This interview was great i wonder what boxing fans make of it?

I was a fool to think Bisping had any chance against the Axe Murderer, and even more foolish to bet agaisnt the great Puck Head.

Kermit Contron would be the best

he was a JUCO wrestling champion

I disagree with what you say, but I will fight to the death for your right to say it

by PHISH NATION on Mar 14, 2010 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

Cintron would be a monster at 155lb. Big KO power and very physically strong with wrestling background. I would love to see him come over. About a year ago I remember him stating in an interview that he was toying with the possiblity.

by Tuff.Gong on Mar 14, 2010 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions

kermit would be cool...and will happen

he’s around 30 now so he could still do it, although I’d love for him to fight Margarito one more time…maybe a lost cause but it would be awesome to watch

wow

I never knew he kermit wrestled, but yea that would be awesome, I know there is another boxer who’s a wrestler, freestyle I believe in the 170-195 area, I just don’t remember who.

Toney's nowhere near as washed up as Tyson

He’s not fought in years and got KO’d by Danny Williams in his last fight. The last thing that Tyson should be doing is fighting again.

Did anyone ever see the T.V. show fight science?

They tested all sorts off MMA and and individual martial arts techniques measuring speed, power, accuracy etc etc. They also tested glove types vs bare knuckles. They had Bas Rutten do the test.

From bare knuckles to 4oz gloves was a HUGE difference in power. But from 4oz to regular boxing gloves there was next to NO DIFFERENCE. A lot of people think smaller gloves means more power…not so, they are more accurate and allow you to grapple, thats it.

I thought I read that once. Either way, he has a serious chance of being very competitive if he crossed over, at least compared to the majority of boxers…

and how is this his fault? he was asked and he answered what he honestly thought. i didn’t said he was going to be successful, he said he would be the most successful.

by lobsterarmcrank on Mar 14, 2010 12:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought he gave a decent answer. I think the interviewer may have been looking for him to say a guy like Toney would do well with superior punching technique and power to knock ugys out and be successful but instead Freddy picked a small guy who is faster. Decent answer in my opinion.

by Mayhem chimpanzee on Mar 14, 2010 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

Bout the smaller guys having better chances. I’d like to see some big names try it. I wonder what weight Hatton would fight at, he loses a load to make weight. If he did that drop to make 155, he’d be a big man to take down and keep down

by IrishKev on Mar 14, 2010 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Hatton's going to announce his retirement very soon

He let his weight balloon far too high to ever comeback, even for his standards, and his family don’t want him fighting anymore because of those KO defeats to Pacman and Money. He’s just going to stick to being a promoter now. At this point Hatton is done fighting period nevermind MMA.

i knew the fight would go down like that.

I like clottey and he dissapointed me, I thought he would give pac the best fight yet, but guess not, I kept thinking how is he gonna engage with his d and pacs speed.
Lol
Anyways has anyone seen andre berto?
I think his pops is mma coach and he’s a good boxer, I wonder if in surprise hell make transition.

by Phenomenal Angel on Mar 14, 2010 12:08 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

You like Clottey?

I never cared for him, he never lets his hands go and is a tremendous crybaby.
Berto would be a cool transition, his pops was like a pro wrestler that teaches mma now I think.
However, Berto is about to hit the big paydays in boxing and would be foolish to switch now. BTW, I think Mosley would have schooled him if the fight had happened.

by Tuff.Gong on Mar 14, 2010 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions

yea i like clottey

Besides the pac fight, he’s had some good fights, I personally think he won the cotto fight and I was going for cotto, I liked his defense and attacks, true didn’t work for pacs speed.
Also the margarito fight I think he lost a split but no lie his hand made a difference, id like to see a rematch of that.

Yea I think mosley woulda beat berto, but after berto gets some money making fights, boxing won’t be too great or watched he’d have money and if dedicated to fighting he’d be an awesom transition, I don’t think he’s even peaked in boxing.

by Phenomenal Angel on Mar 14, 2010 1:39 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I agree

that Berto hasn’t yet peaked. He has a real physical style and athletically gifted and could be a real force in MMA if he was dedicated. He just passed on his first PPV due to the tragedy in Haiti. I don’t think even UFC is going to pay him anywhere near what a PPV headlining fight in boxing would have.

They are known as the Fighting Bertos! The whole family fights either boxing or mma. All 6 kids compete in some sort of combat sport from boxing, mma, to grappling tournaments…They have a super respected kids program and gym in Central Florida.

I respect the hell out of Roach

He seems to really understand both boxing and MMA as different sports and how they can both be great but doesn’t feel the need to demean one to benefit the other. Also, that guy just loves what he does to keep working as much as he does even with his illness. Class act!

What I would have been interested to hear (Because we hear all the time he has time best boxing in MMA) is how he thinks Penn would do in the boxing realm against top-tier competition. I know Silva wants to fight Roy Jones Jr. but it would be fun seeing a day in Roach’s gym when both Penn and Pacquiao showed up and had a serious sparring session. Comparable sizes…

by Mayhem chimpanzee on Mar 14, 2010 12:10 PM EDT reply actions

It would be hella fun to see.

Fun but i think even with the size deference Pac Man would out class Penn and make him look like an amateur. This is coming from a HUGE Penn fan. I also think Roy Jones would spank on A.S. But it would be fun to witness.

by Pack Leader on Mar 14, 2010 12:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Pacman would murder BJ and Andy could actually be competetive with RJJ

That’s how shot Roy is at this point, even Danny Green was able to KO him in the first. Shame as he was so good in his day but he’s gone on for far too long and is ruining his legacy with every fight. If Andy retired from MMA and joined a top boxing gym then I’d bet on him against the once great RJJ.

I don’t know how BJ would sub him at all. Because the hypothetical was a BOXING sparring session between the two.

by Mayhem chimpanzee on Mar 15, 2010 10:44 AM EDT up reply actions

I have never been sold on Jones...

I think he made his career fighting no namers and guys before they came to their peak. He never fought that Polish guy either, can’t remember his name, but it seemed like he avoided him like crazy. The guy was stripped of his title. I forget why but I think Anderson would do ok against him.

Dana would take Pacquiao in a heartbeat

He is a big fan, as am I. He can overwhelm anyone on the stand up. He would fight at lightweight I presume. BJ Penn v Pac Man now thats the dream fight. Give Pacquiao 1 year of takedown and submission defence and he will be a star in MMA

Give pac 5 years I still think bj would sub him. But bj is bj. Standing it would be a sick fight but even so pac is small for even the featherweights of mma I think. How about aldo/pac

by Phenomenal Angel on Mar 14, 2010 1:43 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Yeah right

If a guy like Kenny, who has been training takedown and sub defense for waaaaaay longer than a year couldn’t stop BJ’s what the hell makes you think Pacquiao could?

His boxing wouldn’t help him pick up that other stuff. That’s like saying Demian Maia could be a pro boxer in a year.

Exactly. One year of take down defence isn't going to do shit for anyone.

nice

At last an honest interview about both sports from some one respctful! No bull talk from toney/hopkins etc just down to earth factual knowledge which is appreciated.

Roach hit the nail on the head a few times but the key dimension i think was around the distance and the importance of this in relation to both sports. Its quite simple that although mma may have good boxers they are not at the same level of the guys that pro box at the highest level, equally it can be said about boxers in mma as there is so much to know and learn!!

Its a joy however knowing that roach watches the mma fight game and is keen to learn about the sport including wanting to work with guys like gsp. He seems so aware of where the 2 sports are and how they can learn from each other, this is the kind of people that can make both sports better as there is space for both.
Props to roach.

Funny tho when he was discussin pacman i thought he was trying to say jui jitsu but couldnt remember what it was called so flung muay thia lol?? anyone else pick up on that?

I always try to listen when he is talking. Didn’t he once say BJ has the best boxing?
Since Hardy is getting trained by him I’m giving him just more than puncher’s chance against GSP. Maybe he’ll catch him on the way in for a TD, don’t really think so though
