UFC Quick Quote: Randy Couture to keep plugging away at light heavyweight

Randy-couture-ufc-109_medium

"I don't know what's next. We'll see. Dana will probably call me tomorrow and say ‘Hey, do you want to fight next week?'.... I was very happy. We couldn't have mapped it out better. The last few camps have been fantastic and this camp went great too. Everybody talked about Mark and expected the fight not to go well for him. But I don't overlook anybody. I took him very seriously. I see him as a dangerous guy. We prepared for the worst-case scenario, and I'm gonna do that every time. It was great to get the submission win.... I don't know what you're supposed to feel like at age 46. I have no idea. I'm having fun. I'm still smiling. I still enjoy going to the gym and competing.... I'm enjoying competing against guys my own size to be frank. The trend in the heavyweight division is, these guys aren't just big individuals anymore, these guys are damn good fighters. So all other things being equal, when you give away 30, 40, or 50 pounds, that's a pretty disparaging difference. So I'm happy to be playing around with the 205'ers.... I wasn't pushing the UFC to fight again, the situation the circumstance were what they were and the opportunity to fight again presented itself. I was more than happy to compete again. I've been healthy and I've found that I like the shorter camps and I like being this active.... I haven't placed any limits on myself. But I'm a realistic guy. I know that sooner or later I'm gonna have to find something else to do, but so far I'm physically holding up. I'm hitting all the benchmarks I've set for myself. So I'm just gonna keep plugging away and having fun."

-- UFC Hall of Famer and ageless wonder Randy "The Natural" Couture talks about his dominating victory over Mark Coleman at UFC 109. Couture admits that at this point of his career, the more active he his, the better. And since dropping back down to the 205-pound division, and compiling an undefeated (2-0) record, Randy knows, and feels, like this is the weight class where he belongs. So, what's next for the legend? He has clearly thrust himself back into the top tier of the division, and with a relatively short amount of time left in his illustrious career, you better believe Couture wants to make every bit of it count. Which guys in the division do you want to see Randy matched up with? How many fights away from a title shot is he? Sound off, Maniacs.

Dana should bring back an old timer to fight him instead of getting in the way of prospects and other better fighters. Much like with Renzo-Hughes.

I say bring in Ice Cold to face him – a GOAT who most people will never know about. That’s another classic matchup for a countdown to hype – inventor of dirty boxing vs pioneer of sprawl and brawl. Igor himself was looking to come back to fighting in Korea but the promotion just jerked him around before collapsing.

This makes no sense to me..

Let him fight a young guy that could be champ; that way if he wins everyone gets to eat their words again. Why match him up against older/lesser comp when all anyone does is trash and disrespect the man for it; let him get his shot at a top 5 fighter.

Because anyone with any talent will blow his doors off?

Right now i would take Jon Jones over him for example. Or Lil Nog, Or Rampage, Or thiago silva, Chida, Shogun – Maybe rashad or Luiz Cane. All these guys are ranked above him. You know what i would be OK with a rashad matchup. Especially how bad he looked at 108. Three punches on the ground after 15 mins is inexcusable if you didn’t work subs. I just don’t understand what you see in the man or his skills, O damn but i guess we’ll never see eye to eye on this thing. I’ll give him gameplanning though.

No one's blown through Couture since Chuck Liddell

Brock had a hard time with him, Tim, Gonzaga, Nog went to war with him, Vera obviously didn’t have an easy go of it either; I don’t see who’s blowing his doors off to make him irrelevant here..

I agree

Randy can compete with any fighter in ther world at 205 period he may not be able to beat them but he will PUt on a Great fight

by The real ZACK on Feb 7, 2010 5:00 PM EST up reply actions

I agree and

what if Vera wins who Randy beat? I think Randy beats Thiago, Forrest and Jardine, not that they’re the top but at least all are in top 12, so Randy is not that bad, giving him a shot makes more sense if Vera wins but he should face one more contender…

by Robert(1) on Feb 7, 2010 8:09 PM EST up reply actions

i said the same thing in the recap post NNR and i agree completely

But I agree with o damn in that he should get a shot at top 5 comp. However, iif he fights any of the fighter you listed or a few of the others I listed in my post, he’s going to sleep.

How can you guys sit there and bash on Couture? It took Rua 3 rounds to finish him and the only reason why he finished him was because Coleman was tired… PLus he’s 45 yrs old!!!! You guys think Rua’s back because he knocked out Chuck, Chuck is done!!!! He was losing to Coleman that entire fight untill the 3rd round…. You guy are like a bunch of democrats…. (FLIP FLOP)

by taporsna on Feb 7, 2010 3:27 PM EST up reply actions

I think Rua's back because...

He matched Machida blow for blow for 5 rds and IMO got the better of it. That’s why Rua’s back.

Shogun 3 rounds? LMAO!

That was the same Shogun who lost to Forrest! The Shogun that fought Machida would kill Coleman. It’s not that people hate Randy, they just don’t want to see him get an undeserving title shot cause the fact is there’s at least 8 or 9 guys in the UFCs LHW division who are ahead of him.

by Oswald on Feb 7, 2010 9:23 PM EST up reply actions

OK OK OK

Its funny how after a win Coutoure gets back in the title picture lol. Also y does Joe Rogan ride Randy so hard.. I mean its obvious and very pathetic. Randy got FED Mark Coleman lets be serious.. with a new six fight contract the UFC isnt trying to burn Captain America out and lose his PPV appeal. Which theres nothing wrong with. BUT when people say that WITH A WIN OVER Coleman he is back in the title hunt, then there is some serious problems. Randy should have fought Lil Nog, Jon Jones, Jardine or even Evans.. Those are real guys at 205…. as well as better and more challenge fights than Mark Coleman.

BTW Coleman still the man and one tough and crazy SOB

by The real ZACK on Feb 7, 2010 2:38 PM EST reply actions

Because

he has more strength and toughness in his left nut than u in your whole body troll

by The real ZACK on Feb 7, 2010 4:54 PM EST up reply actions

?

I read everything (I thought), where did he or anyone else say that with the win he would be back in title contention? Of course he has aspirations for that, who wouldn’t? I understand that he is not the greatest but the man can at least hang with pretty much anyone who is anyone in the division. And for that I respect him. I am not a Couture fan by anyones standards but I also don’t believe in blind hate. I do agree with you about the caliber of opponents but to even suggest that he should be fighting any of those guys proves that he is still somewhat relevant.

Dana white actually said it. Randy is good but a fight over Coleman isnt impressive point blank

by The real ZACK on Feb 7, 2010 4:55 PM EST up reply actions

Okay

I just didn’t hear it. Let him get past some contenders and if he is successful then he deserves it. I actually think if he is able to get the clinch and press against the cage he could wear almost anybody down. Lil’ Nog would be the biggest seller IMO…….

-This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

by PSYQO78 on Feb 7, 2010 5:54 PM EST up reply actions

so a win over coleman isnt impressive, yet shogun supposedly beats machida and should be the champ, now shogun was down 2 rounds to none when coleman gassed with like no time left in there fight, so now how impressive is this win?

randy is right back in the title picture because not only was vera very much in it after his last couple fights, but so was coleman with the shogun fight, and the bonnar fight tho bonnar is kind of a bum it was impressive,

now i see for randy a title shot he must beat a top 205 that doesnt have a fight scheduled at this time, now idk who that is but its also not my job though a fight with ryan bader would be a good one i think for captain america (bader is an undefeated wrestling powerhouse) maybe even a fight with thiago silva?

by randy murders on Feb 7, 2010 2:50 PM EST reply actions

I got faith in Randy

Throw him in there with anyone and I’ll take Randy to win; the second he gets back up to something ridiculous like +200 odds he’s gonna win lol. Recently his only mistake IMO is trying to strike with these guys first; I think he should go straight to the clinch; make the 1st rd boring and just wear the guy down, slow his hands down a little bit then try and box some. But coming out to trade when Vera was fresh and ready to throw leather was just a bad decision. Like I said, I got faith in Couture I’m sure he realizes that and he’ll come back against the next youngin with a better plan of attack.

Shogun wasn’t completely healed when he fought Coleman and looked like crap too.

by hydras.teeth on Feb 7, 2010 3:15 PM EST up reply actions

Not even the healing part,

he just gassed mad early. But he was still pasting coleman with all kinds of strikes. If he had any pep to his strikes, Coleman would have been dead in the second rd.

by NNR (formerly NameNotRequired) on Feb 7, 2010 4:21 PM EST up reply actions

He's one more fight away from a title shot

I don’t think anyone in here was saying Coleman’s an easy fight after he went 3 rds with Shogun and then beat Bonnar. Now all the sudden just cause Randy dominates him it’s trash and it doesn’t count for shit… right… Shogun beats Coleman and Chuck Liddell (and Machida lost BTW) and gets a title shot and you wanna cry about Randy getting something he doesn’t deserve??

He’ll get a top 5 guy in his next fight; and if he wins that’s a title shot no doubt about it.

imo Randy loses to Shogun, machida, Page, Shad, Silva, Bones

I knew that would happen; he always gas's fast

Usually the other guy gets tired too though from fighting off Coleman’s TD attempts. Watch his post fight interview; his plan was to strike, he thought his training with Thompkins paid more dividends than it did; he’s the same guy that fought Bonnar and Shogun his skills just don’t line up good against Couture.

On a side note, I honestly believe that if it was anyone else besides Randy that put that beat down on Coleman, people wouldn’t be belittling him half as much as they are. But because it was Randy they wanna down play/degrade the win as much as possible.

Either the loser of Machida/Shogun or the loser of Page/Rashad

Or Forrest; people don’t wanna give Couture a chance in those fights and I want him to get the opportunity to shut some guys up. He’s not dumb, he’s gonna refine that gameplan; I think his mistakes against the younger guys have been him going out and trying to strike right off; needs to wear them down in the clinch first for a rd then throw some hands.

I give him a good shot against Rashad/Forrest

Page/Machida would probably be the worst ones for him and Shogun I don’t really know; it didn’t look like Coleman had all that much trouble taking him down; I give Randy a 50/50 chance to duplicate the feat but execute better once the fight hits the ground.

I think he can beat forrest in a decision. Though i want them to match him with Rashad, i think it’s more likely that winner of Jardine-Bader (aka Bader) will be next. Both guys are sellable (one beat vera, the other was TUF winner coached by Big Nog trying to make a jump into the big boy pool).

Its didnt seem to be at first

But Coleman just looked like age finally caught up to him.. he didnt execute anything and Randy just imposed everything on him. I dont know if that means Randy is that good or Coleman is finished.. Def A little of Both. Ofcourse he should get a top 5 guy and its common sense if he wins he’ll get the shot so whats your point?

Randy is still amazing and always gives a great fight… I dont see him beat a guy like rashad but you never know…. I think he fights Tiago Silva next

by The real ZACK on Feb 7, 2010 4:59 PM EST up reply actions

My point is that

Even if he beats a top 5 guy he’s still going to get disrespected left and right and if it had been a younger, up and coming fighter doing that to Coleman he wouldn’t be getting belittled half this much. but because it’s Randy it seems like everyone’s gotta find a way to belittle/degrade the win as much as possible. Can’t stand it; the guys proven himself time and again to be a true champion and a tough bastard overall; there’s a lot of blind hatred directed at Couture.

NAh

I dont think so Randy is a great fighter and never gets dominated.. He doesnt always win but he always fight great. Its not so much hate as it is being realistic. If he beats a guy like Rashad, Rampage , Machida or Shogun or Jones, Joe Rogan is literally going to choke on Randys nuts for atleast another year. Randy is the easiest fighter to root for and support by far. BTW the MAchida fight is looking more and more like a great matchup for Coutoure.

by The real ZACK on Feb 7, 2010 5:03 PM EST up reply actions

Who should Couture fight next?

I think Randy should wait to fight either the loser of Rampage/Rashad or Machida/Shogun, a win over any of those guys would prove he is a worthy contender for the title. If he is not willing to sit on the sidelines for that long maybe a match up with Thiago silva or the winner of Bader/Jardine as they are the only other top fighters that I can think of that will allow Couture to fight sooner or later.

If you don’t think one more, or two wins max, against a top 5 to 10 fighter in the division gets Couture a title shot, I’m not quite sure we’re ready to take the questioning to another level.

Now to put this nonsense to rest. I asked our loyal readers how many wins away from a title shot Couture is now. You seem to have had a problem with that. So I am only to assume that – A – You’ve been watching the sport for a couple of years and don’t quite understand Randy Couture’s place in history and the relevance it has this discussion. B – You just don’t know how the business works if you actually believe that if Couture wins one more fight in the division, Dana won’t throw him in the title picture. Or C – You just wanted to get one of the writer’s attention by "calling them out," and since I’m new, I made the mistake and gave it to you.

Hopefully I get to a point where I am too busy to respond to inane comments like Mania is. But as of now, time is what I got. So readers that feel like pointing fingers based on, well, nothing, might just get lucky and hear from me.

This however, was not one. I didn’t even have an opinion to disagree with. I asked a question that every other reader answered without a problem.

In the future, if someone has a problem with something I write, and actually has valid points to back it up, I will without hesitation indulge in a little friendly verbal sparring if I see fit.

And I wouldn’t quite call it "sensitive" as much "stupidity" on my part for partaking in this little game. What can I say, I’m a sucker for competition.

Tito saved Coleman's career last night...

the trash talking he did and how mark responded in post fight with rogan set up a grudge match with Ortiz/Coleman.

That fight WILL happen. Ortiz is supposed to be back, 100% healthy, strong back, no excuses… right? Well, Ortiz is about to be 0-2 since his “rebirth” after Liddell gets a hold of him in June.

So, in a way makes sense… For Tito it’s gonna be another shamrock like feud… but at least Ortiz gets a win out of it…

Couture against Evans, Forrest or Rampage all ex champs

Randy against anyone will be a good fight thats why he’s a legend, will he win? Maybe not but he can challenge anyone still. Was Coleman an impressive victory? The way he handled Coleman was a total owning in every phase. I don’t think Randy will ever be the champion or a top three contender but what he is doing at his age is amazing. The loss to NOG was one of the greatest tactical fights last year and a close win over Vera and domination over Coleman show the old man is still a threat and able of fighting with the best.

Never

Happen against Forest and i dont know about Rampage.. I would like to see him fight Rashad.. two strong wrestlers.. Randy would also match up with Shogun or Machida nicely.. Captain America has a shot to get the belt again believe it or not.. he can still control a fight with his wreslting.

And After

Seeing Nate get manhandled it really makes you think that if guys like Shogun and Machida are forced to fight a wreslting match how well would they Actually do?

Lil Nog, Jon Jones or Rampage

Either one of those three would be a fun fight to watch.

Any body

Else WANT Tito to get KTFO by Chuck after bashing Coleman last night

by The real ZACK on Feb 7, 2010 5:01 PM EST reply actions

Big time.

Tito has no class, totally out of line to do that to Coleman after what may be his last fight in the UFC

I want to see Couture vs Anderson Silva.

Shitle Tot

The UFC would obviously like to position Randy for one last title shot. Technically, they could give it to him now based on his past achievements and being 2-0 since returning to the division. Granted, I thought he lost to Vera (Randy took round 1 barely, Vera definitely rd 2 and then rd 3 even until last minute and then Vera got the takedown. Was pretty clear) and Coleman is not that big a win. If the UFC wants to play it safe they would just give him the shot, since he could easily lose to anyone in the top 10.

That said, he can also still challenge a lot of guys. Of guys in the top 5, Rashad is his best bet and that’s a tough fight for him. Randy is a little chinny nowadays and can be easily dropped by a decent shot (see Nog and Vera fights).

I’d like to see him fight Rich Franklin, personally, but that’s another tough fight. It’s hard to say who he could fight that could position him for a deserved title shot. Little Nog if he gets past Forrest? Randy and Forrest wouldn’t fight each other.

Anybody with top notch striking and good TD defense (Machida, Shogun, Rampage, Jones) is going to destroy him, unfortunately. But you never know with Randy when he might pull a miracle out of the bag.

Thoughts on the most legit match-up for Randy that he could conceivably win?

dont get too excited randy

this was a completely meaningless fight. he looked great against coleman but let’s not forget he lost to big nog and was unimpressive in the vera fight which he should have lost as well. i’ll give couture credit when he legitimately beats a top level fighter, but i dont think he’s capable of doing that anymore

Randy vs Forrest next!

I think that would be a pretty good fight.

Entertaining fights for Couture:

Forrest Griffin, the winner fo Liddell vs Ortiz match-up, Super-fight versus Anderson Silva. He can fight some guys but won’t get any other title.

Coutures next fight

I predict his next fight to be against Thiago Silva

Couture vs Evans !!!! PLEEEEEASE

I give Randy 70/30 odds on that one and Evans was No 1 contender while Rampage was gone and before No 6 Shogun put a hurtin’ on Machida. If Randy beats Rashad, I don’t think anyone could reasonably deny that he deserves a title shot. And I would so love to see him shut that little poser’s mouth. Rashad has already refused the fight once, saying that beating Randy would mean nothing to him. Arrogant little prick! As if anyone will even remember his name in 10 years!
