Chael Sonnen vs Nate Marquardt UFC 109 fight to determine next middleweight title contender

Even though the returning Vitor Belfort may have cut the line of hungry middleweight contenders, UFC President Dana White confirmed at the Feb. 4 pre-fight progress conference that the upcoming 185-pound scrap between Chael Sonnen and Nate Marquardt at UFC 109 will indeed determine the number one contender for the division title.
That is, the winner of Anderson Silva vs. Vitor Belfort at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi.
Marquardt (29-8-2) made a strong case for a rematch with "The Spider" with a "Great" knockout over undefeated submission wizard Demian Maia at UFC 102 for his third straight win.
Silva spokesman and manager Ed Soares suggested the unofficial match-up of Marquardt vs. Dan Henderson following UFC 102 in order determine a number one contender for the division title while Silva took a break from competition to heal an ailing elbow.
Sounded good on paper -- except they probably didn't realize "Hollywood" was no longer under contract after air-mailing Michael Bisping across the pond at UFC 100.
Life goes on -- and so too must the quest for middleweight gold. With Hendo in Strikeforce, "The Phenom" managed to leapfrog the competition for a crack at the crown, so Marquardt will be forced to quell the uprising from the suddenly relevant Chael Sonnen.
Despite a boatload of trash talk, Sonnen (23-10-1) has a history of beating middleweight champs from Brazil. At WEC 36, Sonnen outpointed a bloated and barley sane Paulo Filho back in 2008 in his last appearance for the Zuffa sister promotion.
He was quicly written off following a quick tapout to grappling ace Demian Maia at UFC 95, but stormed back into relevancy with dominating decision wins over venerable middleweight threats Dan Miller and Yushin Okami.
Can he continue his unlikely rise to the top with a win over Marquardt?
UFC 109: "Relentless" will also feature a light heavyweight battle between elder statesmen Randy "The Natural" Couture and Mark "The Hammer" Coleman in the main event of the evening.

I doubt Chael will get a shot if he wins...but I could see him fighting winner of Bisping/Wand for the next shot while Silva fights again at 205...

I don't think he gets past Nate,
but if by some miracle he does, it would be hard to deny him a title shot. He would have 2 victories over top 5 opponents in Nate and Okami, a win over a top 15 in Miller, and a quality loss to a top 5 in Maia.
Luckily, we don’t have to worry about that, as Nate should take care of business. Although, after hearing Chael for the past couple of weeks, I think it will be a little closer than most think. Nate with and eventual TKO in 2 or 3.

Tough to tell..
I kind of agree it will be a tougher fight than most think; but Chael’s inconsistent in his performances. Sometimes he’s great, sometimes he’s flat. Listening to him on that pro mma radio episode though; it makes you wonder if he can’t pull it off. Guy talks a lot of shit but has a good objective outlook on his own skills and his opponents. Still taking Nate FTW though.

If Chael wins...
he should have to re-match Maia before getting a shot at the title. Should Nate win (which I hope he does) he should get the next shot.

If chael wins (don’t think he does), I’d walk if I was Nate. Got fucked 2x anyways. Once by losing title shot that was promised (after a performance that he couldn’t have done better in), and twice by having another fight rather then just face winner of Andy/Vitor (regardless of whether he ‘just wants to stay actice’ or not)
I’d give Dana the big fuck you and go try to take the belt from Hendo in a huge ratings draw for STRIKEFORCE, and a big wake up call for the UFC brass.

I hate the fact that Nate
has to fight this guy to get a shot, he shouldve just got it after KOing Damian. Sonnen has never been mentioned or been a factor in this conversation before so why should the Great need to fight this guy to prove anything. This fight should be entertaining but if Im Nate Im not to happy about this, he is going to hurt Sonnen who deserves a beatdown for the way he has been running his mouth lately!!!!!

He wont have any problems at all with Sonnen and will get a shot after that.
Although you never know with the UFC… theyve promised him one before.

He’s gonna win by decision…. Chael is the more “in you face, keep swinging” type of fighter… unless Nate can pull a submission on Chael, Nate is destined to lose by decision

I don’t like this guy Sonnen as much as everyone here, but my gut feeling says he is going to pull one of those boring decisions. As long as Nate doesn’t come in overconfident and make any mistakes he should take it easy, but this is MMA and you never know……
you can say "you never know" about any fight
but Nate is on a different level. Sonnen can’t keep up with Nate’s pace.
