I for one am actually excited to see this
Matt seems realistic on where he is in the WW division and how he stands.
He’ll give Renzo a good whalloping!
I loved when he chose to side with decency and let go of a bonecrunching sub to let Royce go out with dignity!
que haterade

me too, SoCal
I’d rather watch two legends go at it than watch Joe Neverwas vs Johnie Maybesomeday. I’m reminiscin’ bout the days of old. I like that old time Rock n Roll!
i like renzo but for me the greatest gracie to ever exist is royce
he has to be (and will always be) the most legendary fighter ever………its pretty cool when you here it time and time again from todays greatest mma fighters the reason they were inspired to fight is when they saw Royce gracie doing what he did in the begining
I will be pulling renzo at 112
I've always heard that Rickson was the real genius in the family
Unfortunately he only fought twice in MMA. But he was already considered a legend in Japan when PRIDE debuted.
It was cool to see him as the sensei in that Ed Norton HULK movie. He’s really old now, but from what I’ve always heard, he was the greatest of the Gracies that fought in our lifetime.
correction
FightFinder has updated his stats since last I checked to include his Vale Tudo Japan and other fights before PRIDE. Apparently he had 11 MMA fights, all of which he won by 1st round submission, most in the first 3 minutes. He retired from MMA undefeated in 2000.
ya ive heard that too
but rickson was physically gifted he was strong & put together well, similar to todays mma athletes
but what made royce so special was he had little to no physical attributes which was the intention of the gracies in choosing royce to be the pioneer in cage fighting and went to further highlight the art of jui jitsu. Demonstrating technique is superior to strength and size.
now with the evolution of the sport everyone is pretty much on an even playing field with regards to knowledge of each martial art so now most of the time its size and strengh that once again has the upper hand
yep
I’m pretty excited for the whole card actually.
Easy to pick the outcomes of most the fights, but still!

More excited for this fihgt than the 2 main events
definitely in the minority.
Loyality before Reality
Hope Gracie wins
How could you not like the guy after watching this?? Oh and Hughes is a punk. The only reason he let go of that armbar is because it was already broken and he could see that Royce wasn’t going to tap. He said so in an interview.
pot a link to the interview
i thought he said he could have broken it, but he knew Gracie wouldnt tap, and he’s a legend and so on and decided to let it go!! i don’t think Gracie’s arm was actually broke!

you must know more than the athletic comisson dr's
I remember waiting for the medical suspensions to come out wondering if his arm had broken, and according to the medical suspension I saw, it wasn’t broken

RESPECT
It is absolutely refreshing to hear a man talk with so much respect for his sport and his opponents; makes NFL’ers, BBall Players, etc look like a bunch of douche bags. As for the fight, I have no idea who is going to win. Matt, who’s attitude I can’t stand, has been unimpressive over his last 3 fights, but I don’t know how to rate Gracie. In the end, I hope Gracie wins just because he seems so grounded where Hughes comes off as a spoiled child whether he wins or not.
Whats that song the freaks come out at night?
on Mania the haters come out at night lol

i hope he can choke the smirk off hughes face..
i dunno..hopefully it will be an exciting fight..but i am just so over hughes..and i know he WAS a long time champ and blah blah..but he is a bit of a bible thumping dick..something about him just rubs me the wrong way..and he has not evolved so zzzzzzzzz!!
nope..kicking ass for the lord is fine..i suppose..
i just don’t know about guys who hand out bible’s to the fighters they were coaching..that was a bit much..loving jesus is fine..but you don’t have to shove it in peoples faces..that’s all..
my problem is the product didn't match the label
If you’re gonna say you’re a Christian and read your bible on camera all the time, then you should act like a Christian and treat people with kindness, humility, and respect. If you wanna represent Jesus, do it with your attitude, not your bumper-sticker. I got no problem with guys like Franklin and Belfort talking about their faith because from all I’ve ever seen they’ve behaved with humility, respect, even generosity to their opponents. Hughes walks around like the world is beneath him and should kiss his feet. Nothing Christ-like about that. As much as he reads that Bible, you’d think some of it would have sunk in by now!
Know the difference between Matt Hughes and God?
God doesn’t think He’s Matt Hughes.
(I know it’s an oldie, but it’s still a goodie and it fits.)
shonuff
That’s exactly how I see it too.
If you’re a good person and you are a Christian, you’ll be a good Christian.
If you’re a dick and you’re a Christian, you’ll be just another Christian dick.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. - Herm Albright
Totally agree shonuff.
I have some of those people in my family, which is why I stay away from them, but they are the biggest dicks you could ever meet yet they are in church everyday, makes no sense. Being a good person means you actually treat others with respect and don’t look down on them. Hughes is just a total douche.
But a true champion, face to face with his darkest hour, will do whatever it takes to rise above. A man fights, and fights, and then fights some more. Because surrender is death, and death is for pussies. - Kenny Powers
real conversation overheard at a UFC event
Joe Riggs: So Matt, do you think this will be your last fight or you think you’ll keep going?
Matt Hughes: No, I’ll fight again after this next one.
Matt’s Wife: Damn right he’s gonna fight again!
Matt: Yeah, she likes that paycheck. I’ll have to keep fighting as long as they let me.
Wife: I don’t care if he’s so old and broke down he’s in a wheel chair, I’ll wheel him to the cage if I have to, but he’d better bring home that check!
no way was that a real conversation wow lol what ever hughes diserves a wife like that i hate that guy hes how matt serra puts it a dick

Amazing how many people just climbed aboard Renzo's cock after this one interview...
I’m not convinced, in any other previous footage I’ve seen of him a few years back he seemed like a dick.

Both are dicks.
Renzo might be better now with age but Matt is still probably a dick. I hope they both choke themselves out somehow.

i've seen Renzo in many interviews
& he’s never really come across as a dick plus i said he was a legend that’s nothing to do with whether he’s a dick or not
Cool.

amazing how so many people can judge one person after one edited tv show
when you really dont know the guy at all. so sad

Gracie vs Shamrock
I saw Renzo’s last fight. It looked to me like he knew he was going to lose, and jumped at the opportunity after the inadvertant illegal blow to bow out. I can’t stand Frank Shamrock, but I believe he was well on his way to beating Renzo in that fight.
greatest trajedy in MMA history
was Frank Shamrock’s early retirement from the UFC. If that guy had stayed in the game after destoying Tito, he’d have DOMINATED the 185 or 170 lbs divisions (once they were formed). Back then, Tito only weighed around 215 and was able to cut to fight Frank in the “Under 200 lbs” division (back then there was only "MW:under 200, and HW: over 200). Shamrock only weighed 180-185 and was a freakin’ prodigy and made everybody else look like amateurs. He should have been a WW, but was beating HWs like Bas Rutten and T.K. If he hadn’t taken 5 years off at a critical time in the sport’s development and pissed off Zuffa and got his name banned from ever being mentioned in the UFC, he’d have had an unbelievable career. He’s still the only champ in UFC history to retire undefeated and still holding his belt.
Imagine what Frank would have done to Matt Hughes
the way he destroyed a 215 lb Tito, imagine how he would have walked through guys like Hughes, Miletich and Newton!. If instead of retiring, he had joined the just-formed WW division to fight guys his own size, he’d probably have held the belt until GSP came along.
For any of you newbs who don’t know who FRANK Shamrock is or haven’t seen him fight, or think I’m talking about his more famous lame-ass brother Ken Shamrock, you need to look up FRANK Shamrock’s fights. The guy won his first 2 UFC TITLE Fights in less than 40 seconds COMBINED! He had Penn’s Jits, GSP’s muscle, Matt Hughes’ slams, and Bas Rutten’s Kicks. He made a then-unstoppable Tito Ortiz bow at his feet and beg him to stop. (The most beautiful moment in MMA history.)
all-time dream match
Frank Shamrock vs Sakuraba 1999-2000
That would have been the greatest fight of all time!
