UFC welterweight Thiago Alves wants payback -- first for Fitch, then St. Pierre

I_cfc_medium

Props: Tatame

Quoteworthy:

“I’m thrilled and already prepared. I’ve been waiting for this fight for four years and now I got the chance for the revenge. I like revenges. It’s time to payback. I think I was too young when we fought. I wasn’t new in the sport but was in UFC. This American system of losing weight, everything else... Nowadays, I’m a totally different fighter. I learned a lot and I am more experienced and a much better fighter when it comes to standing, wrestling, jiu-jitsu... It couldn’t be a better time. I’m coming off a loss and I want to go back to the winners list. Beating Fitch, I will fight for the belt again. I want to take him on, and go after the belt, no matter who holds it. I think Saint Pierre is going to win but you never know. If it’s Dan Hardy, I'll take the belt from him and get the revange with St. Pierre next."

Brazilian striking sensation Thiago Alves has been hard at work over at American Top Team in an effort to return to his number one contendership status in the UFC's welterweight division. In order to do that, Alves must avenge the loss he suffered to Jon Fitch four years ago when the two meet at UFC 111 on March 27 from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. So what do we think? Will Alves get the revenge he so desperately craves against Jon Fitch and Georges St. Pierre? Or is Fitch the guy who is gonna be propelled back on the path to another shot at welterweight gold?

Remember Mania's or Jesse's post the day after GSP vs Alves?

Funny title… something like

“Bad timing: Thiago Alves can beat George St. Pierre” I laughed my ass off at that one.
The quote was the same thing. I can beat anyone and should have beat GSP last night yada yada yada

That said, he is a better fighter – - as they all are years later after a loss. My real concern is how long can Thiago con’t to make weight at 170.

Bring on Daley!

I want Ricardo Arona to sign with the UFC and his first fight should be James Toney. This is a win win scenario for MMA

by Bigger Zino on Mar 15, 2010 10:30 AM EDT reply actions

I think this match will give us the real ideal of who deserves to face the champion. I hope an exciting combat with both athletes doing their best to win. Only a thrilling performance from the winner will show weather St. Pierre will have hard times in the future.

I think Fitch didn’t have a plan to take Georges and just stood a five-round nightmare against the Canadian. Did Fitch think George could break his hand punching his chin? Was that the plan?

Pitbull disapointed all the guys who expected him aggressive. He was clearly under pressure and didn’t put in practice everything he knows. St. Pierre dominated him like a master does to a student.

What’s good from this scenario? Paulo Thiago has the time to improve even more and will study the potential opponents to set good strategies when his time comes. That’s it for a while… and let’s see what Dan Hardy can do.

There was a lot of nonsense going on at ATT when he was preparing for GSP.

At that time his MT coach Ouali left, so did benki, Liborio was not getting along with a lot of the trainers. Still though, e’s going to absolutely crush fitch. It’s gonna be a replay of the Kos fight except imagine a slower, more flat footed, less explosive fighter.

i agree

fitch should realize he doesnt have enough potential

lol so Fitch should just retire?

???Fitch should retire??? Really...like Really?!

Who has he lost too that makes you think this sham? Infact the only person is GSP and on every board he is the #2 or 3 WW in the world. I think thats kind of funny actually as naive as it sounds LOL. He might not be the most exciting fighter like shields he mauls guys but that doesn’t take anything away that he wins the fights.

I think

Thiago out paces Fitch to victory and just pushed Fitch into places he doesn’t want to be. Eduardo I agree about not being agressive and NNR I forgot about aht ATT stuff that happened. Really what it reminded me of is GSP vs Hughes 1. That GSP didn’t look like the GSP we all knew and he admited he was just so nervous and I think it is the same kind of scenario as when GSP and Alves fought. With that said I don’t see a pure dismantaling of GSP the next time they fight but it will be closer I would assume.

by Edgecrusher71 on Mar 15, 2010 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions

the difference being....

gsp was beating hughes pretty good until the armbar…alves was never really beating GSP.

"I paid a worker at New York's zoo to re-open it just for me and Robin. When we got to the gorilla cage there was 1 big silverback gorilla there just bullying all the other gorillas. They were so powerful but their eyes were like an innocent infant. I offered the attendant $10,000 to open the cage and let smash that silverback's snotbox! He declined." - Mike Tyson

by Newfie3 on Mar 15, 2010 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Truth

GSP looked like he was having fun with Hughes in that first round up until the last minute take down. If only he could have held it a bit longer in that armbar, History might have taken a different turn. Oh well, things worked out fine ultimately.

I understand Edge’s point though, Alves seemed a little starstruck.

Daley still has to prove himself but is a good name for the division. Daley vs Paulo Thiago would be awesome.

what i dont get is...

…majority of ppl are crying for GSP to move up to WW asap, like after the Ardy fight. But some of the same ppl are still saying how they’d like to see Alves/GSP again, or Daley in there etc. Wtf is Georges supposed to do? Lol. Some guys just can’t win. Even though they ALWAYS win.

This is his job, his income, means of survival. I do not blame him a bit staying at WW easily kicking the crap out of people for $400,000 twice a year (not counting endorsements). And if he wants to move up to MW then so be it. At the end of the day I’m a GSP fan, I will be regardless of which wieght class he chooses…………..

Regardless who wins between Fitch and Alves they are the 2nd and third best at WW

And I would love to see the winner face GSP. After that their is KOS and Paulo as well that have been on a role and should face for the next shot. really the only MW anyone wants to see is Silva.

IF

Daley beats Kos, him and Alves should fight

by theworldismine on Mar 15, 2010 11:41 AM EDT reply actions

my money would be on Daley

It’d certainly be closely contended anyway. I think Daley has better hands, I think that’d be the difference between a stoppage win for Daley and a decision win for Alves.

Daley is also a little faster and more explosive it seems.

there's still something so unifying about sport in it's purest form, when athletes rise above themselves and touch greatness and in doing so remind us all that we also have greatness inside of us.

I've got Fitch beating Alves again anyway.

Just my opinion but I see the same outcome after 4 years with Fitch winning again. Sure, Alves has improved….but so has Fitch, so has GSP, KOS, etc. during that time. Some more than others obviously – and that’s where the opportunity lies – In the one who’s improved the most over those that haven’t.
So get in line Alves. There are a lot of guys who will get the opportunity before you. Even if you beat Fitch, you’re not getting the title shot immediately. GSP will beat Hardy – Erego GSP Alves II isn’t in 2010.

by Dugout on Mar 15, 2010 12:02 PM EDT reply actions

I think he will

get the winner of daley/kos only if daley wins. I dont think that the ufc would have him face kos cause he already beat kos. if kos beats daley then alves should get the loser of GSP/HARDY.

by titonash23 on Mar 15, 2010 12:03 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

I see your logic

I just don’t see the UFC having that fight again so soon. It’s sort of like those who think Hardy shouldn’t be having the title shot now….It’s because the UFC doens’t like to give the immediate rematches after just one win. So they award the fight to one who may be a bit less deserving but is a fresh face. I’m not saying Hardy isn’t entirely deserving but I think the argument can be made both ways that he is or isn’t. He’s on a roll but a roll over some lesser opponents, etc.

by Dugout on Mar 15, 2010 12:10 PM EDT reply actions

That might b true

dugout bcause dan hardy is very marketable right now & it would not look good 4 the ufc if he loses 2 GSP & then lose a 2nd in a row 2 alves. so they may not match him up against alves after all.

"This American system of losing weight"

Does anyone know what he means by that? Do they just not cut in Brazil? I know the Japanese typically don’t cut much, but what is the “system”? Just what the collegiate wrestlers have always done?

by Tuff.Gong on Mar 15, 2010 1:45 PM EDT reply actions

Thiago to lose both

I like Alves a lot but I think Fitch is going to bore him to death (not literally, don’t get carried away) by lying on him for 3 rounds. Fitch’s wrestling is top-notch and Alves proved in the GSP fight that he offers nothing off his back. Alves vs Daley would be an awesome fight and if Daley gets past Koshcheck (which I doubt), I’d love to see those two throw down!

by MMED on Mar 15, 2010 2:24 PM EDT reply actions

I'm looking forward very much to this fight.

Alves may not of done much against GSP on his back but he was able to get up. Alves as dangerous as his leg kicks are needs to hold back on throwing so many as they set up to easy of takedowns for both GSP and Fitch when they are ready. He needs to be carefull when he throws them and keep his balance. Alves is still young and learning but the scary thing is he’s only 24. If you think he’s at his potential your wrong but GSP and Fitch are also improving, the question is who has improved more.
