Wec48results-1_medium

World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) is set to pull the trigger on its first-ever pay-per-view (PPV) fight card tonight (Saturday, April 24) for the promotion's return trip to the Arco Arena in Sacramento, California.

WEC 48 features a featherweight championship title fight between the promotion's greatest marketing asset, "The California Kid" Urijah Faber, and the seemingly invincible 145-pound champion, Jose "Junior" Aldo.

Also booked for the star-studded event is newly-crowned lightweight champion Ben "Smooth" Henderson as he answers the call of Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone. Mike Brown will also take part in the action when he collides with Manny "Pitbull" Gamburyan.

MMAmania.com will provide LIVE blow-by-blow, round-by-round coverage of WEC 48, beginning with the PPV telecast at 10 p.m. ET. In addition, up-to-the-minute quick results of all the under card have already been recorded below.

Remember, too, that we'll also be on the spot for the Spike TV broadcast, which begins at 9 p.m. ET with two bouts -- Leonard Garcia vs. Chan Sung Jung and Alex Karalexis vs. Anthony Pettis -- to get us primed for the promotion's first-ever PPV event.

Many of our readers check-in before, during and after the televised action to share their thoughts on all the exciting action. Therefore, feel free to leave a comment or 48 before you leave and chat with all the other Maniacs during the show -- it always turns out to be a great discussion.

Keep in mind that we will also be the spot for the latest news, recaps and post-fight analysis after "Aldo vs. Faber."

Without further delay, see below for the latest WEC 48 results. (Note: This will go from the bottom up; therefore, scroll toward the bottom for the latest detailed round-by-round action!)

WEC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo vs. Urijah Faber (145-pound limit)

Round one: Faber comes out throwing some faints looking for distance. Aldo patient and stalking. Faber trying to get off with a right more than once but nothing there. Aldo throwing some leg kicks but hasnt connected. Leg kick from Aldo. Big leg kick from Aldo trips up Faber. Great body shot and leg kick combo from Aldo. Faber reaches for a single but nothing there he did not commit to it fully. Faber is having trouble closing the distance and getting into striking range to land something of significance. Nice knee to the gut from Aldo as Faber charges in. Good kick from Faber. Faber looking to land some left right combos. Aldo lands a big flying knee while Faber was going for one of his own. Spinning back kick from Aldo. That's the round, mostly just a feeling out process but Aldo landing more shots especially with the leg kicks and knees. Faber is having trouble getting in striking range, 10-9 Aldo.

Round two: Faber with alot of faints trying to make Aldo commit to something so he can counter or get a take down. Big body kick from Aldo. Great leg kick from Aldo buckles the California kid. Nice uppercut and left hook from Aldo and he just missed hitting the button with that combo but it still landed. Nice leg kick from Aldo and now Faber is starting to lead with his left often and becoming predictable. Leg kick from Aldo. Leg kick from Aldo. Faber briefly switches to southpaw. Big leg kick from Aldo and Faber is starting to favor his left leg from these strong kicks from the champ. Nice left to the body and sharp leg kick from Aldo and Faber buckles his left leg is hurt. Faber switches his stance now and is trying to avoid putting weight on his leg. Another big leg kick from Aldo and they are taking their toll. Another leg kick lands. Nice body kick to close out the round by Aldo, and Faber is limping back to his corner. 10-9 Aldo.

Round three: Aldo is just dominating with his leg kicks. Faber is rendered helpless right now. Aldo keeps landing vicious leg kicks. Faber is wearing down. Faber catches a kick and trips Aldo but the champ is right back to his feet. Great body shot and leg kick from Aldo drops Faber to the mat. Aldo lands a head kick now and throws some serious combo punches which are landing!! Aldo is dominating right now and his leg kicks are taking a serious toll. Faber drops to the mat with every leg kick. Aldo is controlling this fight easily now. Thats the bell and Faber is carried to his corner by his corner men at the end of this round. 10-9 Aldo.

Round four: Another leg kick from Aldo. Again another big leg kick from Aldo. Aldo now pounding away with leg kicks on the other leg of Faber. Faber pulls guard desperately and Aldo pounces on top and has mount for a second but Faber gives up his back. Aldo with both hooks in. Aldo throwing some hammer fists to try and find an opening. Faber somehow bounces to his feet! Leg kick from Aldo drops Faber to the mat again, he is fighting on one leg. Aldo is on top now and Faber is holding on trying to avoid ground and pound. Crucifix position from Aldo and he is landing some big punches now. Faber can't defend. Elbows now from Aldo. Aldo is throwing elbows trying to cut open Faber. Faber cannot get out of this position because he only has one leg to push off on. Aldo is literally throwing non stop elbows here. Thats the round 10-9 Aldo and this fight is as good as over unless Faber pulls a miracle.

Round five: Aldo has not even broken a sweat you cannot tell he has even been in a fight. Faber is torn and tattered. Leg kick from Aldo again. Faber with a desperate take down attempt and Aldo spins out. Faber on the ground now and Aldo is just waiting for him to get to his feet and Faber is lying there hoping to pull guard or entice Aldo to the ground. Faber knows he has nothing left on his feet. Aldo side steps a take down attempt. Leg kick from Aldo, he is not very active and it probably is because he knows he has this fight won already if he can make it to the end of the round. Big body shot from Aldo. Faber with a half hearted take down attempt and now he is lying on his back and Aldo is throwing some more leg kicks. That is the bell and Jose Aldo simply put dominated from start to finish. He used vicious leg kicks to turn Faber into a one legged fighter and after that there was nothing Faber could do to even put up the facade of being able to win this fight. Aldo could have done more at the end to try and finish this fight especially with as weak as Faber was, but he was up big on points and has never been in a 5 round fight so he most likely wanted to play it safe.

Final result: Jose Aldo defeats Urijah Faber via Unanimous Decision

Leonard Garcia vs. Chan Sung Jung (145-pound limit)

Round one: Jung promised to stand and bang with "Bad Boy" tonight ... let's see if he lives up to his word. So far so good -- both fighters are angling to land blows. Garcia lands a low kick and Jung misses with a wild right. Garcia lands a big blow to the ear of Jung. And it's on! Haymakers from both fighters. It's furious action. Garcia appeared to land the more powerful shots, as well as a knee, but it was major action in the early going. They end up tied up against the fence and Garcia lands a nice elbow. They break and Jung pours it on, landing several more strikes. Garcia looks gassed already -- not good. Jung throws a leg kick that lands partially and keeps stalking Garcia. he catches Garcia with a huge left, then a right, that drops him. Garcia is hurt. Jung follows him to the canvas and rains down punches. Garcia is in trouble. He scoots out and locks in an armbar. It looks tight, but Jung is able to get out and keeps pounding Garcia. Garcia gets to his feet, but Jung lands a knee. Here we go again! Garcia is gassed, but the two are once again in all out brawl. Wow! The round ends. Incredible action. The crowd is going bananas ... and rightfully so. What a war!

Round two: Garcia looks a little refreshed, let's see how long it lasts. He lands a left, but Jung hits him with a high kick. Garcia with his head down is slinging punches, landing a massive blow. Jung is hurt! Garcia is going for broke ... Jung is hurt. But he keeps on fighting. Garcia has his head down and is just throwing wildly. He misses with a spinning back fist, which Jung reciprocates with a miss of his own. The pace has slowed a bit. Garcia lands a nice kick, and another. Jung flies in with a big right. Garcia misses with a left. Garcia misses with a haymaker, spins himself around, and Jung jumps on his back. Garcia is able to somehow get out, but that could have been bad. Garcia lands a huge left that wobbles Jung, but he keeps pressing forward. Garcia throws a right that glanes off the top of Jung's head. Jung keeps the pressure on, hitting him with a high kick then a knee. Once again he's pouring it on! Garcia is hurt again but keeps on swinging. Now he lands a shot that backs Jung off. The bells sounds. Once again, ridiculous action. It's impossible to write it all down. Wow.

Round three: Five more minutes. I'm not sure I can even last at this pace. Jung now looks a little tired. Garcia senses it and puts the pressure on early. Garcia throws a high kick, followed by an inside leg kick. And another. Jung misses with a right. Both fighters trade wild (and errant) punches. Garcia lands a high kick, which seems to wake up Jung. A little break in the action as both fighters slow down. Garcia misses with a spinning heel kick. Jung now stalks garcia. Garcia lands a straight left and then a body kick. Jung explodes and catches Garcia with a nice one-two. Here they go again ... UNREAL. Both fighters are landing huge shots as the clock ticks down to one minute. Garcia lands a knee on the break. Garcia keeps moving forward, trying to steal the fight in the final seconds. Tremendous heart. They flurry as the horn sounds and then give each other a well-deserved hug. Tremendous fight. Completely awesome. I have no problem with either fighter getting the nod. One more round, anyone?

Final result: Leonard Garcia defeats Chan Sung Jung via split decision

-end-

Alex Karalexis vs. Anthony Pettis (155-pound limit)

Round one: Here we go! Karalexis comes out pawing a jab and missing with a low kick. Pettis lands a Karate Kid-like switch kick, then a left-right combination that stuns Karalexis. He goes in for a takedown to shake off the cob webs, but Pettis is able to shuck him off. Pettis attempts another high kick, which Karalexis catches and uses to score a takedown. Karalexis works some decent ground and pound, but Pettis is able to make it to his feet rather quickly. Pettis lands a right to the jaw of Karalexi. And another. He throws another switch kick, which Karalexis blocks this time. Low kick from Pettis lands. Karalexis lands a nice right and shoots for another takedown. He doesn't get it, but lands a decent jab on the break. Pettis lands two nice leg kicks that nearly take Karalexis off his feet. Two more! Karalexis tries to close the distance to avoid the leg kicks and lands a partial takedown as the first round comes to a close.

Round two: Karalexis again comes out as the aggressor, dumping Pettis on his back to start the second. Pettis is able to escape again quickly and makes him pay with another low kick. But, again, Karalexis is able to score a takedown. Pettis angles for gogoplata, but Karalexis steps out to get a better position. He dives in again to work him on the ground, but Pettis throws on a lightning-fast triangle choke that is TIGHT! Pettis is punching him in the face and choking him out simultaneously. Karalexis can't get out ... he's fading. That's it! Karalexis has no other choice but to tap. Great finish for "Showtime" once again.

Final result: Anthony Pettis defeats Alex Karalexis via submission (triangle choke) in round two

Have you seen aldo fight? He has been destroying everyone!

Its pretty easy to see how most people are thinking that… Aldo has ended his last 6 fights by tko or ko… urijah has gone 4-2 with both losses coming from mike brown, the guy aldo just beat pretty easily for the belt..

Aldo by tko in the 2nd!

I see Urijah getting KO'd

I think Aldo is way too fast and explosive and too good of a counterpuncher for Urijah to have a chance. Even when it went to the ground he handled Brown easily to get the TKO.

by AFA on Mar 12, 2010 10:35 PM EST reply actions

not bad

I don’t see urijah getting killed, I see a possible ud for aldo, urijah playing smart is tough to kill, urijah is gonna try to use speed to score points but it won’t be enough imo.
If urijah chooses to rush and bang, it’ll be an awesome fight for a short period of time.
Can’t wait for this

i hate when the ufc puts 2 freakin prelims on at 9 on spike only to waste my time and money since i already bought the ppv when i could have also watched kessler and froch on showtime for free from 9-10 then the wec ppv at 10 and no i dont have a dvr HELP!

Well I ended up buying it, I'm watching the online feed

Like a sucker I bought it too late for the free prelims offer. Oh well, it’ll be worth it for Smooth-Cowboy II (their first fight was one of my all time favourites) and watching Jose murder Faber in front of his hometown fans. Should be a sick card and finally these guys are going to get paid worthwhile amounts.

Agreed. Great slugfest, close fight but I think Jung did more to win it – including the fun take-down in round 2.

+1 Jung deserved that big time. ROunds 1 and 2 were clearly his, arguably round 3 as well.

I hate to say it but I feel there is bias towards American fighters against foreign ones, especially Asians. I called it that Garcia would get the decision based on this.

fronst1, I told my dad the same thing. If it came down to a decision Garcia would win.

As I was watching the fight I was stoked and disgusted at the same time. Two people literally laying it all out on the line to the point of pure exhaustion. The damage they were taking was insane and I was cringing the whole fight. They Reed Harris should give Korean Zombie a win bonus. He got fucked more that MMACHAMP.

Faber has a giant heart – he’s lost terribly but props to him for surviving

err no

Aldo let him survive

He could have quit in the corner like BJ, but he didn’t.

Well BJ is a bitch

His corner should have pulled him out anyway, no way should they have let him fight for 2 rounds on 1 leg

The cornerman had to carry him FFS.

I agree

That’s my only explanation

by Mad A on Apr 25, 2010 12:31 AM EDT up reply actions

That and the fact that he trains with Anderson Silva.

Aldo is a great fighter, too bad he's as smart as a rock

Kicking the guys ass on the feet, so you take it to the ground? Or stand over him instead of finishing?

Faber's Muay Thai coach jsut thanked Aldo

Probably for not finishing him and letting him survive

by Mad A on Apr 25, 2010 12:32 AM EDT reply actions

I agree

it definitely seemed like a mercy-style finish… he knew he had already beat Urijah and KOing/TKOing him may have added insult to injury

by fentsky on Apr 25, 2010 12:34 AM EDT up reply actions

With Aldo failing to try to finish the fight, and rather stand around, I’m glad I didn’t pay for this PPV.

I'm pretty sure that Goldberg would suck Uriah's dick if had the chance...

You wouldn’t even know that Aldo was the champ by listening to Goldie.

“That’s why everyone is in love with Uriah Faber”

I must say I am getting tired of these Ed Soares managed fighters taking the championship rounds off and playing it safe. Nonetheless, congrats to Aldo.

Ok let's see

Henderson- submission of the night
Manny- KO of the night
Leonard Garcia Chan Sung Jung- fight of the night

I missed it, what he said?

by mythbuster on Apr 25, 2010 12:37 AM EDT up reply actions

he basically said

he always tries to finish the fight, but that Urijah was switching up stances and that he respected his right cross enough from Faber’s other stance that he didn’t want to take any chances

by fentsky on Apr 25, 2010 12:42 AM EDT up reply actions

hmmmm

sounds like a Silva excuse :(

haha fair enough,

though you have to at least give him the credit for putting on some pressure for the last two rounds. He may not have finished but he didn’t make an embarrassment out of the sport like Silva.

by fentsky on Apr 25, 2010 12:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Well he would have looked stupid if Faber did a Lawler-Manhoef on him in the final round

He dominated for 20 minutes and coasted in the final round, sure the finish would have been nice but that doesn’t take away from the 4 rounds of domination. And it’s not like he disrespected Faber if anything he had too much respect for him as he didn’t go for the kill in the 5th.

it was super close

I’d hate to judge it. Jung is tough! I think it’s a smart play to air this at the end, leave off with the fight of the night. some might not have caught it earlier

by Mad A on Apr 25, 2010 12:42 AM EDT up reply actions

anybody feel like Aldo might be able to bulk up to lightweight?

just curious – if he bulked up right I think he’d be a contender.

by fentsky on Apr 25, 2010 12:38 AM EDT reply actions

same

Though it’s hard to tell how well he will do. UFC lightweight division is a shark tank. That said aldo is only 23 so who knows.

by pbdb on Apr 25, 2010 1:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes

He’s a big FW and is still only 23, he has plenty of time to bulk up to 155 and he’ll dominate that division when he does.

Rogan why he slowed at the end, was it just because he was ahead, etc. and Aldo responded by saying that he always tries to finish his fights, but in the later rounds Faber kept switching his stance, and Faber has a dangerous right cross that he wanted to stay aware of and not do anything stupid.

by jk358 on Apr 25, 2010 12:44 AM EDT reply actions

sorry that was to mythbusters question

Overall an amazing night of fights...

if it’s the UFC’s plan to combine UFC and WEC, then I’m all for it… by adding some fights from the lighter weight classes the UFC cards would be unbelievable. That said, if they do merge I would hope that the UFC expands their relationship with Versus to include at least 4-6 cars per year.

Sounds like Rogan has been getting too much Schiavello lately.

by prokstar on Apr 25, 2010 12:52 AM EDT reply actions

Anyone notice there are no WEC ads anywhere...

Not in the ring, not on the mics… They dont even mention them, its just aldo vs faber everywhere…

Anyone know whats up with that??

Agreed, strange

Seems like Zuffa were distancing themselves from the WEC, doesn’t look good for that organisation as an entity. As long as they keep putting on stacked cards with the smaller guys I’ll still buy them, WEC brand or not.
