Around SBN: Leandro Damiao Is Still Really Good

MONDAY MORNING BLACKBELT

What an interesting night and week leading up to the event.  I was very wrong in my picks and have no problem admitting it!  I wasn't overly impressed with this event at all.  Thiago was very impressive in victory and to get wins over 2 of the 3 AKA guys that won't fight each other is a great accomplishment.  I know I'm in the minority, but I've always been a Serra fan, what a good win for him, now if we could only see him a little more active.  The real "story of the night is Chael Sonnen.

Sonnen talked so much shit leading up to this fight, that he got his name onto every mma website almost everyday last week.  He totally dominated Nate, and even though I've never been a fan of Nate, I for one was very surprised.  Why though, because the UFC told me to be?  Because the odds makers told me to be?   Nate had an interview possted from a documentary about Matt Lindland where he criticizes the structure of the UFC and mma in general.  He said (and I'm summarizing, not quoting) in the olympics and international wrestling "meets" there is a structure so that the best wrestler comes out on top and then he is the "best wrestler in the world."   He goes on to say that the UFC on the other hand puts guys that they can market into these top spots and build them up into superstars.  Now I kinda shrugged it off as Chael being Chael, but I knew there was some truth to it... fast forward to saturday night.  Don't get me wrong, do I feel that all 5 major titles are held by the best in that weight?  Yes all but maybe LHW, but then look at the "contenders."  Frankie Edgar, Hardy, Mir, Cain and Carwin.  One of these guys is a former champion and has payed his "dues" in the UFC.

The main event sat. goes on to further prove what Chael says (bear with me, this is where I babble).  Randy Couture comes into this fight off of a controversial win over Brandon Vera (which I felt Vera one, and 2 losses in a row before that, yet is a "top LHW contender."  Now I and a lot of other guys picked Coleman to beat this "contender."  We didn't realize that Coleman was going to age 40 years in the last 6 months, I mean what the fuck, where was the coleman that fought Bonnar or Shogun?  Or did he dominate a guy that is so weak in Bonnar (but the UFC told us he was pretty good) and we bought it?

Further proof that the UFC is into telling us who the contenders are instead of structuring it correctly, after the fight, Dana White said Randy is "top 5 LHW."  Really?  would you ike me to list the 7-10 guys off the top of my head that would knock Randy's head off?  Do you want me to add to it guys that are fighting at MW that would beat his ass down at LHW (wand, Silva and yes I'd take Bisping)?   Randy is 100% top 5 over 40.   Finally there are the "official" rankings that are in USA today and compiled by... I believe Bloody Elbow.  They are supposedly an mma web site, yet they have guys like Ray Mercer and King Mo in their top 25.  Why??? name recognitiion?  Mark Coleman is #25 on their LHW rankings.  Stop drinking the UFC cool aide guys, they are the same entity that told you Nover would be the next anderson Silva or GSP, faggot is having seizures he's so nervous to get in there.

The UFC needs to have a tournament, invite the best in the world to compete and have it be a non-UFC event.  Get the top 8 guys in each weight class and have it structured to get 1 Champion (sorta the undisputed champion of the world).  Dana shouldn't be too scared, he has most belts locked up.  Oh and guys, Melvin Guillard wouldn't even be in that tournament.  I'm a huge Melvin fan, but you guys saying he and BJ should fight should let the comments come from the big boys, because last time I checked, Melvin has no ground game to speak of!  alright homies, I know I'm forgetting something, but have at it!

Sonnen and Thiago were the most impressive fighters of the night. If only Nate could have held onto that choke a little longer…

I doubt Sonnen gets an immediate title shot. Watch him have to fight another contender bout while Anderson goes back up for another foray at 205.

All in all, a real stinker of an event. The worst display of stand-up in general I’ve seen on a UFC card for a while. Sloppy, sloppy stuff. Listening to Rogan and Goldberg stroke Randy’s shaft after beating a stiff old man in Coleman weas hilarious. I think several of the event’s security guards would have beat Mark up on Saturday. He is soooo done, and so is Trigg. Awful.

Goldberg and Rogan were especially atrocious on Saturday. A little professionalism, please.

Maia once again looked tiny at 185. Although his striking has improved, he will not beat top middleweights standing up, and needs to improve his strength and his double-leg if he wants to compete at the highest level. Those BJJ trips are fancy, but work about 5% of the time against a good wrestler.

Can’t wait for UFC 110 and the cards to come. Dana really should have put this event on Spike once his other main events all fell through.

I thought the fights were exciting

The card played out much more exciting than it looked on paper. A couple of good upsets. I had low expectations for the main event and it proved worse than expected, because the Hammer didn’t show up at all. But overall I thought there were a lot of good fights.

I think Trigg was winning that fight till he got caught. His boxing looked better than it ever has before. He’ll never be a Top5 again, but I’d say he can still hold his own in the middle ranks.

I expected Sonnen to be tougher than others were saying, but he went WAY beyond my expectations. I think the only reason he doesn’t get a title shot is that Anderson is afraid of wrestlers and Dana is handpicking his opponents.

I was really impressed with Phil Davis‘s debut. Extremely strong legs and low base, superb top-control. He’s definitely one to watch. .

I knew Thiago would kill Swick. Swick is a decent fighter, but he gets a lot more hype than he warrants, mostly because of his vastly superior teammates.

Wow, I don’t know what the hell you saw in Trigg’s boxing that impressed you. He looked terrible.

I guess some people enjoyed this event a lot more than my friends and I did. There just wasn’t one fight I was really pumped up for, and I found that unlike most cards I’m not that excited for, I wasn’t pleasantly surprised by any of the fights.

Nice to see you’re still around btw, Sho.

Why did Shonuff say Trigg looked good at all?

The fight was 30 seconds long and Trigg didn’t even land a leg kick. Trigg looked like shit and complained about an early stoppage AGAIN. I am sick of Trigg, not sure how he got another UFC contract, but it needs to be ripped up.

Serra was toying with him going to the body.

then knocked him out at his first attempt of going to the head. Serra and Thiago were the only 2 fighters that brought some fireworks, the rest were onesided and filled with guys who looked to have less technique than streetbrawlers.

Poor poor card, I think cards like this one really “exposes” the quality of the UFC’s weight classes and their plans of (lying) marketing certain fighters to the fans who are not that good, it’s pathetic and makes you feel ill.

Is that his excuse for trying to be the biggest arsehole possible?

The UFC do get carried away with promoting personalities over talent, which is why the likes of Baroni, Coleman, Ortiz and Trigg got brought back when they’re all past it and is why Chuck and Randy continue to main event PPVs or in title contendership fights despite there being much better fighters in their weight class. The fact that Kimbo has been hired purely for ratings is worrying as well, though in general if you don’t have the talent then you get found out pretty quickly.

Right now the only reason that guys like Hardy and Edgar are getting title shots is that GSP and BJ are so good that they’ve beaten everyone else in their divisions, so unless you want to see endless rematches with involving Fitch, Alves, Kos, Florian and Sanchez or BJ and GSP move up a division then these fights are the best possible ones for the time.

Exactly

I have no problems with those 2 fights, sure they’re mismatches but nobody else has done more than Frankie or Dan to earn a title shot at this point and I’d rather see BJ and GSP beat fresh people than fight the same guys over and over again.

by jay. on Feb 8, 2010 3:59 PM EST up reply actions

After these fights I hope that they do

Unless the UFC sign some top talent like Aoki, Shields, Melendez or Diaz then there’s nobody left for BJ or GSP to fight unless they move up. I’d rather see that than endless rematches or mismatches, as BJ will just get lazy if he’s not pushed and GSP will quit the sport altogether and try to compete at London 2012 if he has nobody new and relevant to fight.

Andy should move up as well if he plans to go past these next 3 fights, though with Machida and Lil Nog as top contenders that could be a problem. At least Vitor and Sonnen are good opponents for him right now.

Haha I was as moaning about this card as soon as Lil Nog-Vera was cancelled

I had little interest in this even in the run-up and wasn’t surprised at all that most of the fights were boring. Not only did this card lack a big fight (no amount of UFC hype can justify a Couture-Coleman main event) but stylistically the card was full of mismatches (Serra-Trigg, Coleman-Couture as Trigg and Coleman are both terrible) or boring fights. Maia-Miller cancelled each other out and Chael Sonnen, as impressive as he has looked recently, is not exciting to watch. I was happy with Thiago-Swick but that wasn’t enough to save this dud of a card.

108 may have lacked star power but you can’t go wrong with Semtex or JDS fights and I enjoy watching Rashad fight, so I was interested in that fight even if it shouldn’t have been a main event either. Thankfully the upcoming UFC and SF cards will blow this one right out of the water, can’t wait for 110 that has some big names and will be stacked with entertaining fights.

Colemans biggest weakness is his cardio

his power is really only good for the first round of any fight becauswe once he gets tired his KO power is gone. Let’s be honest Coleman is just above Bonnar calibure. Randy’s biggest strength is his endurance and grappling wich was a horrible match up for Coleman as Randy’s grappling and dirty boxing fatigued and dazed Coleman, when Coleman got up he was panting and had a hard time finding his corner and Randy was just getting warmed up. Is Randy a top five….no but he’s close. Coleman was a step back from Vera and didn’t really prove anything. I would like to see Randy fight any of the top five contenders he may not win but he can challenge any of them and is the greatest fighter over 40 ever.

Kevin, what are you smoking this week?

Bisping beating Couture??? Don’t be a retard! I’d say Anderson has an 85% chance of beating Couture, but 60/40 Randy beats Wandy (now Wandy, not Pride Wandy). And I give him 50/50 against Rashad, Thiago, Lil Nog, and better than that against Forrest or Jardine. I’d even give him a 1 in 3 chance against Machida. I don’t think he could survive Rampage or Shogun. But I’d put my money on Randy against Cain, Carwin, or Kongo.

by (shonuff) on Feb 8, 2010 2:17 PM EST reply actions

Dude what the hell are you talking about? Randy beats now Wandy 60/40 not Pride Wandy? Randy is 46 years old why would you bring up a younger wandy. Of course a 46 year old Randy would prolly lose to Pride Wandy. And Randy 50/50 vs any of those guys is rediculous. And 1/3 vs Machida?? Where are you getting these numbers?

I made 10 grand on mmaplayground in 2 UFC shows so don't question me

by bigbadbunbun on Feb 8, 2010 2:50 PM EST up reply actions

just my opinion

I think a 46 year old Randy now has a better chance against the Wandy of today than a 40 year old Randy would have had against the Wandy of 6 years ago. I don’t think that’s any stretch. A few years ago Wandy was KOing guys like Rampage, Fujita, and Sakuraba. Now he’s 1:5 in his last six fights. Randy hasn’t deteriorated nearly as much as Wandy.

by (shonuff) on Feb 8, 2010 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

I made 10 grand on mmaplayground in 2 UFC shows so don't question me

by bigbadbunbun on Feb 8, 2010 3:06 PM EST up reply actions

No, I think he has a 50% chance of beating him one time

sounds like semantics, but there’s a difference, and it’s Randy’s gameplanning. Lil’ Nog is a better boxer than Big Nog, but not as good a grappler. Randy always plays to what he believes to be his opponent’s weakest point, and he often overestimates his boxing, like he did against Big Nog. He wouldn’t make the same mistake against Lil’Nog and would focus on grappling him. Randy would have a slight size and strength advantage over Lil’Nog that he didn’t have against Big Nog. With proper game planning, that could be enough to tip the scales in his direction. Of course, if he does make th same mistake he made before and tries to stand and swat with Lil, he’d get destroyed, but I don’t think he’d do that.

by (shonuff) on Feb 8, 2010 3:18 PM EST up reply actions

If I were Joe Silva, I’d think about matching Li’l Nog with Randy after Nog kills Forrest. Nog would put an end to Methuselah™ once and for all.

I’d also like to see Bader matched up with Jones, if both fighters win their next fights (which I expect they will). That would establish the winner as the best young up-and-comer in the division.

He’s still TOP 10-12. He’s the second or 3rd best wrestler in the division and still has a brutal top game. I hate the guy, but if you look objectively, his last three fights were a very close decision with #5 Forrest, a draw with #4 Evans, and a loss to #1 Machida. Much as I hate the guy, I don’t think there’s any reason to put him out to pasture just yet. He’ll never be TOP 3 again, but he’s still in the TOP 10 discussion. .

Tito beats Jardine with ease, have you ever seen Tito let his legs get kicked? didn’t happen against Forrest and when it did he took him down.

I have no idea how you can rank Forrest above and say that he beats him when Tito made his comeback after 18 months off from a surgery, i don’t care who it is things like that are gonna have an impact like in the 3rd round when he let Forrest win cause he was gassed.

Tito has a good chance against Thiago Silva and Rashad too, he is still a strong wrestler.

he lost to Forrest just like Shogun did, had he been in better shape the rusult could have and probably would have been different as he took him down with relative ease until the pointe he gassed.

He is past his physical prime but would still beat atleast Jardine with ease! he’s a much better wrestler and Jardine’s standup game is crap!

Who seriously thinks that Tito won that Forrest remach other than Tito and Jenna?

He’s the same old overrated one dimensional Tito who can’t beat top wrestlers and is Freddie Roach’s worst student, I doubt that he ever even trained at the Wild Card gym in the first place. Honestly I don’t have Tito beating anyone relevant again, he’ll probabaly lose to Chuck then retire.

he's not a student of Freddie Roach

He’s an mma fighter who’s wrestled his whole life, he came over to get some advice and learn some techniques.

McArthur is completely right here, just take Tito’s wrestling and match him up against those guys and you’ll have Tito with a great chance of winning. People forget how he took Rashad down like 10 times in their fight, completely dominant in the wrestling it could happen again, ppl don’t change that much.

I don't know if Chuck can pull it off again

He’s lost his chin and his timing isn’t what it used to be. Strikers don’t age as well as grapplers because they depend more on speed and reflexes, which deteriorate much earlier than strength.

I don't think the UFC will give Randy a title shot with this win

Yes the UFC is trying to bumb up Randy’s status but for good reason. Machida doesn’t want to fight Lil NOG so if Machida wins that takes one of the top five out. Rampage for whatever reason doesn’t want ot fight for the belt(Maybe he has bad dreams about shogun). So if Rampage beatsd Evans and machida wins who will face Machida for the belt?

"He broke tim sylvia’s arm…...So what?" – Brock Lesnar

by Puck Head on Feb 8, 2010 2:22 PM EST reply actions

By the MMA consensus rankings let's look at the possiblities for a title shot if Machida wins

1 Lyoto Machida
2 Mauricio Rua – Means he lost again
3 Rashad Evans – Most logical if he beats Page if he doesn’t he’s not a possibilty
4 Quinton Jackson – If he wins makes sense to go for the belt but does he want too?
5 Gegard Mousasi – Not in the UFC
6 Forrest Griffin – Another possibility but like Randy needs to face some top contenders Lil NOG?
7 Antonio Rogerio Nogueira – Won’t fight Machida but I think should be rated higher
8 Thiago Silva – Coming off a loss won’t happen anytime soon
9 Anderson Silva – Won’t happen friends
10 Rich Franklin – Needs to win
11 Randy Couture – 3rd on the list behind Rashad and page really?

Soares though believes if push come to shove it may happen
Despite Nogueira and Machida being Black House teammates, Soares believes a battle over the belt would be enough for the two to face each other, not out of any disparagement, but out of respect.

“They both want the same thing. Lyoto wants to keep his belt and Rogerio wants it. We’ll cross that bridge when it comes, but I think when push comes to shove if that fight was to come up, I think they’d fight each other. They’re friends they respect each other very much,” Soares told MMAWeekly Radio recently.

But remember the fighters themselves have yet to state this?

I've read that Lil Nog has said it

But Machida hasn’t .

IMO the TOP 5 guys in the division are (in no particular order)

Machida,
Anderson,
Rampage,
Shogun,
Lil’ Nog.

(This is based on my assessment of their current abilities, not on the rank of recent opponents)
I have Randy and Rashad close behind, and Forrest, Tito, Rich, and Thiago just below them.

Vera fought a stupid fight. If he stays outside he could have leg-kicked and body-kicked Randy all day long. Instead he tried to grapple with him and gave the judges an excuse to hand it to Randy.

he had no choice

Vera didn’t CHOOSE to try to grapple with Randy. I’ve never seen Vera choose to grapple with anybody. Randy gave him no choice about that. But the fact that Vera was able to neutralize Couture’s takedown shows that he wasn’t just boasting when he said his greco skills were “rediculous”.

I'm saying

very few people have a choice about whether or not their going to grapple with Randy. One of Randy’s biggest strengths is the ability to rob his opponents of that choice. Win or Lose, Randy almost always dictates where the fight takes place.

not really

more like masterful execution. Unfortunately, his game planning isn’t always that great due to his overestimation of his boxing and sometimes underestimation of his wrestling against other grapplers. Sometimes he makes the wrong strategy and pays for it, but if he wants it to be a standup fight, it’s going to be, If he wants it against the cage, it’s gonna be, and if he wants it on the ground, that’s where it’s going.

by (shonuff) on Feb 10, 2010 8:15 PM EST up reply actions

Machida, Shogun, Rampage, Rashad, Thiago and Rogerio would all KO him in my opinion. I think Jones would beat him, and IMO Vera already did beat him. Randy is somewhere around the 7th or 8th best LHW in the UFC right now. Coleman and Tito are not even on the radar.

Yeah Kev, most people do forget about him

I think its mainly because he has no permanent home as far as a division goes. So many fights at 195, a non-existent division. I think now he will settle at 205 though. For me, Randy v Franklin makes the most sense from a fan and a UFC standpoint. both guys should be fighting big names, but I think most people agree that neither will ever be a legit belt threat again. The UFC could use this as a headliner, and really it would be a huge draw. Plus, the timeline makes sense because Rich said he wanted off until May or June, and has no opponent. Just my opinion, but it makes sense to me.

by domino effect on Feb 8, 2010 5:06 PM EST up reply actions

Rich has beaten lots of good wrestlers. Hendo LnP’d his way to razor-thin decision, but that’s the only time a wrestler got the best of him (and Henderson’s wrestling is unparallelled at that weight).

Rich’s problems seem to come against fast, counter-punching Brazilian strikers!

Now I hope Soares stops speaking Sonnen has to face Maia to get the title shot. Joe Silva still is the UFC matchmaker.

I’m a real fan of Paulo Thiago. The policeman of BOPE is humble and open to new knowledges and camps to improve his game. Of course he’s on the way to become a big deal in the welterweight division but I’m sure he can put lots of guys in trouble in any aspect of the fight. I’ll talk to him and we, maniacs, will make up some questions for an exclusive interview.

1st question…“how many people have you killed?”

Fedor invented a language that incorporates Sambo and Kimuras.

So next time FEDOR is kicking your ass, don't be offended or hurt, he may be just trying to tell you he likes your hat.

Mac that's a Dwight Schrute question if I ever heard one.

2nd 2 part Question.

Out of the # of people that you have killed.

How many were killed by Police Issued weapons? And
How Mnay were killed by your MMA Techniques?

Follow up question:

Do you have nun chucks?

I bet against both Paulo Thiago and Mark Coleman:
- THiago impressed the sh1t out of me.
- Coleman you owe me $20 bucks.

Of course MMAMania.com has to agree with the job.

What do you mean Mr.Cruz? A thread to find the best Questions for PT ?

Just make a fan post and everyone will post their two cents. You can select the most appropriate seeing as how it’s your interview.

I’ve actually wondered if Mania/Jesse would ever let me go around Toronto and interview fighters from this area for the site… I think it would be fun. I just would never do it on my own because who would take me seriously if I didn’t have any brand power behind it.

I never have. I suppose everything starts with an email. Perhaps I should start there. Im not really looking for anything other than the enjoyment of doing it for everyone and meeting fighters myself.

Have you?
