Jon Fitch: 'If I can stop Thiago Alves, I did something twice GSP couldn't do in five rounds'

20091214012905_img_3392_medium

Props: Five Knuckles

Quoteworthy:

"I've made a lot of changes. You might not have seen all of them yet. You're going to see them in this fight. Thiago's made a lot of changes, but it's still not enough to beat me. I've got way more tricks up my sleeve about people trying to take me down, than he's been able to develop stopping people from that sort of thing. A win over Thiago puts me right back in line for a title shot. Especially if I can stop him. If I can stop Thiago Alves, I did something twice GSP couldn't do in five rounds. I know that smashing Thiago can put me closer to that title shot, but I'm not worried about that fight right now. I got to worry about Thiago. Everything is based on putting Thiago away."

Both Thiago Alves and Jon Fitch were defeated by Georges St-Pierre and now they have an encounter at UFC 111, the second since 2007 when Fitch smashed the Pitbull by TKO, coincidentally the last time the American stopped an opponent. From that match so far, the AKA prospect has only gotten wins by submission or unanimous decision. Jon comes off three victories in a row and a win over Alves gives him the title shot, at least he believes so. Has Jon Fitch improved so much up to be able to knockout Thiago Alves? Give me your opinions, mates.

Heck, I don’t see Fitch knocking out Alves but who knows? I think Jon is going to explores his better wrestling to prevent striking with Thiago. That’s a sensible plan to follow in.

cool congratulations, if you stop alves then yes you would have....

" did something twice GSP couldn’t do in five rounds."

but when all is said and done GSP has won the title two more times than you ever will….so again congratulations for getting your ass beaten down embarrassingly badly when it actually matters.

Fedor invented a language that incorporates Sambo and Kimuras.

So next time FEDOR is kicking your ass, don't be offended or hurt, he may be just trying to tell you he likes your hat.

what kind of BS talk is that.

Congrats you finished Alves 4 years ago.. when GSP would have KO’d you both before his morning duece.

IF is a really big IF in this case Jonny… and don’t act like you didn’t get pummeled by George.

Couldn't have said it better myself

Is he trying to create his own hype? Nice try sweetie.

The only way Fitch finishes Alves is if Alves taps due to actual penetration during humping.

Poor Fitch is resorting to MMA math

That shit dont work. Fitch keeps sayin’ he’s a new fighter, but I don’t see it. I mean, he’s good, but he was good when he fought GSP and look what happened. How much has he improved since then?? He’s taken Gono, PT, and Pierce to decisions. And Pierce almost beat him int heir fight. GSP woulda murdered those guys.

Besides, GSP pulled his groin in the Alves fight.

Have to give Fitch credit guys

He is doing a little trash talking and to be honest it does help get a shot at the belt, now can he back it up?

I disagree Eduardo

Let’s not make this a trash talking centered sport. The more we stay away from the Brock Lesnar WWE antics, the better. Those who need drama to watch the fights should look elsewhere. Fake wrestling was fine when we were kids.

Trash talking gives media attention wich = drawing power

I don’t like it much either but unless your the champion you need to stay in the headlines. Really if anyone else beat the fighters Fitch has lately they would have a title shot.

What Lesnar antics are you talking about? Do you mean when he positioned himself the Lord High Saviour of All Things Righteous and Respectful? Oh wait, that was Carwin. Or the time he said he wanted to cause his opponent to be the first MMA fighter to die in the ring? Oh that wasn’t Brock either. So tell me what his antics are other than beating the ever-loving shit out of everyone who’s stepped in the cage with him.

LOL great points P-Dub

But regardless it’s talk big whoopy do, just like every other sport. I’m just glad Fitch is finally making some news the man is on a roll again and very little talk becasue he doesn’t talk to the media as much. Carwin talks about what a great person he is all the time regardless if it cheesy or not it makes headlines and on the other hand you have Mir wanting to cause the first MMA death. If you really want to complain about what Brock says I think your just a poor sport that Brock has made look foolish? Your not the only one remember Brock has made many MMA fans look foolish LOL.

For the record

Mir is no better than Brock in that department. All my hopes are on Carwin. He’s the one who can bring honor and respect back to the heavyweight class. That’s my take on it. I don’t want to make new enemies, I have enough with the delusional Penn fans. No offence intended. To anyone. Bitches.

Yeah I do because he doesn't do much and has beat everybody in his path besides GSP

If he had a bigger mouth he would of gained more attention and media spotlight that would inform the casual fans of his accomplishments and get more fans beleiveing he is the true #1 contender. Because he is quite with the media he doesn’t get the attention that guys like Hardy do.

Point is the only man that has beat him is GSP in the last 3 years?

Regardless of opinion he’s a winner.

Here's something else Fitch can do that GSP can't

Finish out the rest of his career without ever being champ.

by pancakehead on Mar 19, 2010 1:34 PM EDT reply actions

If Hardy wins

We’ll have to call GSP the Three Time World Champion soon after. It has a certain ring to it doesn’t it?

Of course that doesn’t beat The Six Time World Champion quite yet.

It's true.

To become champ you essentially have to beat GSP twice. And as we’ve seen, rematching GSP (Hughes, Serra, Penn) is a one-way ticket to asskick-ville.

Even if GSP doesn’t get the first title shot … say Fitch or Alves beats Hardy. GSP rolls over either guy to regain his belt.

by pancakehead on Mar 19, 2010 6:14 PM EDT up reply actions

you have to beat him 2 times to get the belt?

im just saying Fitch could get the belt if Hardy wins

by BJPennfan on Mar 19, 2010 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions

True.

But he’d only keep the belt until GSP got his first shot at Fitch.

by pancakehead on Mar 20, 2010 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t even see Fitch getting past Alves. Hughes couldn’t get Alves down, and Fitch’s wrestling in fights doesn’t compare to Georges. I hope Alves knocks his head into the first row.

“If I can stop Thiago Alves, I did something twice GSP couldn’t do in five rounds.”

Even if you do, GSP will still molest you for five rounds, which will then be ten rounds that you were destroyed.
