weird...

i agreed with the rankings for each particular weight class but just looking at this it doesnt really look right…i bet you that if you did a poll asking for our opinions of pound for pound rankings it would come out different than this list

by magicmike on Mar 10, 2010 12:48 PM EST reply actions

Fedor would probably win such a poll.

we've had this thread 10 times min.

and GSP has never been #1. not saying it’s a bad thread, but how many fan posts a day do we really need?

i guess

all these polls and B.S. rankings just make decent fan posts go off page quicker (not just mine)!

Andy won my P4P poll, so that's the main thing haha

"Not a lot of professional sports down here (in Australia)"
"We just had our best season (of TUF) last season and it was season 10"
"Nogueira is probabaly the best HW of all time"

Dana White, proving that he's clueless about Australian sports, has never heard of Fedor and is still trying to hype up TUF 10.

I come at least half a dozen times a day

to check the news, and if there is nothing new I check the fan posts. Rankings are an interesting read, I like seeing the stats and people’s opinion on fighters, not reading some guy who is a fan like any other here write about what he thought of the fights on the weekend . What is considered decent is rec’d to the top by the majority. Good work with the stats, interesting results.

Yeah

I happen to think Lesnar should be considered #1 heavyweight but put his exact same skills lets say in some other divisions he becomes a Thiago Alves (I know they are not the exact same style) that gets beat by GSP 9 times out of 10 lol.

you dont know what you're talkin bout.

Tito interviewing Babalu: "I want to tell me what you see, let's go ahead and see by the fight, what you saw, in the ring."

Tito interviewing Fedor: "Let me tell you how you feeling right now?"

by Two_Words on Mar 10, 2010 1:02 PM EST up reply actions

that’s exactly the kind of thing I’m talking about below, Keelo! Machida beating Penn when they are 3 weight divisions apart has absolutely no bearing on Penn’s P4P greatness. P4P doesn’t mean, “if there were no weight limits, who would win”.

by (shonuff) on Mar 10, 2010 1:07 PM EST up reply actions

Does K33LO

realize we are talking p4p? If Bobby Lashley went in against BJ Penn and knew enough about submission defense and sat on him or GnP him to a victory would you put Lashley above BJ???

by Edgecrusher71 on Mar 11, 2010 9:17 PM EST up reply actions

GSP by unanimous domination!

This shows that using the level of a fighter’s perceived dominance of his own weight class as the definition of P4P, GSP is king. Notice GSP also has the biggest gap in points between him and any other competitor in his weight class, a full 20%. That is true dominance!

Of course, PHISH could do a simple poll to see who Maniacs think is P4P #1, but I’m pretty sure that’s been done several times before and the problem was that everyone seemed to have a different definition of what P4P meant, some defining it as above, others by jumping weight classes, others by “who would win if they fought”.

by (shonuff) on Mar 10, 2010 1:04 PM EST reply actions

The only reason that Andy didn't get 100% is because some idiot picked Sexyama as the #1 MW just before Phish finished the polls

BJ should have had 100% as well, but one person gave it to Aoki instead

Shame that both lists were ruined by one person. At least the majority of us can agree on who the top 4 P4P are, shame that bias cost Andy and BJ their deserved 100% status.

I don’t think Andy is the best MW in the world but I ranked him there just based on his record. If I ranked who I thought was best like phish did (put Andy at no 1 in LHW)my top 10 would be totally different.

Who's better?

I know you don’t like Andy mate, but name one MW better than him today. I tried to keep mine impartial and realistic, which is more than I can say for some people.

I think he would lose to Sonnen, Belfort, Marquardt in a rematch, hendo in a rematch…

even people like the philipino wrecking machine I think would beat him. not to mention GSP, who is better than anyone I’ve mentioned and if he ever decides to go up will beat Silva.

As I said, I ranked him no 1 in respect to his accomplishments in that weight class but my lists don’t reflect who I think is best. If we all did that (like Phish) the list would be totally arbitrary and meaningless.

I forgot to mention Shields, who would also beat Andy (basically a better version of Maia).

So I just listed 8 ppl who I all would bet on even money against Andy. Silva’s only good win is against Dan Henderson, who gassed in the 2nd round and won the first. Franklin has never beaten any A level fighters and Forrest Griffin is a joke.

I also left off Maia basically because I don’t think Maia is good, but that being said, he still has a chance to beat Andy. I could have left off Marq as well he’s probably the most dubious one on that list but aside from him I’m pretty much convinced that the rest would win. If he decides to stay at MW then I hope that my view will be vindicated.

by frosnt1 on Mar 11, 2010 10:36 AM EST up reply actions

Isn't Nate a good win?

Shields is good but would be far too small to beat Andy and his BJJ isn’t as good as Demian’s, Jacare would be a threat, Hendo and Nate both lost the first time and I doubt that either would win a rematch as Hendo’s cardio is not good enough and his cardio is wreckless whilst Nate has no BJJ skills off his back and his wrestling isn’t good enough, Belfort would be a threat but he pulled out so we may never know, Sonnen is too easy to submit and isn’t a good enough striker to beat Andy and GSP has never fought at 185. As for Munoz that doesn’t even warrant a response.

You are way underestimating Andy’s skills and records, you dismiss his wins yet claim that the guys that he’s beaten are better than him and that former champions aren’t that good. Out of all of the guys that you mentioned I only see Jacare, Sonnen and Vitor as being major threats, the other guys are either too one dimensional or have already lost to the better man. As much as you don’t want to admit it you’ll one day have to accept that no 185er has done more or is more talented than Anderson Silva, until someone can beat him and dominate the division then that will remain the case.

You dont know what your talkin about silva would murder all those guys your talkin about and sayin that shields is a better version than maia your crazy maia would eat shields for breakfast the guy is a modern day royce gracie good bjj and no stand up at all,at least maia willing to stand with peolple and get knocked out in the process, chael would get subbed within one round or knocked out with a flying knee while hes shooting for a take down you need to think before you speak you prob bj penn’s overated to

I take issue with brock being on this

P4P ranking is a skills based ranking, take away brocks size and you wonder, are his skills alone enough to take out almost 90% of the fighters in the world?

Fedor played Russian Roulette with a fully loaded gun and won.

AMERICA.....FUCK YEAH

by brendog on Mar 10, 2010 1:08 PM EST reply actions

no, take away 25-30 lbs from him and he's going to have enormous problems being the hw champ.

he would have lost to Randy for sure if he wasn’t so goddamn big.

there's still something so unifying about sport in it's purest form, when athletes rise above themselves and touch greatness and in doing so remind us all that we also have greatness inside of us.

true dat, Roberto!

Randy was giving him a helluva fight before he got caught. If they were within even 25 lbs of each other, Randy would have won that. But a 60 lbs differential is too much to give up against an experienced wrestler, no matter who you are.

My first thoughts mirrored this as well...

Plus we are missing the little guys (135 and 145) When factoring in the lower weight classes, at least Aldo, maybe Brown, Faber or Cruz make the list.

This poll does not tell me who the top P4P guys are. All this tells me is that 90% (roughly) of the maniacs are in concensus on the top 3 in each division.
Fedor – Brock – Cain
Dragon-Shogun-Evans
Spider-Hendo-Sonnen
GSP-Alves-Fitch
BJ-Kenny-Aoki

The fact that Evans is 17th, instead of 15th, tells you the strength at LHW. Meaning that Page and Forrest garnered some of Evans #3 votes.

Not trying to bashm PHISH, because I think on a weight-class basis, this is great, but without factoring the lower weight classes or adding the apparent strength or weakness in the divsion, the numbers are flawed on a P4P basis.

Only thing wrong with the P4P list is that the lower weights are ignored

I’d also like to see guys given credit for success in multiple weights, because it proves their dominance in more than one division so we don’t need to know hypothetically who is the best if they were the same size if someone like Andy can make different weights and still dominate championship caliber fighters.

Good job anyway mate, I know people are whining about the HWs are included but this was the fairest way to do a P4P list as Brock got a large percentage of votes and was more dominant in his division than the smaller guys, I don’t think that it’s fair to discount someone from being the best overall fighter just because they’re big. The problem with most of them is that nobody agrees on what being a P4P great is, whilst I think that you have to be a dominant world champion in one division and be able to move up or down in weight and still dominate others completely ignore multi-weight success or just pick their favourite fighter as being the P4P best. Realistically, aside from ignoring the FWs and BWs, this is the best possible list.

and it's Mania's List right?

There are a lot of rankings but I put more stock in the opinions of those who I have debated over the yeards. Or at least read countless threads with others debating a topic.

We should do a Media Blast to announce the MMA MANIA rankings.
