Dana White: Randy Couture (not Chuck Liddell) vs Rich Franklin at UFC 115 in Vancouver

Randy_couture_medium
Former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin (25-5) will not face Chuck Liddell (21-7) at UFC 115 on June 12 in Vancouver despite numerous reports that surfaced earlier today.

On the contrary, "Ace" will headline the show opposite former heavyweight and light heavyweight champion, Randy Couture, in a 205-pound showdown, according to UFC President Dana White.

In addition, White assured fans that "nothing happened to Tito" and that he and the "Huntington Beach Bad Boy" are still "cool," indicating that he is perhaps still set to battle nemesis Chuck Liddell as planned at the conclusion of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 11.

More on this breaking news as soon as possible.

In addition to Couture vs. Franklin, UFC 115 is expected to feature a heavyweight mash-up between Mirko Cro Cop and Pat Barry while welterweights Martin Kampmann and Paulo Thiago make their case for 170-pound contendership.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for future updates on this still-developing fight card.

Any timetable for the Tito/Chuck fight?

I like Randy/Franklin. Should be a good fight.

This fight is a interesting one

Mainly down to the fact Franklin has always done well against Wrestlers, but struggles against the more dynamic opponents, eg: Belfort, Anderson, Machida. As for Randy I have a feeling if he wins they will give him the next title shot or the winner of this faces winner of Rampage vs Rashad. BTW, I have it on good authority that Thiago Silva will face Ryan Bader. I’ve got Thiago Silvas xbox live tag on my buddy list and he says its in the works.

Agreed.

I would much rather see Randy fight Rich Franklin. It should be good competitive fight. I also want to see Chuck and Tito fight different people. Personally, I would like to see Tito fight James Toney (the trash talking would be epic and Tito would brutalize him on the ground) and to see Chuck fight Coleman. I know that Coleman just got cut, but I think that he presents some interesting challenges for those who generally have a stand up style. Randy was a terrible match up for Coleman (although Coleman was the one who asked for that fight)

Epic Rematch for sure...

Rampage is not the same fighter he was in Pride and Shogun is still not fighting with the ferocity that he had in Pride(The Machida fight was the best he has looked and he still didn’t look like he ever wanted to even attempt finishing that fight). It could end up being a bad night for Shogun and Rampage could end up avenging both of his onesided beatdowns! I know a lot of people here don’t like Rampage, but when he has an agenda-he has been brutal.

Inside Fighting, then MMAjunkie, etc ,etc. ALL of them said they have one, if not several credible sources and sources “close to the situation”.

This first came out as Liddell vs Franklin on April 17th by “credible sources close” to the situation. How can these sources be even considered “credible”. Sites like mmajunkie and mmaweekly love to run with stories and be the first with breaking news…….and they say they have sources..but has to be bullshit. If they had a crdible source, they would of had a little better idea of what was actually happening. Intead they run with something vaguely close to what is actually happening from “inside” sources.

Now BOTH mmajunkie and mmaweekly HAVE changed their part of the story...

thats says they have a credible source and “inside sources close to the situation”.

Someone said that maybe Tito got arrested. He was impersonating a fighter.

My guess is that Tito found a way to back out of his 3rd asskicking against Chuck. Tito in his prime couldnt stop Chuck, I dont think today’s Tito will do any better, even with the slowing, aging Liddell.

It is probably some ploy to get us to tune into TUF every week, just like their did us with Kimbo. Fuck that. I ’ll stop watching if they use this “mystery” as a reason to tune in each and every week.

I can see it now

Disaster strikes, as Tito Ortiz may not be able to fight at the end of the series. “Do you want to be a fucking fighter or not?” (Dana White). Will Tito Ortiz be ready in time to fight Chuck Liddell? “My back is 100%, my cardio is 110%. I feel great. This is the best ever Tito Ortiz.” (Tito Ortiz). Or will the biggest fight of the year be cancelled? “Tito’s spent his whole career ducking me” (Chuck Liddell). Find out next week on the Ultimate Fighter. “On Spike” (Tito Ortiz doing a shit Kimbo impression).

by fightfan on Mar 13, 2010 7:00 PM EST up reply actions

That is what the big deal was with Hammil/Bisping

That fight was in the UK, England I beleive. There is no fight commission in England at that event. In cases such as these…everything from the refs, judges, doctors, drug testing, etc, etc is done by UFC paid employees. They are guys that the UFC hires and brings over to the UK to perform their specific duties.

Vera vs Couture was also in the UK, England also, I beleive. I know that the Hammill/Bisping mentioned above was all true. And I am 95% sure that nothing has changed since then.

If anyone has any info, PLEASE let me know and correct me. But, I am fairly confident that Vera/Couture was the same situation as before in England. I am sure about the Bisping /Hammil fight and UFC bringing over their own judges, ref, docs, drug testing, etc, etc because when that happened I did quite a bit of research on it at that time. And the main point of many arguements was that the UFC brought over their own fight commission essentially.

I hope that helps

by fightfan on Mar 13, 2010 7:17 PM EST up reply actions

Most countries don't have national commissions for MMA so the UFC usually brings their own staff to most events outside of the US

As far as I know they still do that over here. Good call on why there has been some shady decisions on foreign cards but the UK isn’t the only place where dodgy judging takes place by any means. I hope that the crappy Couture and Bisping decisions were because of incompetence and not fight fixing.

I meant no bias just because it was the UK

I agree that ANYWHERE there isnt a fight commission and the UFC has to fly in and bring basically a fight commission in, shady thigns can happen.

LIke both Bisping and Couture. Just imagine that your boss is Dana White. Imagine that HE PAID to fly you over for basically as vacation, minus the day of work. If you actually worked for the UFC, you knew what it meant for UFC business if Bisping and these days Couture win. You woudl definitely know the marketing and money spent on Bisping. you know that you couldnt have teh TUF winner losing. Both of them winning, mean much more money for the UFC. Just imagine hard grinding Dana White as your boss and you have to judge those 2 fights…..you know which one winning is BEST for UFC’s PROFIT. That is why Couture won that fight and Bisping for that matter.

I know everyone thinks it is just because I hate Bisping. In almost every poll, 80-90% of all thought that Hammil won. Minus Bisping close frioends and die hard followers….that leaves just about EVERYONE else thinking Hammil won.

No one will discuss this in much detail…but it is a problem when you have the UFC basically being the fight commission. I think they are very fair, and I believe they are NOT crooked, nor is this a conspiracy. But just imagine there is a close decision and your boss is Dana White…..which fighter you gonna pick???? With more and more cards outside the US….I can see more and more “contraversial” decisions. What a word for that “contraversial”. LOL

by fightfan on Mar 14, 2010 12:44 AM EST up reply actions

This goes for their cards in US too.

If they can do so overseas they sure as hell can in the US, the UFC is mma and have been for a long time now.

there's still something so unifying about sport in it's purest form, when athletes rise above themselves and touch greatness and in doing so remind us all that we also have greatness inside of us.

by RoBerto. on Mar 14, 2010 10:19 AM EDT up reply actions

But the difference lies in the commision...

The UFC doesn’t get a say in who judges a fight. The commission puts the judges to work. Therefore it allows an extra barrier of protection. Can fights get the fix in the US? Of Course. There is always ways to grease palms and I don’t think fightfan was being biased in the least, it is just a fact that is hard to be overlooked, many of the shady calls have been in the overseas market.

As far as hometown advantage, that happens in many sports. How many times does the hometeam get the close call or the benefit of the doubt in just about every sport known to man. I am not sure anything can ever truly be done about that except for making sure the judges that have proven themselves most partial remain employed. For example someone like Cecil Peebles(sp?) has been involved in a large amount of questinable calls. Is he really still the best choice for high stake fights?

Even in the US with the commisions, the popular fighter can get extra juice from the audience cheering anytime he does anything and in a close fight it can definately sway the judges imo.

Randy has been WAY more competitive than Chuck in recent years. Chuck’s lost 4 of his last 5, 3 of them by going to sleep. And he hasn’t had a convincing win since the last time he beat Tito, 4 years ago. Couture may be slowing down, but he’s still got a lot more left in him than poor Chucko.

That’s what he’ll have to do if he wants to beat Rich. He sure as shit ain’t gonna box with him. LnP FTW.

Randy vs. anyone = 3 round dirty boxing decision borefest

He realized after brock and nog that he can’t afford to box with fighters anymore. This will be how every single one of his fights will be until he hangs them up

by wandwagon on Mar 13, 2010 7:06 PM EST reply actions

At least

He isn’t being prideful and stupid. He knows his strengths and he knows what he can do at this point in his career. Love seeing Randy still be able to compete. I don’t think that he can get the title again though. I think that anyone with knockout power is too much of a threat and they will put Randy down. But Randy beats the odds all of the time.

What sucks for Randy is that every fighter that he competes against is probably in their greatest shape possible because they are fighting a legend. Same goes for Chuck. They are up against pretty tough odds in any bout they take. It’s amazing that Randy can still compete the way he does and I hope that Chuck can string together a few wins in this comeback.

by RyanHobbs on Mar 14, 2010 5:31 AM EST up reply actions

Yep

And Vera defended every takedown. He actually almost finished him in rd 2. In rd 3, the same, Randy desparetly trying for takedown, without getting it and some dirty boxing that did no damage at all to Vera. Vera actually takes Randy down and briefly gets full mount before the fight ends….

And this is scored as a win for Randy?? That was some bullshit. I say this even though I respect Randy more than any fighter out there. Simply, he did not win that fight

by fightfan on Mar 13, 2010 7:21 PM EST reply actions

yes he did.

Judges and I saw it that way as well. Your opinion; over ruled. Victory awarded to: Randy & Worby.

you can’t win if you’re not fighting in a fight, randy was just pushing brandon against the fence.

Expect the takedown, knockdown, wobbling Randy with the first strike and mount

Hard to compare with Randy’s clinch against the fence, right?

Vera should have won that fight

and the fact that he didn’t is a big setback in his career. Now imagine if he loses to Jones. I don’t know if I should be impressed with Couture or disappointed with Vera.

i don't know

i was hoping they would give it to vera, but with the 10-pt must system, i agree with judges and worby (fightmetric says 29-29 draw for 10pt must, but gives it to vera 158-142 on total performance). vera got in good shots, but i think randy controlled two of the 3 rounds. though i also am not sure whether to credit randy or be disappointed in vera. i guess both.

by cancer on Mar 14, 2010 1:26 AM EST up reply actions

randy won

im shocked this is even a debate, we all know how mma is scored,

round one there was no action but randy did control where the fight took place and, if that is all that happend in a round then you give it to the guy who controled where the fight went.

round two, vera won, but every thing he did was in this round, so now there tied 1-1

round three, randy landed three times the amount of strikes controled the pace and where the fight went for most of the round while vera landed two or three body kicks and got a take down for all of five seconds, when it goes to the judges, they score the rounds by points which randy clearly had more, 29 28 by all three judges to randy. it was a boring and close fight but it was no robbery

by Blazy j on Mar 14, 2010 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions

When I say he should have one that fight

I mean it was very important for him to win it. He had to succeed. I didn’t mean it was a robbery although it was a close fight.

Vera was the only one who landed any meaningful strikes and successfully took his opponent down

A knockdown in the second and takedown and transition into mount in the third should count for more than holding against the fence, plus Vera rocked Randy with the first punch in the first. Control should only be the deciding factor if nothing happens, it should never count for more than superior positions, knockdowns or takedowns.

exactly, Yan!

I don’t get how people bitch when Couture wins, saying, “all he did was hold him against the fence”, when all Vera did was get held against the fence. If a guy spends 80% of a fight in a position he doesn’t want to be in, but can’t do a damn thing to get out of…I call that losing!

But don’t get me wrong, I was VERY impressed by Vera’s wrestling skills. How many guys have we ever seen make it through 3 rounds without Randy taking them down. I had heard that Vera’s greco was top-notch and one of MMA’s best kept secrets, but I was still surprised and impressed by his defense in the clinch. BUT, defense isn’t enough to win. He did very little offensively in that position and was not able to escape it.

I think its a close fight but I want to see rich beat the old man, hopefully his striking (especially being a southpaw) will be the difference, I think rich is pretty strong and will be able to defend the take downs, although rich had some serious trouble in the clinch against anderson, different clinch game though. Hopefully rich wins and so they finally give him some of the top 5 guys, they’re keeping him on the outskirts of 205 without really giving him a shot

by jimmy ricard on Mar 13, 2010 7:30 PM EST reply actions

I agree about the outskirts

But the thing is, Rich hasn’t looked confident in at least his last 3 or 4 fights. He’s not confident in himself, and neither are the matchmakers. He’s definitely a marketable guy, but he has to win and be impressive to deserve to be in the mix with the top guys. He destroyed Ken Shamrock and got a lot of recognition for that fight when he came on the scene, deservedly or not. He looked impressive in a few fights, but once Silva crushed him, I think he lost a tremendous amount of status and attending credibility, and, hasn’t done enough to recapture it.

Hey Kev, I have just recently Got back, I havent talked to you guys in like almost 2 years. Are all the old regulars still here? John,Adam G,Phil,Mex?… Any way, I was gonna see what you thought about this, Could we see a Liddell -Randy 4? If all this Rich vsRany talk is true,if Chuck beats Tito,if Randy beats Franklin. I know its a long shot but like others have pointed out Randy will probably want another shot at the Title.Chuck has laready stated he wants to get aother crack at it. So if it plays out you think there could be a 4th fight. For a title shot?…Just sayin cause both are tight with Dana and Im sure DW wants chuck to go out getting what he wants likewise for randy.Just thought Id get your alls take.

by DBG on Mar 14, 2010 12:56 AM EST reply actions

DBG, I can't see it happening. Fight #3 was anything but competitive.

BUT Chuck has been declining at a rampant pace while Randy almost improves with age.

I just think that it would be hard to market Randy/Chuck 4. I for one, would not be all that interested in that fight. Hell, I’d rather see Tito/Chuck 3 and 4 before Chuck/Randy 4

I AM SOMETIMES BIASED - Get over it!!!!!!!

I like TUF

It’s far from perfect, but as a fan I still enjoy it every week. You can’t deny some quality fighters have come up through the show. The worst parts are the stupid crap at the house that feels a little scripted/forced. Definitely better than Contender ever was, the first season they actually edited the fights with slo-mo and would only show like 1 or 2 min of each round to make one guy look like he was in the fight even when getting his ass kicked.

by Tuff.Gong on Mar 14, 2010 10:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm getting sick of it to be honest

It’s always the same format and some of the fights last year were bloody awful. The show has run it’s course in my opinion, it’s no longer necessary to find new talent and the reality aspect of it is so contrived that it’s getting frustrating to watch.
