The Greatest "Iconic" Moments In MMA........

This question has probably been asked and re asked about a thousand times, and probably very recently, but 'm not letting that discourage me.

Every sport has its iconic moments, Ali beating Foreman, Douglas beating Tyson, Usain "lightening" Bolt destroying every one in his path, Dan Marino appearing in "Ace Ventura, Pet Detective", and Michael Shumacher appearing to be the stig onTop Gear.

But on a serious note, alot of my favourite moments include Scott Smith and Minitauro, and alot of their unbelievable "Snatching victory from the jaws of defeat", or "Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory" for their opponents, moments.

There are many moments that make us utter "what the f**k", but some standout more than others.

My personal favourites include,:

Bobb Sapp against Mintauro, for various reasons.

Fedor against Kevin Randleman, for obvious reasons.

And any Scott Smith fight where he has had his ass whooped and knocked his opponent "the f**k out" for also obvious reasons.

And also a noteable mention to Robbie Lawler for his fight against Melvin.

But, my personal favourite is when Mr Anderson Silva was crab clawed.

You may say that these are not "Iconic moments", but they are to me.

Which are your favourites?

One that springs to mind quickly

Is Forrest tapping Shogun. Always been a fan of Griffin (not delusional, don’t think he’s p4p or even top 10 of LHW), but never thought he had a chance on that fight. When he tapped Shogun, I jumped round screaming. That and Chuck KO’ing Randy the first time, and Randy controlling Tito were great to see the first time round and in the heat if the moment

When You Say Running Around That Reminds Me

of the time when Fedor KO’s Arlovski. Soon as Arlovski had landed my love seat had been flipped over. Also I agree when Forrest won that fight I was like umm… is that you Shogun?

Fedor/Randleman still makes me smile

Fedor invented a language that incorporates Sambo and Kimuras.

So next time FEDOR is kicking your ass, don't be offended or hurt, he may be just trying to tell you he likes your hat.

Aldo's flying knee on Cub Swanson.

I realized this kid could not only be great, but an all-time great.

one of my greatest moments was when....

chuck fought wanderlei at 79, nemesis, the whole card was fantastic, and sokodju entered with the predator mask on.

That was Great.

Now I am not racist but by black friend who was with me when he came out was jumping all over the place. He thought it was the greatest thing. I knew he’d lose though.

i would say hughes vs newton but its too early in his career

Fedor played Russian Roulette with a fully loaded gun and won.

Hughes Trigg 2 was nice

That was back when I liked Matt Hughes, and that comeback was amazing!

by LJ. on Mar 11, 2010 2:00 PM EST up reply actions

My favourite ever fight has to be Chuck-Wandi, that was a brutal war between 2 legends and lived up to the insane hype. Both men proved to the world that for one night at least they still had it.

As for iconic moments, in no particular order they include Smith’s comebacks against Dung, Sell and Benji. Those were 3 crazy finishes and I was going wild when Smith won. Watching Nog’s comebacks against Cro Cop and Sylvia was awesome as well.

Also seeing Andy’s masterclass in striking against Franklin (both times) and Forrest was amazing, the way that he made 2 former champions look like amateurs and dodged their punches matrix style before countering with his own strikes was a pleasure to watch. Seeing Andy destroy Franklin the first time and GSP smash Hughes the first time was what got me into MMA to begin with.

Same here David , the comeback that Big Nog did on cro cop is 1 of the if not the best in mma history!

Big Nog showed 1 of the biggest hearts I’ve ever seen in that fight. How can any1 forget rampage flying head 1st thru the rope after getting murdered by Wand? That had 2 be my personal fav =D

by d*locc on Mar 12, 2010 4:25 PM EST up reply actions

That was priceless

Both Wand-Rampage fights in Pride were epic. Those beatdowns sum up his legacy better than any other, even the Sakaraba ones.

For Me

Royce Gracie slapping the triangle on Dan Severn in the open weight UFC final. Most people did not even know what Gracie was doing, all of a sudden Severn was tapping. Great moment.
Next two are Fedor fighting CroCop, which was such a huge fight, and Lidell KO’ing The Natural in the rubber match

No problem Freedom

There are so many others, these just stand out to me. Having been a fan for 15 years, I have seen a lot of fights. These left a real impression due to the magnitude of the fights and that they delivered. A few others that are personal favorites, not just signifigant MMA moments:
Vitor KO’ing Tank in about a minute. Tank was seriously feared at that time, since he has been slowly forgotten.
Sakuraba beating Gracie: Gracie was almost considered unbeatable.
Randy spanking Tito: simply put, awesome
Hendo KO’ing Wand in Vegas for the title. Last of Pride, Wand in the US for the first time in a long time. It was an amazing fight and Wand has not looked the same since.
Ruas leg kicking 6’8’’ Paul Varleans into submission. First time we saw leg kicks work.
Forrest v Bonnar: Don’t like either fighter, but can’t deny what it did for the sport

by domino effect on Mar 11, 2010 11:17 AM EST up reply actions

Tito bowing at Frank's feet begging for mercy

tapping out from strikes, and then putting on a Frank Shamrock T-Shirt for the official announcement. To my knowledge this is the only time Tito took defeat like a man and admitted that his opponent was the superior fighter.

This was the greatest moment in MMA history!

Randy spanking Tito was a close second.

Royce winning the first tourney
Randy beating Chuck, shocking the world, & becoming the first ever 2 division champ.
Rampage slamming Arona
GSP beating his icon Hughes
Fedor vs CroCop
Vitor’s 1min KO of Wandy
Sakuraba vs Newton (greatest grappling match ever)
Sakuraba vs Royce (90min war, 1st Gracie loss)
Andy’s destruction of Rich & introducing a new era
GSP vs Penn II
CroCop getting KOd by his own trademark high kick
Frank Shamrock making Tito beg
him to stop
Griffin vs Bonnar
Marco Rua introducing leg kicks to MMA by chopping down goliath Paul Varleans
Brock’s destruction of Randy
Frye vs Coleman
Frye vs Takayama (craziest slugfest ever)

The ones that stand out from this list, at least for me,

Fedor vs Cro Cop, so much hype( maybe the wrong word but can’t think of anything else) behind that fight.

Sakuraba vs Royce, the Gracie killer is born.

CroCop getting KOd by his own trademark high kick, just Wow.

Frank Shamrock making Tito beg him to stop, Awesome.

Machida vs Shogun. It’s a new one but I would consider it “iconic”.

For me there are a few moments which I think have already been mentioned
chuck vs wand lived up to all the hype even tho was probably a few years late in happening.
Gsp vs bj 2 maybe a fight that didn’t quite match the build up but the moment after te bell when gsp got up and punched the cage had me going crazy!!!!
Randy vs timmy never been a big fan of randy but when that punch landed it sure a hell had me of my seat cheering.
Shogun vs machida, I was so happy to see the old shogun back even of he got screwed with the decision in my opinion. Great fight nonetheless.

I think of iconic moments...

as one that most people can look back and remember a decade later as if it just happened the night before or one that universally changed some aspect of MMA as a sport. Some have already been mentioned, but that said, my top picks are (in no particular order):

1) Cro-cop getting KO’d by a head kick
2) Serra KO’ing GSP
3) Fedor vs Cro-cop
4) Bonnar vs Forrest (don’t care for either guy, but brought about the TUF era and helped MMA go more mainstream)
5) Kimbo vs Seth (exposed a poser and brought about the downfall of an entire org in one fight)
6) Any early UFC where Royce Gracie dominated big men using jits
7) Hendo’s KO of Bisping (you know it’s good when they start using your name as a pseudo-verb: “He just got Bisping’d!”
8) UFC buys out Pride

Albino Mormon 4 Life

I think of iconic moments as moments that made me turn into a MMA fan

There are many great moments but to be iconic moments I will list my top five.

5) Royce Gracie and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu early dominance in the UFC and the mystory of JJ that was very unkown at the time, against many other styles is one of my earliest memories and still remains with me today as one biggest reasons I became a MMA fan.

4) Wanderlie Silva need I say more? I will anyway Royce got me hooked and Wandy reeled me into MMA fan 4Life. His furious style and determination against the worlds best at the time, with great success, gave me the same kind of feeling as a fan that Tyson did for me in boxing.

3) Forrest vs Bonnar on TUF one of MMA biggest turning points into connecting MMA with todays mainstream sports. And even though the fighters may not of been top ranked fighters at the time it was a great battle with both fighters putting everything they had on the line. A great fight and great turning point for the UFC & MMA.

2) Dana White love him or hate him he’s always a subject in MMA talked about and with out a doubt the most as a non-fighter. He is also one of the main reasons in North America that has helped legalized MMA and reasons MMA is becoming as big as it is.

1) UFC take over of Pride combining most of the best fighters in the world to compete against eachother and forming the #1 organization of the world. What would MMA be like today if this didn’t happen?

Randy VS, Big Nog is one of my favorite fights ever! Especially because everyone had written Nog off after the Mir fight and he came roaring back. And the fact that Couture was able to power his way out of and defend those submissions made it even more dramatic! I also love the Frye-Takayama moment at the end of the first round when they are both dirty boxing and the whole place just goes NUTS!
