost. I thought he said that his loss would make him a better fighter and it did initially but now he just goes for a win in a very boring manner.

Bring back the GSP who first entered the UFC as that was the GSP that I remember. We know how good he is at wrestling……and he should have finished off Hardy much easier. I also blame his corner for giving stupid instructions on not mounting or taking his back until the last 30 seconds of the round. Listen to GSP in the final round when he is asking his corner whether he should mount Hardy before the mid-point of that round. It was like he was in a sparring match.

And, i LIKE how GSP stretched it out to five rounds. At least he gave jacka$$ the full 25 to show “how much better a fighter he is than GSP.” The ONLY thing GSP can do now is face Anderson Silva. They are the only opponents each other can face now.
Also, can Mir go away now. He’s been done for a year now. PLEASE GO AWAY!

YOU please go away

come back when you’re sober, Bro!
Hardy did far better than expected. Did a great job of avoiding the submissions, pulled off several reversals, and survived even when GSP did catch him in impossible spots. I thought Hardy did better than Fitch or Alves against GSP and I give him major props.

There are plenty of much better matches for Anderson than GSP. Anderson needs to keep his huge ass at LHW and fight the toughest division in the sport (most of whom are still smaller than him) and stop beating up on guys 40 lbs beneath him.

JDS vs. Mir makes more sense to me.

They can sell it easily enough, Mir talking about how he took out Kongo and then making some ridiculous comparison between Kongo and Cigano’s striking abilities.

I thought Mir would counterpunch Carwin and send him packing. I’m thrilled with the outcome, since I wasn’t all that enthused about watching Mir get Brocked again.

Also, I know it’s chic to say at the moment, but Carwin looked like a 265lb Randy Couture in this fight. Very impressive.

I was saying the same thing about Cain till he beat Nog. That was enough to secure him a shot, but I think JDS should fight Mir or some other top 5 (who?) He can’t just sit around for a year while Carwin and Cain get their shots and anyone else he could fight would be a big step below Mir, unless he fought Cain which would eliminate one of them as a contender, which Dana doesn’t want to do.

Hardy Did a Good Job

We all knew there was no way in hell he could defend the GSP takedown, but who would ever have thought that the highlights of the fight would be his two non-taps.

Yes, he was outclassed and didn’t let his hands go on his feet, but he showed serious fortitude by denying those subs and going the distance. He made some new fans. Sure, he can’t beat GSP, but who can? Hardy is going to be a handful for anyone else at the weight class. He should be proud of that gutsy performance against one of the P4P greats.

As much as I hate to admit it, Kos is the only guy who can even come close to giving GSP a run (not counting a BJ Penn pulling off the fight of his life) because he’s the only guy who can begin to deal with GSPs takedowns. And he’s got some power on his feet.
He may lose to Daley, but Daley would get schooled on the ground worse than Hardy.

The punchers chance just doesn’t work for GSP anymore. He doesn’t allow it.

by revjames on Mar 28, 2010 5:06 AM EDT reply actions   1 recs

The punchers chance just doesn’t work for GSP anymore. He doesn’t allow it.

And that, in my opinion, is the greatest compliment you can pay a fighter (or any athlete, really). He’s so good that he simply disallows whatever his opponents want to accomplish, and instead effectively attacks them where they are weakest.

There is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt.

by misterjonez on Mar 28, 2010 6:22 AM EDT up reply actions

So much for GSP beating people at where they are strongest like some of his fans were claiming *cough jay cough*, even GSP himself admitted that he doesn't do that

GSP is world class but he’s been playing it safe since the Serra loss. It’s a smart thing to do and is why he’s the greatest WW of all time but I don’t find it entertaining to watch. He’s such a world class MMAst that he can destroy people anywhere that he wants, which is why it’s disappointing that recently he’s not been finishing fights especially against one who, despite showing a ton of heart and grit, was clearly outclassed. GSP may be unbeatable at WW but I can’t say that I’m anticipating his next title defence.

He didn’t play it safe in the Hughes rematch or the Fitch fight. Those were two exciting fights….even the Penn fight was a good fight but last night was not good. Hardy is nowhere near the level where Penn, Alves, Fitch, or even Hughes (and that hurts to state that) are. I’d love to watch Hardy vs KOS next as KOS is stupid enough to stand up before he gets rocked but no way Hardy beats KOS.

Hardy's stand up is overrated because it's all he has and they needed to hype it

Kos has more KO power than Hardy and could probably finish him standing.

The stats are out

and they confirm what I expected, that Hardy didn’t land a single punch standing. On the feet, GSP hit him in the head 5 times and kicked him 5 times without taking a single shot! If that’s not getting schooled, I don’t know what is.

That's about the most sensible post I've read on here all week.

It used to be exciting to watch GSP fight.
Now, I’d much rather see “Bones” Jones.

i really really think

GSP could have snapped off him arm if he wanted to
i think the guy is a class act and wasnt going break the guys arm, cause he knew hardy wasnt taping for anything…

Godawful card... Carwin saved it

I was so fucking bored up to the Carwin Mir fight (as expected), fortunately Carwin delivered and so did Toquinho but then it was back to the humping lnp (that the card allready had had enough of) with GSP.

I forgive GSP though because he recognized his errors and apologized, but I truly fucking hate Fitch with every inch of my body.

By the way, I just can’t catch a break with my picks… Carwin Mir ended the way i picked Kongo Mir to end, that is Mir catching a punch or two and giving up and going into fetal position… but I was wrong there so I thought Mir had improved, but alas he did it in this fight instead…

And Bocek got robbed, typical.

by Lester The Pimp on Mar 28, 2010 9:22 AM EDT reply actions

Word, Bocek did get robbed!!!

His robbery was the highlite of the night for me. I thought the fights sucked except for Mir getting tuned in. I just cant believe they siad Millers name, honestly I thought they made amistake when they said Miller by UD. There has been a few signifigantly bad calls in the last two years and I think that this one tops the list. It also isnt garnishing that much attention because it was on the undercard which I also think is wrong. That call was so boxing to me, you have to think “fixed” when a call like that is made. I have a rotten taste in my mouth about MMA and the UFC after that. Im a life long fan that just doesnt know what to think anymore, that call was wrong, Bocek completely controlled, dominated or whatever you wan to call it that fight!!! Utterly discusted

by HEELHOOK on Mar 28, 2010 10:43 AM EDT up reply actions

How can you say that

The card didn’t look that great on paper, but most of the fights were exciting and suspenseful . We all knew the main event and Fitch fights were lopsided mismatches, but the rest of the evening was very entertaining.

by (shonuff) on Mar 28, 2010 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions

What?

Palhares delivered by not releasing a submission and possibly further injuring his opponent?? Pretty dumb comment.

I do agree Bocek got robbed on the decision.

New Breed Of Heavyweights

Mir thought because he took some expensive suppliments and did a few extra deadlifts he could be super calm and confident going into this fight and then BAM! Lights out. I feel sorry for any HW that has to fight Lesnar or Carwin. He made Mir look like a crash test dummy pinned against the cage!

GSP Should fight

by judopei on Mar 28, 2010 9:37 AM EDT reply actions

The thing that stuck out to me the most last night was

the UD they handed to Miller after getting schooled by Bocek for 3 straight rounds. WTF was that. I picked Bocek by 3rd rnd UD and was standing there with one hand in the air while they were about to not raise his hand. Myself and 8 others just went WTF when that decision was made. Miller controlled that fight for about 30 seconds in the 2nd. What a fucking joke that was, this decision has boxing written all over it.

by HEELHOOK on Mar 28, 2010 10:26 AM EDT reply actions

I was disappointed that George did rip Hardy's arm off.

GSP is to nice of a guy, I think anybody else in that position would have just broke his arm for not tapping. GSP couldve broke it twice, its not like we want to see guys get there arm or leg broke but come on now. Tap or Snap George, he shouldve ended that fight!!!

by HEELHOOK on Mar 28, 2010 10:35 AM EDT reply actions

I was yelling at the tv "TAKE THAT FUCKERS ARM HOME!"

For some reason everyone at my buddy’s house thought I was crazy.

lol we were all yelling it!!

GSP is to nice, ANYBODY ELSE WOULDVE BROKE THAT ARM!!! I really wanted GSP to finish that fight and he couldve by BRUTAL BROKEN ARM but he is to soft like that!! WAR GSP another just total domination.

by HEELHOOK on Mar 28, 2010 10:46 AM EDT up reply actions

That's just barbaric.

GSP already had the fight in the bag, so it wasn’t a matter of winning or losing. Why should he deliberately injur someone, but just for the pleasure of the bloodthirsty spectators! I applaud his restraint and humanity!

by (shonuff) on Mar 28, 2010 12:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Why would he take the chance of Hardy getting up and KOing him??

The fight is not over till its over. Shonuff your posts are usaully pretty good, Imsurprized at this one. Im not one of these new blood thirsty fans that just want to see a guy get KO’d, I would way rather see a good sub then a boxing match. My problem with GSP not breaking it is that Hardy couldve gotten up andf KO’d him. GSP couldve stopped/finished that fight and chose not to, I thought he lacked some pretty serious killer instinct last night.

by HEELHOOK on Mar 28, 2010 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Hardy wasn't gonna KO anybody

George had already felt him out on the feet and Hardy couldn’t land a single shot, and that was BEFORE George torqued the shit out of his shoulder. You really think Hardy was gonna have any speed or power AFTER those sub attempts? PLEASE!!!

by (shonuff) on Mar 28, 2010 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, I think Hardy couldve KO'D GSP with a shot after that.

Hardy hardly had a mark on him and looked pretty fresh after that fight.

by HEELHOOK on Mar 28, 2010 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions

He'd never land anything is what shonuff is saying. He wasn't fast enough to land a jab in the beginning of the fight

What makes you think he was ever going to land anything that could KO a guy that has never been KO’d? Dan Hardy is probably the worst fighter GSP has ever faced, nobody else has knocked GSP out but Dan Hardy was going to?

It was a stupid waste of a fight.

exactly, Jay

Hardy didn’t land a single punch from the feet. Not ONE! GSP hit him in the head 5 times and kicked him 5 more and he couldn’t get a single shot off.

I'm with you

I think he’s more a sportsman than that Aoki crap. No need to be breaking limbs.

by sudnvictory on Mar 29, 2010 12:28 AM EDT up reply actions

I've always thought.

I’ve always thought GSP was a boring fighter. Good, but boring.

I’d be impressed if he beat a guy at what he does best but he didn’t even try. His win column is more important to him than being dominate in all areas.

Hardy didn’t get his belt but he got his pride.

Hardy needs some takedown defense.

The only thing Hardy took from the fight last night was some serious jock rub on his obliques.

That and he has been mentally mauled. Now everyone knows how to fight this clown and Danass will only book fights that involve standup.

The Only Guys That Can Deal WIth GSP

Either need world class wrestling or world class jits in addition to being able to hurt GSP in the stand-up.

The only guys that come to mind that fit that pedigree are, in no particular order: Kos, Nick Diaz and BJ Penn.

Seeing as GSP has already beaten Kos and BJ, Diaz is the guy I’d most like to see him fight. BJ would take him down but at least he’d be a threat off his back and he is tough as nails.

Kos is the guy most likely to be able to deny the GSP takedown (or at least some of them) followed by BJ. And both have the potential to hurt him in the stand-up.

The thing with GSP is that he is also really good on his feet. He may not put himself in harms way a lot, but he still has the arsenal. Which is why a guy like Fitch will never beat him. It’s also why a ground wizard like Jake Shields won’t beat him either. GSP can use his wrestling to keep the fight standing when he has the decided edge there.

So, even though Kos has already lost to GSP and I’m not a huge fan of his, I do recognize that Kos went into that fight not focusing on his wrestling at all, thinking he’d have the edge there no matter what. If Kos gets back to his roots, we might see a fight where GSP doesn’t just ragdoll a guy all night with takedowns. We’ll see if Kos is smart enough not to mess with Daley’s stand-up and just put him on his back. If he does he will likely be next in line for GSP.

After that, it’s time to get Shield and Nick Diaz into the UFC. I know Dana likes Shields, but is probably wary of Diaz. Too bad, because he’s the guy I would most like to see in there with GSP.

Fitch has

Agreed, Reverend.

Nick Diaz is the most exciting fight out there right now for GSP, but I can’t blame Dana for not wanting to take on a media headache like that clown, who no-shows half his fights and loves weed more than keeping his job.
