James Toney: 'I want Brock Lesnar'

Toney-lesnar_medium

That's according to "Lights Out" on tonight's episode of Inside MMA:

"I want Brock Lesnar. I'm the heavyweight champion of the world vs. the UFC champion. That'd be a hell of a match ... Chuck Liddell, Brock Lesnar, Randy Couture, Tito, Tito Ortiz-whatever his name is, it doesn't matter. I'm not a sideshow. This is the real deal right here."

In other words, he's looking for a massive payday so that he can be one and done. Do any Toney sympathizers have an argument for the aging pugilist upsetting the current heavyweight champion? Hard to imagine he could land even one shot before getting a double-leg right through the cage door -- but I guess anything can happen, right? To find out what else he said about the crop of Zuffa heavyweights, tune in tonight at 9:00 p.m. ET on HDNet.

sorry,

the ‘fracker’ comment-“frack” is a word that they use in that show to replace “fuck”. my roomate just started watching the show and he was telling me about it. i usually see “fock” as the word to use on here, so i thought ‘frack’ was possibly some battlestar coming out in you lol. sorry, i havent had more than 3 hrs of sleep a night all week, so forgive me if i soud a little out of it.

He would take more than two mins

I would demand it be a title fight so it goes all five round with Brock shaggin the shit out of him. Also paying the ref off so he want stop the fight as much as Toney taps due to strike from the top. Ahhh made me all happy in side just thinking about that there. The funny thing is am not a Brock fan but I would be right behind him If that fight was to ever take place.

I would want him to take more than 2 minutes i would want that fight to go the distance just so it would be more damage inflicted on lights out foney than he would really need to take. Just so he would fuck off quicker than he came in.

Im sick of people saying that Fedor is not a technical striker.......

His standard method of attack is to maintain distance and then burst in to strike with hooks, committing hard to the attack and then either initiating a clinch or pulling back to a distance. This is based off the striking in combat sambo, where if you remain close to your opponent without clinching or throw multiple light strikes, they will catch your jacket and throw you. Strikes in sambo don’t gain you much in the way of points, so you have to throw with serious intent to hurt every time – this is evident in Fedor’s style.

His method is possible because he has amazing reflex time and footwork, much of which can only really be appreciated by watching in slow motion or just watching his feet or head – watch his entire body at normal speed and it won’t be very evident what he is doing. He stays on his toes, bounces around, and then shifts that momentum forward to attack, which is why countering him is hard. The one consistent opening is to counter him when he attacks full out, but he hides this opening well. His reflex time is off the charts and so far he has been able to recover his defenses after every wild-looking swing.

AA did manage to have some success with a counter striking strategy based on straight punches (something I had argued for previously) but he did very little damage in actuality as Kusok and agonzalez pointed out in a thread I believe is entitled “Fedor facts” suffice to say, that almost every punch AA threw and was actually defended with head movement or shoulder rolls.

Check out “Fedor facts” then rewatch the AA fight. Watch Nog II and CC, particularly CC to see him win on the feet in style. Hopefully this response answers most of your question – don’t examine his style from a MT, boxing, or kickboxing perspective, view it from a combat sambo perspective and see how it translates to MMA, then factor in his physical gifts.

by John G. on Mar 12, 2010 5:05 PM EST up reply actions

Good post John. Depends how you define “technical”, I guess. He is certainly awesome in some technical aspects of striking, but since he never sets up his power shots with a jab, and tends to exclusively wing haymakers, the untrained eye could see his striking as sloppy.

What Fedor does would probably only work for Fedor, because of the gifts he has that you alluded to. So in that sense he is not technical, because you wouldn’t want to teach a beginner that style. But in the sense that he is accurate, has good timing and footwork, and knows how to use his body to sit down on his shots to get every ounce of power out of them, he is very technical. Like I said, depends on the definition.

Shit, I just assisted your thread jack. Oh well.

I know alot of people think dana is all about the money

but the fact that this fight wont happen proves that he puts the integrity of the sport above money. i believe that Dana actaully cares alot about the sport and wants it to grow, but giving someone with 0 mma fights a shot at the most prestigous mma title in the world would take away from the sport’s integrity. and he even knows that brock would smash him. brock played around with a little stand up in the 2nd mir fight, but no way would he even think of standing with toney for a second. it would be a complete mauling.

I dont understand all the hate towards Toney

He isnt calling out retires like Tito. He wants to fight top shelf competition. Whats wrong with that? Sure he hasnt earned his bones in mma, but I will never hate a guy for wanting to fight real fighters not cans. Lastly Dana and the Fertitas are about making money guys they dont run a non profit organization. Believe it or not there are fighters who are gonna want to stand with Toney cause they’ll want to test themselves against a striker with big hands. Some fighters fight for the check and hype but alot fight to test themselves and see how good they actually are or will be. Just enjoy the fights. Alot of guys on here remind me of the fans that boo when the action goes to the mat. Fuck I miss Pride, intelligent fans who enjoy all aspects of a fight and you could hear a pin drop when two guys were doing switches for 4 minutes.

Very well said except

The Pride intelligent fans part. You must be new on here becasue many of the fans on here were Pride fans. Some fans wether they were Pride fans or not prefer the stand up to the ground game and is nothing new to MMA. If you actually look at the fan fauvorites in Pride the large majority was also stand up fighters from Wandy, Rua, Fedor, Belfort. Cro Cop and others were some of the biggest draws. I myself loved the ground game as well as the stand up and fighters like barnett and NOG were always a pleasure to watch. I agree the booing of some fans is brutal but for the most part especially on this site respect all styles, if you watched the NOG and Randy fight there was very few boos and many excited fans watching to ground artist battle. But when I fighter has another fighter down and does little damage and little action is happening I think the booos are warranted.

Does anybody disagree those would all be reasonable fights? If not please respond and ill share my opinion why

He is a decent sized LHW which would be a good fit since we dont know where JT will be fighting

He is a top level wrestler with heavy but wild hands. He is exactly the type of MMA fighter that boxing purists often say would be picked apart by a pro-boxer. This could be a perfect test for that theory.

Hamill has great heart and a decent chin, plus a loss would not really hurt his career that much and a win could do him wonders! I think he has a reasonable ‘name’ for Toney to fight considering he has 0 MMA fights to his name.

IMHO – Toney would win

Not so much of a disagreement as an observation, just seems the majority of those guys would be willing to stand and trade with Toney. Even Hamill can get lulled into forgetting his wrestling and slugging it out.

I think match-ups depend on what exactly they’re planning to do with him. Does Dana want to show a boxer getting beat to prove MMA is better, or do they want to build him up? Is it confirmed yet whether he’d fight at HW or 205?

TONEY IS A TOP LEVEL ATHLETE

Underneath all that fat, there may still be an athlete, but really? Do you believe the shit you are spewing? What makes you think Toney can wrestle better than Alexander? Toney doesn’t even know what a leg kick is, what makes you think he can stop a takedown once?

KO’s Everyone on that list that CHOOSES to stand with him.

Why would anyone choose to stand with him? You win by taking away your opponents strength. Only fools try to take an opponent at his strength. Read Sun Tzu. People have known that for thousands of years.

And for the record, I like Toney and have defended his position, but you sir, take the boxing love a little too far. Boxing is one aspect of MMA, but has NEVER proven to neutralize good grappiling EVER.

UFC wants Toney around...

I’m thinking the UFC/MMA has peaked when it komes to demographic and or fan base… News of Toney signing with the biggest, most legit MMA organization in the world has already gained the interest of new fans, and not the fans interested in a FREAK SHOW… Toney’s a legit fighter/brawler, someone new and hardcore fans are interested in seeing fight… Hardcore fans will accept him after he records that first KnockOut of the night;) The UFC will give him kompetitive fights or fighters he has a khance to beat impressively… LOL!!! Kan anyone imagine the trash talking we would get from Toney if he wins??? We may see the first UFC kasualty!!! The headlines will read, “Toney implodes in ring during post fight interview following brutal first round KO victory”!!!

by Dakatak on Mar 12, 2010 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

My opinion is based on...

The UFC’s product has kaptured its primary or intended/target audience… This means the UFC needs something and or SOMEONE new to promote (they are in the fighter/fight PROMOTION business)… Its a business 1st Dakatak, and like any good kompany they are kontinuously looking to expand their business, which in this kase is DEMOGRAPHIC and or FAN BASE…

The UFC brings in foreign non-domestic fighters, who get their ASSes handed to them, all the time… Does not matter to much if they win or lose, so long as they get more ppl to watch the UFC…

by DADEAL1 on Mar 12, 2010 4:31 PM EST up reply actions

I get that it's a business.

What I don’t agree with is this: “The UFC’s product has kaptured its primary or intended/target audience”

You’re being either naive or insulated to believe that the UFC has peaked (or even captured the majority of) for its intended audience: males, ages 18-34. The UFC doesn’t try to bring in new types of long-term viewers with these signings… it’s just trying to capture the attention of the mainstream because it will bolster the publicity and get the word out. But make no mistake, Dana and Co. are still after the 18-34 year old men… anyone else who latches on is icing on the cake.

Albino Mormon 4 Life

by Dakatak on Mar 12, 2010 5:20 PM EST up reply actions

So the UFC and Boxing have the same audience???

Two very similiar sports who have different audiences…

They both have much of the same audience when it komes to age, but boxing has a much broader (age) diverse (kulture) audience … Well, they use to anyways (no one really watches boxing, except for blockbuster fights)…

They’re many different variables that play a factor in who watches MMA…The MMA fan base will stay young and male due to the industries that back it… Off hand I kan think of two (2), Klothes and Sports suppliments… The OLDER and more Kulturally diverse audiences the UFC needs to expand will not buy in to the UFC/MMA for those reasons alone… I see your point, but I feel there is a way for them to keep males, ages18-34 (mainstream, bread and butter) and expand their audience base at the same time…

by DADEAL1 on Mar 12, 2010 8:26 PM EST up reply actions

Thanks for the clarification

I think we’re saying the same thing. The UFC’s audience can grow in depth and breadth, meaning the core base of 18-34 is nowhere near tapped (which is how I interpretted your original post), and there are lots of other demographics that can be brought on board. I think we’re on the same page when I say I don’t think the two are mutually exclusive, and that simply because you want to expand into other demographics it doesn’t mean that you’ve reached the pinnacle of your core demo.

personally in my own humble opinion......

there is no difference to jt entering mma, than there was to a multiple time karate champion like lyoto machida, or a multiple time bjj champion like demian or a multiple time wrestling champion like brock and every one else entering mma. if toney thinks he can enter and succeed in mma with only one discipline under his belt, no matter how good he is at that discipline, (and imo the weakest mma discipline), he is going to learn some painful lessons, especially when he carries so much “non lean muscle”( to be kind to him), yes every fight starts standing, but i doubt he would make it out of the first round against anyone.

Aww leave zackey alone

I understand and respect your outlook on boxing. But you have to realize Toney is 1 dimensional (as far as we know).

Putting him against any top 10 HW? Let alone JDS is ludacris. He will leg kick him to death before he even gets in close to punch him.

Just when JT thinks the leg kicks wont stop in comes the TD. In the case JDS has to obv advantage.

Put him in with anyone that has half the wrestling ability and he will get taken down within the first 30 sceonds and G&P’d. I have nothing against boxing , but it’s a well known fact that MMA fighters need to work very hard to be well rounded so they are not out of their element completely and taken advantage of due to their lack of skill in a certain area of MMA. Toney may be the most skilled boxer to ever enter the MMA world, but if he doesn’t have an amazing sprawl he will lose 9 out of 10 against a well rounded opponent. The best BJJ guy will usually lose if not well rounded. Same goes for being the “best” at any one skill involved in MMA. Wrestling, Kickboxing, MuiTai, …

imo toney will be one of the worst strikers in mma...

has he ever used his knees, elbows, high/low kicks, palm heel strickes, etc etc…. whoever he fights it will be a massacre…. even if he fights someone like houston alexander or kimbo, he will be taken down and subbed or g&p’d

The question is (and I still don't know the answer)

Has Toney been practicing MMA for a long time. Is this a project he’s been working on for a long time. Until I find that out, I can’t assume too much about him.

and apart from the size of the gloves, his boxing defence, (defence depends alot of the size of the gloves, especially when absorbing head punches on the gloves, and taking punches on the arms, as you well know), it will be up there…100%

no, i agree with my initial statement, he will have good hands and boxing defense....

but someone with only 2 weapons in an 8 weaponed striking match, however good he is with those two weapons, can not be classed an elite mma striker when he can only take advantage of 25% of the tools available to him. i may be proved wrong, but at this time when he is 0-0, this conclusion is the only logical conclusion my brain arrives at. so not excellent.

by freedomthrtyfve on Mar 12, 2010 4:34 PM EST up reply actions

By definition, An MMA fighter with “excellent hands” (as you just admitted) can not be “one of the worst strikers in MMA”, since at least half of the guys in MMA can’t strike for shit. Pull your head out, Freedom. You’re better than this.

Sort of.

again i disagree,

what would happen if he fought a really good m/t striker when they got in the clinch, and he had a pair of hands clasped behind his neck and 25% of the striking attack he doesn’t have,(knees), tenderising his mid section and jaw?
what would happen if fighting a good kickboxer that decided he would utilise 25% of the striking that toney doesn’t have by standing out of range and taking toneys legs out? etc etc

There is many questions to be answered for sure

But if he has a decent takedown D as half as good as chucks or pages he might be able to beat a good all around MMA fighter. As Chuck and Page have shown little ground game in the UFC and are able to keep it standing to use their boxing as well they keep their distance so they don’t get into a clinch. Now I don’t think his takedown D will be as good as those guys but if it’s half as good he can be a scary MMA fighter for anybody to go against because of his KO power

Yeah I think the smartest thing to do is keep

Your guard up and close the gap as quick as possible and get it into a grappling match. Why mess with Fire when you have a huge advantage on the inside. I doubt Toney will be able to stop anybody with decent takedown.

There you go. Some logic. Standing with Toney is giving him a chance to use the one MMA skill he has that will be superior to his opponents’. Take him down and you’ll win the fight. Stand with him and you might discover that having a more varied striking arsenal won’t save you from getting KO’d.

Kimbo’s ground skills aren’t much better than Toney’s starting from scratch. And Toney is a better athlete who will probably learn faster (if he has actual intentions of competing and isn’t just looking for a quick payday). Kimbo would be completely outmatched.

I can’t believe there are actually people in the world who think Kimbo, a street boxer, could beat Toney standing up. It is breathtakingly ignorant, and speaks to the lack of boxing knowledge on this site. It’s like a guy who’s never watched baseball announcing to a baseball forum who would win a home run derby after doing absolutely no research.

Someone is going to die. That is given the fact that he has perfect technique and doesnt just clip someone on their way in. Boxing for Boxing if he connects, there may be a death in mma

really?

enough about MMA fighters not being able to trade with boxers already. Boxers don’t knock everyone out with one punch, they’re not superhuman. MMA fighters train in boxing as well…..they may not be world class, but it’s no different than a wrestler fighting a kickboxer in that both fighters have trained in each discipline enough to survive in the fight. They may not always be playing to their strengths at any given moment in the fight, but they know what they’re doing to a great extent.

Yep

and if the MMArtist is smart about how he fights he can really mitigate the KO risk significantly. Whereas a straight-up boxer (or any single disciplined fighter) has to deal with a variety of threats.

James Toney doesn't even belong in the heavyweight division

He should exercise some discipline and lose the fatbody. When he was truely great as a boxer, he was fighting in the middleweight and super middleweight divisions. He’s gotten lazy and let himself go. I guess fortunately for him, he has a remarkable chin and good power, which has allowed him to achieve some “success” in boxing’s heavyweight division. For fighting mma, at 185 he would would be much quicker and actually have a realistic chance, in my opinion, of not embarassing himself. I thinks it’s an insult to everyone’s intelligence for him to call out Lesnar as if he’s being serious.

what an idiot

he called out 2 light heavyweights and Brock….this guy has no idea what real fighting is and how much of a tiny part of fighting that boxing is. Wrestling alone gets you KO’d or choked out or submitted. Boxing alone gets you taken down and pounded out, choked, submitted ot ko’d by a knee or kick. Jiu-jitsu alone gets you Nate vs Damian. You cannot be one dementional. Please pick someone with some good wrestling or a really good kicker like cro cop to send this boxing fool to retirement with a broken jaw. I hope he gets KO’d on the feet by a kick that would shut boxing fans up. Most boxing fans are over the age of 40 anyway and have no clue about mma
