UFC 109: Paulo Thiago 'very happy' with submission win over Mike Swick
Props: MMA Fighting
Quoteworthy:
"I'm very, very happy with this victory. Mike Swick is a very tough guy and I knew it was going to be a tough fight. Mike Swick has a big career with the UFC so it's normal that people were going to think he would win. But I trained very hard, day and night. People should expect my next fight to be even better performance and continued improvement but yes, [back to work on Monday]."
Brazilian supercop Paulo Thiago continues to defy the odds and muscle his way up the welterweight rankings, once again using a top-ranked fighter from the American Kickboxing Acadamy (AKA) as his springboard. Thiago pushed his record to 13-1at UFC 109 with a "Relentless" attack on Mike Swick, who succumbed to a perfectly executed D'arce choke in the second frame of their main card bout. It's back to work on Monday for the special forces police officer who promises to return to the Octagon even better the next time. That's a scary proposition for the rest of the 170-pound division and may have Josh Koscheck reconsidering that rematch he's been trying to get since falling to the Brazilian at UFC 95 in Thiago's UFC debut. Any fantasy matchmaker's want to take a stab at who his next victim might be?

Gotta eat my words on this one...
Paulo is more than just a fluke KO over KOS; guys gone 2-1 against AKA and that’s just impressive no matter how you slice it. Swick though; man, guy just doesn’t look right, he was awesome against Saunders but he wasn’t aggressive at all against Thiago.

i was gettin so angry at swick for not throwing
there was a point in the fight (i think, i was drinkning the whole time) where he had PT against the fence, and Swick was just feinting left and right, not throwing anything, then backed off and reset in the center. like, dude wtf. and then he gets dropped???? ahhhh i hate you swick!
I’m not really to admit that PT is any kind of good either. 2-1 vs AKA is impressive, but i’ll leave it at that. cant stand this dude, and he doesn’t really do anything either!

Are you serious?
Give me a break man. He’s 3-1 in the UFC against tough guys. Give him some cred. Doesn’t do anything?
WTF?
doesnt do anything as in he doesnt do anything to piss me off
just one of those guys i dont like., and i gave him some cred for going 2-1 vs AKA.
get off my back.

Swick's standup is mad overrated, slapfighting is not the business
but yesterday was pure essence of an MMA finish. Got the solid knockdown used a few shots but he didn’t go insane whaling away with useless and wasted shots/gnp, automatically realizing he had the underhook going for his most solid sub in his arsenal and putting him out. A thing of beauty.
Synyster – gotta agree on the Etim tip, hopefully they’ll give him his jump up fight soon. Am thinking his loss to Tibau did him good in getting time to develop his game on many undercards.

Agree'd NNR..
And now people will start to believe me when I say Swick has one of the top 5 weakest chins in MMA. If you can hit the dude with any half-hearted shot he’s either knocked down/out or his will to fight is gone(Hardy).
Thiago’s stand-up still wasn’t overly impressive, but he has a good chin and good power and now seems to be able to use that black-belt in the cage. He is doing everything right with himself, bulking up (compared to his first UFC appearance) and becoming more well rounded. He keeps this up he could have a long stay in the top 5 WW’s.
Truth about T's standup. He has a weird slapping shot like the diazes but at least he packs quite a shot.
God yesterday was a night of horror for fans of real strikers. Just horrid standup from every single fighter. Only guillard showed some good things mainly a decent jab.

been trying to tell you guyz that Paulo is the next big thing!
Too many people on this site dont factor in, improvements during training camps, gaining experience, and getting more comfortable in a cage…paulo hasnt even scratched the surface yet. This guy is GAME, works hard, is very skilled and will become a monster by the time 2011 rolls around!
Him and Serra should duke it out next!
ur right john
u were talking bout paulo for a while now.

Agreed
Always nice to see someone utilise both striking and BJJ in a finish, no need to go wild with ground and pound looking for the finish when you’re a BJJ black belt and your rocked opponent leaves his neck out. Great performance by Thiago and a beautiful finish.

I actually put a bet on Thiago
easy money if you ask me. Swick is vastly over rated and Thiago being the uncer dog was a gift! The Kos fight was NOT a fluke!! Paulo is a tough guy with a great skill set and a great camp and I really rate him.

Paulo is for real
glad I picked him to beat Mike. Swick seems to do more talking than winning lately, his days may be numbered!!!!!
There is GSP then Fitch and Alves
After that the talent slightly drops and about five fighters competing for the 4th spot and Paulo looks to be in the lead. There isn’t a real weakness in Paulo’s game besides he will be undersized against the bigger WW. Swick is a great aggressive striker I just couldn’t see him KO Paulo and thats why I took Paulo in McArthurs pool. It will be interesting to see how Swick bounces back he is still a good fighter but he needs to be more patient I think he was going for the early KO and that was a huge mistake agaisnt Paulo.

betting last night
Did anybody else make some cash last night? I had the Mexicutioner at +700 against Gracie so I hammered that for a nice payout! How was rolles at -1000? He’s done nothing in his MMA career

His name, nothing more. And the oddsmakers have confused that Mexicutioner with our Mexicutioner.
The weather is here, I wish you were beautiful
Can't believe Joey stole Mexi's nickname
Almost as surprising as how terrible Rolles was, I picked him because I thought that he’d be given a can and would be a lock but man he looked horrendous, he even let Mexi get out of mount.

Nice, i knew one of you guys would at least come through on that.
I was too much of a coward even though i knew that Beltran would tool him bad if he could sprawl and brawl. I backed out simply because it was short notice. Another never again for me. Beltran was a worse matchup for him than Al turk.

Never picking that guy again

again?
why did you pick him here. Don’t you remember his fight with the People’s Champ?

War The Rock, I knew that he was on ESPN for some reason that 100lb weight cut must have been a struggle though
Seriously the Swick-Burkman fight was poor, couldn’t ignore the People’s Champ comment though. The People’s Warrior is no People’s Champion, The Rock >>> Josh Burkman even if he did shag Arianny.

Thought he flukes that ko against Kos but then he bilked up and looks right for the division now. Another great win, gotta give him props.

“he doesn’t really do anything either!”……………WTF?
He knocked out Kos and put Swick to sleep!!!!!
he doesn’t do anything with the media to make me mad. i just dont like the guy. he could win his next 4 or 5 or 10 and i stilll woulndt like him. get off it.

no title shots
I don’t understand how these aka guys can even think of a title shot. They all just fought the same guy and only one of them won. They won’t fight each other but by doing that they aren’t deserving of another shot at GSP. Fitch and Koscheck both had shots at GSP. And since then they have fought second tier welterweights expecting people to be impressed. Fitch would have to utterly destroy Alves to get another title shot in my opinion. Fitch and Kos are good but when you are 2 of the top 5, have already lost to the champ, and won’t fight each other, that just doesn’t equal title shot!
Agreed
I don’t ever see Fitch destroying Alves. He’s a totally improved fighter than the one Fitch faced in their first fight. I see Alves knocking him out or at least getting the win especially after seeing the trouble Fitch had against Pierce.
Then we can watch KOS try to stand with Daley and get knocked out and get rid of the AKA vs AKA talk!
Swick is overrated
I’ve never been really impressed with him. I’d say the trio from AKA are all over achievers as they achieve more than their raw talent level. Swick & Fitch just don’t have the killer instinct, they are good fighters and all but they aren’t instinctive fighters which is something you cannot learn.
I don't know kibbles
I think too aggressive this fight coming out swing the way he did against any decent fighter is a bad idea he must of thought he could run over Paulo but the problem is Paulo has great striking defence and a decent power shot himself. Paulo is solid everywere he might not be the best at any phase he’s just good at them all one of the best all around fighters in the WW division. Remember his only loss in the UFC is against Fitch who is either the #2 or #3 WW on almost everybody’s ranking boards. Swick is a top ten in the UFC no doubt he is just a step below Hardy.

Never been sold on Swick...
If his fights go longer than 30 seconds he loses. It’s almost like once he realizes his opponent isn’t going to give him an opening he freaks out and just quits fighting. I also don’t like Swick’s pre-fight b/s interview “I’m going to come right at him.” Yeah, going to come right at him and stand there.
Making a run
Paulo is looking pretty legit. I’d like to see him fight Semtex, Conduit or Kampmann next.

i like paulo..
i think that he is a serious guy..maybe not the top right now..but you have to respect the fact that he has a legit job above and beyond being a fighter ..a job he uses these skills in..and he is not just flapping his mouth off about how great he is..just going in there and kicking ass…man he had swick asleep in record time.
PT looks pretty good
He can strike and has submissions. Wouldn’t mind seeing him fight Fitch again. I think he might beat him this time. He’s definitely an up and comer….
