after watching that I think Chael might have a shot against Silva and a very good shot against Vitor...I hate to say it but

Yeah

Sonnen is a good fighter. He just comes off bad because of his whiny-sounding bluntness.

Good call. He even delivered the obvious lie (“Anderson > Belfort”) quite convincingly. He just looks to the side for a moment.

Did you mean Anderson < Belfort? And GSP is the all-time politician, just ahead of everyone who gives the stock “my opponent is really well-rounded, this will be the biggest test of my career” answer when asked about any opponent.

there is a difference between being a politician, and being respectful of one's opponents

GSP is the latter.

If I was fighting GSP next week he would say I was the greatest challenge of his career. And that’s just sad, because I’ve never trained in any sort of fighting and haven’t even really been in a fight since middle school. Or junior high, depending on where you’re from.

I think...

…Chael has an excellent chance against Silva. He’s strongest where Andy is weakest, but you can turn that on its head and say Andy is strongest where Sonnen is weakest.

One thing I don’t get though, is how everybody is saying Andy is better off of his back than Nate??!! what?
Nate has a black belt in BJJ under Ricardo Murgel!
Nate has 14 submission wins on his record, Andy only really has two, in fact, when Nate first started out he was some what of a subs specialist. Won all of his first 6 fights that way.

If you think Anderson Silva is better off of his back than Nate then you are sorely mistaken.

yer, that was impressive

but I think Dan and Chael are different in the way they play the ground game. Dan works positioning and transitions, which inevitably leave you vulnerable even if for a moment. Chael likes the other guy on the ground but doesn’t spend nearly as much time down there with him, I don’t recall him making any significant attempts at transitioning. Just rearing up and pounding down.

If Nate has a black belt from anyone he should get some of his training costs refunded because he looked like absolute garbage on the ground.

here he is being awesome off his back against silva.

by Glamis on Feb 8, 2010 11:25 AM EST up reply actions

Hey SFK...

but was Nate getting those subs off of his back or from dominant position? I think Anderson’s only 2 subs are far more significant then anyone Nate subbed (Except Horn). Hendo has only been subbed by Nog before Anderson and Lutter had only been keylocked by Linland before Andy subbed him. No way am I saying that 2 subs compares to 14, but I just think Anderson is a different monster then Nate. I am still reeling in awe about how NAte got manhandled and looked so horrible off his back. ALthough Chael looked much worse then NAte did at the end of the fight. Kind of makes you wonder if he has powder puffs for hands, because after 158 punches he should look like crap. EVen those annyoing little jabs that Nick Diaz throws close up eyes, make noses bleed, and have a physical effect.

I am think training bjj with Big Nog for mma has advantages over training with Murgel. Murjel is a straight bjj man, granted he as some 50 yrs of training under his belt, but Big Nog’s training and experience has to have the edge when training for mma. Nog has written the MMA BJJ book.

by Da Monkey on Feb 8, 2010 12:02 PM EST up reply actions

Hey Monkey

I’m also dubious about the strength of Chael’s punches, but he didn’t need power to win, and I don’t think he’ll need power if he ever fights Andy. Sonnen was VERY cautios with his positioning, he spent alot of the time loosely hanging at the edge of Nate’s gaurd attacking from there, not really giving him anything to work with and when he did get close, Nate cut him up and almost subbed him. When he starts transitioning and getting more involved on the ground, that’s when Chael is vulnerable.

I’m not saying that Chael will beat Andy, I don’t think BJJ skill level will be the difference in a fight with Andy, I think the difference between the two fights for Chael will be takedown defence. Andy will be more difficult to get hold of. and will have more of an opportunity to attack standing. However, if Chael does take him down, I can’t see him getting subbed if he fights as smart as he did against Nate.

I thought Nates comments after the fight were comical.

I love nate, thought he would win but listening to him say “I couldve won that fight”, “I jsut didnt execute my gameplan” I thought was ridiculous. My opinion is that the reason for not working is gameplan was because he got dominated in every aspect of the fight, they could do this thing over and over and the results would be the same. This was not a lucky punch, Chael did not get lucky. Its like BJ thinking he couldve beat GSP.

by HEELHOOK on Feb 8, 2010 10:07 AM EST reply actions

Don't even know why they wasted time in interviewing him after the fight.

He wasn’t dominated in every aspect of the game either, far from it actually. Chael dominated the wrestling match and was active with his GnP and that’s all he needed to do to win.

Anderson Silva should win this one relatively easy, Dan Henderson posed the exact same threat but who knows every fighter can have an off night.

Matteo Serra is the mayn! Forza Italia.

by RoBerto. on Feb 8, 2010 10:17 AM EST up reply actions

I’m not so sure about the Hendo-Sonnen comparison’s in regards to their threat-levels to Anderson. They do have similar strengths, but Sonnen is much more inclined than Hendo to stick to a wrestling-centric gameplan. I also think Sonnen is faster than Hendo and has faster, better takedowns at this point. Hendo probably has better sub defense and is more of a threat to finish any fight, but I think Chael has a better chance of putting Silva on his back, he just has to worry about getting subbed once he gets there.

by Stillberry on Feb 8, 2010 10:23 AM EST up reply actions

He might have a better chance but Anderson Silva is far superior to any level of competiton Chael’s ever faced. Marquardt td defense was pathetic, he came in too close everytime trying to swing when he must’ve known that Chael wanted to take him down.

I agree

Anderson will more than likely take Chael to school. Andy has got the mental game to stay calm under fire, I think Nate kinda had trouble adjusting once some unexpected shit happened to him, although he did eventually find a way to re-compose himself and do some things late in the fight.

i was thoroughly surprised by his domination of marq

i thought nate was gonna win, chael is def the number one contender and has good enough wrestling to threaten whoever will be the champion anderson/vitor

by asahni on Feb 8, 2010 10:13 AM EST reply actions

Silva better be training on his cardio/strength and conditioning

The fight will be tough for both, but I haven’t seen anyone deal with this ridiculous pace that Chael has started using. It is almost like watching That boxer from wales who retired undefeated. What was his name, Joe Calzaghe. He didn’t beat guys with better technique or power, he used his pace. Sonnen is mixing his wrestling and staying like glue and fast pace to wear opponents out.

by FilthyFloyd on Feb 8, 2010 10:49 AM EST reply actions

did i miss something?

I hope this compustrike thread is just to show the pure domination of Chael? Cause they usually only post these when there is doubt surrounding who won?

I wanted Nate but its pretty cut and dry that we was outworked throughout the fight. There isn’t any doubters is there?

Well, some people (not me) think T. Silva should have gotten the win over Rashad for almost knocking him out in the 3rd round, and Nate almost choked out Sonnen in the 3rd, so maybe there are a few doubters out there.

Doubt it...

Chael won convincingly. The only thing I didn’t like was the style – Chael is pretty much Randy mkII and I was hoping the dull wrestling decisions would go away to a degree when he retires. I know it’s effective but every time I see a fight like that it makes me want to go and watch K1 all over again. I’m missing those Griffin vs Bonnar style stand-up wars.

The main issue I have with greco roman/BJJ styles is their effectiveness in real-life, it’s all well and good hugging someone so they can’t do anything for 15 mins in a ring/octagon but do that in a pub fight and the other dude’s mates will be kicking your face in. I did kickboxing for years and a mate I did it with took out six guys when one of them slapped his secretary on a work night out.

The original point of the UFC was to show which styles were the most effective when there were no rules, whether or not you consider hugging and rubbing your forearm on a guy’s face effective or more like the playful tussle you have with a sibling is up to you – I just find it dull from an entertainment point of view.

by Jimrod on Feb 8, 2010 11:25 AM EST up reply actions

I agree, but I don’t think what Sonnen did to Marquardt falls into that category. That was a 15-minute mugging, not a hug-fest.

A: There’s no way you beat the shit out of 6 guys singlehandedly.
B: This is not an analog for “real” fighting. Real fighting involves weapons. And if you’re talking about real hand to hand combat fighting then real fighting involves low blows and eye pokes and strangling someone’s neck.

Hey -

I didn’t beat up 6 guys, my mate did – I wasn’t there but my other friends were and they described it like something out of a Bruce Lee film… They wouldn’t make it up and they’re not easily impressed.

I was describing what the UFC was originally based on, when there were less rules, about it being about finding the ultimate form of combat – laying on someone just doesn’t do it for me.

P-Dub, I do agree to a degree, it was a reasonably active hug!

Dude -

I saw his hands the next day, no skin on his knuckles but not a mark on his face. You have to remember he was a kickboxer fighting regular guys, he’s a big strong dude. I don’t mind if people don’t believe me but this wasn’t an average guy taking on 6 MMA legends or something – and it was outside a pub, people were drunk. I would still fancy my chances if I was sober against a bunch of drunk guys. Even 10 years on he still hits a bag harder than anyone else I know even though he’s not been in training.

Anyway I’ve got no reason to make shit up, it’s not like I’m saying it was me.

For me

Sonnen has become one of those like him because you fucking hate him type of guys. His brutal honesty and total republican-ness is hilarious, and Im saying this about a guy who beat one of my favorites in Nate Marquardt. I also think he has the best chance of dethroning Anderson, but I also believe Anderson would have a much easier time submitting him form his back. Oh and Sonnens post fight comments were hilarious. " This is terrible" lol.

I think nate had the wrong strategy, should have used butterflys or done anything to get back to his feet, u could tell chael was much more comfortable and inflicted more damage in nates guard than when he had his back. he didnt even fully comite to taking his back because he knew nate was explosive enough to roll over
