WEC Quick Quote: Urijah Faber plans on fighting the best guys in the sport regardless of division

Urijah-faber-nc_medium

"I could go down to 135 pounds if he (Torres) wants to fight. I'm here for a long time so I'll probably fight everybody. Miguel is in there. (Mike) Brown, I'm going to fight him again. (Jose) Aldo, I'll take care of that. I didn't know for sure if Miguel would come to 145 and he's got his hands full with my boy Joseph Benavidez (on March 6), so we'll see how he does there first before I even think about fighting him.... That's a super fight (with B.J. Penn). I've thought about that. B.J. and I went to a USO show together. We're buddies and we've trained together but we're in the fight game to find out who's the man and I'm sure B.J. doesn't have a problem fighting me and I don't have a problem fighting him. We'd be buddies after."

-- Former WEC featherweight champion Urijah "The California Kid" Faber talks about his big plans in the sport at UFC 109's fighter Q&A. Never one to lack confidence in his own game, Faber seems to have his sights set on some impressive accomplishments before his career is over. It certainly doesn't hurt the WEC as a promotion that is trying to build their brand that their biggest name possesses such lofty expectations. Question is, would Faber have a chance to walk away as the victor in fights with Miguel Torres or B.J. Penn, let alone in his upcoming bout with dynamo Jose Aldo at WEC 48? Let's hear it, Maniacs.

my thoughts exactly

His hands are full with aldo, sure I see miguel as a possibility but bj, hold on buddy.
I don’t wanna think of what bj would do to him, and urijah is one of my favs

its his personality that people are a fan of though, he’s exciting, it’s not like he’s great though, BJ is great!

by kevjack115 on Feb 9, 2010 10:24 PM EST up reply actions

I also like his style, he tries cool moves, not scared to take a risk,, tho at times he was put out, but boring far from imo.

by Phenomenal Angel on Feb 9, 2010 10:29 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Faber is crazy....

The only fight that he mentioned that would even be remotely competitive would be against torres (only because of his strength advantage). He’s going to lose to Aldo… And BJ? He’s lost his mind. He wouldn’t be able to beat any of the top 5 LWs, much less BJ. Hell, why not fight GSP too..? LOL

Time to snap back to reality faber.

No chance against bj

Uriah is an athlete but his fighting skills aren’t that great. Bj would rip him up…this wouldn’t even be fair.

I agree totally...

he would get completely ownerd by BJ but I love that he would be willing to put friendship aside, like a true businessman and fight him!

There was a moment last night, when she was sandwiched between the two Finnish dwarves and the Maori tribesmen, where I thought, "Wow, I could really spend the rest of my life with this woman".

Yea, GSP is a nice guy but he pisses me off

I understand that he has to do what’s best for him but I can’t help but dislike his safe approach to fighting. Almost any other champion in the UFC would be willing to put on the fights that fans want to see. I was so happy when Dana decided not to show the GSP vs. Alves fight replay on free TV…GSP is BORING, and I think fans are starting to turn on him.

yeah.

I appreciate more what BJ, Anderson and Machida/Shogun (whoever comes out as the champ) does.

ppl think you have to like guys who r at the top and b/c they’re winning, you don’t have to like anybody you have your own type of fighters/fighting you prefer. Why i write this is b/c someone will say Gsp is this and that and that you are a fool for not enjoying his fights

ja434650

Was JA434649 taken?

No one that liked GSP to begin with turned on him. Unless you’re an under educated mma fan there is no reason to abandon the best MMAist in UFC.

The only ppl that hate GSP all have 1 coincidental thing in common, they all cheer for Penn more! Makes sense.

I dislike Faber, but saying that he’s “mediocre” at 145 pounds is a megafail. He might be mediocre at 155 though. He’s already pretty bulky at FW, and he’ll be too small at LW.

0-4

The interviewer must have asked: “Is there anyway you can think of to go 0 for 4 in your next 4 fights?”.

Urijah: “Oh for sure, just fight Brown, Aldo, Torres, and let Penn end my life”.

by daniel worby on Feb 10, 2010 8:08 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Mediocre at best??? That’s a little harsh. This guy is on a level that most fighters never see. BJ might be a little lofty, but Torres and Aldo is certainly possible. I definately see revenge on Brown as well.

by Big House on Feb 9, 2010 10:28 PM EST reply actions

thats what i meant guys

sorry, he’s better than average at 45, i think torre would beat him at 35 and bj would kill him at 55

by kevjack115 on Feb 9, 2010 11:40 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Think so too

Aldo will beat him bad. Torres would probably heat him and BJ would play with and then kill him! But he’s getting revange on Brown for sure. The first time was a fluke/luckypunch and overconfidence, the second time he broke both his hands after 1,5 round. Not so easy to fight like that… He was throwing elbows and shouldering Brown and still managed to last the full 5 rounds.

by Zlatan, My Hero on Feb 10, 2010 3:55 AM EST up reply actions

Exactly!

Getting ahead of himself speaking of B.J.! And of course he would fight you………..why wouldn’t he? B.J. fights BIGGER and BETTER!

by MBOW on Feb 10, 2010 8:25 AM EST up reply actions

Give respect where respect is due

I’m not really a Urijah Faber fan, but that being said I respect the hell out of the guy. I don’t know if any of you remember his last fight, but he finished it with two broken hands. Obviously he has his hands full with Jose Aldo on April 24th, but I think he deserves respect for the simple fact he is willing to fight the best fighters.

Think of someone like Georges St. Pierre, who has dominated his weight division for years. He has shown absolutely no signs of wanting to fight bigger fighters even though it’s what the fans ask of him. I for one would not be opposed to seeing Faber fight B.J. Penn or anyone else at 155. The guy wants to get paid, who can blame him. If he signs any of these megafights at 155, there is no doubt it will be main event worthy.

wish the fans were listening

But nonetheless no one seems to understand that GSP straight from his mouth said: “I’ll fight whoever Dana says I should”.

He also went on to say: “I would just want 4-6 months to put on the extra weight so I could lose weight for the fight”.*

*when asked about fight Spider.

So where in the above do you guys see that he said ‘no I’m staying at WW forever no matter what’?

I can’t find it. Perhaps someone can provide a link where GSP says he won’t ever be moving up a class? Dana knows that fight isn’t necessary yet. He also knows GSP is probably the smartest fighter he houses.

If GSP moves up he will fight lesser tiered guys first just like Andy did. Its called being ‘not stupid’.

You guys should learn 1st before you make up what you think GSP does.

A lot of fighters break their hands during a fight!!!

I’m sick of everyone praising him for that! Big fn deal!!! And if he would have pulled a Varner than we would never hear the end of what a bitch he is. THEIR FIGHTERS AND THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO FIGHT HURT!!!

by MBOW on Feb 10, 2010 8:28 AM EST up reply actions

It’s cool to see that he wants to fight the best. Regardless of being friends or not. The Greg Jackson and the AKA guys, need to take note.

blah blah blah

The only reason he’d fight BK Penn is cause then he’d finally get the 250k a fight. He knows he wouldn’t make it out of the 1st round.

Aldo is gonna finish him in the early stages of the 2nd at the latest as well. Most likely early in the 1st.

Faber

Looks like ‘that guy’ that i would normally hate. But the dude has done some impressive things, Hes won the title (albeit inferior competition by todays standards), Hes built his own succesful gym and helped out a few young talented fighters get recognition. Hes got the pretty boy look but he is a hard worker and seems to care about the MMA scene and helping it grow.. Cant hate on that.

If he beats Aldo and Brown..

Send him up to 155 to fight BJ, that would be great.

Beating Aldo, I see as a tough enough goal. Not to mention, beating a guy who has conquered him twice already.
I would love to see Faber become the best at 145. He is the most likeable, and would be a superstar. Aldo is just a monster, and I don’t see anyone getting past him anytime soon.

by Miketsi on Feb 10, 2010 2:40 AM EST via mobile reply actions

He needs to win against maybe 2 or 3 UFC LW contenders first before he can enter the octagon with BJ.

He ain’t even gonna win against Aldo. That’s his mistake, he’s looking past Aldo, who’s extremely dangerous!

I'd like to see him fight Penn at 150

Like most here, I’d bet money on Bj but Faber is really hard not to like. He brings it every time he steps in the cage.

by kden808 on Feb 10, 2010 5:28 AM EST reply actions

'like most here i'd bet money on bj'

Like most?

Who the hell would pick Faber?
I don’t even like Penn but I’m not that daft as to think he wouldn’t absolutely clean Faber in any method he see’s fit.

‘Like EVERYONE here, I’d be taking Penn’

There. Problem solved.

Dream FW tourney

That’s what this would be. BJ could make 145, would obviously be the #1 seed & since Aldo/Faber is already booked and Torres would be coming up in weight, Torres becomes the 4 seed and faces BJ.

As far as Faber, I give him more of a chance against Aldo than most. I think he proved even in defeat that he’s a better, more well-rounded fighter than Brown and I think he would win a 3rd match. Faber/Torres is a possibility if Aldo dominates the FW division, but I think the only reason Faber mentions him is name value and to have somebody who he could probably beat.

by Mulefloyd on Feb 10, 2010 9:14 AM EST reply actions

all fighters are cocky, you need to be

Doi think anyone will beat BJ at 155…no because, no one has shown me anything that blows me away. Theres no dream match-up at 155lbs at this moment because, they include dropping weight and going up in weight. Faber is a good fighter who enjoys fighting a small pond. WEC only has so long until, people see through it as a small pond with one huge fish in Faber. Would i be more excited to see Urijah Faber vs, Penn then Penn vs. Edgar…yes no doubt. The idea of one of the most exciting fighters against one of the masters of mma would be more fun then the best vs, the best of whats left. Faber like every other fighter is cocky as shit. Men who know they are not good at anything are cocky. Faber is just a marketing machine and he’s creating talk. Theres 30+ comments on this site alone on this topic, he did his job and promoted the WEC and himself. I do not see faber beating Penn but, would i pay to see it..yes
