Mouthguards Make You Better?
Any contact sport athlete will tell you that mouthguards are a huge pain in the you know what. I've worn cheap ones you boil at home and the expensive variety I got through dental consulation. What gives? Why are mouthguards such and important part of sports and more specifically MMA? I've always known it was a good idea to wear one because of the protection you get for your chiclets and the resistance to concussion you are supposed to get but this was actually a bit of a surprising twist for me.
And I thought the interest might be shared by some of the other Maniacs.

A New Brunswick dentist says his research indicates mouthguards can improve the performance of athletes, and take away their aches and pains. Dr. Patrick Girouard, of Cap-Pelé, has been testing the theory that the way teeth fit together can affect a person's posture and centre of gravity, helping better performance and minimize the risk of injury. Girouard, who is conducting the research as part of his master's degree at Tufts University in Boston, recalls hearing about the theory during a lecture by one of his mentors about four years ago.
He didn't believe it. So Girouard, a marathon runner, decided to test it on himself. He got a mouthguard, anxious to see if it would cure a pain in his right knee. "I basically took his challenge and went out running, and to my surprise, my knee didn't bother me at all during that run," he said. "It was just mind-boggling for me. It was a revelation at this point." That run inspired the research project, said Girouard, who is specializing in craniomandibular pain discomfort affecting the head and neck. "I decided to test this theory after seeing how many athletes have to use pain medication on a regular basis. I want to find out how to maximize pain-free performance by an athlete's body using the guards."
Girouard fit 80 members of the men's and women's soccer and hockey teams at the University of Moncton with two types of customized mouthguards and used electrodes to track their muscular activity. "The athletes are quite favourable. They're saying that they see a change, they feel a change. I'd say 90 per cent of them have seen a positive change in their posture and their muscular strength," he said.
"There's a certain hockey player who had a lot of lower back pain. Once we fitted him with the mouthguard, his back pain went away."
Girouard said he has finished collecting his data on the dental appliances and is working on the statistical analysis for his thesis, hoping to develop the perfect mouthguard. Meanwhile, he continues to use a mouthguard every time he runs and will be wearing one during the Boston Marathon on April 19, he said. Mouthguards, which provide a cushion between the upper and lower teeth, are typically worn by athletes to prevent dental injuries during impact-risk sports such as hockey. They help absorb and dissipate force when the upper and lower jaws bang together.

that's really interesting BZ...
i just assumed for fighting it was to protect your lips from betting shredded..your teeth from getting smashed by impact..but if this article is true then what a revelation for many athletes..dunno about average joe’s walking around with mouth guards to cure pain..that would be almost comical..
I'll let you know
I went for a run this last sunday and noticed a “click” in my hip. No pain, just that internal noise you can only hear inside yourself (if that makes any sense) and I thought this would be worth a try.
I’ll let you know if it makes a diff. Im hoping.

I am fascinated by this, BZ. Good time killer if there ever was one. Report your personal research, please.

Nothing to do with pain
But I had to wear won for rugby, ya know the better version of NFL (only joking). I went through a good few and never found one that suited me the first few months. It affected my breathing and saliva constantly built up so I’d have to take it out for a breather
I eventually got one that fitted. It’s a huge part of my mental game. I noticed when I’m running into a tackle or making one, I grind my teeth deep into the guard to prepare myself
Never noticed it preventing an injury, but maybe that’s a good thing. I did get concussed once though
My dream match-up to see
BJ Penn vs Nick Diaz!!!!! Would only be unreal
I wore mine for Rugby too
What postion were you IrishKev? Myself, either loose or tighthead Prop. I remember using the boiler guards at first and the prob was keeping it your mouth to breath like you said.
Imagine picking up your chew piece after it’s just fallen into the bottom of a scrum
Yummy. Rinse and go.

I hate when it just landed on the mud
You wouldn’t have the time to clean so you’d wipe it and pop it back in. Feel all the grands in you gum. Oh the joy. But I never had it land in a sweaty, steamy scrum haha
I’m a fullback and winger. Play fullback more but do enjoy less responsibility on the wing. You play in England Zino?

Ah right sorry
I heard rugby and assumed British. My bad
We’ve had one American at our club for a season and a Canadian for a small while. Can’t remember where he was from though
Yeah I’m currently MIA rugby wise. I just past the U21s age and had to play minors/juniors (no where good enough for Senior). The minors are the equivalent to your beer league I’d imagine and the juniors have 5/6 years on me and are physically bigger. Went back to college soccer and just wanna get bigger before I go back to rugby

I’ve been wearing the same boiled mouthpiece for about 5 years now. It was meant for a pee-wee football player, and I still had to cut about a quarter-inch (about .6 cm) off the back of each side so it would fit right. As for position, I’ve played about everything except the 8, 9 and 10. I’m too tall and light to effectively prop, but I’ve done it before.

Sorry…had to throw that in there…

I Dont Know About Making You Perform Better
But the nicer the Mouthguard does feel as if it lessens the blow to the face. Thats just my opinion though.
I was speaking to my old football coach about this actually
Don’t quote me on this but I heard there are mouthgaurds that many pro athletes are wearing to improve performance. The mouth gaurds run around 20 to 30 thousand and are suppose to add 5 to 10% strength on average and help with your posture? Even golfers are using them. I’ll have to look into this more but I don;t have time right now.

heres one article
TRURO – Chuck Sproule has heard the skeptics.
In fact, he’s been called everything under the sky when he pitches his mouthguard as a performance enhancer.
But it doesn’t deter him and his business partner dentist Anil Makkar.
“We know our product works,” Sproule said.
And so they have taken the product, created in Truro, to professional athletes across North America, the United Kingdom and Australia.
“We are 150 per cent confident in our product,” Makkar said. “We knew we had to approach the professional teams… Testimonials from these guys are pretty powerful.”
After trying the product, athletes are buying into the technology.
For instance, a college basketball team tested their vertical with and without the custom mouthguards. Each player gained between two and three inches while the shortest player added four inches.
“From a sports point-of-view it’s amazing what people can do with it,” Makkar said. “For me, it’s just jaw-dropping.”
The Pure Power MouthGuard uses neuromuscular dentistry to relax the muscles and place the athlete’s jaw in the optimal position to enhance performance. The mouthguard brings the lower jaw down and forward to align the athlete’s bite. For some it increases balance, breathing or upper body strength.
“This is more than a mouthguard,” said Makkar, who referred to it as a legal performance enhancer.
Now it is being worn by members of NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs, Carolina Panthers and Seattle Seahawks, the NHL’s Ottawa Senators, New York Islanders and Montreal Canadiens, the NBA’s Indiana Pacers, the NCAA’s Florida Gators basketball and football teams as well as competitors in Ultimate Fighting Challenge.
And it’s not just fringe players either. Carolina wide receiver Steve Smith and Chiefs quarterback Damon Huard are just two examples of the elite athletes suiting up with the guards.
The mouthguards run for between $749 and $1,6000.
“When it becomes mainstream, the price won’t be an issue,” Sproule said. “You’ve got to bridge that gap that it is just protecting teeth.”
The two have had people come back to them after losing their mouthguard to buy another after trying to play without it. “They need the competitive advantage,” said Sproule.
The business partners find themselves amazed at the end of a long day of showcase their technology.
“Who would ever think that two guys from Truro would have such an impact on sports?” said Makkar.

Rogan: "No, no he's not. No."
LOL Yeah he needs more than a mouthgaurd
I know there is more athletes that use them, maybe not this exact one but I think even tiger uses one when he golfs Don`t quote me on that but in the end it`s been tested that it will improve posture and a little bit of athletism in athletes by simply improving the jaw allignment.

Damon Huard jokes aside, i can see how there might be something to this…if you ever watch the 40-yard dashes at the NFL combine, the fastest guys are the ones who’s jaws are most relaxed as they run, not the guys who grit their teeth. so if this thing helps you hold that relaxed jaw position, it might help with performance a little
Goldie: "Michael Jordan-esque in his grappling skills is Travis Lutter."
Rogan: "No, no he's not. No."
It's not going to make you an athlete by any means
But if it can shed a point 0.03 of the 40 and add 4inches to your vertical etc it will give little more edge to those athletes that already have one and mostly by the sounds of it help with proper posture wich is many athletes problem with bad backs and other problems that come with bad posture. Crazy what a little mouth gaurd can do but next time you watch a game of golf look to see if you can see any of them wearing mouth gaurds, I heard many were now?

I heard that wearing ther same socks for days, if not weeks without changing them
will help teams to win, or continue winning. It also goes for other undergarments or clothing. During a winning streaking, retaiing the same attire prevents any magical powers/forces that allow for great performances to escape.
Sorry, bad joke.
On the other hand, I liked the post. Good job!!!
#1 reason why mouthguards are important in MMA or boxing
without them, there would be a LOT more broken jaws.
