UFC fighter bonuses and awards for 'Vera vs Jones' on Versus

Ufc81-bonus_medium

UFC on Versus 1: "Vera vs. Jones" from The 1STBANK Center in Broomfield, Colo., has officially wrapped, which means that it’s time for those select fighters who went above and beyond in their respective fights to get a little extra grease for their efforts.

To the tune of $50,000 each.

The promotion dished out its standard post-fight monetary bonuses, but there was nothing standard about how it selected the winners.

John Howard, Junior dos Santos and Jon Jones all earned "Knockout of the Night" honors for their respective finishes. And Clay Guida -- who hasn't stopped an opponent in nearly two years (Samy Schiavo) -- took home "Submission of the Night" for choking out Shanon Gugerty.

No fighters were awarded with "Fight of the Night;" however, that doesn't mean that there was any shortage of action ... just ask Daniel Roberts, Gabriel Gonzaga and Brandon Vera.

Ouch.

Here are the special fight bonuses for UFC on Versus 1: "Vera vs. Jones:"

Star-divide

  • Knockout(s) of the Night — John Howard, Junior dos Santos and Jon Jones
  • Submission of the Night — Clay Guida
  • Fight of the Night — N/A

Again, each fighter received $50,000 extra for their performances in addition to their respective base salaries, which we will pass along as soon as possible.

Dude, the ufc always builds off the old names with the new names.

Gonzaga loses to Desantos.
Vera loses to Jones.
Hughes loses to Alves
Liddel loses to Evans
Liddel loses to everyone and their grandma…and I’m going to bed now..

the ref in the howard/daniels fight should have been the one getting KO'd.

He stood half across the octagon not even realizing Daniels was out cold until the 2nd punch landed. rule #1 must be to stay close to the situation when the fighters are on the ground and rule #2 must be to look from the side not from behind the fighters.

he should be suspended for lifetime and knocked out for good measure.

that wasn’t the ref’s fault that was rampage punching even as the ref was grabbing onto him.

Yeah the fighters are trained to keep striking until the ref stops it and the ref has to be close when a fighter gets knocked down

Just like the GG and JDS fight the ref was close and ready to stop it as soon as GG was not defending.

nice to see fights get finished tonight

I kinda got excited when gg had jds down and almost took his back

jones proved tonight he is at the top of the food chain, he should only be fighting top 5 guys from now on same goes with JDS

Jones

Is only 22. AMAZING!

Future champ one day, 2-3 years, wow!

I like how humble, appreciative, and realistic he is. Spells great things for him and bad nights for his opponents.

Obviously he’s not ready to be thrown in with machida/shogun/rampage just yet but silva/evans/forrest/nog would all be good

I'm not afraid of dying, I'm a little bit scared of what comes after

try one year

he will probably face thiago silva next. his speed will be too much and easily defeat him. then after the machida/ rua second fight which machida is going to win would set up jones vs machida. +160 for jones and i will pounce on that and count my benjamins the next day. jones speed is too much for anybody. i can’t believe there would be any doubters any more. btw the same thing that happened to irvin is going to happen to rampage vs evans. another example of why a long layoff will be detrimental to your would be success. evans will beat rampage easily. only chance rampage would have is lucky punch in first 2 minutes. he will have no cardio and evans frustrates him in first round and then ktfo’d him or tko’s him in early second round.

I predicted Sakara to win for some time ago because he has always been a good boxer (which Irvin clearly isn’t) and it was an easy win, it had nothing to do with Irvin’s layoff just his poor skills.

i beg to differ and tito ortiz and chris horodezki are other examples. those two just came to me as .......

i wrote this post but there are many others who have had the same situation. i’m not taking anything away from sakara (decent fighter) but irvin was gone for 20 months?

yea but Tito lost the fight in the 3rd round because he was tired. Irvin lost in the first round because Alessio outboxed him, James have never been much of a boxer just a brawler.

you have got to be kidding rashad wins this easily. page has not fought in a long time.

he is very overweight and he is unmotivated. only chance he has got is quick ko and rashad knows this and will dance around for 2 minutes and then wait for the right time for the knockout or the takedown that leads to the tko. bank on it.

Rampage gets KO'd.

This fight was a no brainer, Sakara is way better fighter the Irvin. Im not sure why James has always had so much hype surrounding him he has never been better than average, maybe its the way he looks, I dont know!! Sakara was landing at will, it was just a matter of time!

Agreed

JDS is top of the food chain. His hands are so good that he will probably always keep the fight standing and if someone should take him down, he’ll scramble back to his feet ala Chuck Liddell. Don’t think we’ll see too much bjj from that guy.

by sudnvictory on Mar 22, 2010 1:45 AM EDT reply actions

one problem

JDS is WAY smaller than most of the division. He gives up 50 lbs to Lesnar and almost that much to Mir &Carwin. If you recall, old Chucko never fought anyone bigger than him. You just can’t give up 50 lbs to a world class wrestler and expect to be back on your feet anytime soon.

This is yet another example of why the UFC needs a CruiserWeight division that caps out around 230 lbs. A 60 lb weight division is ludicrous in today’s world where guys can be cutting from 285+ and still fast and with world class skills.

by (shonuff) on Mar 22, 2010 9:18 AM EDT up reply actions

i’d be more in favor of setting cruiserweight at 240 and bumping HW up to 275. although the names would probably need to change. 205 would be cruiser, 240 would be LHW and 275 would be HW

i was at the fightz tonight!!

and they were GREAT…except for a few… Duaine Ludwig broke hiz ankle in half attempting a take down…. Irvin got punched right in the eyeBALL…Eddie Bravo jumped on Big Nogs back and tried to put him a playful choke hold while walking back to the locker room from JDS’ fight….. pretty funny..

Aye

I wonder what Gonzaga and Vera will do now, both will never be champ – or even contender, so what do you do to motivate yourself… I guess the money helps but the UFC ain’t exactly the NFL when it comes to pay.

Sadly I’d like to think Gonzaga could grow a bigger heart and tougher chin as I kinda like him and his style, Vera on the other hand I couldn’t give a crap about – never liked him but don’t know why!

by Jimrod on Mar 22, 2010 7:41 AM EDT up reply actions

The name is funny.....

But I wouldn’t call him a can. He’s just a guy who never fought as good as he spoke of himself. Hate those guys that talk trash but can’t back it up.

by sudnvictory on Mar 23, 2010 12:01 AM EDT up reply actions

This card had potential!

Thought it would be awesome, JDS did not disappoint though. Vera and Irvin should both be cut for quiting after being hit in the face once, guys get pummelled in there, its not often you see a guy turtle after being hit in the face once regardless of were it is. Nice main event quitter!! I understand the eyeball shot but he was trying to pass it off as an eye poke.

by HEELHOOK on Mar 22, 2010 7:53 AM EDT reply actions

an elbow to the orbital bone i think would stop most people, cro cop did the same

from a jds uppercut to the orbital.

I get that,

you alwyas hear of guys orbitals getting broken, but you never hear about it until the next day and you think wow he had a broken face and kept fighting. Brandon Vera is a joke, he is not exciting to watch, he is average at best and will never be a factor, he needs to go. How does he get into main event fights? this wasnt his first but should definitly be his last!!!!

i agree completely but i think hes got 3 broken bones in his face lol

One of the best elbows that I have ever seen

And didn’t even split Vera open but the force and placement had his opponent quit on the spot. That’s an elbow of all elbows!

by sudnvictory on Mar 23, 2010 12:03 AM EDT up reply actions

went PERFECT in PICKS!!!

Several things were learned last night

1. Dos Santos is the truth and need the fight against Cain Velasquez no questions asked.

2. Jon JOnes needs to fight a top 5 guy. The LOSER of Machida- Shogun. Or Rashad Evans/ Rampage Jackson

3. Cheick Kongo is the worst. He will never challenge for a belt. Taking Buentello down really showed nothing. He should have tuffed it out and challenged himself to strike with Buentello.

jds and cain will be kept away imo. i wouldnt be surprised if jds fought kongo next.bones vs winner of lil nog/forrest next.

Kongo

didnt have to do anything other than stick to his game plan, yes striking with him may have entertained you more but he knew he could win on the ground so therefore did..dont think iv seen anyone quite from elbows to the thigh before

Anyone else Impressed

That Bones had the ability to eat two illegal up kicks.. the first one especially… and then keep going.

WOW… you can’t teach that or train that. Solid

I want Ricardo Arona to sign with the UFC and his first fight should be James Toney. This is a win win scenario for MMA

Yeah first time his chin has really been tested

What amazes me with Jones is not his offence ability for a young fighter but his defence, it’s top notch for a 22 year old!!

surprised me

…Though I was more surprised that the ref didn’t bother to stop them or even acknowledge the 2nd one and Rogan tried to pawn it off as a shoulder strike though it clearly went straight under his chin then slipped past following his neck to eventually glance the shoulder area.

guess i'd have to re watch to be certain but i thought both knees were on the ground

Similar to the 1st one was faulted for. Lol almost came across as the refs being sick of having 2 or 3 stops every round! The crowd, as was I, were getting a little restless.

I'm not 100% positive either but it appeared that he was on both feet

On Vera’s side Jones height in the mount on his knees is probally like others crouching hight wise.

The second upkick was legal but for nothing

The first upkick dazed jones but didnt seem to really do enough anyway. It showed that he does have a chin however. He was off his knees for the second one but it just added fuel to the fire fr the viscous elbow dropped on vera.

by Lavardi on Mar 22, 2010 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions

The first one was illegal, the other one (that hit him on the shoulder) wasnt!

Watched it 3 times today.

No knees down, standing on both feets = legal.

But yeah Jones is really good in every area of the sport and keeps getting better. Really entertaining dude to waach.

Glad to see more KOTN bonuses

There was no clear winner and on a night when 8 of 11 fights were finished and 6 of them in the First Round, it would be a shame for all those other guys to be excluded just because they were on the same card with other great KOs. I think THIS is the kind of thing the UFC needs to do to encourage more exciting fights. I say bring back the “Draw” for fights that are too close to call, but offer big “finishing bonuses” so fighters won’t stall and will know that taking risks will pay off.

Got all my picks right I think

Cept I may have chosen Irvin out of sheer stupidity…

Dos Santos as said needs to fight Velasquez

Jones looks really promising, and I believe should fight the winner of Griffin Nogueira for one more test.

Kongo sucks, anyone can take down Paul Buentello. Very disappointed in that fight.

Irivin should quit

by theworldismine on Mar 22, 2010 10:32 AM EDT reply actions

Only thing i disagree about this is .....

as of late Griffin seems to have lost his bloodthirst he used to have. I remember watching when Griffin was on his back and he took 3 straight punches to the face and looked up at his opponent and just smiled. Since the Silva fight he has seemed to have lost a bit of heart. I would like to see Jones fight the winner of evans vs jackson then go for a title shot personally. Its time for the Machida era to be over. He won a decision over Shogun when clearly Shogun won the fight.
