UFC 109 bonuses and awards for 'Relentless' PPV fights

UFC 109: "Relentless" from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, has officially wrapped, which means that it’s time for those select fighters who went above and beyond in their respective fights to get a little extra grease for their efforts.

To the tune of $60,000 each.

The promotion dished out its standard post-fight monetary bonuses to four out of the 22 fighters on the card. And it may not surprise you which combatants are leaving "Sin City" with a little extra green.

In addition to their base salaries, the UFC awarded middleweight competitors Chael Sonnen and Nate Marquardt "Fight of the Night" for their thrilling three rounds of action.

Unfortunately Sonnen spoiled a "Great" opportunity for Marquardt to get back into the number one contender spot with a dominating performance that saw him survive both a deep laceration and last minute submission scare.

Is he destined to meet the winner of Anderson Silva vs. Vitor Belfort later this year?

Representing the 170-pound weight class was AKA nemesis Paulo Thiago. The Brazilian supercop made "Quick" work of Mike Swick's title aspirations with his slick "Submission of the Night" that came via D'arce choke in the second round.

Also bringing home the proverbial bacon was former UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra. "The Terror" made his return to the Octagon a memorable one, turning Frank Trigg inside-out to grab "Knockout of the Night" after putting "Twinkle Toes'" on his butt in the first round.

Here are the special fight bonuses for UFC 109:

Star-divide

Fight of the Night — Chael Sonnen vs. Nate Marquardt
Submission of the Night — Paulo Thiago
Knockout of the Night — Matt Serra

Again, each fighter received $60,000 extra for their performances in addition to their respective base salaries, which we will pass along as soon as possible.

Marquardt MUST Get the Loser of Anderson v Vitor

I am hoping that Marquardt gets the loser out of Silva v Belfort . . . he has earnt the right to not fall far from the top contender position. Nate has been so consistent for so long. Congrats to a much improved Sonnen, but Marquardt would take it if they fought again! Got totally caught off guard. Great (and frustrating) Fight!

Did you really get you Pen license?

I hope you are not being serious when u spell . . . And clearly you are smoking too much when you make comments like ‘nate is a worst version of bisping’ . . . why am I am even responding to you . . .

Was the most exciting by far for me.

by Kanadian on Feb 7, 2010 4:07 AM EST up reply actions

whack fights.

I agree, it wasn’t the fight of the night. Nate just got outwrestled for 15 mins, Sonnen was probably always gonna win that fight based on his wrestling we just didn’t know it as Marquardt hasn’t been fighting any strong wrestlers in the UFC. Maia vs Miller was probably the worst, both guys just empty in their eyes, no nothing and an absolutely horrible display of fighting technique, pleease don’t put more fights like that on main cards and never allow country music again.

next UFC is gonna be 10x better than this one, with younger and more relevant matchups.

fresh like uhh.

swick got exposed as the chinny wannabee that i thought he was. it’s ok having fast hands but you cant build muscles on your chin. a good striker would’ve tagged thiago as he backed away with his chin in the air time and time again.

it's all about don frye

I think most (especially myself)

after 40 fights, being in Greg Jackson’s camp and having a black belt in bjj(12 years of bjj) that he would be so absolutely novice off of his back! It made me sick to watch someone with 12 years of bjj look like a turtle on his back!

by Da Monkey on Feb 7, 2010 8:53 AM EST up reply actions

I was thinking the same thing. He looked almost as hopeless on the ground as Stann.

Actually nate's aggressivness fooled us about his longstanding weakness that date back to ...

his pancrase days. If you stall him out, then he just sits there and doesn’t do anything. That’s why he has losses to guys like Takeuchi and Yamamiya, guys so below his level it’s not even funny. Here You saw everytime he went for it, he was having success. Gotta agree with Da Monkey over here.

by NNR (formerly NameNotRequired) on Feb 7, 2010 10:58 AM EST up reply actions

I always wondered how he got those loses...

It makes perfect sense after seeing that last night. Isn’t Okami a gnp guy also? I wonder how he would do against him. Ahh I am still so disappointed about that fight! I had such high hopes for Nate, =)

by Da Monkey on Feb 7, 2010 11:01 AM EST up reply actions

Yea i think Okami would do the same to him.

Nate was giving up TDs to fn thales. Okami would pin him and ride him for 3rds, but probly with less damage than yesterday. On the standup, he would probly get the better of the exchanges but Okami is somewhat underrated there. Funnily enough though – Sonnen stands less of a chance than Nate to beat Andy. Style baby styles. Sonnen’s game lacks a sub grappling component so giving anderson 25 minutes to work sweeps and subs which he actively seeks from the bottom is asking for trouble. We saw that Chael gave up dumb subs yesterday but got out because of grit. Standign i won’;t even bother- the difference is as big as in their wrestling. Speaking of which – mad technical and diverse wrestling from chael yesterday. When got takend down but wall walked and hit a knee tp in seconds, sick business. (He’s still a douchebag though,) Let’s hope for Nate vs Vitor which i think he wins.

Great break down...

I gotta say NNR you have some of the most technical breakdowns on mania. I love listening to what you gotta say. I think of myself as pretty educated as far mma goes, sometimes my personal feelings blind me, but you always put things in great perspective. I take it you fight/training for a while? If so what state are you in? Just curious more then anything. I started classes here in sarasota florida (tampa suburb) with my son. I wrestled in high school and wasted my time in many years of karate, lol. Not really wasted, I love the stand up aspects of it and Machida has made it relevant in mma, just not everyone has the ability to carry it over the same way….

by Da Monkey on Feb 7, 2010 11:25 AM EST up reply actions

Thanks, i am just a big fight nerd....

I watch anything and everything where two people are locked in battle men or women. From amatuer wrestling to grapplnig, boxing, mma, kickboxing, muay thai, shootboxing, judo,….. Use to be the bloodthirsty fan until it got old and i started to notice the small fighting details then it just took over me. As far myself i live in minnesota. i do some bjj and competed a couple of times in small tourneys but I do it for the workout/stress relief more than anything. And i only recently started though i’d been a bjj fan for a few years.

I wonder if Hendo would have handled him the same way?

Hendo likes to slugg it out and is not to big on the gnp yet he can manhandle most fighters. I was thinking Nate better to for SF to get a belt, but Jake Shields may do the same exact thing to him there as well. I am so dumfounded by his lack of overall groundgame off his back. I am still in absolute shock at that showing yesterday. I am not taking away anything from Chael, but outside of spinning for the leg and the one attempt at a kimura he never tried to isolate an arm, never let his legs ride high for any kind of triangle attempt or at least threaten! I know Chael is great at gnp, but you have to threaten at least and make him second guess about his postureo or anything else…

Awesome night of fights!

Joke main event COLEMAN IS A JOKE HE SHOULDNT BE FIGHTING . no movement speed reflexes awarness etc a danger waiting to happen... His coach Tomkpins is clueless! go back and watch his advice.

I fell asleep but ive just watched the Sonnen Randy Serra fights. I need to see Maia and Swicks now. WOW! I said Sonnen had a plan but he fought amazing he is so tough and mentally strong. There is lots of great fights in the middle weight can be made also depending on Wandys fight to – Bisping Wandy Siva Belfort Maia Sonnen Marquadt are just a few of them and isnt GSP moving up?. Serra was best bet but Trigg started well it looked like he could of won a decision with them tactics and then Boom! UFC110 i cant wait for it!

WANDY RIP Bispings going to toy with you then destroy you

by Tonyuk on Feb 7, 2010 4:49 AM EST reply actions

I agree.

but no coach is gonna help an old man who’s not even able to move, the main event could not be taken seriously. Serra, Thiago were good, Marquardt fight was frustrating to watch because he simply had no answer for the takedowns and was humiliated.

Matteo Serra is the mayn! Forza Italia.

If Anderson says put on hip-hop and Chael say put on country, it’s going to be a hoe-down.

Wow he looks far worse then Nate does...

And he owned the fight. That is so crazy. It makes you wonder how much power he actually has on gnp. Does he not have any power? How can he beat on someone for 15 minutes and look so much worse with just a few shots? He must have powder puffs for mitts…

I don’t get his comments at all..It is going to be a hoe down! I think Anderson is going to time him on the way in and lay him out, imo.

....

Sonnen is one of my favorite fighters now for sure. Watch that interview through the link. He talks shit on Diego Sanchez and a bunch of other fighters lol.

agreed...

at first i though he was just a whiny bastard but this dude is funny as hell, especially the hip-hop/country bit lol

by scott1 on Feb 7, 2010 8:34 AM EST up reply actions

Marquartd was clearly the more technical fighter and it was a bit like GSP vs BJ Penn II when the better striker was smothered tom and time again. I though Nate had him in the end. A shame for him as I can see Sonnen being submitted by Anderson Silva in a 5 round fight even from the bottom

by Apocacryptic on Feb 7, 2010 7:05 AM EST reply actions

might b the better striker but its not a kickboxing bout.

by ruanfiy on Feb 7, 2010 9:53 AM EST up reply actions

MARQUARDT?

WTF?

That was the only fight i was 100% sure i picked the right guy, damnit…..

Oh and Coleman, Miller and Swick are pathetic.

And so is Couture….. if he fights a real young fighter he’ll die.

As a huge Nate fan

I was immensely dissappointed, but also impressed. Unfortunately I think Sonnen poses Silvas biggest threat, although I do think SIlva would tap him out if he was in that guard.

by theworldismine on Feb 7, 2010 12:04 PM EST reply actions

No, Homeboy above is right!

I though Thiago deserved it more too, but last night after the last fight, they showed the “Sub of the Night Clip” and it was Randy. It wasn’t just Joe’s mouth, they actually went back to a replay of it.

by JasonFahQ on Feb 7, 2010 12:28 PM EST reply actions

It was not fight of the night

but it could have beatdown of the night for sure!!! Nate got owned from start to finish!!

by HEELHOOK on Feb 7, 2010 12:39 PM EST reply actions

The fights wer Gud besides the Maia & stann fight

Those fights wer terrible! Barley ultimate fight night worthy! I missed twinkletoes getting ko’d but I seen the clips at the end. Did trigg really protest that shit?
