MMA Quick Quote: Roger Huerta enters Bellator tournament with a target on his back

Roger-huerta_medium

"Bellator provided me with a sense of security. I control my own destiny in the tournament. The winner gets to face one of the best lightweight fighters in the world -- that’s the goal. If I lose, then it’s my fault. I know I’ll have a target on my back and that these guys will be fighting with everything they’ve got when they meet me. I know it’s going to be hard because I have to win the three fights, but I’m giving myself more fights if I win. It’s up to me, and I like the sound of that."

Former UFC lightweight contender Roger Huerta (via Sherdog.com) weighs the pros and cons of joining a hungry roster of Bellator fighters that may now be licking their chops in anticipation of getting the opportunity to elevate themselves by taking down a "name" like Huerta. "El Matador" hasn't seen action since a gritty split decision loss to Gray Maynard on the final fight of his Zuffa contract at UFC Fight Night 19 last September. Can he return to form and battle his way to an eventual superfight with Bellator champion Eddie Alvarez?

He left UFC for Bellator?

Well a big fish in a small pond has it’s benefits I guess, say hi to Henderson for me ;D

Thats it.

I was wondering why it was that the UFC did sign him after that. Roger is a super tough guy. Though he did seem to lose his hunger for it back when he left, came back and then lost. If he is hungry again he will definitely be a factor in that tourney.

“Due to its success in its first season, Bellator will return for a second season on April 8, 2010 with a bigger audience on NBC, FOX Sports Net, Telemundo, and The Score. CEO Bjorn Rebney has also said he would like to get it on pay-per-view” {Wikipedia}….

sounds like Bellator is doing good…. wonder how much it has financial invested? Will they last?

I know where Hendo is

I was just saying another top guy who can’t beat the top of the UFC division going to a smaller organization to dominate.

I’m actually more interested in seeing Hendo in SF than I was in UFC, mostly to see him own Shields.
I was just being ‘cheeky’ ;D

Bellator = WIN

I seriously am liking all the big moves they are making. For a guy who watches only UFC, Strikeforce, and old pride clips on youtube, I’m extremely impressed that bellator has me checking their website daily! Good moves!

i agree!

and to be able to get a bunch of quality fights in, in a short amount of time is perfect for younger guys who need to get some cage time and build confidence!

I lost a little respect for this guy...

Instead of wanting to challenge himself and fight with the best in the UFC, he decides to go to Bellator. Maybe it’s the right move for him but in my eyes he doesn’t really love this sport and will probably lose this tournament anyways.

He doesn’t love the sport? just because someone’s not fighting in the UFC doesn’t mean they don’t love the sport. He got a good contract and he accepted it, it’s all about what’s put infront of you, the UFC clearly didn’t want Roger around anymore.

Bellator is probably the only or atleast one of the few orgs that actually is about sport, UFC is all business.

We will see

If he shows up for the tourney and puts on some good fights I will change my tune, even he doesn’t win the whole thing.

50/50 like everyone else, win or lose

I think huertas weakest spot was his wrestling, maynard has best wrestling in lw division in ufc and even he strugled to take huerta down.
So unless there is some national champ in the tourney huerta might be ok.

by Phenomenal Angel on Mar 16, 2010 1:15 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

If you stay technical, and establish range on him...the fight is in the bag.

But trying to get into a dog fight with him will probly leave you on the losing end of a decision. Florian showed how really undeveloped his standup game was. He just kept doing the same superman punch and bullrush forward with one combo or kick, over and over and over. He does have a good scrambling game though. If he makes it into the final, a fight with alvarez would be a hell of a shootout standing….probly a UD for eddie IMO whose striking is better and packs serious power.

by NNR (formerly NameNotRequired) on Mar 16, 2010 1:59 AM EDT up reply actions

yea hes a great brawler

They always say huerta wrestled but I heard from wrestlers he wasn’t too good, but his striking tho not technical was well enough to hang with everyone he’s fought, kenny did tool him but this time around I think it’d be a better fight overall.

by Phenomenal Angel on Mar 16, 2010 3:30 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

His fight with Kenny was his worst performance in the UFC, you could see something was wrong with him like he was taken back by the moment.

I think this is great news! I hope eddie signs to fight in the tourny, Alvarez and Roger would put on one hell of a fight! I think Roger left the UFC to attempt and grow his name outside of the UFC so when he returns he’ll get the money he wants. With more people starting to follow the sport I think Roger will easily be able to help his name grow if he wins this tourny, which he should.

i almost think the ufc’s hoping he loses so they can tell him " see you weren’t worth the money!"

I’m rooting for huerta all the way.

by Phenomenal Angel on Mar 16, 2010 1:11 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

I think he's challenging himself even more...

the guy wanted a bigger contract and the UFC didn’t want to pay. He’s going into this thing knowing that all these young fighters are hungry guys and Eddie Alvarez is no slouch. If he wins the tournament…bigger contract next time through with the UFC.

by manof34holds on Mar 16, 2010 2:13 AM EDT reply actions

i want to say i hate seeing him leave the ufc but he wasnt fighting anyway

dude cared nothing about fighting, you saw it in his last fight with gray…in the ufc 155 as of now he’ll never be a top 5, and he realized this…and he couldnt just sit around and make movies and espect to just come back and start getting title shots…he leaves and then comes back and the ufc gives him the ugliest fighting style guy anyone could face….its impossible to look good against gray…

i think gray was a punishment for him…the same way that machida was a punishment for tito….that was before mach was the animal that he is today, he was just the boring decision guy back then…and dana knew that there is no way tito would look good against machida…and that it would go to a boring decision…so they wanted to send tito off with a boring fight…and knew mach would be the guy…

it was the same strategy putting huerta against gray….they knew the fight would go to a decision and that huerta couldnt possibly look good no matter what…gray just has that ugly style that isnt gonna make any fighter look good…ufc isnt stupid, they know huerta gave up his hunger for fighting…

id like to see roger succeed though, i always liked the guy….plus he isnt canadian

my dream fight would have to be Brock Lesnar vs Jake Shields...and before the fight theres a video of jake slapping brock's wife...then id like to see shields try to gay porn a win over brock using his butt sex merry-go-round tactics...the massacre that would take place would be the greatest thing ever televised...every limb jake has would look like corey hill's leg...god i hate jake shields

by HellaHectic on Mar 16, 2010 3:03 AM EDT reply actions

As soon as I heard about Gray-Huerta I said that Roger had purposely been given that fight to look bad

Gray always seems to win boring decisions and stylistically is a bad opponent for Roger. He’s the sort of guy that nobody looks good against and always does just enough to win, so giving Roger that fight was an attempt to sabotage his image as an exciting and top level fighter before his contract expired as Roger was always going to lose in a boring decision to Gray.

hella

I can’t believe you think he didn’t care about fighting and it showed it the Gray fight?!? I can’t prove this, but I don’t believe anyone else in Mma wouldn’t have tapped to that Kimura. Seriously I think anyone would’ve. Maybe not the champs? But I wouldn’t doubt it. Incredible heart.

Heart is something you can't teach

I’ve always liked watching Roger fight because he always gives everything that he has in his fights. Even when he seemed to be done with fighting he still took a fight with a top 5 guy and survived a nasty looking kimura. Hopefully he can build on this and come back better than before, I want to see the Roger that had wars with Garcia and Guida not the Roger that believed his own hype and decided that he wanted to be an actor and model.

And the fight with tito wasn’t “boring” either.

Hella, you got it wrong

He wasn’t fighting?? Try watching his fights. Everyone knows Huerta leaves it all in the Octagon.

I don’t know which fight you were watching, but it was very obvious that Huerta put on his best performance against Maynard. He looked very much improved, even in a loss.

I hope he does well.

Roger is a good tough fighter with a never quit attitude, he is definately a warrior. Only because he wasn’t happy with the UFC , doesn’t mean he does not love the sport. There are quite a few fighters that are not happy, but they all have biils to pay so they are not as vocal as he was.. Koscheck used to go on quite a bit about not being happy with the UFC and how they treated some fighters , and more or less said he’d leave if there was another org of the same stature to go to, but everbody knows there isn’t. He seems to be a bit more content these days, and I suppose getting fight of the night and sub of the night helps, especially when he didn’t even deserve them.

DO YOU LOVE GREAT FIGHTS?

I don’t care about the brand, I care about watching great fights.

If you know where to look you can find a bunch of FREE MMA cards, actual LIVE fights, on your own TV, in the coming months.

In April, the FSN channel will begin Bellator MMA live on Thursday Nights. CBS and Showtime are stepping up with Strikeforce and great fighters like Hendo, Fedor, and Mousasi. The HDnet channel has DREAM, XFC, MFC, Sengoku and K-1. And of course the UFC and WEC are on Spike and VS primarily to push their PPV model with Brock Lesnar, GSP, BJ Penn and more. Many well know fighters such as Roger Huerta, Dan Henderson, and Josh Neer from the UFC have found new homes with the other promotions listed above.

7 LIVE MMA cards on Free TV for the rest of March!
10 LIVE MMA cards and 16 MMA related shows on Free TV for April!
9 LIVE MMA cards and 15 MMA related shows on Free TV for May!

You can find all these on your own TV:
http://www.my.calendars.net/mmaontv

Ask MMAmania to do an at-a-glance calendar like this please…
I only did this one to show what I’d like for them to create for us.
